    Hi everyone!
I got my asus m50vm last week. But when I tried Skype for the first time today, was the inbuild microphone volum very very low. I have tried allmost everything in windows to figure it out, but nothings helps. I have also tried to google it, but it seems that no one has the answer to this problem. Can anyone with the same notebook please help me, or has anyone the same problem? I run vista 32bit.

    Hi mate,

I also had a fiddle around with the mic controls the other night. I couldn't really get any decent sound recorded from it either. You're best bet is to get a headset (which I'll be getting also for Skype). I'm gonna have more of a play with it so if you figure it out before I do let me know!

go to control panel -> sound -> recording -> properties -> levels, adjust the mic levels here.

mine are: microphone: 100, boost: +20.0dB. the mic works great.

Just bought this laptop the other day and it's great. However, does any know how to make that when pressing the Play Button, Stop Button and Back and Forward Buttons on the touch pad in media mode and with the function key works with iTunes? I have configured the media button to launch iTunes and the volume control works, however the buttons I mentioned don't work with iTunes. Any ideas? Sorry if covered before. And no I am not converting to the media player that it uses as I wont be pulled away from iTunes.

EDIT: Ok, let me be more specific. The buttons work whilst actually in iTunes, but not if in another window. My old laptop could play and stop songs whilst viewing another window, so I guess I'm used to it. But is there a way anyway?

hmmm...have allready tried it,but dosent seem to help. The sound I hear when I play the record of something I have played in is very low, even when I set the boos for +30db. I called asus service in Oslo, Norway. The guy I talked with said he never has heard about the same problem. I have also installed the sounddriver from the driver cd, without any change.
I am verypleased if there is someone who can help me :)

That feature is cool, but a security hazard. It works with a photo of you, assuming perhaps that the lighting is the same. :)

    WIRELESS CARD.

I have the B1 with the Atheros card i think it was sth like 928x... It says it supports wireless N... But I have a N router (LINKSYS WRT-160N) and the maximum speed that the laptop can connect with the router is at 54mbps...And this is with the router right beside the laptop (i did this just for testing it out).

To try and fix this problem i also did a driver update for it. But nothing happened.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any tips to solve this issue?

    Thanks for your time.

As far as I'm aware the only difference between the A1 and B1(which I own) is the processor speed (B1 is a little faster than the A1). I would highly recommend either model. I've had my B1 for a few weeks now. It has a fantastic screen is quick and I'm really happy with it. I had my doubts about ASUS but they are a really good brand

I would actually suggest against turning off UAC, unless you're confident that you can manage the security of the computer on your own.

There are many tips on Vista, see e.g., my ASUS-custom guide in my signature; there's also a more comprehensive (but overenthusiastic) Vista tweaks guide linked in there.

It is normal during the setup period when you install software, configure services etc.

You could turn it back on once you are done with all these things.

Haha I know the answer to that one! Go to your start menu and click "Run" if your in XP. You then type in msconfig. If your in Vista, just type msconfig into the search bar that appears above the Vista orb when you click the start menu. Hope that helps!

Another thing, Ive been getting "Configuring updates stage 2 or 3" when I shut down the computer, and "Configuring updates stage 3 of 3" when booting into windows. Anybody know what that is? I got that like, 3 times now.

One more thing, do I use vista's partition manager to resize my OS HDD? Or do you guys recommend any other programs and such?

    Thanks again :)

Well those configuring of updates is what happens when Windows Update well, updates :). It should happen that often as once the updates are done, there shouldn't be anymore unless you're not completely up to date.

For the resizing of positions, I just use the OS's partition manager, shouldn't be much of a difference I think...

Yep, I got that kind of extra-spurious-configuring updates things. I did not solve them, I don't remember if they went away, they must have after a while.

Use Vista's integrated partition manager, just backup your personal data first since things can go wrong and the data on the HDD can be lost.

Ok, and another thing, I cant seem to find where the integrated partition manager is (God, I feel so useless :(), so, mind telling me where it is?

With that, Im also curious as to what happens when I resize my OS to a smaller size? I mean, right now it has a 150GB partition, and if I resize it to 80GB, what happens to the 70GB? Does it get combined with my other partition or what?

Thanks again guys :) And Rep for you E.B.E., for that awesome thread :)

Right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Management. At least that's how it works in XP.

Ideally the data should get relocated to the smaller 80GB portion of the HDD. That's what has to happen.

Thanks, but Ill make my question clearer/rephrased.

300GB HDD for example, and atm it has 2 partitions, specifically 2 150GB partitions.

I want to resize the first 150 GB partition to be just 80gb. What happens to the 70GB? Does it make a new partition, making it have 3 partitions all in all, or does it get combined with the second partition, which turns the second partition into a total of 220GB?

Hope this one's clear now, haha :)

The 70GB is then free space, which can be added to another partition, the 2nd in your case.

Sorry I misread your earlier post.

    No problem, and thanks.

Though, do I have to manually add that, or will it automatically go there?

Sorry, I havent really tried doing the partition because defragging the OS partition with like, 30 to 40GB of data takes long, and its not even done yet. Does defragging in vista really take this long? @_@

    Hi,
I've read a few posts where people have problems with the low volume on the microphone. I was wondering, is there another setting somewhere (for a1) that controls its volume, other than the one under sounds > recording? Because when I tried to "phone" my friend on MSN, he could barely hear what I was saying  :(

As for the person who has problems with XP on M50VM a1 / b1, I don't know if it's just me, but I had a lot of problems with XP on the a1, like things were really unstable, and certain functions would stop working; so I just grudgingly reverted to vista :(

Waks: Yes, defragging in Vista seems to be redesigned and takes a lot of time. I would use a 3rd party tool to defrag -- or else just rely on the Vista partition manager to know what it's doing, and not worry about defragging.

You'll need to extend the partition over the free space manually.

I was playing NBA 2k9 on it last night, and it ran perfectly, all on high settings.

Today at work I played it, and the first thing I noticed was the Dreamscape wallpaper was not animated (second time I noticed this at work), then when i went in to play the game, I had to turn all the stadium/crowd setting to low to get it to play at a somewhat playable frame rate.

The other day when I was showing a coworker the laptop, we both noticed the dreamscape background was not running, so when I was using it last night, I made a mental note that it was pretty obvious that it moves and that there must have been something wrong the other day.

Well, the only connection I can make is that I didn't bring the AC adapter to work today, so the only thing that has changed since last night is that the Laptop is running directly off of the battery. Still at work and don't have the ac adapter, so I'm wondering if this is common for the computer to go into a battery saver mode and disable some things?

Yeah I tried that. I shrank my OS partition, but when I tried to extend the data partition to accommodate the unallocated partition, the "Extend Volume" option is greyed out. What do you think I should do now?

And I thought I should ask here too, but what GPU temps should make me worry? Highest I got was around 71 ~ 73, while playing Crysis.

Around 57 while surfing, chatting etc.

    @Bunny
I maxed the Mic volume and boost in the recording options. MSN sounds fine now. Dont forget to max the volume there too btw.

Yes of course. Both the CPU and, especially relevant for your situation I think, the GPU are downclocking to save power on battery. You can change their behavior.

In that case, use a 3rd party partition manager such as PartitionMagic or qtParted. The latter is Linux, and can be used for instance via a Knoppix LiveCD.

    The GPU temps are fine.

Also, what GPU temp should I start worrying about?

(Sorry for too many questions, as this is my first laptop, and really know a few things about most stuff :( Thanks for bearing with me)

Personally I do not choose this otherwise good laptop due to this weird layout. You could finally get used to it, but then this destroys the habits you got with other laptops I still own.

    ____

As for the layout, it took me awhile to get used to just because every thing seems so shifted, but I'm still not used to where the del, home, end keys are and I have used it for a bit over a month now. But it just might be me :p

    ____

Oh another question is: does anyone know how to activate the multimedia keys on the touchpad? And is there somewhere on the touch pad that deactivates the use of the touchpad? Because my touchpad keeps turning off by itself =/

    ____

Question number 234234242 >.>" *I swear I'll stop asking questions for awhile <.<*
But does anyone know where you can get laptop covers for this laptop? [Not including xoticpc.com (I can't post links =.=")] But like anywhere else that's more affordable lol?

To activate the multimedia just tap MODE on the upper right corner of the touchpad. If that doesn't work, it means you your multimedia touchpad is disabled and you'll need to enable it in your mouse properties device settings. To deactivate the touchpad, you'll have to use Fn-F9. I don't think you can deactivate it on the touchpad.

If you google "laptop skins" or "laptop covers" you'll see a plethora of websites/companies that offer laptop covers - some even customizable.

Anybody try the new 209 BIOS yet? Any idea what changes are there, if any? The only thing listed that I see is "Change Ezflash revision to 1.14" under the download listing. There is also a gap between the last posted BIOS (207), and this one, so perhaps there are more changes not mentioned.

I wonder if 209 BIOS fixes key combinations?
