I like to use it a little sometimes, I too at first thought it's just a gimmick and it is, but the Ions are emitted alright, I believe the hotter the notebooks gets the more ions are emitted. If you place your hand a inch or two away from the Ionizer vent, you will feel the ions spit out in various directions and bounce off the hand. Feels like "Schweppervescence" :)

I believe you could likely take a video if you were a smoker of the ions clinging to cigarette smoke, I haven't tried it but I'm sure video footage of the smoke particles being displaced could be noticed on camera.

So while it's not exactly a major usefully functional item, I'm fairly sure you would want more Ions being emitted to really make it useful in anything other than a really small space for it to be really useful, but still the idea isn't as silly as i first thought anyway.

If someone else farted in a car for example, perhaps it would help get the smell away from you and the lappy. :)

Edit: Actually i take back what i said, I have been trying to feel it's effects since writing this post, and i cannot recreate the useful effects currently. So perhaps it only works sometimes... ;)

I noticed someone back in this thread mentioned the new ASUS N81VP-C1 which is available through some suppliers in Australia for $2400 (thats $50 more than I paid for my N50VN back in December 08). A DDR3 card, 2.66ghz cpu, vista64, and more pixels packed into a smaller screen (14"), my god, this laptop sounds amazing and is making me regret my purchase

Anyone had a play with these? Laptopmag.com says it can get a 3dmark score of 6100, and it's a 14"!

Maybe I can flog my N50 off on ebay now and if I'm lucky only loose a couple of hundred, and grab one of these babies instead

I'm a bit disenchanted with my N50 at the moment, doesn't seem to run GTA IV all that well, even at 1024res with med/high settings its getting an average of 17fps

Does anyone else have a report on the N50 playing GTA IV?

im dissapointed. I just got a call back from the asus dealer in my town and they said they cannot add any extendad warranty over the 2 years it already comes with. This sucks.

    Probably gonna go HP now

    avanish,

    you mean extra warranty??

because as far as i know it comes with 2 years. I want an extra 2 years to have 4 years total. Is this doable?

Thanks again for the quick reply

well apparently staples cant order the HP so it looks like im getting the Asus with a 3 year warranty.

I actually saw it today and liked the casing. Will have to get used to the ac adapter being on the side and the headphone jack at the front but overall i think i will be pleased with it.

It's mighty nice alright, it improves on many little annoyances...16:9, Ati DDR3 with 7.1 HDMI Audio output, 5x USB ports, side audio ports.

Unfortunately i personally need Nvidia CUDA support, but otherwise i contemplated the same thing, basically I've learned i could live without the numeric keyboard and 1" screen size for the next notebook, although i like using both of them while i have them. Having said that 6100 isn't a huge increase from the 5000 or so from the N50vn i have, considering that's without overclock, So it would likely need to have no keyboard lag, better speakers, LED backlit keyboard (like the new Asus U series) and quadcores to get my attention though at this stage.

There is a review and owners thread on NBR, you won't find many in Oz, because only P4 advertises them, because Asus have International warranties, P4 sell the Asus laptops Asus don't release here. The N51 will no doubt be released in the next 2 months, i would imagine. You will always be outdated. But yes the N50 has likely held it's value well, so you should be able to do a fairly cheapish upgrade. Your N50 should also have Bluray, and consider the Nvidia card is likely still more expensive than the Ati 4650 card to Asus.

I have not tried GTAIV on my notebook, but the 1Gb helps a lot with drawdistance and similar settings, Nvidia generally fairs better than Ati on GTAIV. Any dualcore machine will struggle regardless.. My Quadcore machine uses at least 78% of the 4 CPU's on average, so anything less than 3 cores will likely be CPU limited on GTAIV. (hence the reason resolution makes very little difference to it) Keep in mind that the 2nd and 3rd patches improved graphics speed a fair bit and turn off the clip editor to help FPS too.

Meanwhile Empire Total War runs with everything on Ultra.... :)

I found answer to my SOUND crackling/popping bug....
the driver that was making problems is Intel storage controler ...

I located the problem with the hard way, installed vista again... & one driver by one.. untill I havent figured out wich one is causin problem...

does somebody have some other version of this driver IMSM_VT64_090123 ? this one on asus site is making sound conflicts on my vista 64bit sp1

If it's just the intel storage controller, you shouldn't need a driver for it. Vista has a generic driver that'll let it work. Look on Intel's website if you want to find one anyways.

    To Zlot:
Both laptops are great for the money, but just keep in mind that 3Dmark06 isn't a fair symbol of performance, because ATI cards just do better on it, even if they're slower than an Nvidia card with the same score. Also, don't get disheartened by GTA4. It is HORRIBLE when it comes to being optimized. It is even worse than Crysis, but at least Crysis looks very nice. GTA4 seems like its graphics level is right around that of COD4(which can be maxed on this notebook). Desktops with quad core processors and dual GTX280's have trouble maxing GTA4, to give you an idea of how bad it is.

I'm in High performance mode about 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time is when I'm using the battery, and I usually go to Entertainment mode when using the battery. It works well.

I haven't downgraded to XP, sorry.

I asked because the entertainment mode shows the game controller so i was wondering if that is the best mode to be in when gaming.

No. Keep in high performance mode when gaming. As you would have guessed, it gives you the highest performance. I don't know why they put a game controller on the entertainment mode picture. If anything, it should be a movie reel.

No. The 9xxx series is generally problem-free. It's the 8600m that has the problems with overheating and bad soldering. The 9650m GT is cool, fast, and great.

    The speakers suck.

The newer Asus laptops have generally had no major problems (other than the keyboard lag, but there's an easy fix for that.) So you should be good to go.

It doesn't heat up much. The 9650m GT idles at 51C and loaded is at 66C.

Windows experience index score (GPU stock speeds):
    processor: 4.9
    memory: 4.8
    graphics: 4.9
    gaming graphics: 5.3
    Hard disk: 5.5

    GPU overclocked:
    processor: 4.9
    memory: 4.8
    graphics: 5.9
    gaming graphics: 5.5
    Hard disk: 5.5

The N50Vn-D1 is an originaly Asus model.

I noticed the Asus N50(Vn and Vc) Bios has been updated to version 2.11, only 1 fix listed.

"BIOS 211 Fix the issue that user couldn''t enter Express Gate via pressing Instant On key when OS enable TPM."

Could you clarify? Do you mean that you're typing normally, and randomly the in-text cursor randomly jumps back a few words? If this is the case, make sure you're not accidentally tapping the touchpad. That used to happen all the time with me on my old laptop, since the touchpad is level with the palm rests.
