First, make sure you're getting the N53SV-XV1 that has the 1920x1080 display. With your kind of usage, the 1366x768 display in the N53SV-XE1 would be kind of a waste.

Heads up - new Beta 280.19 nVidia drivers have been released today.

I was having horrible "driver has failed, and been recovered" windows error messages when running Autodesk 3ds Max 2012. Eventually crashing the program. I also saw the same error when in general use.

Happy to say that since I have downloaded this latest driver I haven't had a crash. So far a good few hours hitting 3ds Max hard and no errors. :D Fingers crossed that stays that way. But confidence is building.

    Windows 7 64 : http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-280.19-beta-driver.html

Have you received the XV1 yet? How do you like the difference between the screens?

A clean install might help, because while I'm not sure of this, there might be some bloatware installed that's causing an issue with the DVD drive. It's worth a shot.

The screen is much better. I am having problems with DVDFab it crashes the system when burning too DVD disk is completed but not when burning to hard drive. I think i will try a new install when I get a new windows 7 system, is Windows 7 Ultimate worth it?

Could someone please recommend a decent replacement keyboard? The regular keyboard flexes a fair amount and does not offer a very nice typing experience.

Also, has anyone fitted a backlit keyboard? If so, does it simply plug it or does it need additional wires or software to turn on/off the light?

    TIA

I've had N53SV for a month now and most of the time it's been great.

When I open iTunes (or just open it from the tray when it's already running), and also in some other occassions, there is this strange clicking sound from somewhere around the disc drive every time. Not from the speakers but from the computer itself. Like it's checking the disc drive every time, or something....? Anyone know how I could get rid of the sound? Other than getting rid of iTunes, I mean :b

Agree about the keyboard. Very poor, and poorly secured.

Read through this actual thread and will find several discussions on replacement keyboards and here to buy them, depending on your region.

To start you off : http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...-n53sv-n53sn-sandybridge-owner-thread-20.html

    I'll be doing this myself.

You don't need windows 7 ultimate. Just find a (legal) download link to a copy of the exact version of windows 7 you have and use your same product key. I forgot where the links were though, there used to be a thread.

I just ordered one of those, just in case. Figure I can try it, even though so far I haven't met a chicklet that I liked. Still waiting for Lenovo to release a 15 inch Thinkpad with a numeric keypad (no the Edge doesn't count).

Of course it'd help if XoticPC would finish my machine and ship it already. :)

I'm only curious if this full background of the keyboard is good for our NS53* as it sucks air from under the keyboard and the perforated version of keyboard back would be better for cooling :)

ofc but in case of n53s I don't think it's necessary, it's running very cool already (at least mine). I'm so happy with it, I used to have a Dell (Latitudes and Alienware) and a Macbook Unibody, just hated that they always have heat "problems".. especially when the palmrests gets warm and in the summer my hands get sweaten..

    N53SV comes with 1 USB 3.0 port. So you got a N53SN?

I just bought a SIIG SATA to USB 3.0 adapter to hook up my old desktop internal DVD/CD and hard drives to it, so I can transfer files much faster.

In the past week or so, when I boot up my N53, sometimes it is not recognizing my SSD on the first boot...When I boot up again after the error msg (can't recall the exact msg, but it cant find the boot drive basically)...

When I reboot again, it works fine...

    Anyone buy the N53SV-A2 model?

Some shops list it as FULL HD 1920x1080 display and others list it as 1366x768.

I want the FULL HD model, anyone have it?

Great video. Thanks for taking the time. I think I'll order one of those myself. For what it's worth: For the time being, I got rid of my keyboard flex by doing this:

    1. Remove the keyboard from laptop
    2. Bend the top of the keyboard up so it look like an arc from the side (not just on single sharp bend in the middle!)
    3. Reinstall the keyboard

The top of my keyboard sticks out around 2cm before I push it down and click into place. It basically is now 'spring loaded' and feels much more solid.

I do like the look of the chiclet though....more like the Macbook keyboards. Just have to decide whether I should get black, white or backlit ;-)

One things that really annoys me is the Insert button....or better the lack thereof but I guess there's no easy fix for that

I'm looking at the N53SV-XV1 for college. I'll be doing a good amount of programming so I like the screen res. But I also need something portable (i'm going to pretty much be carrying this thing around all the time). Most people act like the laptop runs bigger than most 15.6 and is not very portable, and also has keyboard flexing issues. I also need a normal battery life of around 3.5 hours at least.

I guess what I'm really worried about is whether enough the N53SV-XV1 is portable enough to carry around all day in my bookbag?

I also probably will be trying to run linux, and I heard you can't even get 3d graphics because of the compatibility issues with optimus. I'm pretty sure I'm not going to use linux all that much, at least for the school year, but I'd like to learn how to use it. Anyone use linux specifically with this computer?

My first choice right now is the hp envy 14 beats edition, it's more portable, doesn't have linux incompatibilities but doesn't have the high res screen. Plus it comes with a free xbox which i can ebay easily. Someone convince me otherwise.

At ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS N53SN under VGA section of Win7_64 drivers there is the Intel 8.15.10.2405 driver which is yet unavailable on intel.com. Nevertheless I cannot install it on my N53SN. The installer says that I do not meet the minimum requirements... ?

Besides, did anyone test the new BIOS 206?

*Phew* Just finished reading 65 pages on this forum. Pretty impressed with the N53SN model. I have just made an order for a N53SN-SZ085V which will be arriving soon next week (fingers crossed). Pretty happy with the development in this forum. I do have one question though - Anyone still having the electric leakage problem?

    Many thanks!

Hi everyone, Enjoy your forum and my N53SV-A1, now for a quick memory question. I have recently upgraded to 12 GB's moved original 2GB set to slots (marked 3 & 4) and filled now vacated slots 1&2 with pair of Corsair 4 GB's all installed ok and works well but shows the following:

    12200 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'ChannelA-DIMM0' has 2048 MB (serial number 52262BAB)
    Slot 'ChannelA-DIMM1' has 4096 MB
Slot 'ChannelB-DIMM0' has 2048 MB (serial number 52262B02)
    Slot 'ChannelB-DIMM1' has 4096 MB

    Said Differently:

    Property Value
    DEAN-N53SVPC (ASUSTeK Computer Inc. N53SV)
    Memory Summary
    Maximum Capacity 16384 MBytes
    Memory Slots 4

Device Locator Slot 1 (marked #3 on board)
    Manufacturer Elpida
    Part Number EBJ21UE8BFU0-DJ-F
    Serial Number 52262BAB
    Capacity 2048 MBytes

Device Locator Slot 2 (marked # 2 on board)
    Manufacturer Corsair
    Part Number CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9
    Capacity 4096 MBytes

Device Locator Slot 3 (marked # 4 on board)
    Manufacturer Elpida
    Part Number EBJ21UE8BFU0-DJ-F
    Serial Number 52262B02
    Capacity 2048 MBytes

Device Locator Slot 4 (marked # 1 on board)
    Manufacturer Corsair
    Part Number CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9
    Capacity 4096 MBytes

Question is: According to this it appears that the board is mismarked and this arraingment prevents correct duel channel use and THE 4GB mods should be installed in the left hand front to back slots?

    Your Thoughts :) and thanks!

It's my understanding that it will only operate in dual-channel mode up to 8 GB. Anything beyond that is single channel. I might be wrong though, I'm still waiting for mine to show up so I can test it out.
