Alright I fixed it, thanks anyway guys.
had to go into graphic properties, advanced settings and restore defaults.

To those of you, who upgraded from 8GB of RAM to 16GB - did you notice any tangible difference in performance? I'm wondering whether I should upgrade, but I've heard that the performance upgrade is hardly noticable. I'm running virtual machines from time to time, but if that's the only place that I'd notice a difference, it's probably not worth putting in the extra RAM.
-
It's not worth it, at least now when 8GB are enough for almost any program you can work with (ok, you'll always want more RAM for CAD/image/video editing..). Plus I don't know if you followed this topic but a lot of people reported RAM incompatibility with this laptop after upgrading. They had BSODS or laptop didn't start at all until RAM was removed. Seems that our laptop likes only some kind of RAMs... but it doesn't specify which one. So if want to upgrade do it in a shop where they have a return policy, or they can test it before you buy..
Wanted to ask something...
After coming out of sleep, is your laptop connecting instantly to the wireless network? I always have to wait at least 1-2 minutes until it connects automatically, and even if I try to connect manually, it still doesn't want...
Later edit:
Sorry, I figured it out after posting. If anybody has this problem, check this:

Hello everybody!
I registered to this forum because I saw this thread and I have a strange problem!
I have an ASUS N53SV and I use it with the preinstalled system (Seven Home Premium x64)
The problem is: there's a background image of something like a wooden surface, like a parquet, that comes during the POST, during the Windows Startup screen, it is visible behind the desktop background, in the VLC background, in the Steam background..
Even if I set a unique flat color, like black or white, for the desktop background, I can see this parquet "in transparency"..
It's something like the Aero Glass effect that comes on the borders of the windows.. you can see trough the borders, but the borders have always a main color..
This image seems to be behind all, even behind the pictures when you see them in windows explorer or behind the videos when played, and it is clearly visible when there are dark zones in the monitor..
I made some screens, but when I see them on another computer, the problem does not exist!
It could be possible that the Windows Snipping Tool can not "see" this image and capture it?
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
please help me!!!
(sorry for my basic english) -
Have you updated your vid drivers both Intel and Nvidia from their respective sites?
-
Should I update?
Windows Update says that there are updates available for both the integrated Intel and the dedicated Nvidia. Should I update trough windows update? Or it is better to download the drivers separately from the Intel and the Nvidia sites? -
Yes from the vid sites and the bios should be version15
-
I'm downloading drivers from Intel and Nvidia sites.
Why should I not use Windows Update instead?
Is there any order of installation? (i.e. Intel first, then Nvidia... or viceversa) -
Intel first, then nVidia.
-
"Why should I not use Windows Update instead"
Windows doesn't care it just gives you a version that works! It may not be the latest!
Intel also has download that will check your system and tell you which update to install -
updated all, but problem remains.
it's an image made of diagonal lines, dark brown color, and is static: if I move the windows, the lines don't move.
they're clearly visible on dark areas..
it is visible as soon as I start the laptop, so in my opinion it's something not depending by drivers, because it's visible also in the BIOS menu.
it could be a hardware problem..
I will try to use an external monitor and see what happens -
My last bit of advive. Did you add or change memory? If so when did you update bios to 115, when I updated my bios to 115 it no longer played nice with the corsair 8gb modules once removed everything went back to normal. Suggest you go back to the 4gb it shipped with and let us know!
Dean -
I tried connecting to an external monitor trough a VGA cable and the problem does not exist! So in my opinion it's the laptop screen that is damaged! -
It should have a two year warrenty, call and tell them what you told us they will issue RMA shipping instructions!

Another question: how can I check which graphics card is in use? there is a white LED and a blue LED, which one is for the integrated Intel HD and which one is for the Nvidia? -
The blue led is for Intel, the white led is for Nvidia.
It's definitely the screen fault if you see something also in bios. Or maybe you just have to jiggle the monitor cable which connects to the motherboard -
Anyone upgrade to WIndows 8? Opinions?
-
Yes. Everything is working quite nice. I had to reinstall the driver for the touchpad (it worked without the update but it kept registering presses when i was typing). Also it has some problems with Intel WiDi and some component from bluetooth, but it resolves with an update from intel, which i don't want to do because i'm not using these functions.
Had my licence bought for 15 bucks even if I bought the laptop prior to June 2nd, just selected september as a purchase date and selected Other at the producer of the laptop and random on the model (in Windows Upgrade Offer - Landing Page ) to get the voucher. After you have the voucher, you download the upgrade assistant, let it check your system (it will say that you don't have a BIOS which is compatible with secure boot of windows 8, but that's fine), enter payment details then apply the voucher code. I think microsoft really wanted to increase the adoption and let everybody with a windows licence upgrade (without the buzz although). I don't know if it still works. -
So far, I cannot get the webcam to work. I also do not have proper bluetooth drivers. The Onscreen display indicators for volume and brightness were also acting a bit finicky, but were fixed after an ATK package re-install.
I sent Asus Customer Support an email to see if they are planning to release driver updates for my model (since they have for the N53SM). It would be terrible if they do not, since I only purchased the unit on December 21st 2011 and as such, is under a year old. -
No problems with webcam in my N53SV. Bluetooth drivers provided from Windows Update work fine. Onscreen display indicator works fine, but first you need to install ATK package.
I checked ASUS website, but there's no info about Win8 support for N53SV. Only N53SM, not even N53SN. Wonder why? I bought my laptop in March this year. -
My bluetooth is part of my Atheros wireless chip (is yours Intel?) Because, when I upgraded to Windows 8, the device did not pass the compatibility test, and I had to remove it before setup would continue.
The webcam in my model is manufactured by Sonix Azurewave. Not sure if yours is different since Asus' driver website provides 3 different driver sets from 3 different manufacturers for the NV53SV model (even when you search by the exact serial #). There are generic Microsoft drivers from 2006 that seem to get the camera working, but it causes constant stuttering and poor operation.
Yeah, I was surprised to see that our model hasn't made the cut - that's a pretty big kick in the pants considering it's all driver issues...
Asus still hasn't responded to my support ticket, but I will keep you guys posted on any developments! -
Regarding Bluetooth, Win8 installed all necessary drivers during the installation. Even the graphics drivers were already installed. All I had to do was to install my own stuff (games, apps).
Check station-drivers.com for Atheros Bluetooth drivers, I use them, not the Intel ones.
The same goes for webcam. Using default Windows drivers and they seem to work as they should.
Hopefully, we can use drivers from Win7 for Win8, so the official compability is just an illusion.
It'll take time, last time I asked them about RAM compability and it took almost 5 days to response. Plus, they didn't say anything in particular. -
Yeah, I have the Atheros ones currently installed and get an error saying device not installed properly. I'll look for an updated version on the provided website (thanks!)
For the webcam, I have had absolutely zero luck with the official device drivers provided by Asus. When I open the Camera App in the Start Screen, I simply get an error saying Connect a Camera. Now, here's where it gets weird: The Skype DESKTOP program accesses the camera just fine. However, the Skype App Store version for the Start Screen cannot access the device either...
When using the Windows drivers for the camera, all of the Start Screen apps can access the camera, but it results in very grainy image quality.
I've had no problems from any other devices and the gfx cards have been working perfectly. I am going to uninstall everything regarding the ATK package and start from scratch to isolate the problem on that front.
My only other problem has been getting the laptop out of sleep on two occasions and lastly, on a third occasion, Optimus was stuck in Nvidia gfx mode and would not switch back to the Intel card and required a restart.
Having said all this, this is only day two with Windows 8 for me - I'm sure I'll get most things ironed out over the next little while. I FINALLY figured out why my FTP server wasn't working after banging my head against the wall for the last two days, only to find out it was the result of a glitch from Google Chrome for Windows 8 that changed registry keys, overwriting the way Windows accesses an FTP through Windows Explorer. Now that I've overcome this obstacle, (which was by far my biggest plight, thus far), I can begin looking further into the above issues. -
Where can I get the repair manual from?
-
Well, I received a response from ASUS today... they are not planning to provide any further updates to support Windows 8 for any other devices, other than those listed on their website at this link.
I really don't like how quickly manufacturers drop support for Windows devices... this laptop is under a year old for me. In fact, I can still find the N53SV series in certain local stores. Aside from Lenovo, I don't know of many PC manufacturers with long-term support. On an unrelated note, this may explain one of the reasons why Apple has such a following, when they still release updates for the Macbook (non-pro) whose last revision was released in late 2009. Guess I know what I'll be buying when the time comes around for the next laptop purchase.
Anyways, after a bit more wrestling, I think I have gotten things into a quasi-stable condition. So, it is certainly do-able even without official support. I have my reservations about Windows 8, as it stands, but I'm sure I'll come to terms with this over the next bit.
After sifting through this forum, I am really considering purchasing a drive caddy and swapping out the BD-Rom drive, moving my existing drive to that port and using an SSD for the main drive. In the past year, I have probably used the disc drive a total of 2 times...
Can anyone vouch for the quality of the drive caddies or the impact on battery life, for this mod? (sorry for the long post) -
Hi all!
Have any of you replaced the battery?
Can you recommend where to get a quality one?
Thanks -
I am sorry if this was questioned earlier
I have an N53SN i7 notebook and I am thinking about last upgrade of this machine, can someone confirm which options are possible ?
1, replace 4 x 4 GB RAM with 4 x 8 GB
2, replace CPU with better Sandy Bridge 27xxQM or 28xxQM
2, replace CPU with Ivy Bridge 36xxQM
thanks -
Hey Notebookreview,
I am thinking about putting this screen (the Matte 1920x1080 one at the bottom of the page) with my current N53SV's. The one that is currently installed is only 1366x768, and I would really like to upgrade to a 1920x1080 display. Is it at all possible to perform something like this, or would it fry the GPU or CPU? -
@polar_bear_dog it was discussed about changing the screen. You can change it (search for ebolo user posts) but you have to change the cable also to support Full HD resolution.
whoever changed to windows 8, what version of ATK package did you install? I installed the last one available for SM (i have a SN) but made my USB's from the right to stop working. After that reinstalled the version available on asus site for SN, but still that bug where it doesn't let you set the bright Up or Down more than some few steps (random stops/hangs of Fn+F5/F6 combination, after 5-10 seconds the on screen display appears again with the brightness icon)... Quite annoying. -
for Win8 you need the ATK Package v.1.0.0023
Downloads - ASUS ATK Komponenten - ATK Package
For me (N53SN), it works fine. -
What elantech drivers are you using?
I still use 10.5.10.0. I hated 11.5.17.0? How is 11.5.9.0?
Upgrading within sandy bridge should be possible, but no confirmation.
Upgrading to ivy bridge requires likely a new bios.
Other laptops bioses from asus have "Support Windows8 brightness control", such as K53SM. A bit surprising that lower ranked laptops have more support.
No such bios for n53XX.
Would be nice to have Ivy bridge support too while they are at it... -
Keep on dreaming. Asus moved on never products. We won't receive any more bios updates...
Now I will only buy Thinkpads. The HAVE support for a long, long time...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2 -
My next laptop will be from Samsung. I used to have Sony, but it was quite noisy. This ASUS is a really good piece of hardware, but the support limitation is just a joke.
-
So what you're saying, jmv2009, is that in order for the brightness control to work properly on our N53s with Windows 8 we should have an BIOS update??
I just bought this one in april this year... so I can't think of an upgrade right now... this was the upgrade I wanted for the next at least two years... -
-
Curiously, Asus supports windows 8 on N53SM, without dedicated Bios update. Maybe Intel will still come up with a suitable driver.
Known issues with windows 8 on my N53SN:
Atheros Wifi dropouts (solved?)
Eratic bluetooth mouse when wifi is also on (atheros combi card) (also in win7)
Brightness up/down keys freezing
BSOD on Ralink 2500 on USB3.0 connection
Driver version of FLxHCIc.sys (Fresco Logic fl1000): 3.5.88.0 (9/21/2012) . now upgraded to 3.5.93.0
Driver version of Peripherical netr7064.sys (Ralink rt 2500): 3.1.3.0 (4/27/2010)
BSOD on intel graphics igdkmd64.sys : now upgraded to 9.17.10.2875
My advice: Don't be afraid. Get support here if you have any issues. -
Hi, which package should I download if I want the SonicMaster software? I am on Windows 8.
N53SV -
Sonicmaster:
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Audio
That would be the latest with SM in the filename, currently Version V6.0.1.6733.
Afterwards, you can install the latest from Realtek
At least, that's how it was under win7. -
Hello All,
two problems I been having with my n53sv that I hope someone can help me with as I have been trying to find the solutions on the web for a long time!
1.older version of wireless driver
2. from time to time my screen would go dark and after which it would display a message something like " display driver has stopped working and windows has recovered". The problem with this is that it happens even though I was just doing simple web browsing that should not strain graphic card too much! any advices to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!
I read it in earlier post that someone was able to fix the maximum speed problem (from 65mbps to 72mbps) with the Atheros AR9002WB by installing an older version of the drive. I also have the same problem and been searching for an answer for a while now. I'm glad to have found the answer here, but what I'm hoping is that if someone could provide me with the version number and link of the older driver that would work. ( I cannot find it in the thread) I tried to find the old driver on Asus's global support site and I only found one driver for Atheros there which is the current version I have (v9.2.0.458, the 2012/2/21update) Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! -
help anyone? please?
-
You need older version of WiFi driver? Look at station-drivers.com under Atheros WiFi Driver.
If it does it means your graphics driver seems outdated. Just install the newest one for Intel and NVIDIA respectively.
Try turning on WiFi n adhoc option in Device Manager for this Atheros device. Look for laptop2videogaming.com and search for Atheros Modded drivers. -
Hello Dantei
Thank you for your advice!
I have installed the modded driver for Atheros and after installation I see a lot of new settings that I'm not familiar with. My speed stayed at 65mbps despite the modded driver. I was wondering if the proper installation settings would fix that. What would be the optimal setting for the card to achieve maximum speed? Thanks!
I also have installed both the latest intel and Nvidia driver. However it seems that my NVIDIA driver is not updateable. I ran the auto detect from the NVIDIA webste and downloaded the driver which it tells me to download. Installations seems fine, however after the required installation my driver was never really installed. After I check the driver version after the installation restart, it is still my old driver version and when I rerun the auto detect from NVIDIA it still says that I have an update driver to install (the same version that I had installed) and this just go on in loops. I was wondering if you would know how to fix this problem. Thanks! -
Install this driver for NVIDIA: NVIDIA DRIVERS 310.61BETA
Do you use Windows Update? Try installing all the newest updates. -
Hello Dantei,
Thank you for your reply.
I have installed the NVIDIA driver, and it seems to work since I see that the driver version is released on 11/18 as stated under device manager.
Windows update also has an athero card update. After I udpated it, it did not fix the 65mbps problem so I updated it back to the modded athero driver. Do you think if there are any other ways to speed up my 65mbps? It just frustrates me that I know the card can go faster than 65mbps but I'm not using its full potential. Thanks again for all your help! -
I have had the same problem. Just to clarify the issue with the NVIDIA graphics, it is an ongoing problem that I have yet to see a consistent fix to. Having tried almost every fix I could find, I have yielded no lasting results. The "Display driver has stopped working and has recovered" message consistently appears when I try to switch to the NVIDIA graphics for 3D. You can stop this from happening by moving to an Intel HD3000 only setup, by going into the NVIDIA control panel and changing the setting to prefer use of the integrated graphics but the result is that I can no longer utilize the GT540m card that my XV1 has to offer... Not that I could before anyway.
I have tried modded drivers, drivers from MSI, beta drivers, settings changes in all sorts of variations that have been reported to work, etc... This is the single most frustrating aspect that I have had to deal with this laptop for. Installing OSX and getting a perfect copy of that has been easier than getting a perfect copy of Windows 7 on the XV1.
I do have some cathing up to do in this thread, so I'll bury my nose in it for a few hours and maybe I'll see some progress, I'm hoping... -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If it's doing that with drivers that have worked for other people then there is a good chance your graphics chip is defective and your system needs to have a motherboard replacement.
-
I have a very far out of warranty laptop so any free work is out the window for me. Is this the GT540m chip that you think is the problem? Or the Optimus chip? I may send it to a local place...
EDIT: I recently updated to the latest BETA drivers and in combination with a slight underclock of the card, I have gotten some promising results after this time but I do eventually get the driver crash after about 30 or 40 seconds compared to the .5 or 1 second before. I opened CPUZ when it actually worked and saw hat it recognized my NVIDIA and clocked over to it only to see that there is only 60mb on the card. Could this be what's crashing it?! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
CPUz never had a very mature graphics sensor system, you could try GPU-Z, but if changing the clocks helped then it looks like the chip is dead, you could try massively (30-50%) underclocking it for now.
