Man this is disappointing. Nothing worked. Even getting a replacement from Amazon, I'm still getting the same problem. Crashes with the blue light on and I have tried a clean install of Win7 x64. Updated all the drivers.

This time, I return with a picture since I didn't have batteries for my camera before.

    http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/7552/pict0155d.jpg

I don't know why anymore. List of what was running at the time which isn't much:

All the graphics and audio manager stuff
    Firefox 6.0
    AIM 7.5.11.9
    Steam
    Avast 6.0.1203

EDIT: Actually... I'm starting to think it might be the RAM that I added.

It's defiinitely a possibility that it's the RAM. If the replacement had an issue too, then more likely than not, it's not an issue with the laptop itself. Either your drivers are bad, or the RAM is. Try putting the original ones in and see if you urn into the same problem again.

Just got the Asus N53Sv-b1 from amazon, after spending almost 2 days straight searching for the best deal.
Now i need a laptop sleeve....any idea which is good? Will i need a 17in sleeve since the laptop is wide? or 16 will fit?

also i might be getting a 9cell battery replacement with it...so need to factor that in.

Good evening guys, I bought a N53SV-SZ454V a few weeks ago. Right now, I can't seem to use my wireless card at all. Any idea what is wrong with it?

Edit: I just noticed that the wireless card doesn't even appear in the device manager. It used to. Any idea what went wrong?

    Hi all,
I bought a N53SV-XV1 about more than 1 month ago in Amazon. Ery'thing still runs well from that day.
Recently, I updated my Memory to 12GB by adding 2 more Corsair Ram ( also bought from Amazon)
After installed those RAM(s), my system recognized enough capacity (12GB) but unfortunately, it often suddenly shutdown (like loss of power) without neither warning message nor notice.
Ah, I almost forgot to tell you that: when power is plugged in, it functions well but got that above trouble when run on battery.
Do you know why and can you suggest me a solution for my trouble?
    Thank you!

Maybe there's not enough power getting to the RAM? Try pulling one stick and see if you have the same issue.

Would it have killed Asus to drill some holes through those rubber feet so you can get to the screws without pulling the feet off all the time? :)

    Hi Guys,

Just picked up an Intel 6230 to replace the Etheros wireless card. However, I'm not sure how I get to the existing wireless card to replace it. Are there any pics in this thread or elsewhere showing how I can make the change?

    Thanks

I bought this laptop almost a month ago, and have since returned it back to Amazon. Basically, I was having problems with blue screens and the CPU was over-heating. I bought a chiclet keyboard and SSD tray that is a replacement for the DVD drive. Since I will no longer be needing them, if anyone here is interested, I will sell you both, but only with a good offer.
I bought them from the links in this thread.

    keyboard:

    Asus G51 Keyboard (NSK-UGC1D) - MachinaElectronics.com

    SSD Drive:

12.7mm SATA 2nd HDD caddy for ACER BENQ HP DELL ASUS - eBay (item 190482181595 end time Aug-17-11 19:15:24 PDT)

    Hi npaladin,
    it's still unstable at all.
I don't think that is the actual cause, due to the maximum 16GB memory as it was designed?
I tend to the possibility of new RAM(s) are incompatible with the old. By the way, it's hard to explain why it operates well when plugged in but not in battery mode.
Do you think Corsair work well with Hynix?
Dose anyone have the same trouble with me?

    All are still the same, npaladin;
Now, I notice that has some crack sounds (like short circuit) underneath RAM area when using battery.
Nothing gone wrong when power plugged in.
Even when I release all Corsair and leave just Hynix in as the origin, I still got a little bit crash when boot up.
I have no time to check weather it works well with Hynix only (as it did before); sometimes it suddenly shutdown after 1 or 2 hours using; sometimes just 3-5 minutes or sometimes even when the system is initializing. But all occur just in battery mode.
Can you give me any suggestions?
Many thanks to you all, especially to npaladin.

I do, if you put your head almost above the keyboard. It's not noticeable if you're typing from normal sitting position, even if you put it on your lap. I thought I got a defective one, so I exchanged for another one, same thing happens. But I can't hear it unless my head is above the keyboard a few inches from it, and I don't think I'll operate the computer that close (lol), so it's not a problem for me. It runs cool, and I added a cooling pad since, so the noise from the pad drown out whatever whine it puts out.

Sounds like you got a defective one, I never run into the problems you got. You should exchange or send to warranty to repair it.

    thank you for your recommendation, Vorlon;
Maybe you're right; but I'm wondering why it only occurs when using battery only.
In fact, I'm in Vietnam; it's very difficult (I don't mean impossible but really difficult) for me to exchange a new pair.
    So, I fully hope those RAMs function well;
That's why, I'd like to raise my problem here and hope would get your advices to overcome it.
In the worst case, I'll try to send them back to the distributor.

You need to check to see if it still does this with the original Hynix sticks in. It's possible it will still do that, in which case there's an issue with the laptop itself.

just got an n53sv yesterday and was checking out the options for the touchpad, they give an option to use three fingers to open my computer and show the desktop but i can't seem to get these to work, other things such as two finger scrolling and rotating work fine, apart from the fact that zooming doesn't work in my browser and the scrolling either doesn't work or is ridiculously slow when you try to use it to scroll in windows explorer, it's fine in other programs tho...anyone got any advice or similar problems? thanks in advance :)

Can anyone tell me what the Bluetooth card in this is? Or is it integrated into the Atheros 9285 (wireless card)?

@otdrummer I have used Firefox, IE, Safari, Chrome, and Opera and they have all worked fine in addition to the three finger gestures. Maybe check your settings on it from the control panel. It would be under Elan touchpad I think?

Hello, it took me a good 30mins to get use to the touchpad with experiments. I kinda figured it out.
So, for the three finger right click, your three fingers should have some distance between each other. They should not be together, or it will not notice it. Same with the two finger option.

Also for 2 finger scrolling, its a lot easier to use your middle and ring finger (instead of what i normally use, index and middle) It scrolls way easier. ( again make sure to get some distance between the two fingers)

I just got my n53sv so i completely understand how frustrating it is! But after i figured it out it was way easier now and pretty useful if i can get use to it :) hope i helped!

what do you mean by "lock button"? If it simply means turn off the screen, press Fn + F7 instead. Else where, if you want to lock your windows, Windows + L is your key.

My laptop had run well before upgraded new RAMs. I read some comments from users who had bought Corsair, they got no trouble. Hence, I decided to buy Corsair without any doubt.
I will observe it carefully. Hopefully it won't turn to worse.

Another thing is, you might also want to consider returning it because the XE1 is one of the models with the "bad" screen.

The XV1 has the 1920x1080 display, which is better quality, and gives you much more space to fit items onscreen such as side-by-side windows. It makes a really big difference compared to the mediocre 1366x768-resolution display in your model.

But regarding the DVD burner, have you tried using different DVD burning software?

I'm currently using 12GB of RAM. In my case, it's unstable but maybe the core reason because of the incompatible. You can see many people successfully upgraded it to 16GB without any trouble.

Ah, do you know why my WEI is so low? My base score is only 4.9 (equal to Graphics score).
Although this number is meaningless, but I'm wondering why it's lower than the other users?

the WEI is always equal to the lowest score

that 4.9 should be the intel graphics score. A bit low, my 53SN has 5.9, but i don't know if there are lower integrated graphic models on the cheaper SV

    Hi,
I know that the base score is always equal to the lowest score.
I even saw many other cheaper laptop had higher graphic rating than mine. I don't know why!?
Does XV1 is the cheapest of N53SV series?

i don't know about the XV1, mine has the HD3000 and it gives me 5.9

do you have the latest drivers for the intel HD?

...and also, run the test at high performance settings

Go to NVidia and download this driver 275.33-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql. Mine was 4.6 now it’s 5.7 there’s also a new webcam diver that speeds it up somewhat ASUS is way behind on their drivers.

I returned my laptop to the original configuration as it was before (1 hynix only). Unfortunately, it's still crash (automatically shutdown). Before added new RAM, it hadn't happened.
    What should I do?

Call Asus. Don't tell them you added/swapped RAM. Tell them your your laptop is freezing/crashing while it's on battery but not while plugged in.

Thanks, essence. Npaladin confirmed for me that the card was under the keyboard and this guide showed me exactly how to get there. To be specific, the card is under the keyboard AND the steel cage/top plastic shell of the laptop. BOTH need to be removed before you can replace the wireless card.

I will say for anyone reading this later that you should take your time as there are many screws that need removing and you should be especially careful with the various ribbon like cables as they all seem to be secured using different latches. Use the linked dissasembly guide and take your time.

Also, I received and installed my 16GB today. I'm using 4 x GSKILL F3-10666CL9S-4GBSQ and it's working perfectly with my various Hyper-V images. Time to sell my original 6GB!

Core-i7-2630QM memory bus bandwidth limits RAM to 8GB that can be used in dual channel mode. 16GB is supported but, as soon as your system starts using more than 8GB, the access to RAM is single channel only, i.e. slower. It's still a great alternative to paging to/from disk :)

just read ALL 59 pages. every post. replacing a older G72 17" gaming laptop. looking for a smaller screen for sure.

glad i read this thread before i bought the N53SN-XR2 my local Micro Center has. (on sale for $959) I'm not into tearing apart a laptop much when i get it, aside from adding some ram maybe. I don't like the missing back-lit keyboard, and dont like the weak wireless chip either. finally, the electrical issue and possible sandybridge whine has me on hold. also really wanted a 1080p screen, not 720p like this one has.

i am also considering a similar spec'ed Dell or Sony maybe. Its a pity, because the Asus is probably the cheapest of all 3 brands for what you get.

even tho i wouldnt have EVER really considered MSI a decent brand.. they seem to have a nice offering here..

is anyone else having a problem with wireless? when using youtube, i compared the loading speed between my old dell, and this using 802.11 b/g/n.
While on my dell, the loading went smoothly no pausing to load.
On asus n53 (802.11 b/g/n), a big noticeable difference, really slow. Kept pausing to load, really annoying....
It has nothing to do with where my router is, i put the asus right in front of it. It had no effect.

Try it on wired. I noticed slow downs but mine is on wired network. Might have to do with combination of Flash player, hardware acceleration, and version of Nvidia driver - these are not network components but one never knows what is at play there.

Other than that, make sure WMM support is turned on in router.

Man oh man can any of you guys help me figure this optimus business out? I'm soooo frustrated.

I have the n53sv-xv1 using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I've formatted multiple times, tried only the drivers from the CD that came with the laptop, tried the newest up to date drivers from graphics card manufacturer's websites, tried the drivers from Asus's website, used the old power4gear, tried the updated power4gear. I honestly don't know what I'm missing.

The only time my gt 540m actually has actual activity is when I'm in the "Adjust Image Settings with Preview" in the Nvidia Control Panel. The light turns from blue to white and stays white, NvidiaOptimusTestViewer shows its On, so the card is actually functional.

Now when I try to do ANYTHING else, check any other menus in the Nvidia Control Panel, load up a game, the light changes to white and then immediately back to blue, NvidiaOptimusTestViewer will say Idle and then goes right back to Off. Even if I change the global settings to use the Nvidia card it behaves in the exact same way, the light goes to white then right back to blue and the Test Viewer just says idle then back to off, same thing happens when I apply any changes.

It stays completely inactive when I view videos, or right click a program and select the "Run with graphics processor". Please someone shed some light on me I'm feeling so lost.

Care to link to the new webcam driver? Was it the one that a previous user meantioned earlier? Because that one flipped my image (it was correct on the default driver, upside down on the new one) and made no noticeable difference in low light framerate for me. =\
Also, how do optimus drivers work? Can I just update the 540 and HD3000 drivers each separately with out trouble?

Hi guys, I´m planning to buy an ASUS N53SV with a Intel Core i7-2630QM processor, 4GB RAM, 750 GB HD and Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). Somebody posted about being able to run Ubuntu through VMWare in this laptop but I wonder if anybody has been able to run the 64-bit version of Ubuntu Linux 10.04 in this laptop (or any other 64-bit Linux) as a guest OS using VMware Player. Is the virtualization option accessible in the BIOS?
