I experience the same. After applying most of the keyboard fixes and then doing the Disable in BIOS, Remove Synaptics Driver and re-enable and install Windows driver for PS/2 device.

I have noticed on several occasions that while typing notes that the cursor will jump to another part of the screen or the focus of the screen changes to another window. I first chalked it up to my randomly tapping the touch pad with my thumb. I have come to realize that it is some other strange phenomena that I haven't quite nailed down on the symptoms.

I was going to test by disabling the touch pad all together; but it happens so infrequently (I'm guessing 6 times in 3 months) and the fact that I was already happy to not have the keyboard lag issue that I'm "trying" to ignore it.

actually i do not think its lag.....what i am finding out is that its the spacebar..... you can press it softly on the left side and it takes but the closer you press to the right the harder you have to press down for the space to take

Yeah I haven't seen any spare batteries for the N50: neither 6 cell or 9 cell. I'd really like a 9 cell, because then I'd get roughly 5-6 hours out of a single charge :D

Happens to me too, But i still have never been able to proove conclusively that my hand did not tap the touchpad somehow.... But i am willing to make a small wager it's not just me! :)

Also it appears a 9 Cell 7200mAh will be marketed for N series mid-year.

guys i seem to have a problem with my laptop shutting off after i leave it alone. I have all power options set to sleep (no shut offs turned on)

for example, if i use it on battery for alittle bit then plug it back in to ac power after a couple hours it shuts off.

any ideas? pretty sure power4gear options are all set to sleep aswell.

edit- i fixed it. It was the power4gear hybrid options that i needed to adjust.

Yeah I have Windows 7 installed. I don't use it though, since I was surprised at how great vista runs, so I found little reason to upgrade. But to answer your question, Windows 7 runs great.

That's good about the XP drivers. I was thinking about having a windows 7, vista, XP tri-boot, after 7 is officially released.

Make sure you have enough space in your in-box. Those files can be pretty large. It'll probably be a ~1.5MB pdf file.

well its only 54 in g mode....and since most of the world uses highspeed g still it would be nice to go at the full 108mb and would only cost like 30 bucks

    EDIT:

For people with laggy keyboards I HAVE THE OFFICIAL FIX!!!!!!!!!!

Request a new keyboard from asus.... I replaced the keyboard in my laptop (very easy thx to the manual) and no more keyboard lag period!

Most of the world is technologically impaired ;) Just because they can't afford the bleeding edge Wireless N, they stick with old reliable: 802.11g.

But IRC, I think that the 108Mbps was only available by using special "enhanced g" routers and wireless cards. You had to match the brand and type to get the full 108mbps.

Unplug from the charger.... let battery drain to arround 90-92ish plug back in
    works fine

Um you don't have to match the brand to each part...I know this because my bros laptop has a wireless card in his computer (linksys) and he is getting 108 out of our buffalo router. I also know this because at our high school i am the student in charge of any networking issues and have to master all things networking

i figured out why it was maxing out at 99%

it was because i had my external keyboard plugged in the usb, i guess it was taking power from the charger because as soon as i unhooked it my laptop went back to 100%

I am interested in the N50Vn-C2S with the 1680 x 1050 screen. Anyone have one of these and can comment on the brightness / quality of the screen? Is it a step up in quality over the other N50V screens, other than the LED screen which theoretically should be high quality?

I have not been able find a display model here to get a look at. I've seen a few M50 models with the base 12 x 8 screen and they are all pretty average in terms of brightness / viewing angles etc. Not really impressed with the M series.

I guess I'm hoping this screen is superior and if so I will get it before it becomes a dinosaur. It seems the wide screen craze is going eliminate some of the good resolutions for computing, not watching movies.

Finally a way to reset the asus Custom Fn keys. As in normally when you press Fn-F3 Windows mail pops up. Nice, BUT I use Outlook and pulled out my hair trying to figure out how to get Fn-F3 to start something else. Changing default programs didn't work. There is a guy in the ASUS support forums for the N50 that found a pair of programs that allow ANY and ALL hotkeys to be reset.

Go here, read it and tweak.

    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...board_id=3&model=N50Vn&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

So nice and easy. Now Fn-F4 can open Firefox etc. and most of the letters are open for reprogramming (IE Fn-P for photoshop) I'd stay away from the keys that already have setting though. Works great on my Vista x64 ultimate install on the N50.

You can even reprogram the Ionizer button to something REAL.

Sorry if this has already been pointed out.

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on an N50vn-c2s. I plan to use Ubuntu64 as my primary OS. The system will mostly be used for software development (thus the c2s, as I really need the high-res screen). I wish LED backlights were available at the higher resolutions but it seems the tech isn't there yet. I'll probably preserve the Vista installation for some light gaming.

While at work I plan to use the HDMI port to drive a 1600x1200 (or so) LCD monitor, with an HDMI/DVI adapter. I want to stretch the desktop across both monitors. Is there any reason why this shouldn't work? Asus' docs make the HDMI port sound like it's only there for driving HDTVs, but it would seem driving an external monitor should work too. Can anyone confirm the HDMI port works under Linux? I'm hoping there aren't any crazy HDCP complications...

Lastly, anyone know how the "express gate" functionality is implemented? Is at a magic partition, or is it all in ROM? Curious if I can upgrade the hard drive (wish it was 7200 RPM) without losing that functionality.

    Thanks!

Should be fine for Ubuntu x64, HDMI port will work fine for dual monitors.
Express Gate is loaded on to the HDD, and can be reloaded should you choose to use another HDD. (Splashtop is available from Asus support download website and on the CD)

Hmm that's interesting. A while ago, I tried a netgear g router paired with a d-link adapter. Both were 108mbps capable, but for some reason it would always stay stuck at 54mbps. I bought a matching netgear adapter, and it worked instantly at 108mbps.

Thanks Freakish, very useful info. I think I'm going to place my order tonight.

avanish, texanman, my understanding is that anytime you're using wireless gear advertising speeds better than 54mbps (the max in the 802.11g spec), all bets are off when it comes to interoperability. Since there's no specification covering those higher speeds, individual vendors implement them however they like, in ways that aren't necessarily compatible. You may find two different vendors' gear work together at a higher speed because they are implemented using the same underlying manufacturer's chips (e.g. broadcom), or just by happy accident, but there's no guarantee.

Even gear that claims to be "802.11n" isn't necessarily bulletproof as the 'n' spec is still technically a draft, though your chances are much better with n than with off-spec "high speed" flavors of g.

    Hey there, first post.

I've read some of the preceding pages and I'm sorry to kick a dead horse but I was never able to find a clear cut answer to my problem:

    Keyboard Lag.

When synaptics' software is installed, I definitely get keyboard lag. Quite annoying. When the software is not installed, my keyboard functions correctly but the touchpad is so sensitive that it is nearly impossible to type without jumping all over the screen. Fn+F9 only works when the driver software is installed. I've tried updating/downgrading the software, no success.

Again, I know this is a bit of a covered topic, but if someone could help me out, then I think I could finally get around to truly enjoying this notebook, instead of being constantly enraged by this one little flaw.

Asus customer support has been as unhelpful as ever, thus, I turn to you, Internet.

Unfortunately, the current and only confirmed workaround for the keyboard lag issue is to uninstall the touchpad driver.

Hi there, I just joined the forum, about N50 I must say this should be announced one of the best products of 2008 :) I have myself an N50vn-FP031C-1 ( think this suffix is added in Europe - in US you seem to have different suffixes to mark variations of the N50's)

The 9650m GT 1 GB is maddnes, sure there are better GPU's like 9700m's and 9800m's but are overpriced and not needed really, 9650m GT runs everything on the market already with high details ( and textures to ultra thanks to 1 GB of self build-in memory on that card) with good fps ( in FPS games I mean its at least 50 fps, in RTS,TPP it's 40 fps) with the exception of crysis ( all high, just shaders on medium ) but even the 9800m witch is twice as powerful as 9650m would have problems with that game on high i think, anyway the GPU's is just great

The CPU( T5800 2 GHz in my version ) is sufficient for eveything too, and in the future there is possibility to upgrade it, say to P8600 2,4 GHz or even better :) like T9400 2,56 GHz thanks to excellent cooling system that-witch with the current CPU has lot of reserve for better CPU

4 GB of DDR2 RAM is just great, I always laugh when people say - why did they give 4 GB ram if we get 32 bit system with the laptop ?!?!? ... what's the problem? you got problems that they give you MORE than you need? lol....strange :D you should be greatful that they give you full 4 GB's instead giving you just 3GB's what would feel like messing with you since it's easier to put in 4 GB's than 3 GB's and since the memory stick's costs went down so much past two years it isn't much of a burden for big company as ASUS

About the temperature's my N50 has 44( GPU) ,40-45 (CPU's) degrees in idle state, and reaches 70 (71 rarely) witch GPU and 55-60 with CPU in stress. I consider this very cool ( literally and in means of temp ;)) laptop, overheating isn't an option here :) lot's of reserve for overclocking here, but I won't do that since 4600 3dmarks in 3dmark06 is enough to run everything today (just finished DEAD SPACE in max settings with no lag's in the game :) ), but I'm sure it is possible to safely overclock the GPU by 1000 marks and it won't hurt the temp much :)

the overall design of the laptop is ok, materials used in process don't seem to crack :) there is just wierd noise when you push the lower-left side of the laptop with you hand, probably made by the card-slot but it doesn't disturb much :)

    Overall it's really a great laptop :)

Oh and I'm from Poland, but I hope my english was bareable to you all :p

Harsh! It's too bad that a company as renowned as Asus has these minor yet very annoying problems.

Any advice? Should I kick up a fuss down under in customer service?

Whats the word on installing XP to the system? Any significant loss of functionality?

I think not, since Asus provided XP drivers on it's site not long ago ( and finally ) and since XP drains less from system resocures, things like games should run even better and about the keyboard lag strange - I never had any issues such as those

if this keyboard problem is a software issue then im sure asus will send us the fix in the asus updates software.

I didn't even know about this software till it launched yesterday and i downloaded some updates directly from asus. They were updates to the bios and registry.

i have had my laptop about a month now and i have not suffered from any keyboard lag (thank god)
