The scripts are supposed to run at the login screen after I think 30seconds, when it processes other things, however it won't stay consistent and there is no way to get the 3650 before that point. It has something to do with how the driver inits the 3650, that the 3200 has to be enabled and running first and that the 3650 has to be in standby mode. Then and only then will it switch over to the 3650.

You can just use the Batch scripts I provided to switch to the 3200 and then to go back to the 3650.
I can't locate an attach file button here...

    3200 to 3650.bat:
    3650 to 3200.bat:
Just make some shortcuts to both scripts on your desktop and away you go.

CCC reports 16x for me, so does GPU-Z
    [IMG]

Make sure you enable CCC's PowerPlay and set both to maximum performance, otherwise it holds that bus back.

How strange, I know powerplay throttles the bus...It might also be the windows power settings, Hit Win+X and click the battery+plug icon. Click High performance and then change settings.

Click Change Advanced Power Settings, go down to PCI Express/Link state Power Management and set both to OFF.

Reboot, and see if this changes anything for you.

I already checked. PCI Express / Link State Power Management set to OFF.
Its still showing x8 in CCC and GPU-z .... :(
Maybe you change settings in CCC for 3d games or anything else ... ???

Is it just the 11.2's giving you x8? Did the 11.1's give you x16?

I suppose you can see if my registry settings enable x16 for you, I was recently testing to see if any of the advanced settings can be used on this card. So far edge anti-aliasing and super sample seem to work just fine although VERY slowly. Internet video smoothing and sharpen cannot be enabled for the 3650, so apparently only the 3200 has this capability. Geometry instancing works on the 3650. There are a few other things that get enabled like dynamic contrast in videos and better luminance ranges.

Make sure the ControlSet00X matches the one your system is currently set to use, you can find this info in the CCC's information/software and 2D driver file path string.

Edit the reg files to make sure it matches up, if not then change them to match your settings.

    Hey guys,
So I have an m51ta-x2, but I am having some troubles getting this to work.

Problem 1 - I have Windows 7 Home, so I don't have gpedit.msc or so they say. I think that is what allows me to put startup and shutdown scripts in. So, I moved on to option 2. Remote desktop. (Some forums I read said it would be possible to do by using the registry, but I wouldn't even know where to start, and I don't do much with the registry.)

Problem 2 - I can't get the remote desktop to work. I have a desktop with win xp pro on it, I can access my laptop files and everything, but I can't make the connection. Don't really know how anyway, I just googled everything I could find about remote desktops and tried that. (it said something about not having a terminal server maybe? I don't remember)

I am currently at this problem as far as I can tell.

"If dont get Blackscreen. You will get 1152x864 resolution with 3650 enabled
    - CCC will blank almost and it will give pop-error "No AMD driver installed etc"
    - Right click on desktop. Screen Resolution-> Advance Settings -> Adapter shows nothing.
    - Connect through Remote Desktop session. Enable 3200 then disable 3200.
You must get 3650 with full resolution."

I got there by running the restart script. The comp restarted, had a black screen. I restarted into safe mode and disabled the 3200 and restarted again. So that's where I'm at.

I really think my main problem is that I am just not fully understanding the instructions, I don't understand all the terms! Any help would be greatly appreciated because whoever it was that said it can run sc2 on higher settings, this person is thinking right along with what I want to do :)

Hey, thanks for the response, I tried to import the reg and got the error
"Cannot import C:\fix\GPOforce.reg: Error accessing the registry."

    A couple things I tried:
I tried putting the gpoforce.reg in different folders like simply in the C:\ folder, no change though.
Checked to see if it was read only, but I'm ok there, the read only box was not checked.
I am on the admin account, and only account on the computer

There are some things on a social microsoft forum, thread f9155c3d-4b49-4c26-ad2a-17c6604d0f95 that have the same problem in vista, but I don't understand half the things that are being talked about. I am sorry, I am just not very knowledgable on registry stuff.

Thanks for setting that registry item up for me though, I really appreciate it. If this is too complicated, I would be willing to go to the 9-9 drivers, since before my motherboard died, I had the card working. After my motherboard was replaced, I tried to get the card working again, but didn't remember what drivers I had used. I actually ran into a post that I had put on another forum almost a year and a half ago, and I had written that it was the 9-9 drivers.

I need to go to bed for now, but I will take a look into getting 9-9 drivers tomorrow.

Also, both gpus are on, at least they both show up in the device manager. I disabled the 3650 for now so my computer could run normally.

    Thank you very much ZanQuance!!!
    ControlSet00X is same as yours.

    My Question:
Currently I have 3650 activated. Shouldn't be 2D driver path points to 0001?
    its showing for me:
    2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000

I checked difference with WinMerge between your registry file and mine. There is lot of difference ...

I'm not sure if its supposed to point to the enabled GPU, or always the 3200. I Don't think it makes a difference though, it's just their information page and I doubt what it reflects is what its using. It might just be pointing to the first device in the case of multi-gpu setups. Have to ask AMD about this one.

Anyways, did the registry settings get you up to X16? If so I'd like to know which key it was that controls this...

I created the restore point before to merge your file.

for common settings it changes the values. But there is strings which either i dont have or your file dont have.

This is my registry settings before changes

    I have -

    Merge
    Edit
    Print
    Scan
    bla bla

You talking about on the reg file I assume?

edit -I found a reg key "S-1-5-21-36384944-870177316-2680559317-1000" and I'm wondering if maybe I should put it all under that instead of the "S-1-5-21-52793246-2505249306-3760616673-1000" that is in the reg file you gave me.

Possibly, you have to make sure the contents are about the GPO Scripts and not something else, otherwise windows will refuse to run them automatically.

For testing purposes just place Enable3650.bat in your startup folder, and then reboot with restart.bat

If your 3650 starts working then you can just do it this way. Ignore the registry settings as you can really mess things up if you overwrite important keys.

Though if you leave it in the startup folder you will have to run restart.bat every time you want to reboot or shutdown the pc, otherwise the video will fail to startup on the subsequent restart.

that is strange.... .:-/ My has shown only 3720... :-( And I saw 0MB as an ammount of available graphic memory. :-(

    - so the low score was probably due to the dual screen usage. I use second monitor to work. Second time the measurement with only notebook LCD on the score was high enough 7400+.

I've been having serious overheating problems with my M51Ta, I've opened the back panel and given everything a good blast of compressed air, but it appears the fan is no longer working. Is this a common problem? I've been trying to figure it out for months but it seems everyone else is having problems with their fans being too active rather than inactive

The problem began about a year ago when windows update killed my windows and I had to reinstall Vista 32. I just put a new hard drive in with a fresh install and I'm hoping I can fix it somehow

It is not that common. Do you have a MultiMeter? Try if there is some voltage on the fan pins. :-/ For now just buy a cooling mate for your machine.

Not really a common issue AFAIK. Dust does build up in the heatsink grills and causes the system to heat up, thus the Fan speeds up to compensate and will then wear out faster than normal.

Cause of the issue then isn't the Fan, but the buildup of dust in the heatsink grills.

I did a thorough cleaning of my laptop a month ago and it was REALLY dusty, even though I often used compressed air to hit the outside vents. I also applied a fresh coat of AS5 compound after breaking loose the heatpipes. The thermal grease they used was almost hard as a rock from being baked by constant high temps.

After everything was done, the laptop is so whisper quiet I thought I may have forgotten to plug the fan back in. Right now my temps(testing with Core Temp util) on a 67F day are at 59c (as I type this up), recorded high of 78c after playing some StarCraft 2 eariler.

Before cleaning, idle temps were around 80c and gaming around 100c, big difference! So I would suggest being very careful and do some cleaning, and apply some good thermal paste to replace the old stuff they came with.

As far as your fan being dead, I have no clue if you can order a replacement one from ASUS. So good luck with that, but hopefully it can be fixed easily.

Ok. If the fan is dead, the reason may be as ZanQuance wrote. :) I forgot to write, that I have changed the CPU to ZM86 thus cleaning all the lines thoroughly and removing and replacing the heat transfer paste on the cpu and heatsink. So the temp. now is some 60C IDLE and max 90C after 4HRS of extensive video rendering.

Guys, I want to thank you for the work you've done here! I managed to install the 11.2 drivers - haven't tried the latest, I did not want to deviate from the instructions. However I do have to problems:

    1. I am unable to have real fullscreen in games - its windowed - although it seems that it tries to switch to fullscreen for a moment but then reverts back to windowed mode although the game acts as if it would be fullscreen. I tried the stuff omergul wrote in his instructions, but no go.. :(

    2. where is the "I wanna buy you a beer" button?

Yes, the desktop is at native resolution (1440x900). The windowed mode is good, running Dragon Age 2 on medium smoothly. As for DX10 I will check when I get home.

So as a heads up, I did finally get the 11.2 drivers to work on home premium. There were some small issues with the registry files like an extra "/" in I think c:/fix, but I don't remember.. Oh well. I also had an issue when restarting that it would enable both cards, but not disable the 3200, and give me a black screen. I found that the hdmi out still worked on mine, even with both cards enabled, so I could disable the 3200 from there and it works fine now. Rated 5.1 and 6.1 on graphics/gaming. I do have to use an external monitor every time I restart though.

Also, good call on the cleaning and new thermal paste, I will have to do that soon...

Hi guys! I have an LCD question! My M51Ta's display somehow got crashed in the middle, it's not an open crack, it somehow got enough pressure(dunno how, i didn't hit it) to get some nice "spider netting".
Though it's still working, i would like to replace the LCD Panel. Can I go with a LED backlit panel or it won't work?

Does anyone know how much pins does the LCD panel need to connect? (I think it has a 30-pin LCD Panel Connector, correct me if i'm wrong.)

This would be all, i hope some of you will respond soon.

    Yours,

    Alex

I honestly don't know what the exact lcd parts this laptop uses. A quick google search shows people selling replacement LCD's for $100+ but I don't know if they are proper replacements.

I know nothing about LCD tech, sorry I can't assist more.

Welcome to the forums, sorry for the belated reply. In the chance that the battery isn't really manufactured by asus, it probably detects the battery as 3rd party and won't enable that feature. Otherwise the option should be there.

You can recalibrate the battery from windows as well, simply place it in high performance mode and let the battery drain dead. Then after it shuts off plug in the AC power and let it charge. Windows should reflect the correct battery life.

Or you can test it with [edit] Battery Care a "much" better program.

    Hello:

I am new to the group. I have done an exhaustive searchon Google and this forum and no solution that I have been able to find has worked. I ran my M51ta battery down accidentally causing it to shut down and now all it will do turn on and hang after the DVD drive cycles. I have Win 7 sp1 installed. I have removed the battery, AC, held down the power button for over one to three minutes.

My next step is to remove the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS to see if that will work.

Does any know how to access the CMOS battery?

Also does anyone know if there is a disassembly guide or a Service Manual available?

My laptop is barely out of warranty.

    I would appreciate any help.

    Thank you.

After the dvd drive cycle it tries to read from the Hard Drives boot sector. When it lost power it might have corrupted part of the Hard Drive, so see if you can boot off your Win7 install cd and run a CHKDSK. Press Shift+F10 at the Win7 installation menu to open a command prompt.

Also I have no idea where the CMOS battery is located nor any service manuals, sorry.

Hello. I have m51ta with 3gb ram and I am considering change from w7 32bit to 64 bit. Is it worth trying? Can it improve prformance in games?

Not really much difference, stick with 32bit on Win 7, however me going from Vista 32bit to Win7 64bit almost doubled the performance.

Believe it or not I still check up on this thread every once in a while, and I still use the M51ta as my main computer (going on 3 years now). I have to say it is the best laptop I have owned to date minus the horrible video driver support.

I just wanted to thank ZanQuance and crew for finding a suitable fix with the scripts. I recently installed W7 and the driver fix and now my computer is zooming. I was considering upgrading to a new laptop, but with this new setup I think I can squeeze another 6 months to a year out of this bad boy.

    Edit:

Also, does anyone know if replacing the stock thermal paste with arctic silver will improve the temps dramatically? I hit 80 to 90c while gaming easily.

I still pop in once every week or so to check for new posts.

I love the laptop and have no need to replace it until it stops working on me. :) I'm glad to have helped out.

I've replaced the stock thermal grease with some AS5 and on a cool day it never goes much above 80c, however on a hot day it will get up to the 90s still. Having a cooling pad really helps it as well. I'm idle on a 26c day at 61c.

It helps but isn't a complete solution, it just doesn't have enough space for proper air flow.

Hey ZanQuance... I have to restart with your batch file and blind login/run enable3650 everytime I turn on my computer. Is this normal or is there an easier way to shutdown and restart?

It's normal, the reason is that during login both GPUs are enabled and the display is blank. It's only after login that the scripts switch you over to the 3650.

If you disable your login password so that it boots to desktop, then the script will enable the display after a short delay. However there is no known way to get the display working at the login screen without using the 3200.

Problem is that you cannot switch to the 3650 unless both are enabled at the time of login. So if you want to use the 3650 at all you have to either deal with the blind login, or disable it all together and just use the 3200. :(

I couldn't find a way to init the display during login and have given up working on this further.

I don't know if this would be considered off topic, but when this laptop came out AMD was touting how awesome dual switchable graphics would in laptops be and then they abandoned the idea with no explanation.

Now they have the new A8 fusion platform with dual graphics and crossfire. I was pretty excited about the whole thing, but it seems pretty similar to how they hyped up this puma platform.. I love AMD, but it is so hard to trust them with driver support.
