So I told the Asus rep what happened, and asked for a completely new laptop. He said that their policy is that I have to RMA the laptop 3 times before they can consider a replacement. grr.
So my laptop's going to california in a few days
-
Round 2.......FIGHT!... hopefully they can fix it this time other wise let it go back again and see what happens
-
-
Pretty much.
-
-
Hahahaha! If I get the G51 with the GTX260m, then I'd want to overclock that as well
Besides, I don't have enough money for a new laptop. -
However in a year slight OC would be in place -
Sure there is! I don't think that the GTX260 can play Crysis at all very high settings, 1920x1080 res, and 8x AA.
In a year, most games would be like that. -
well crysis the textures aren't optimized thus the reason for the need of super dupa graphics card, If you were to play crysis warhead you could max it out with them settings!
-
That may be true, but then I'm back to square 1 in a year or so, whenever the next game with crazy graphics comes out.
-
I hope that I won't have to get new hardware in next 2 years, once I start earning cash ( just finished university this June ) I will buy an awesome stationary beast with like HD 6890x2 and top i7 ( or it's succesor ) lol
I am really happy with my N50 - a very decent machine and will run games in next 2 years - just not on high -
well the i9 is coming out either this year or early next year so theres that... even to this day a c2d is still all you need to do pretty much anything.
Anyways even though asus site says theres a 9cell battery option i still yet to see them anywhere! also do you gus know if there is 2 mini pcie slots on the motherboard cause if the bluethooth is useing one of them i would take it out and put like a ssd in there becuase I dont have a need blutooth card -
Sorry for the double post... anyways
I just took off the bottom on the laptop and found a interesting ordeal!
apparently there is what looks like a minipcie slot and screws for a card.... looks like i need to find something to put there and see if it works
( I know my camera is crap )
-
According to the Asus service manual, that slot is for a 3G air card. You are correct in thinking that it's PCIe.
To be honest, I was wondering what it was, for quite a long time
(better picture) -
thanks for rubbing that in...humm If I can fit windows 7 on less then 16 gb with room to spare i might get a sata pcie ssd card
-
Before you do that, let me warn you that most of those tiny SSDs are generally S.L.O.W.
I would just get a 32GB or 64GB SATA one, get rid of the DVD drive, and put a regular hard drive in that as storage. (and yes, that's my upgrading plan ) -
Humm... thats a plan, well the sata based pcie have a read/write of 150/80
sata pcie
I was thinking of replacing the dvd drive since I really dont use it and it is loud! I upgraded my original hdd in it to a sea gate 7200rpm drive, if the dvd drive is sata based in theory you might be able to replace the dvd drive witha a hdd but how would it hold? and plus wouldn't you have a huge gap where the dvd drive was??
When you do plan to do that I would definitely write a how to guide on it as that would help everyone! -
humm well for low power too you could also use a sata based pcie ssd but that will cost some money
well since I have the original hdd that came with my system I could try this but I would have NO idea which caddy to use? -
I'm not sure which caddy would work on our laptops either. I'll check around in a few days.
Also, look at this thread, since you're thinking about using a PCIe SSD:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=411426
It says that those only work with netbooks, because there is no path from the PCIe slot to the SATA controllers in a regular notebook. -
I was leaning heavily towards getting an N51, and I was wondering how big it was "in reality" - I would be taking it into class for notes, a lot of lectures, and I wanted to make sure it wouldn't be too big for those crappy pull out desk-type things they have in lecture halls.

Kirblar, both the Asus N50 and N51 are HUGE compared to other typical 15" laptops. I would recommend going with the Asus N81. It's 14", so slightly smaller, but it will be lighter, and will fit on the pullout desks better.

avanish11: so how long did it take total from the time you put your notebook in the box to the time you took the repaired one out of the box for the laptop go get repaired?

-
still love my laptop. Just hoping it will be able to run starcraft 2 and diablo 3(assuming i'm still alive when they're released)
-
It'll probably handle them just fine.
-
I can play fallout 3 on max settings (aa @ 2x) and get about 45 fps I think it will run diablo 3 at least on low (I hate sc with a passion)
-
Only game I have that is graphically demanding is cod5 and it runs very well on my n50.
I was never huge into sc in my younger days either but i'm hoping i'll get into the new one. With Diablo it was the first mmorpg that I got hooked on back when I was around 16-17, so many good memories of playing it for hours and loving it.
Glad to hear about the good return service Avanish, I mean I know they didn't get it fixed the first time but they have been quick and helpfull considering your situation. -
Diablo wasn't a mmorpg...it was just a rpg.....AHHH i want to do the harddrive mod sooo badly but have no idea if it would work!!!
-
harddrive mod? speed it up to 7200 rpm or something?
edit- i thought diablo would have been a mmo but action rpg it is! damn sub genres lol -
nono If you read earlyer in the thread what the mod is it allows you to take out the dvd drive and place in a 2nd harddrive for MORE storage, the issue is that we can not find the right holder for the hdd yet
-
cliffb, yeah they've been very helpful so far.
Texanman, you should ask Nando4 for some help. He's great with that kind of stuff (which is why he made the thread...) -
I've been living with this problem for a while, but now it has become intolerable and I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this...
My N50Vn came with an Intel 5100 wireless card, and I am having a lot of trouble connecting or maintaining connections to wireless APs both at home and using my university's public APs. My laptop shows 4-5 bars of signal strength from the AP at my house, but the AP shows that the transmit power of my laptop as being MUCH lower than my EeePC 701 or my MacBook Pro. I suspect that my connection problems are caused by the AP not being able to hear my laptop's wireless card.
I've changed the Windows power settings to have the wireless card operate at Max Performance and ensured that the transmit power is Maximum, but no change. I tried Microsoft's driver and the last two drivers from Intel, but no change. I reinstalled the router's firmware, did a NVRAM reset, but no change. I also experienced these signal levels when I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed, so it's not exclusive to Windows.
Tonight I'm going swap the Intel 5100 with the Atheros AR5007EG from the EeePC and see if the levels improve. If they don't, does this pretty much imply that the antennae are at fault? If so, should I attempt to repair them or just send the laptop to Asus?
Thanks. -
Just send the laptop back to Asus if the new card doesn't fix it.
-
Update: it was definitely the Intel card... I swapped them and the N50 has the strong signal and the EeePC has the same weak signal the N50 used to have.
-
just call asus up and see if they can send you just the wifi card... instead of the whole laptop
-
Wow these laptops are really sturdy.
The other day I was at my friend's house. I was using my N50 on the floor. My friend was standing beside me, and someone else was on the other end of the room. He threw a football to my friend, who smacked the football down. It hit my laptop's LCD with pretty good force.
Nothing happened to the screen, surprisingly. There was a little smudge from where the leather rubbed off the ball, and onto the screen, but that was easily wiped off. -
ya if it did break... thank goodness for the 1 yr ADP
-
If I were to remove my N50Vn's palm rest, and paint it black, would this void my warranty? Does anyone know if the palm rest is removable? I am talking about the brownish piece with the same texture as the lid of the laptop.
-
Yes, painting or modifying the chassis in any way would technically void the warranty. Since it's such an obvious modification, it would probably also void it in practice (although ASUS tend to be pretty lenient about system upgrades so who knows)...
-
Meh, guess I wont do it then.
-
Virtuoosi, buy a vinyl laptop skin and stick it on the palmrest. It has the same effect, but you can remove it if you need to send in the computer.
-
anyone install windows 7 on this laptop?
any issues with drivers
what works and doesn't i should ask -
-
Hello.I have a new asus n50Vc.i have installed windows 7 but the touchpad and fingerprint are not working.they are installed but now working.i have installed the fingerprint utility and it says that cannot find any fingerprint reader .it is enabled from the bios and i have updated the bios.nothing.could it be the windows 7? please help me .thanks!
-
ok first thing you do is remove the finger print software out of the machine. there is a special version you have to get and i linked it in one of my earlier posts
http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/windows7/learnmorew7.asp
Now it does have less features then the xp/vista one but It still works and if its a big deal for 15 bucks you get the same features and more!
the touchpad driver you should grab from synaptics own site then boom! Windows 7 works perfectly.... -
how abou the on scree display etc?
-
everything worked properly for me whenever I tried windows 7 beta on the N50. I'm going to update to the RTM version whenever I get it back from the RMA.
-
what do you mean the on screen display???
if you mean the notifications you get when you do something like turn the brightness up or down... then they should be enabled if you install the set of atk drivers...
you dont want to use the osd. it lags the machine and uses too much cpu when its displaying stuff -
So i only needed the TV Tuner driver and ASUS Touchkey type software to be loaded from Asus website.
My touchpad worked no problems, but you would have to load the Synaptics software for enhanced functions.
