Awesome, thank you very much. I'll try installing the modded driver to see what I can get out of it. If that can't fix my problem, I'll just continue to badger Asus. I've read that the N50 doesn't normally have the keyboard lag problem which is why this phenomenon is especially annoying for me but I'm sure I can figure something out. I remember reading somewhere that downgraded to XP will remedy the problem as well so I reserve that as my final resort.

Otherwise, this system is awesome for the price! Really vivid screen and power processing... can't wait to remedy this frigging keyboard. Thanks again for the help.

I just remembered something. Texanman had the same problem as you. The keyboard lag wouldn't die, no matter what he did.

He kept on pestering Asus for a new keyboard, got one, installed it, and BAM the lag disappeared.

If the modded driver doesn't work, and you don't want to downgrade to XP, contact Asus for a new keyboard first.

This is far from the truth. Installing XP will NOT void your warranty.

This is unlogical.....why would Asus provide OFFICIAL drivers for XP on his
OFFICIAL site for XP then ?? to help you void your warranty ? would not make sense :)

    Dear Users,
I bought 20 days ago the notebook Pro5Av in Italy and I found on bar-code MB version: N50VN.
I suppose that this kind of notebook is a retail version for Italy market.
More details about this will be appreciate.
    Configuration:
Cpu T9400, 4 GB of ram, HDD 320 GB, graphic card Nvidia 9650 GT
I had immediately a big problem: "no sound from the speaker".
I tried to update the driver without any results and was necessary to update the bios to solve the problem.
I used the bios version 211 for N50VN.
I like this notebook and Asus brand but now I discovered that in Express Gate is not available Italian keyboard.
I hope that will be possible also to solve this issue and I need your help.
Sorry if my english is not perfect.
    Thanks a lot.

Yes these specifications match the N50 series
    First try software testing :
-does Fn ( blue function button ) + F10 help?
-have you tryed Fn + F12 to increase sound?
-have you checked if sound hasn't been disabled by Vista? ( if there is no red cross over speaker icon in the lower-right side of the desktop it's wasn't)

What drivers have you used? the official drivers from Asus website? ( V6.0.1.5745 )

    Thanks LisuPoland for your answer,
I tried all possible ways and I installed also the official driver from Asus support.
Only to update the bios solved my problem.
I have notice that in Express Gate is not supported italian keyboard (incredible) and I don't know if will be inplemented.

I have had my N50VN for 4 months & suddenly, the ASUS Live Update starts working, where it did not before.

    Has this happened to others?
    Any idea why?

yes I noticed it too - it updated my Bios to 2.11

I think Asus Live Update only works with major updates ( BIOS ) - it does not prompt to install other newer drivers

    So i finally received my n5 c2s.

I gotta say, I am really liking it. The build quality i personally believe is fabulous. The screen is nice, not like the sony FW bright which i had, but it's pretty vibrant.

overall i really like it.it seems to be running nice and cool a tad warm on the track pad near that area.

    Cons:

I am noticing lots of keyboard lag.. in task manager i see something called

    KBFILTER whats this?

The track pad is not as responsive as i thought it would be, though i have changed sensitivity levels etc, it lags to respond at times.

but the biggest issue i would like to take care of is the lag in the keyword

The lag issue can be bypassed by uninstalled the synaptics touchpad diver.

So, I installed the synaptic file from the asus site just to see if it does anything.

though i am experiencing an issue.

Everytime i restart my laptop, i get the Open File Dialog box fromwidows that says run or cancel, for synaptic.

very annoying no matter what i do after a restart it's always asking that

So I took delivery of my N50Vn-c2s nearly a week ago. Overall I am really impressed with this laptop. It is remarkably speedy, but still stays nice and cool (way cooler than my old Asus M6Ne). I can truly use this laptop on my lap! There are only a few spots on the bottom that don't remain cool to the touch, and at worst I would say they are warm.

For those wondering about the c2s screen (1680x1050) I have no major complaints. It is nice and crisp and definitely has lots of pixels packed into a small space. It could probably be brighter ... it's fine indoors but can look a little washed out when competing with lots of natural light (heavily-windowed office in my case). The color fidelity could be better, my desktop monitor (that I drive with the HDMI port) definitely looks more saturated and natural overall. But again, if you need the real estate, it's a fine screen.

I hadn't used Vista before - wow it really does suck. So confusing. And the hard drive spins constantly while I'm in Vista...

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit) on the data partition and use it as my primary OS. As of this writing there are some minor issues but overall it runs amazingly well on this laptop. The nvidia binary X driver is fast and has good support for driving external displays. At work I drive an external monitor (1920x1200 or so) with an HDMI/DVI cable and use TwinView to stretch the desktop across both monitors. So nice. And all the compiz 3D desktop effects work great. Hardware support seems pretty good. It even picks up the webcam, and it is apparently possible to get the fingerprint scanner working too though I haven't tried it. Bluetooth works great.

    The Ubuntu caveats:

    • The iwlagn wifi driver currently in 9.04 is buggy, I couldn't get it working with WPA2. There is a new set of kernel modules in backports that works, though, so it probably won't be long before it is fixed in main.
    • The "usplash" functionality that presents "pretty" animated screens at startup and shutdown sometimes leave the video in a weird state, preventing shutdown and doing weird things to the screen and backlight. Disabling splash by removing the splash kernel option in the boot menu (/boot/grub/menu.lst) did the trick.

Great laptop, I'm really happy. Thanks all.

    nice mini review mambo123

one issue i noticed when placing my palm on the left side, i hear a creak all the time, like there is a space between what i am pressing against and the inside.

As mambo said about the screen, i mean its okay and all, but i came to this asus from a sony fw285 and wow that was one of the best and brightest screens i have ever used.

but i am happy with this asus :)

ugh my biggest fear of buying a laptop came true with my asus

i have a black background but when i open any screen a red pixel apears about 4inchs from the top.

if i make the window small andmove away from that area the pixel disappears, if i move it near that area the pixel appears

lastdon, are you within the thirty days of the ZBD (zero bright dot) warranty? Sounds like it's not a stuck pixel, strictly speaking, but a screen flaw of some sort. You might try booting another OS just to rule out the possibility of a driver issue. You can boot Ubuntu from a CD and test it out without installing anything to the hard drive.

The left side palmrest will creak if I push down hard on it, but just resting my hand there is not enough to provoke it. I'm satisfied with the build quality; not blown away, but satisfied. Wish the darn thing wasn't so shiny though. :)

I am trying to, under the store i bought it mikes computer shop in vancouver, but yet all they did was setup the rma for the lcd screen.. i read about the speakers popping on these forums, while listening to music etc

mine pop and crackled when they are complete at the lowest level possible.

so annoying, i am at this point requesting for an exchange if anything doesn't happen i will proceed with a charge back on my credit card. I didn't pay 1800+CDN funds for a laptop to be repaired for two things in one week.

Ahh the joys of rebates.... I hate them. Last August, I bought some RAM for $60 and it had a $15 rebate. I threw it in the mail the next day. Fast forward to February. I get an envelope in the mail "what's this?" I open it up and there's a check there! Yes, that's s waiting period of 7 months....

September: I bought a VX revolution mouse, with a $20 rebate. I still haven't gotten the money for that yet.

Protip: If you're buying something just because it has a rebate, Don't.

I've had different experiences with Newegg's rebate partner. For ASUS rebates I've gotten them in a few months. For Muskin it took 6 months. I just got a rebate from November TODAY. Both processed with "status-now.com" and similar rebate forms. In the end it falls back on the originating company. Muskin must have waited until the very end to release the funds to print the checks.

In the end though, rebates are worth it. Don't skip them because that means the company is getting that piece of cash off you... unless you really don't care.

So, a few minor annoyances that are really bugging me.

but the good thing, the comptuer store is going to replace the laptop for me :D
    \

the minor annoyances, not sure if anyone has suffered this.

I went to do a defrag, and once that was done, my wifi kept disconnecting and reconnecting, and kept doing this until a restart.

I was able to re create the problem by doing a defrag again and the problem happend again.

Second problem, I turned on bluetooth today to transfer some files,
and then i turned bluetooth off.

Then my wifi started acting up again, on off, on off on off,

restarted the pc, and re created the issue!

i udpated the wifi drivers etc , and still recreated the issue.

I wonder if it's a IRQ sharing issue or something

    weird e

    hey guys,

I'm about to get my N51vf (not many people in that lounge) - and I was wondering if anyone had installed windows 7 64bit on their N series?

I was thinking it'd be good to do to use the full 4 gigs of Ram as well as get rid of bloat ware with a clean install. Just wanted to check if theres anything I should know in terms of driver compatibility and all that (as the comp comes with 32 bit windows)

    Thanks

    Greetings,

I'm thinking about buying an Asus N50, and this thread has been really helpful for me. The only concerns I have now is about noise. I understand that the N50 is cold, but is the fan noise noticeable under normal use (web browser, some open documents etc)? Compared to ex. a MacBook?

Great news! I'll be ordering first thing in the morning then.

The versions available in my country only have the 1280*800 (LED) screen, which is smaller than my current 4 year old laptop, but I’ll probably manage.

I'm from Norway, the model I'm ordering is called N50VN-FP-117C, seems like Asus has made different model names for even the smallest of regions.

Thanks you guys for all your help, I’m looking forward to get a hands-on first impression. Hopefully in just a couple of days!

Gahre, the N50 is literally dead silent. The fan only turns on whenever I have the CPU and GPU both at 100% load. Even then, it's still very quiet.

    Hello everyone,

I recently bought the Asus N50Vn, and I have been very happy with it. I dont have the lagging keyboard problem, or any problems for that matter. I havent yet tried any other OS, so I am currently running on Vista 32-bit.

I found this thread yesterday and read it. Inspired by avanish11 I downloaded and installed nTune. The installation worked fine, had no problems with it. I was able to use the sliders to overclock my 9650 and the overclocking resulted to way, way better performance in both 3DMark and in those Vista points. I overclocked both Core bus and Memory bus for about 100MHz, but I really didnt know if those were some good values.

I am not very familiar with overclocking, so the question remains: What are the values for Core bus and Memory bus I should use to improve performance and to still remain stable? I think I will do fine with the stock settings for now, but I want to be prepared if I decide to play something a little more demanding in the future. And avanish11: you talked about the Shader frequency in your posts, where can I find that? My nTune only has Core bus and Memory bus sliders.

Also, please do tell me if I have to install some custom drivers etc. to improve in overclocking.

EDIT: I just found out my nTune was out of date, so I downloaded new one. It had a slider for Shader-clock. So I overclocked my GPU with avanish11's settings, and scored 5895 in 3DMark06. Thats not bad at all.

Does N50 can support to install Windows 7 Release Candidate?

If so then tell me about what kind of drivers that needed to be install for Windows 7? ASUS driver CD?

I'm planning to install 64 bit of Windows 7.
