Has anyone figured out the webcam issues yet?

From what I can discover it's something to do with the whitebalance (??) or room darkness compensator (works fine in a super bright room). I've tried a bunch of new drivers from the asus site (under camera) and they all come up with the error usb2.0 VGA/1.3m/2M WebCam (that's all it says)...

Any suggestions? This thing is choppy as all hell, no matter the software

Hey. I have had my N53SV-XV1 for a year now and have an issue with my camera (Started about 4-5 month ago) where it does not connect or shows up in selection menus. The only video device thats showni s USB Video Device. When selected the program will eather crash or deselect it (Like Skype). I tried to install drivers for it but only get error from all drivers posted on ASUS site saying "error usb 2.0 VGA/... ". Any help would be helpful. The hardware ID's are
    USB\VID_174F&PID_1718&REV_0104&MI_00
    USB\VID_174F&PID_1718&MI_00

P.S Downloading from the ASUS driver serach website does not produce a driver that installs...any help is appreciated.

I've N53SN slightly over a year now and saw a deterioration on the battery, from 30+ percent to now over 82 percent

Have tried to do a full battery discharge several times but that does not help.

Anybody else facing the same problem?

So, after a few months now my N53SV got louder and hotter. idle cpu temp is 60C, when busy almost 85C. Fan went really louder, but it's not in dust. Maybe it's because I installed second HDD?

Without power supply, this notebook can only last about 10~15 mins before it gets into hibernation mode.

Having owned several notebooks, thus Asus battery just earned the Worse Battery record.

I wouldn't be getting a replacement battery... rather get a new 3rd generation notebook after Windows 8 is launched.

After a year with Asus I finally understand.

When you buy asus you get performance, but it won't last long. When you buy toshiba or apple you get quality.

I think that you cannot base an assumption like longevity and quality of a brand on your battery dying... I've had mine over a year, the battery still lasts about 4 hours without a plug in (obviously less if I'm gaming), and I use it a lot, sometimes 8 hours a day, sometimes I leave it on for over a week plugged in, sometimes I cbf plugging it in and it fully discharges..

An original replacement battery is $45, go buy one perhaps, you cannot judge a computer brand on one or two experiences with a part which probably isn't even manufactured by the company

    I mean overall quality.

My asus looks as if it is 5 years old. While mac form 2007 looks brand new...

So you base quality on LOOKS? Are you implying overall quality = looks? I really don't understand your statements. Aside from the keyboard, I think the build of this laptop is totally fine.

I don't think I'm buying a laptop because it looks like it came from the future or something. For the price of what I got this laptop, I'm saving hundreds of dollars than buying a macbook with the same specs at the time I purchased it.

Not entirely, but it is a very important aspect. I have a 14-month old laptop which looks as if I taken it to the jungle... I take care of my laptops, but the so called "aluminum" on N53SN is crappy. I have small white spots all over palm rest.

Moreover, just ask any technician about quality od resistors used in laptops from asus...

actually when my n53sv was dropped from 1 meter height on my desk , it just got a little scratchy on it's edge ( where usb3 port is placed ), while it was dropped on a stone floor . i was very pleased with the quality. but in the same time I'm disappointed about how easy it is to brake the DC-in jack and I ( I do laptop repairs ) had many costumers with their DC-in jacks broken; my n53sv's jack broke in first 3 months.

@oliviakrk I'm still pleased with the quality and appearance of my ASUS. I have no small white spots on my N53 after 15 months and it and still looks new. I'll take your word on the resistors.

@babak41191 Yeah, had to replace my DC-in jack too. I also bought a right angle connector and keep it connected. I can blame it partially on myself because sometimes I can be kind of harsh with how I plug in the adapter. Same way I am with my Patriot USB drives. Had to replace those twice. Still, we know ASUS could do better with that.

I am a happy owner of an N53SN with the GT550M, and I have a couple questions:

    1) Is there an extended battery available for this model?

    2) How do I know that the "gpu as cpu" functionality is working as it should?

    3) Do these models have problems with overheating? Should I immediately replace the thermal compound with something better?

Yes. Mine has SATA 3. I swapped drive to Samsung SSD 830.
    Here are speed tests:

    SSD:
    /dev/sda:
    Timing buffered disk reads: 1452 MB in 3.00 seconds = 483.40 MB/sec

old HDD in place of DVD drive
    /dev/sdb:
    Timing buffered disk reads: 324 MB in 3.00 seconds = 107.90 MB/sec

Quantity of ram slots depends on processor. i5 has two, i7 has 4.

I have 4 slots and was able to add ram (totaling to 16GB).

@DerangedGoose after a year my laptop is slightly hotter (5 degreees max). I think there is some dust inside. But I don''t want to lose warranity, so if it is not a problem I won't do anything about it.

When It comes to battery I found:
    BATERIA ASUS M50V M50Vm X55 X64 M50 N43 N53 X57 (2545535216) - Allegro.pl - Wi
    (use google translator)

    6600mAh for about 45 - 50 euro.

Doesn't matter what caddy you buy. It's limited to SATA2, so you get poor bandwidth. I bought one at hddcaddy.eu, works fine, but the front plastic doesn't suit well.

Correct. I'd recommend using Seagate Momentus XT for ODD bay, it should do the work. Mounting there a SSD is useless.

Yes. HDD for me is only for storage. I don't need it to be blazing fast...

I am wondering about 1TB 2,5 HDD with 5200rpm. Anyone tried? I heard that they don't last long.

I recently changed the standard MiniPCI card for a diferent one (Intel ® Centrino ® Advanced-N 6230)

Seeing that worked perfectly, I am studying the different possibilities of this port.

I saw on ebay MiniPCI card to incorporate two USB 3.0 ports (My model is the basic asus), but seeing the image I find that there is a white connector.

Don't know what it is. Anybody can help me?

    Hey Guys,

Got an N53SN with Win7 Home premium service pack 1, i7-2670QM.

I have issues where if I stop using my laptop and leave it running for a couple hours+, or put it to sleep then start using it again, the performance of the PC becomes very sluggish and my "Turbo Boost" bar is stuck at 3.0ghz overclock.

Then when I try to shutdown, it doesnt and just freezes on the windows shutdown screen. Sometimes it eventually turns into the "blue screen of death" and gives me a "driver initiation failure" error.

Are there any solutions to this? Anyone else have these kind of issues with theirs?

    Thanks Guys.

    To anyone who can help...

I have a N53SV-DH72 that recently got a clean install of Windows 7 Pro. I'm trying to install graphics drivers now and the Nvidia driver install (latest file downloaded from Nvidia website) failed after extracting files to the newly created Nvidia folder. It apparently wanted the Intel Graphic driver installed first. Device Manager is showing 2 entries for Standard VGA Adapter, one of them with an Exclaimation (!) point. I assume the Intel Graphics driver is for this one.

Using the Intel drop-down menu walk-thru for Graphics drivers (Graphics, Laptop Graphic Drivers), I can select "2nd Gen Intel HD Graphics 3000/2000" or "Intel Core Processors w/ Intel HD Graphics" for Windows 7 64-bit. I am getting different driver versions depending on which processor selection I choose. One is 8.15.10.2761 and the other is 8.15.10.2827, both indicating the latest driver versions.

What is the correct/current Intel Graphics driver version for my model laptop (running Intel 2670QM)?

Also, does ASUS tweak the Intel and Nvidia drivers available on the ASUS website for support drivers for this model laptop or are they generic versions?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Install drivers for Intel first. I remember I had the same problem.

I found some drivers on Asus page for HD 3000, and then installed drivers for nVidia.

You can't install drivers for NVIDIA first, even the installer says you have to install the Intel ones.

    Greetings, Dantei.

For curiosity sake, where did you see the reference to installing the intel drivers first. I'm not disputing that this has to be done. It's obvious now. But I couldn't find it in the Release Notes or the Additional Info" for the Nvidia driver. :)

During NVIDIA drivers installation. It says something like "integrated graphics detected, need to install them first". I think those were from 290.xx branch as I remember.

OK. Here's where I'm at so far with the Graphic Driver installs:

I opted for Intel Graphics Driver Version 15.26.12.64.2761 (8.15.10.2761 - the one available by selecting 2nd Generation Intel Core Processors with Intel HD Graphics 3000/2000. It has a 5/24/2012 date attached to it). It installed along with the HD Audio driver (package deal?). One of my 2 Device Manager entries for Standard VGA Graphics Adapter converted to Intel HD Graphics 3000. The other entry (the one with the "!") remained unchanged.

Next, I installed the Nvidia Driver Ver.301.42 for the GT 540M. This didn't go quite the way I expected. I did a Custom install. The only selections available were the Graphics Driver, Nvidia Update and PhysX System Software. No sign of the 3D Vision driver or HD Audio driver. I wasn't going to install them anyway. Just curious why they weren't available. (Were these selections removed in later versions of the Nvidia installer?). I also did not install Nvidia Update.

After re-booting, it appears both installs are working and installed correctly. Too early to tell, though, as I still have Windows update and the remaining component drivers to install before I can say I'm done.

I just have a lot of "why" questions about the installs I wanted answers to. (My clean install of Windows 7 was not a smooth process either but that's another story).

Thanks for all the help and suggestions so far.

Oh boy, just chill out :)
I didn't see any info about HD Audio driver or 3D Vision in my installer. HD Audio due to integrated graphics (Intel HD Audio), but 3D Vision is worthless to me as well. If the installer did the work, then what's the big deal? For Intel drivers just visit station-drivers.com and look for proper drivers under VGA - Intel - Mobile 2nd Generation Intel. I'm using the latest drivers for both NVIDIA and Intel and never had any problems, not even with Optimus. Wonder why people complain so much about it? Sometimes you can't switch back to integrated graphics, if you run some apps like Steam. The app automatically switches to NVIDIA graphics, but most ppl just don't know how Optimus works.

Guys, my collegue just bought N53SV and has already problems with using it. He tried to install another RAM module, but the laptop doesn't work as it should. He gets 4 LEDs (Numlock, Caps Lock, VGA, POWER) and nothing more. It works fine with just one module. The original RAM module is based on Hynix, the other one also. What's the problem?

Check if they have the same parameters.

If they are identical one is broken.

The other module is 2 GB, but other parameters are just the same. Now I have 4 useless RAM sticks, which cannot be used with N53SV :) Just great...

    What a night.

    Greetings.

Can anyone verify that this driver, Version V5.8.54000.207, for the Azureware UMC 2M Webcam, is the correct driver for a N53SV-DH72 laptop? I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 and the driver versions at the Asus website are a little confusing.

    Thanks in advance.

Check the Hardware ID in Device Manager. ASUS laptops come with different cameras, and it's not even given that the driver can be found on their site. In some cases if the camera works well with Microsoft in-box driver, ASUS doesn't provide individual driver.
