I wanted to update that I finally settled on an 11x multiplier (set on throttle stop) and the following nvidia inspector command for the GPU (set in the target of a shortcut in my desktop)
    C:\<path to program>nvidiaInspector.exe -setShaderClock:0,1,585 -setMemoryClock:0,1,900 -forcepstate:0,8

it feels as if I had bought a new more powerful laptop

Hi guys, I have a problem with my N55SF, I'll try to explain...

Whenever I start playing games I always get BSOD, it depends on the game how much it will last. Tomb Raider about 5 minutes, Starcraft 2 about half an hour, Orcs must die less than 1 minute, Mass Effect 3 half an hour, Skyrim never (this are just examples). All this games crash using the NVidia GT555M but not using the integrated graphics(unless Orcs must die, it crash with the integrated graphics as well, but it takes like 20 min, so I suppose there is some kind of problem with the game itself).

The crash is always the same, dxgkrnl.sys, nvlddmkm.sys at 0x116. I already know that it is a driver crash but trust me, I've updated hundreds of times, clean instalations, formated, tried beta drivers, etc. Nothing, it keeps happening.

To be sincere, I haven't checked the temperatures when crashing, I can if needed, but anyway I have bought a kit of arctic silver and compressed air to clean the cooling system and see what is happening.

Now the question, anyone knows what is happening? I have read that it might be the MoBo but I'm not really sure and I prefer to ask someone before spending a lot of money.

    Thank you in advance guys!

Rauknar which drivers are you using, I had BSOD experiences using the drivers provided by asus and recently discovered that it was because those drivers do not throttle the clock when it reaches high temps, use new nvidia drivers to avoid this. read my post from a few weeks ago where I explain my solution.

Thank you for the response ilcavero, I am using Windows 8 at the moment and any of the drivers are the Asus ones. It happened both before and after Windows 8 update so, I think it's not a driver's fault.

Rauknar get the drivers from the nvidia web page, they are newer and can't do no harm to try.

I am really sure that is not a driver issue, I always keep all of my drivers updated. Anyway, when the problem started I did a rollback to the previous drivers and the problem was still there, so I am 99.9% sure that is not a driver issue.

Hi Guys. I need your help. Recently my N55SF Volume up, Volume down, Mute, Play/pause, Performance change buttons does not work.
    the hotkeys for fn+ f9, f10, f11, f12, also did not work.
But all the other keys work just fine. I already tried re-install the drivers and updating bios but the problem still there. Can anyone help me to fix this problem? I really need some advice.

Definitely it wasn't a driver issue. I disassembled my computer, cleaned it with compressed air and changed the thermal paste. Now it's awesome, the temperature has dropped down from 97 constant degrees on both CPU and GPU to 80 on the CPU at the most and 73 on the GPU. No more bluescreens and everything goes smoothly.

To answer nightsrver96,, I have the same problem, but I don't use to much these buttons so I just ignored it. It think it may be because of the uncompatibility of ASUS drivers on windows 8, but if you are on windows 7, I don't really know the reason...

That's good to know. Did you change the paste on both CPU and GPU? And how did you remove them? Any tips? I posted a video on the previous page but that was a general disassembly. They didn't show how to remove CPU/GPU heatsinks.

    Hi guys!

I have a problem with my n55sf's vga. I have low fps on games when i wanna play with my FHD tv (in FHD), i know that 555M is not the best vga nowadays, but eg.: Diablo 3, BF3 is only running smooth with 1600x... or lower res with near the lowest graph settings. I did a windows reinstall but that's not solve my problem. Furthermore my second concern is my vga's voltage and is heating up to ~90celsius. i take a screenshot from my DEFAULT setting and i think is not just a bit high:
    nvidia_20130824_161250.png

    Can someone help me pls?

As for the increased temperature isn't the card supposed to shut down at that temp? I've had problems with 80 - something degrees. You can try a quick fix - blow some compressed air into the opening where hot air comes out. First turn off the laptop. It decreased my card's temperature for 5-10 celsius.

Yesterday i disassembly the laptop for free from dust the cooler (although i just used a vacuum cleaner...) i got ~ -10degrees, but i checked my cpu's temp under LoL and it's heating up to 99degrees max :( that is so high (vga was 80 celsius max)

This is the end when a manufacturer didn't cut any holes on the bottom for the fan to suck fresh air in. My friend has an N55sf and he is getting the same problem. CPU reaches 100*C and then the cpu underclock itself to prevent overheating.

Hi I have explained this already on the thread but here goes again:

    Step 1 download nvidia inspector
Step 2 create 2 shortcuts of nvidia inspector in your desktop, one called gaming and another called off (drag ad drop the executable while pressing ALT creates a shortcut)
Step 3 go to properties of each shortcut (right click the icon -> properties)
for gaming mine looks like this: C:\XXXX\nvidiaInspector\nvidiaInspector.exe -setShaderClock:0,1,585 -setMemoryClock:0,1,900 -forcepstate:0,8
for off mine looks like this C:\XXXX\nvidiaInspector\nvidiaInspector.exe -setShaderClock:0,0,101 -setMemoryClock:0,0,135 -forcepstate:0,12

What this means is that the GPU will be stuck in low voltage mode and low clock rate, but because it wont generate that much heat the thermal throttle wont be activated and will effectively be faster in games. I click on gaming when I'm about to start playing and click on Off when I'm done.
These values are particular to me but I guess they are a good reference for anybody, I cannot open my laptop to clean it up and replace the thermal paste, but I do have a laptop cushion with extra fans.

I also use ThrottleStop with "SetMultiplier 12" to set max multiplier of the CPU and reduce CPU heat generation as well.
I use the latest nvidia drivers, and found out that the old nvidia drivers that Asus still distributes dont do thermal throttle properly which leads to BSOD due to overheating.

Basically the Asus N55SF generates too much heat to be able to use its full processing power so you have to cap it at a lower stage.

This looks a bit like Arabian to me, but one thing, I replaced my HD with SSD and have ordered Corsair set of RAM to increase the speed of my laptop, I would like to know if it would be of any help put new arctic thermal paste on the cpu and if that's easy doable.

My laptop is still in warranty though and I would like to know if this would void it... if I were to do it! Also, can't better fans be bought and installed to favour the ventilation? heck I could even think about buying some water cooling if it were possible, so to stretch the life of this laptop further on...

    any clues?
My laptop is almost 2 years old but I can see a great improve with a fresh install of win 7 on ssd drive. Still , the PC is very hot and that I am sure is the thing everyone experiences...

BTW I ran HWMonitor and in Windows, Idle with just Chrome open and winamp playing some music it already is between 87 and 96° , I MUST do something :/ help!

@ilcavero: I downloaded the invidia inspector but due to new policies it won't let you use the magic commands in the shortcut to set the speed so, can you tell me the actual settings in the program to obtain:
    -setShaderClock:0,1,585 -setMemoryClock:0,1,900 -forcepstate:0,8
    -setShaderClock:0,0,101 -setMemoryClock:0,0,135 -forcepstate:0,12

    ?

I have 3 parameters I can play with on the program: Memory Clock (324 to 1080 Mhz) , Shader Clock (405 to 2700 Mhz) and Voltage (0.820 to 0.930), at the moment they are set to: 900 / 1350 / 0.930V

what are the exact settings for these 3 parameters for the 2 modes? Thanks in Advance :)

can anyone please help me with the settings for Memory Clock, Shader Clock and Voltage to make the nvidia graphic card run in game mode or normal desktop use? I cannot interpret the settings of ilcavero on my own since they upgraded the version and one cannot launch the command lines anymore...

    Hello everyone,
Here i come up with an issue that this computer's over heating issue is a chronical sickness. I sent my n55sf to the service 3 times for the same issue but nothing has changed! They only applied a new thermal paste and cleaned fan at every time. My friend has the same laptop and he is busy with consumer right issue now, we are ahead to take our money back from asus! I love Asus revolutionary products, but this serie has overheating problem . I don't think you can solve the heating issue, don't waste your time. Here is the result

Hi Fede78, I do have the latest nvidia inspector and drivers and the command works like a charm, I don't know how to set the P state mode in any other way besides the command line (-forcepstate) and that's the most important part of the configuration because that's the part that causes the chip voltage to stay low.

Please check that your shortcut is being run as the administrator (right click short cut, properties, shortcut tab, advanced, Run as administrator), mine does and that might be what's causing you problems. If you are still having problems fire me an email at ilcavero (at) gmail

    Thanks ilcavero!
I will retry, although I have been advised by a friend that I may have some power supply problems, the thing is that is not overheating anymore I think. Now I opened the pc, put thrmal paste on both the cpu and the graphic card, cleaned everything and the system stays at 40-50° but as soon as my graphic card kicks in, the computer shut down and it is immediate, so I think it may indeed be an insufficient power problem. I will try to replace my battery and get another charger but I fear I may have invested a lot of money for nothing and that I will have to stick to computer use and not gaming/heavy graphic use. It is strange because also when I do the "system test" and checks the graphic card capacity, the computer shuts down. So I understand that is when the GPU is used that this happens. :/ I have no other idea on what to do next tbh. If I invest another 150 eur for battery and charger and won't work i'd be very sad.

Im getting this laptop tomorrow, and im just reading about the heat issues. My first reaction is: why not drill some holes in the base where the fan is? I did it with an old samsung laptop and it worked wonders...

I have this laptop now, and I have a couple questions I need answering.

    1. Can the 1600x900 screen in the N55SF be upgraded to the 1080p screen? Is the screen cable the same for both screens?

    2. Can the i5 CPU be upgraded to the i7 and can the 555M be upgraded to anything better? (the card is detachable, I checked.)

Ah I get it. So even tho technically the graphics card is "replaceable" its not really "upgradeable"

That kinda sucks then. But at least if the graphics card dies for whatever reason, it can easily be replaced.

The fan is also upside-down so it sucks air through the keyboard and from the house itself. Making holes underneath slows down the airflow. Best you can do is remove the cover over the gpu and put the notebook on a cooler that has a fan directly under the removed cover.

I've had this same problem for quite some time. I have to start it by pressing the ASUS Music Now button in the top left corner of the keyboard. It will launch ASUS Music Now instantly and from there you can start Windows.

Now I actually want to fix this issue since I'm about to install Linux on the computer. So I need the Power Button to work because I won't have ASUS Music Now installed. Is there some way to fix it?

Last week we had some L4D2 madness at my friends house and his N55 reached 96°C on the cpu @1.6GHz constant throttling all the time in-game.The 555m was around 75°C. Cooler was at max and you could feel the vibration of the fan on the surface on the notebook. Geez, what were they thinking at Asus when they designed this krap?

The system is old, it's time to clean up the vent/heatsink, and repaste the thermal compound.
Clogged vent will prevent heat dissipation to work properly, see below image for reference.

Hello there. I have read this question many times, and I have to tell you guys, that I succesfully changed my original screen (1366x768) by another one fullHD and matt instead of the glossy one.

I bought the LED panel from ebay, (there are many shops) and it costed around $80. The change itself was a bit tricky as you have to dismount almost up to the hinges, but no problems afterwards, and it has been nearly year and a half til now. The cable is capable of any resolution, no need to change it.

The change is great, I was fed up with the original screen, but new panel shows great. :D :D :D :D

I can supply you with pictures of the proper connector in the back of the pannel, in case you aren't sure, but information given in i'net was enough for me. I risked buying it, because everybody said that was not repleaceble, but I tried, and no problem so far. I'm very happy with it.

    asus screen.jpg

Here is info on how to dissaseembly the LED pannel from laptop:

Hi I've had the N55SF since Sept 2011. Yesterday, it suddenly turned off without any BSOD or shut down sequence, power just when off, the laptop was unplugged. Happened again a few times, not on obvious heavy work load, at random times. GPU 67C, CPU 80C. The computer did feel hot but this has been the case for the past 6 months. No errors in event log.

I tried to run the laptop while plugged in, so far it hasn't shut off. The battery is charging without problem.

Is it overheating like a lot of other users on this thread? Has it come to its end now? Thanks.

Run memtest which is available from Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool, burn the ISO onto a blank CD/DVD disc, then boot up from the disc to scan memory.
If there's any errors then a memory module may needs to be replaced.

    GREETINGS FELLOW N55SF OWNERS!

I have an issue whereby when I connect my laptop to an external monitor, the monitor stays on - on the laptop. It is black but the backlight is stil on. This happens when i restart the machine.

The only way i can fix it is to disconnect the HDMI cable and plug it back in. Then the screen turns off.

I am wondering if there is a fix for this.

    I am on 8.1 Pro 64 bit.

It also happens on my windows 7 64 bit.

Please shed some light fellow n55sf owners.

    Regards,
    Merc

Try deactivating the internal monitor through screen resolution setting.

Hey just installed a new ssd in the n55sf and ran a clean install of windows 7 home premium 64bit.

Everything is working fine apart from when I connect the computer to my Sony TV via hdmi the picture is fine but the sound still comes from the laptop speakers and not the TV. Before the install of ssd it worked fine and played through the tv.

I'm thinking its a driver or software issue but im having no look in solving it, any help would be great thanks.

Have any of you noticed that when your computer is completely off, and you unplug the AC adapter, the battery level slowly drops.

For example, on mine if I unplug it at 100% at night, when I wake up and plug it back in and startup, it will be around 97%.

I am trying to find out what causes this, but I have no clue. I've tried uninstalling ASUS InstantOn, but that did not fix the problem.

It wont be anything software, it must be firmware based.

For people that still own this laptop and want to upgrade RAM beyond 8GB - yes you can!
I've been wanting to install more ram into this laptop but official specs said it supports only 8GB. Well, that's not true.
It supports up to 16GB. Yesterday I installed 12GB and it works. One module 8GB, second module 4GB.

FYI, Intel spec says the CPU can support up to 16GB (8GB x 2).
