OK ...first thing first ...I am not real "computer savoy" ...know enough to be dangerous! That said:
Taichi 21-5 running windows 8 .
? about the WiDi :
I have a couple Netgear push 2tv 1000 units.
(I know...they are "old" ...but not much out there these days with component outputs....One in the garage, and one in the basement hooked up to older TV's with no HDMI inputs!)
The WiDi utility "finds" these devices, (even knows their "names" as shown on tv screen) ...but will not connect.
I keep getting sent to a screen that says: Unsupported device "This devise is not compatible with WiDi on windows 8."
Any of you experts that can tell me (in simple terms, Please) how / what I need to do to get these working?
Thanks, Dave

Just got a (used) 21 and first did a factory reset and then update - it has severe wifi connectivity issues (W8 and 8.1) and needs literally to be on top of the router (other gear works fine) to see a signal and then its patchy. Is there a fix for this? I can't find one on the www and stumbled across this thread. Thanks
-
Can you advise exactly how you sorted this out with the ISP and what is was you/they had to do.

Would like to let everyone know that I have installed Windows 8.1 on the Taichi21 with all the latest drivers/Bios updates from the Asus website and everything works perfect except the dual mode, the tablet side window stays black that it. All other modes work perfectly and their are no connectivity issues at all. So I am not sure why everybody is having all the issues that are mentioned previously. All I can say is just make sure that you have installed all the latest drivers/Bios updates for the Taichi21 on the Asus website that are listed under Windows 8 and make sure that you have all the current updates from Microsoft and everything is working fine except for the window on the tablet side in dual mode stays black, that it. As for that issue with the window being black in dual-mode on the tablet side only is not really any big deal as I personally have no use for that mode any way everything else works perfectly.
1. Update to the latest Bios
2. Update all Drivers to the latest versions
3 Get all the latest updates from Microsoft
4. install Windows 8.1
This is what I have done and the only issue that I was left with was in dual-mode on the tablet side only no windows open up, that it, no other issues. -
I had to manually specify the DNS settings. The isp recognised there was a problem with a specific Technicolour modem and published a fix.
I guess it is supposed to be temporary but it seemed to work. -

I found that everything worked well for several hours & maybe 24 close/open lid sequences.
Then the old problems reappeared and I had to reboot. Eg. when I open the ultrabook, the screen did not auto-flip - I had to use the Taichi button to activate the non-touch ultrabook screen.
So I found that close lid/rotation functionality works under 8.1 for awhile, but is not stable - after awhile the close lid/rotation functions cease to work and the Taichi must be rebooted.
Please update us on your continuing experience.
Thanks,
Frank
ON EDIT: I decided to give 8.1 another try - to be sure I even updated my bios to the latest 208. Then uninstalled and reinstalled closelid,ATK & VAG in the recommended order.
Once again, worked fine for awhile, then I had to use the Taichi button to switch between screens.
Back to 8.0 again. -

So my current list of grievances with my Taichi21 (i7, 256GB) that perhaps anyone can suggest solutions to or compare their own issues:
-keyboard is no longer backlit and I can't find a way to adjust, reset, etc aside from the keystrokes which don't work
-anyone know how to turn off the windows 8 button on the touchscreen? Its such a pain in the when resting your palm in the vicinity to handwrite notes (the majority of what I do)
-since updating to 8.1, the screens no longer flip automatically back and forth between screens when opening and closing the lid
-anyone else have adobe reader x just quit working after the update to 8.1?
For those with the WiFi issue, I wish I knew how to help; mine used to do the same in a specific coffee shop but eventually it just started working correctly and now my WiFi is ok. -
JeffersonCampervan Notebook Enthusiast
Well, here's the latest non-answer from ASUS re. the 8.1 screen flip/rotation problems:
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Lily and it is my pleasure to help you with your problem.
After installing the Close Lid, ATK & VGA, other users no long have this problem, so I think the laptop itself was the issue, please send it in for the further check, our engineer will diagnose your laptop in detail and then fix this problem.
Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding!
Please submit the RMA(Return Material Authorization) request on the following website, then the RMA department will follow up the case for you.
To which I replied:
Lily:
1) OK, I have requested a RMA, BUT:
A) MANY OTHERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!! Go on the forums and see for yourself. Many of them have filed with ASUS support – there must be some way you can search those case numbers. This statement you made is simply not true: “After installing the Close Lid, ATK & VGA, other users no long have this problem”.
B) I don’t believe it is hardware – otherwise I’d have the same issues in 8.0, which is not the case.
C) To be sure that it is not due to something I installed, here is what I have done :
Updated BIOS to 208
Returned Taichi to factory default state Win 8.0
Performed all updates – ASUS Live Update & Windows (all automatic)
Then installed 8.1 from the Windows Store
Then uninstalled & reinstalled Close Lid, ATK & VGA as per your instructions
Now I have a computer with nothing on it other than Windows & ASUS default software - - and with the versions of Close Lid,ATK & VGA recommended by you.
Still the same result with 8.1 – initially the close lid screen transfer & rotation work fine, but after 30 – 120 minutes, they cease to work.
Thanks, -
Hello everyone, I have a TAICHI21 i7 256GB and maybe can help some of you since I managed to have my Taichi somehow stable with Windows 8.1.
2) I don't think it is possible.
3) Windows update automatically pushed the latest driver for your graphics adapter, and that is not compatible with the Taichi functionallity. You should download the only compatible version of the driver in ASUS support page.
4) Which version, the app or the desktop? I use the desktop version and it's working fine.
My current ASUS software versions, working fine under Windows 8.1, are:
- Close Lid 1.1.8
- Taichi Home 1.0.30
- ASUS Display Calibration 1.0.5
- ASUS InstantOn 3.0.6
- ASUS Live Update 3.2.6
- ASUS LifeFrame 3.1.13
- ASUS Power4Gear 2.1.7
- ASUS ScreenShare 1.0.26
- ASUS Smart Gesture 2.2.4
- ASUS Taichi Display Control 1.0.13
- ATK Package 1.0.0028
I also noticed that even when I installed the recommended VGA driver from ASUS, Windows automatically updated it to a newer version (2963). I think that version was causing the CloseLid to crash. So to force it to stay in the previous version you have to disable automatic driver updates in Windows and reinstall the VGA driver provided from ASUS.
To disable automatic driver updates go to Control Panel, Devices and Printers and right click your device name and choose Configure Device Instalation, there you should have an option to disable automatic updates and to let you manually install drivers for your device. The names may be diferrent because I use Windows in a different language.
I also have a question for the forum, how does your unit performs with games? When I had Windows 8 I updated to the Intel OEM driver and was able to run games as a HD 4000 should, but with the ASUS driver it can't even play games like torchlight or FIFA without lagging. Of course with the latest driver the second display didn't work so I had to revert to the original.
Thanks and sorry for the long post -
JeffersonCampervan Notebook Enthusiast
1) I too have ATK 1.0.0.0028 installed rather than ATK 1.0.0.0030 .
2) I have also disabled the auto update for Intel to ensure that the VGA driver did not update.
I don't see anything in your setup that is different from mine. The relevant files, according to ASUS, though are just Close Lid, ATK & VGA.
I guess I'll see what the RMA reveals, but I do not have my hopes up. -
Thank you so much for your help and analysis on our issues, I greatly appreciate your time and effort! I am currently working through your driver list to match mine and will update when I finish. Unfortunately my backlit keyboard issue happens all the time, and no amount of FN+A or f3 and f4 will fix it, nor a bios restore.
In terms of games, I have played dota2 on mine, which can make older computers hiccup. Interestingly enough, for a while it was fine and managed decent fps, but one day after playing quite a while it started lagging/freezing. After that I quit playing dota on it, but recently started again since I reformatted it gives decent fps. I think at one time I also played spec ops: the line and it was a manageable fps. My graphics driver version is 9.17.10.2963.
I forgot to mention my greatest issue with the touchscreen which is actually causes my blood pressure to rise and I was wondering if you all have something similar. Keep in mind, I use the stylus in conjunction with Microsoft OneNote and when working properly produces fantastic handwritten notes. This unfortunately is now intermittent because occasionally (some days lots, some days not at all) the screen will randomly register the stylus at full pressure, or even pressure when the stylus is ~1 cm above the screen. I have found that by removing the back cap of the stylus and replacing it can reset the stylus back to functional, but only for 1-5 minutes before it once again randomly changes its pressure settings. This is also paired with the screen just sometimes not recognizing the stylus, which a stylus "reset" also temporarily fixes. After purchasing another stylus, the screen only recognizes that one as full pressure permanently. Restoring BIOS as suggested by ASUS staff doesn't do the trick, nor did a full reformat of Windows. Please let me know if anyone knows whats up, or any suggestions on how to fix this. -
Hello everybody.
I'm new to this forum, but it has been to great help to me so far.
I have upgraded my Taichi laptop to Windows 8.1 without any noticeable problems, except for one thing.
The volume button on the side of the computer only works to lower the volume. When trying to raise the volume, nothing happens, no matter if I am in laptop or in tablet mode.
I wrote to Asus support and they answered that I should reset my laptop to factory settings. Well, yes, I could try that, but before I do that I just wanted to see if anybody else here has had the same problem. Could it be a driver related problem, or a hardware problem?
I did not use the laptop a lot before upgrading the Windows version, but I do remember the volume button working complete at least once. That was in tablet mode.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the great site! -

New OS support usually means a newer BIOS. -
So this might mean I have to do the full restore? Argh... -

Hi everyone, new here.
I have a TAICHI 31 and have had for about 6 months. Anyway while I was checking a game to see if it was working properly before I leave overseas tomorrow on holiday the laptop just turned off INSTANTLY. I mean like all power was lost. It was on full charge and everything and not even a BSOD occurred. I tried to restart it after this and I only have the 'ON' light next to the slide switch and the caps lock light. I can hear the fan if I move my ear next to it. No display, no 'ASUS' logo on the lid either. I've tried connecting it to an external screen and nothing. I'm really considering moving to the VAIO Fit Flip PC because of all the niggles I have encountered like some random BSODs if I open OneNote however I hadn't had this happen to me for a while now.
Also I was still on normal windows 8 because I saw all the issues people were having with 8.1 who had a TAICHI (e.g. the second screen not working in tablet mode etc).
I'm guessing it is RMA time when I come back from overseas? Any suggestions? -
Hey guys. Faced a somewhat new problem on my Taichi 21 (windows 8) today. After using it in tablet mode for a while, when i opened the lid, the display shifted to notebook mode as expected, But, there was no presence of mouse pointer. Trackpad didn't work, however, the smart gesture system tray icon was visible. A restart fixed the issue, but exactly the same thing happened a few hours later. It feels as of the screen part knows its laptop mode, but the trackpad part still thinks its tablet mode. Although a restart fixes the issue, its still bugging ...

Hi Guys and Gals
Not to sound like a complete knot head, but I need a little help here.
I have the Taichi 21 and it was working just fine until I set up the wifi and all the up dates happened. argggg
I have tried the system recovery to remove everything and start over. so it goes through the preparation and says. "some files are missing. Your windows installation or recovery media will provide these files".
from there the only thing left is to cancel. How do I put back to factory settings. I dont have a disk. or any other media to do this with.
I have also read every post in this thread and have put back the HD graphics driver to the 9.17.10.2857 but it didnt seem to do a thing.
Also where do I find all of this on my computer?
- Close Lid 1.1.8
- Taichi Home 1.0.30
- ASUS Display Calibration 1.0.5
- ASUS InstantOn 3.0.6
- ASUS Live Update 3.2.6
- ASUS LifeFrame 3.1.13
- ASUS Power4Gear 2.1.7
- ASUS ScreenShare 1.0.26
- ASUS Smart Gesture 2.2.4
- ASUS Taichi Display Control 1.0.13
- ATK Package 1.0.0028
I must not be looking in the right spot. I have found where to download all of it and I want to compare what I have to this list.
EDIT or do I just dowload and install these (see above) and viola!!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time in advance -
Sorry cant help with games I will only be using the Taichi for work If I can get it to work again.
Thank you for your time -
Ok boys and girls
I followed the post below and installed all the programs as stated and viola everything seems to be working. Thanks to all of you for the info SCadete high five to you. -
I am starting to wonder if it is a physical problem. Sometimes, if I push the button very hard, the volume goes up.
The volume down button ALWAYS works without a problem.
Do you guys think a full restore would fix this problem (like Asus suggests)? -
sounds like a bad button on the rig it self. Just guessing here
-
after a few days of operating the machine all seems to be working well except for the fact that the screen rotation quits after a while and you have to power off and back on again to get it working.
Just follow SCadete's advice and should be fine for the time being. -
JeffersonCampervan Notebook Enthusiast
I've done everything SCadete specifies and more - and I still get loss of close lid/rotation functionality after a varying period of time after a reboot - sometimes right away, sometimes 24 hours.
But IMO even just losing screen rotation means that all is NOT "working well".
For those of you who have claimed that the problem is solved - are you regularly switching between tablet and ultrabook and if so - does it consistently switch screens automatically & never lose rotation?
If that's the case, can you look at this file and post the version?:
c:\esupport\edriver\I386\Model.ini
The info will come up as text like this:
"[Model]
Model=TAICHI21, TAICHI21A
ReleaseVersion=50
SCDVersion=5.00 "
ASUS tech support says it should be 10, not 5, but then doesn't give any way to update it. -
Hey fellow TAICHI owners,
I've been encountering an issue recently with the ASUS TAICHI 21 (Core i7 model), specifically the battery. I noticed on the bottom-right icon tray, when I highlight the mouse over the power icon, it states "0% available, plugged in, charging". However, the laptop was in sleep mode (closed lid) the entire night and always plugged in. Furthermore, if I try to remove the power cable from the laptop, it will shut down right away (implying there is 0% charge).
Also, when I press the blue Taichi button on the keyboard, I noticed in the battery section it states "STANDBY - No Battery". So my initial impression is that somewhere inside the laptop the battery was disconnected or became messed up??
I'm not familiar with opening up the laptop to check things, so want to know if other users are aware of such an issue? And does anyone know if this is related to the battery or some other hardware component that's not working properly anymore? Or is it even software related?
Thanks. -
rotation problems do happen to me. But I guess I know what's the problem in my case. Ocasionally when put to sleep, the close lid software crashes (It appears as a window without content, only borders, a small square in the screen). Whenever that happens I have to restart the notebook for the service to work again.

It may be a hardware failure as you suggested, but what if TAICHIs have one of those keyboard shortcuts that disable battery charging? I don't want to give false hopes but it may be worth to to investigate this.
Happy new year everyone -
Touch not working.
I can switch from laptop screen to tablet screen but tablet won't respond to my touch, at all.
Any suggestions? -
Hi all,
I've come across a problem with my Taichi. I'm running Windows 8.0. All the Windows and driver updates are installed.
[Model]
Model=TAICHI21, TAICHI21A
ReleaseVersion=50
SCDVersion=5.00
Seamless switch does not work. When I close the lid, nothing happens. With the lid close, I flick the seamless switch off and on and the outer screen displays an image for a second, then goes blank. When I use the Asus home button to set the computer in tablet mode, it switches to the outer screen oriented so that the windows logo/button is at the bottom of the screen, but then rotates so that Windows logo/button is at the top. It refuses to rotate after this. It's like the computer thinks the lid is still open, not in tablet mode, by keeping the screen rotated with the windows log on top. Furthermore, when I set the computer to go to sleep when the lid is closed, it does not work. When I close the lid, I can look in through the side and see that the screen is still on and the computer is not asleep.
This all leads me to believe that the switch that tells the computer that the lid is closed is broken. I cannot figure out if there is a driver that controls this or not. All searches I do about lid closing problems come up with the Windows 8.1 problem, which is not what I have. Any suggestions? Thanks! -
Regards,
Saulo. -
I have the exact same problem as xanthamn posted above, with the Taichi refusing to enter sleep mode no matter what I try, it also never rotates anymore.
I thought my problem was an isolated one, and believed the actual switch that tells the computer that the lid is closed was broken, but since you have the exact same problem as I do, maybe it is actually yet another driver problem.
I'm also running Windows 8.0 and have all the driver updated to the proper version ones as recommended by SCadete (Saulo grande abraco amigo do Brasil )
[Model]
Model=TAICHI21, TAICHI21A
ReleaseVersion=50
SCDVersion=5.00
When I first got the laptop everything was working as it should, and the only thing I did before the laptop refusing to enter sleep, was to update all the driver for Windows 8 from Asus page, and then the problem started.
I've tried everything, from installing all the latest drivers, installing all the versions recommended by Saulo, when all failed I decided to updated to Windows 8.1 to see if it would fix it, but it never did, then I finally decided to simple restore the computer using the Asus factory restore, and to my surprise even that didn't fix it, closing lid to enter sleep mode never worked again.
I've tried all the Intel graphics driver from the stock one recommended by Asus to the latest one for Windows 8.1, but cannot get it to work.
I don't know what else do to aside from sending it back for repair. -
Looks like there is a beta version of the CloseLid v1.1.9 with a date of 01.02.2014, so far this seems to be working on my updated 8.1 Taichi. The file was provided when I contacted ASUS tech support.
-
-
Not sure if it's 8.1 or something else, but upon restarting, the cursor would appear in the PIN window as normall, but it disappears soon as I input, had to click on the box again to input. -
-
-
Haven't had any problems after updating to closelid 1.1.9
-
I am having a problem when connecting my Asus Taichi 21 to a large wall mounted monitor via a HDMI cable. The only way it will work is in tablet mode. If I open it up as a laptop I don't have the ability to move the cursor.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Tom -
Really confused about this so hopefully someone can advise...
Does anyone who owns a taichi have one with a dual touch screen? Lisa Gade mentioned Asus were going to bring out a double touch version in her taichi review and then I spotted this model:
CW009H
ASUS TAICHI, TAICHI21-CW009H, ASUS Taichi TAICHI21-CW009H
Clearly states "11.6" Full HD Dual Sided Touch Screen". They also have another model (CW011H) which is a lot cheaper but the exact same specs so I'm assuming this is because it's the version with only the tablet touch...
The problem is I cannot find ANY reviews, youtube videos etc where this double touch version is discussed and believe me I've looked EVERYWHERE! So, does it exist, can anyone vouch for it? I've seen that specific model cheaper on some other sites (£999) and for that price if it is the dual sided touch version then it seems quite a good price...
Help!!! Thanks guys...jwdink likes this. -
Hi guys, managed to get a solid few months out of the laptop since my last post.
Now the latest thing - every time I boot up the laptop, the cursor goes mental. Doesn't matter if lid is open or closed. It launches applications repeatedly and rearranges tiles for a few seconds.
Any way of stopping this?
Thanks! -
Hi folks,
Planning on buying one of these. Sounds like that beta closelid driver above makes Windows 8.1 use-able? -
It has a great hardware, but the drivers made by ASUS can't manage it correctly. Some drivers, like the VGA driver, isn't updated since the launch. I don't think they still have the same team for driver development. If it wasn't for that beta closeLid I would say they didn't have a team for Taichi development at all. I think they hired new developers or kept only part of the team for bug fixing, but they're not trying to improve or update.
If I were you I'd buy another convertible that made you depend less of the brand. One that you could download all the default drivers and have delivered the hardware you paid for. For example, I noticed that that my TAICHI I7 with HD4000 couldn't render 3d graphics as fast as my other notebook, a I5 with HD3000. Since my other notebook had the default Intel drivers I decided to test the Taichi with the latest Intel drivers and there it was, the I7 I paid for. Of course I had to revert for the old ASUS driver from 2012 to have the dual screen support
The proof of the lack of support is this thread. See how many problems were solved by the owners exchanging information without official ASUS updates. Unless you want to pay to be a tester of this concept convertible,
stay away from TAICHI
PS: I'm a computer engineer and bought the TAICHI to user it for research and development in the field image processing and computer vision. -
Hey SCadete, thanks for the reply.
I want a computer with pen support, and I've realized that a big usable touchpad is crucial to my workflow (90% of my work is in my lap, on a train, in bed, or on a couch).
Let's overview my options:
Vaio Flip
Even worse firmware issues/support
Poor build quality
Expensive for similar specs
Dell Venue Pro, Surface pro 2, Samsung Ativ 900T, Dell XPS 11, Vaio Duo, Vaio Tap
Cramped touchpad
Lousy Keyboard
Thinkpad Helix
Crappy touchpad
Unreliable touch screen
Thinkpad yoga
Crappy touchpad
expensive
Fujitsu t732/t901
Tiny touchpad
hard to find a place to buy from that offers a return policy (in case I can't get over the tiny touchpad)
Acer R7
ergonomically difficult trackpad location
heavy
underpowered
Taichi
Relatively minor firmware issues (seems like people in this thread have largely resolved them)
Bad battery (I can always get an external battery)
So yeah, unless I'm missing something, this seems like my best option, given my needs. I'm open to suggestions! -
JeffersonCampervan Notebook Enthusiast
Well, I've had the 1.9 beta Close Lid for a full month now - I'm pretty sure I was the first to receive it.
At first it seemed like I would lose screen flip maybe 3 times a week - something I could live with.
Now, though, I'm rebooting several times a day to restore screen flip/rotate and am considering restoring back to 8.0 and forgetting 8.1.
This is probably why Close Lid 1.9 still is not on the downloads page - they know it doesn't actually work as it should. -
Well, crap.

Got my taichi yesterday, have been tentatively loving it (but there's a 30 day return policy if that changes). Only driver issue was switching the touchpad driver so that three-finger swipe would actually work in firefox.
I think I'll just skip the Windows 8.1 update... I fortunately don't know what I'm missing, so I don't mind too much. -
Has anyone tried installing windows 7 on their taichi?
I know there are no drivers available on asus's website, but I've had no problem installing and finding all the drivers for non touch screen laptops when downgrading to windows 7. I'm just wondering if anyone has successfully done it? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
But the screen lid utility can be an issue, have you tried it? -
Anyone notice that the default settings in ASUS's power management software ("power4gear") are kind of weird? If you go to "advanced" some of the options are opposite of what they seem like they should be: e.g., min and max processor speed are reversed for you'd expect on 'max battery life' vs. 'max performance' settings. I switched them to something more sensible-- wonder if this will help the battery life?
