    Hi,

I'm planning to purchase the Asus N55SF-S1158V with i7-2630QM and Full HD screen. Do you recommend this notebook? The only thing that worries me a bit is that I've read some opinions claiming that the refrigeration system is not very efficient so the CPU can reach peaks of 95 degrees and this seems quite too high. Do you experience this problem?

To the contrary the cooling is extremely efficient, however most people doesn't seem to understand how the CPU works. Basically, the processor has a target temperature around 95 degrees Celsius, and there is no point in keeping it any cooler. My core i7 is rated at 2,2 ghz, but since the cooling is so efficient, turbo core can without any problems keep it overclocked at 2,6 - 2,8 ghz for hours without any problems depending on the amount of cores under load. In essence, the CPU will try to run as fast as possible during load, without overheating, a.k.a reaching 100 degrees.

Another factor to consider is noise. The same thing applies here, the fan will run as quietly as possible during load with about 95 degrees as a target temperature. In my opinion, this system is pretty quiet considering the horse power it has.

So do not worry about the cooling, it is extremely efficient at keeping those delicious ghz at a high number. Also, the GPU is kept cold as well, so it games at max speed.

OK, so after constant problems with my HP Pavilion dv6, KnowHow sorted a replacement laptop for me, and I've ended up with the Asus N55s. I'm loving the look of it, and it loads really quickly, but as soon as I try to go into the start menu, or try to open something on the desktop, it stops responding, and won't do anything, I can't ctrl-alt-del, I have no idea what to do. I got it last night, and all that has been installed is google chrome, Avast! anti-virus and Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'm currently allowing it to charge up fully, and then will try again, but I'm not computer savvy, and I have no idea what to do. I'm completely reliant on having a laptop as I'm housebound, and at the moment my cat is more help than this laptop!

    Can anybody help?

Has anybody experienced random crashes while on battery mode? The screen turns bright and fuzzy and you hear a buzzing sound. I have to hold the power button for a long time to get it turned off.
    I have an N55SF, i5-2410, 8gb ram (4 originally) & 120gb ssd.

Hey guys. Had my Asus n55 since Feb time and having some quality issues with it, wondered if anyone else has had problems.

Ive had a few BSODs now. Maybe once a week. I wonder if it's just my memory intensive programs or something. I code at work, so perhaps one of the tools i use is bad.
The mouse keys are terrible. only a few months use and the main click button doesnt really click anymore. its just gone soft and mushy, except when it seems to catch on something and click quite badly. Anyone had this?
The trackpad wore shiny within about a month or two of use.

I recently replaced the harddisk of my N55SF with an SSD and made a clean install of Windows 7. I like to put the original Desktop background or themes of the N55SF on it but where can I get it and how to install it? Can someone send me link where to download them?

Anyway fitted an ivybridge in yet?

2670qm to 3820qm has a 30-50% jump in performance, and would only cost me £50 after selling my current one! Both 45W. Supports more memory too.

    Hello everyone.

I've got a problem with my N55SF, or I should rather say with a SonicMaster sound system... Here's my explaiation:
    - the Sonicmaster audio enchancing doesn't work on sampling rates over 96khz (after changing it in Realtek HD Audio Managment panel) - there is no difference between sound w/ or without Sonicmaster utility turned on/off. Since I mostly use headphones I really really hear the difference between the sound quality.
    - what's weird? it works on sampling rates liek 44.1kHz / 48kHz. BUT! there comes other, much much more annoying problem - the sound is crackling (in random moments), mostly heard while playing music from YouTube/Winamp/etc and doing some other things which generate sound (or maybe it's dependent on system/CPU activity, I have no clue... :( ).

Crackling doesn't exist on Studio sampling rates (96k +).
Reinstalled drivers for the newest (from Asus website), tried to find any solution on Google. Found nothing what really made sense.

Help! How to set my sound up to be working without crackling and experience the Sonicmaster sound enchancement? :(
Have any of you got same problems? I don't wanna send my notebookon the warranty, since they can literally clean out my files searching for solution by reinstalling system (and thats not the point, cause I experienced these problems since I bought the notebook...).

    Thanks in advance!

Hey. I Confirm you that processor i7-3610QE supports 1600mhz Ram . And be aware that the processor i7-3610QE has 45W TDP. That could be a problem for temperatures, noise and so on.
Tell me, Where I can buy that processor ??

    Thanks.

Yeah, I've a very similar problem. Audio gets distorted/crackles intermittantly, very annoying in what is a good laptop otherwise.

Seems to happen if a lot of other apps are open at the same time as mp3 player.

Was onto support and got the auld 'reinstall the audio drivers' bit. This might have helped at first but problem returned, again intermittantly. Should really follow it up some more, you try anything? ;)

Just to update, I decided to remove the sonic master (rolled into the Asus audiodriver), I downloaded the latest realtek HD driver and installed.

Also this , see method 6, suggests known issues with sonicmaster implementation on Asus, not sure on their sources however, so with a grain.

I'm testing it now and so far no audio crackling as before, the sonicmaster software is inoperable (but wasnt completely uninstalled).

Now I can say that the sonicmaster system definitely added 'something' to the audio experience (especially using headphones) and it seems a shame to lose it but cant see how I'd get any joy through Asus support. The EQ on e.g. VLC player does an adequate job to get the sound good enough for me.

Thats it,perhaps not a solution for everyone, I'm also interested, especially considering the above link, if this is a common problem. Maybe others have more input?

    Later,

    Rj

    Hi,

anyone tried to install Windows 8 on the N55?
I've just installed it, clean install no upgrade, and installed all the driver from the asus website (some from the N55 page, other from their page) and works ALMOST everything.
Unfortunately the only thing that's not working well is the keyboard and the all the key for brightness, volume, disable touchpad, etc...

Has someone managed to solve these problems?

    Thanks!

I did try to reply to Dark84 couple of times, but somehow the posts didn't work. However, my experiences of what worked and what didn't might be history. After I sent some "Mr Grumpy" comments to ASUS Technical Support, I received response today saying they are working on the issue of Win 8 drivers/BIOS for the N55SF model "and hopefully drivers will be available in the near future". So fingers crossed - keep a look out.

Wouldn't the N55SL Windows 8 drivers work though? It is apparently the exact same model as the SF, only with a new charger and a faster hard drive.

Hi guys, i need some help.

I recommended this laptop to a friend, and its a great spec etc but i have a problem.

the laptop has massive lag when doing tasks. I.e on bootup it takes ages, if i go straight to My Computer it took 60 seconds to display the drives and the sound of windows starting up only played AFTER the 60 seconds and all the drives were viewable.

Steam failed to launch 3 times in a row.

When company of heroes starts, it basically stops before it loads the game up and only via doing another task did it suddenly kick into life? However, alt tabbing out of the game and back in can take 30 seconds.

Possible sound drivers, mem or hdd i cant really tell. i ran Scan HDD and the smart test came back okay.

In resource monitor when loading COH the Hard Faults per sec on the memory flew up tp +100/sec. But once in the game there was not a major issue. and he games happily for 3 hours no BSD or anything:/

this is UK spec, 1600/900 screen, I5 cpu, 6GB ram, 750GB HDD. GT635 2GB GFX etc.

any ideas guys? i have also been onto MSCONFIG and removed most of the useless startup items...

    Okay fixed.

Spent 5 hours on Memtest86+, Checkdisk...

Found out on CPUz the CPU was running at 700mhz and getting up to a maximum of 1390 under prime95...

Turns out that the Asus power manager had defaulted to 50% CPU speed max, even though windows power tool says maximum performance. SO i set the CPU to 100% and voila CPU now runs @ 2.8GHZ under load (its an i5 2450m) and alt tabbing between COH/Win7 is smooth as instant response and now the whole laptop is awesome!

Shame its taken 5 months to get that sorted! At least i know the memory is 100% error free and the HDD runs fine. Even with quite a slowish drive it gets over 170mbs in HDtach.

I installed an SSD and did a clean install of Windows 7 in the process. Now I have an issue with the integrated display:

When I enable the external monitor connected via HDMI (using Windows+P, "Projector Only") The integrated display is switched off as normal. But now when I restart and get to the desktop, the integrated monitor is still running - it's a completely black screen, but the backlight is on. Why is it doing this? Is there some driver for the integrated display that I've missed? It's called "Generic PNP Monitor" in device manager.

Can anybody tell me how i remove the optical drive from the N55s?

I'm wanting to replace it with the original HD after swapping that out for a SSD.

Looked in the manual, and can't find where i take the optical caddy out (it's meant to be a screw you take out apparently).

    Help appreciated.

Nothing is wrong, it is designed to run at just under 100 degrees Celsius on full load. Don't believe me? Check the turbo state of the CPU, it is probably clocked higher than stock at these temperatures, indicative of that the temperature is no problem at all. And I mean, do you have any heat related issues? I have gamed for several hours at a time on these temperatures, and it works just fine.

    Hi,

I got my NS55SF home a few days ago and set about removing the ASUS bloatware. But it's now unstable, I think I did more harm than good. I'm getting various software problems including blue screens on power up and explorer not starting itself.

There doesn't appear to be a system restore partition like there is on my clunky old HP. Is there one hidden away somewhere? If not, can I use a new W7 Home Premium DVD to make a fresh OS installed on it? I've got the Asus driver and util CD.

    Hi,

Today I phoned Asus as I have a problem with the CD-ROM on my N55SF.... it will not read any Disk but it lets me Eject it through the Menu in "Computer" any help would be appreciated.
So I phoned them and they told me to use the Restore Partition and to use it you need to press F9 when your PC is starting up.

    Cheers

Yep. All sorted now. Like you say, a lot of reboots :)

Followup question. I like the musicnow stuff, I'm using the browser right now - I was wondering if the player part can play videos? It opens video directories in it's mini explorer, but doesn't play the AVIs I put in there. Can it play video cotent, if so, what formats?

Hi, I'm thinking to install an SSD drive instead of the dvd/br player. I looked for the caddy, and since I'm not an expert I just want an advice: i keep seeing different types, SATA/SATA and IDE/SATA. Which one should I buy?

Hi guys, I asked in the Throttlestop thread and I also ask here, could someone help me configure it so I can limit the speed of the CPU so I don't get such high temperatures while playing? I am afraid I might kill my laptop, and I don't know how to bring dow the temperature :(

Any advice is very well received, I just bought my laptop second hand in perfect shape, for playing, but now, Im afraid to play :(

It is fine, the CPU will always run at just below 100 degrees. It is designed to do this, and the cooling can handle it. I have played hundreds, if not thousands of hours of games on this computer with the CPU at like 98 degrees with no problems. The CPU will basically try to run as fast as possible without actually overheating at 100 degrees. I have constant 2,6 - 2,8 ghz on the i7 when playing games, and this is done by the CPU itself, while taking into account it's own temperature.

Hi all, I wanted to write this in case it can be useful to others
    My problem:
I have had horrible performance issues with my GT 555m and i7 2670qm on games with my laptop and discovered that it was cause by overheating, basically the old vidia drivers that are distributed by Asus (v.268 I think) do not thermal throttle the GPU clock (which is why I had been using MSI afterburner to avoid bluescreens when gaming) but the new driver do thermal throttle and are very conservative throttling heavily at 93º. Also possibly by dust accumulation and in conjunction the CPU throttles a lot more now than a year ago as well, I used to be able to play left4dead and but after a few months without playing I opened it up again to find that it was terribly slow.

    My Solution:
After trying a bit of everything (taking the battery off helps a bit, I bought a mat with fans online that I haven't tested yet) I came up with a breakthrough. With nvidia inspector I forced the GPU to stay on p-state 8 (idle) which has lower voltage, and I can overclock it up to 250/500 mhz at that voltage without problems. With ThrottleStop I fix the CPU's max multiplier at 16 which gives me an acceptable performance without ever reaching the thermal throttling threshold.
With these two settings I greatly reduce the processing power of the laptop but I avoid any throttling while gaming which in the end allowed me to change from the ~5fps I was getting in dota2 after 20min with everything on low, to a healthy 20fps now with everything on medium/high, and with less heat!!
I'm also using the newest nvidia drivers now, because I can now avoid the throttling completely and there is no advantage in using the old ones.

I've never overclocked anything, but I'm going to try this in the next days!

Did someone try to reapply the thermal paste on the GPU and CPU?
I've opened the notebook this morning for the first time since I bought it (almost 2 years ago) and wiped out with air all the dust. But I wasn't able to get to the gpu/cpu.. Any tips?

These might be useful for disassembly:

ASUS N55SF change the dvd reader for a hdd - YouTube

I've had GPU overheat issues to the point where I was regullary getting BSOD while gaming. I fixed the problem by cleaning the ventilation opening with compressed air. Yes, I sprayed into the opening and loads of dust came out. Now I don't get BSODs for GPU anymore but CPU reaches 98C just a before.

Does anybody here have a problem with keyboard letters peeling off?
