I don;t know what to suggest next, maybe an owner of a notebook with a light sensor can help you.

You need ATK drivers, ATK hotkey, and ATK Media for those things to work. Together with the Synaptics drivers, probably. Do you have all this installed?

Hi, I hardly solved my issue : I updated the bios with the version 207, and the sensor light seems to be disabled but not thanks to the FN+A ; so now I can control the brightness with FN+F5/F6, but the brigtness isn't at the maximum, nevertheless it's better than before.
I will try to give an order to the installation of drivers to see if this, can solve completely my issue.

Edit : So, I didn't succeed to solve completely the issue, I'll wait a futur update of the bios or driver which maybe will solve this.

Edit 2 : YES !!!! I've found the issue : so I'm french and thus I have an azerty keyboard, and asus didn't change the shorcut for azerty keyboard to disable light sensor, so I have to push FN+Q !
I reinstalled drivers/computer so many times, while it was just a problem of shortcut azerty/qwerty
Thanks E.B.E. for giving me a help.

I had a Sony FW140D for about a week. I returned it and ordered an Asus M50VM-B1. Why? About the same price (when include warranty cost) but B1 has a faster CPU, more RAM, better graphics card, fast-start option, comes with recovery DVD, driver CD, case, mouse, and better warranty (1 year accidental damage). In addition, when playing DVDs I was very disappointed with the Sony screen and audio.

How are the speakers in the M50VM? Trying to decide between this and a 15 or 17 inch with 4.1 speakers (preferably as light as possible).

Hah that's really annoying. It's one of those stupid things that happen... and you waste a lot of time with. But it makes sense, I think that shortcut may be coded at the BIOS level and they use the physical address of the key, before any keyboard layout is applied.

If you check loudness equalization in the realtek controls, it should increase the sound.

Not the M70 17" but there are some 17" machines with 4.1 (the MSI 17 inch comes to mind, and it's only about a pound heavier, maybe not even that).

Loudness is kind of important to me, but it doesn't need to be super-loud. Big gripe on my Compal is at max volume ANY sort of ambient noise will drown out the speakers, they're so weak. And sometimes even with no ambient noise I have to put my ear to it to hear it. I'd like to be able to put the machine up on my dresser or something to watch DVDs at times.

Well I've had an M50VM for about 2 weeks now and I gotta say it's a great laptop.

I had some initial troubles with the HD, but I ran a recovery tool and did not have to RMA the computer.

However now I just took a peek at my dxdiag.exe and it shows my video card as being in posession of 2799 MB of RAM, now I'm not sure where this is all coming from, but I'm assuming that it's being allocated some system memory, although my system shows itself as having 4 GB.

Anyone know what could be going on?

ADDED: I have installed the 177.98 version of the video drivers.
Also I have installed Windows Vista 64-bit edition

Is there any settings i can set the screen to so it reduces reflection/glare?
Due to atm i am getting a strong relection/glare coming off the screen.
In fact i can see my image during the day coming off the screen while indoors all the time.

Also is there any protection filters i can purchase to reduce the reflection/glare?

Other than that the laptop is performing really good

Hi, I know you already posted a thread about this and are eager to find a solution. But you shouldn't typically cross-post.

I know how bad glossy screens can be, unfortunately I don't know of a way to fix it. Maybe change the orientation of the computer such that light falls at a different angle?

i did the bios update to 207. previously, i had the older version that came with the lappy i think it was 205... anyway i had slight keyboard lag before... and after i did the update, it didnt fix itself immediately but right now as i am typing it is gone. i think the keyboard lag issue is kinda subjective cuz you sort of "learn" and adapt to the keyboard as you use it more and more.

im running vista ultimate 64 btw. on a b1.

I have a M50Vm-B2 (I received it, and officially became an owner, on Wednesday 9/10/2008 :D ). I'm running the 205 BIOS and Vista Home Premium 64-bit, and I haven't (for the five days I've used it so far) experienced any keyboard lag at all. :p

I wonder what to attribute my non-problem to?!? (Configuration by the reseller I bought from, my typing technique, or pure luck.) ;)

Could be the whole Vista 64-bit thing. The keyboard lag is from the software, not the touchpad itself obviously, and 64-bit software would be different so that could be why you aren't experiencing it.

M50VM-B2 (mine included), comes with 32-bit Vista by default, as you probably know.

I just got my M50VM-B2 today and I installed Vista Business 64-bit. Wow, it's one hell of a laptop; well-built. Although, I'm having problems with the webcam "not starting", according to the device manager. Worked fine in the original 32-bit, of course.

Does anyone have 64-bit drivers for the webcam? It's listed in the device manager as a Chicony EM2760 (PID=B033).

    Thanks in advanced! :)

There should be 64-bit drivers for the Chicony camera on the M50 driver CD that should have came with your notebook. You will find it located in the:
D:\SOFTWARE\CMOS_CAMERA\CHICONY_CNF6150\VISTA32_64 directory, and it should be labeled 2ksetup64

If you don't have them let me know, and I'll find a way to send you a copy of the file(s).

Also...the Fn+F2 combo does not work neither, only putting it to sleep or a restart will turn the WiFi back on. Anyone else with this problem amd are there fixes?

I upgraded to the 64-bit version (like many people here), and I haven't encountered any compatibility problems since most 32-bit programs still install (in the program files x86 directory) and run fine in the 64-bit OS. Applications programmed for 64-bit systems have been tested to run faster than 32-bit programs in a 32-bit environment, and the 64-bit system has access to all 4GB of RAM on the system.

Do any of your hots keys work (ambient light sensor, brightness, volume)? If none of your other FN+ hotkeys work then you may need to launch Hcontrol in C:\Program Files (x86)\ATK Hotkey (nonx86 directory for 32-bit OS) to enable the hotkeys.

What do you mean WiFi catching to turn of WiFi? Have you tried flipping the WiFi switch (bottom left corner of the notebook) on and off as well as using the FN+F2 key?

Im running Vista Ultimate 64-Bit on my ASUS M50VM-A1 and everything seems to work great! 99% of the applications I tried to installed work, I only had problems with one program but its to do with a driver issue and is currently in BETA stage which they are hopefully gonna fix.... But overall, I think the 64-Bit works fine. Sometime down the road im gonna partition the HD and install XP 32-Bit for fun :p

So if I want to upgrade to 64bit, do I have to buy the entire OS, not just the upgrade? This is what Microsoft's website implies.

I didn't think of running the setup file that came with it, just was trying the drivers directly. Works fine now, thanks!

Although, I just noticed my mic isn't picking up any sound. Any ideas? I'm not sure which driver to go fiddling around with. [Waks - It's embedded discreetly to the right of the webcam]

And I'm not fully sure, but I think I'm also victim to those keyboard problems mentioned throughout the topic. Might just be my clumsy typing, though.

Hi guys. I'm struggling with the no 802.11n problem. I am using a WRT350N with DD-WRT v24 SP1. This version of DD-WRT claims to have many Atheros specific bug & performance fixes. I've tried 3 different Vista 64 driver revisions to no avail. Has a surefire fix for this problem been discovered yet?

Yes, that is the correct driver. Remember too that you have to manually download & overwrite the stock INF file with the one from that site. Or you'll get the typical "unsupported device" error.

I've been using the new 178 set for about 24 hours and its just as good & fast as its 177 precursors minus a few bugs I'd been having with .92.

Well! Hello to all enthusiasts, computer whiz's, hardcore gamers and super mega-lightning power nerds!

After a week of research and development, I happy to say that I am about 4 days away from placing the order for my first laptop...the M50VM-B1 *insert cheer here*

After discarding several options; the XPS M1530 (seem to be as many bad experiences as there are good ones), the G50V -A1/A2 (a little more than I wanted to spend in aid of my impulsive buying) and the HP dv5t (didn't really grab me, wanted more bang) I have decided that the M50VM will suit my needs.

While the last 2 years have been spent "WoWing" for 6-18 hours a day (yeah, it's a little addictive) and many years before playing the other Blizzard franchises, these days I seemed to have slowed down in my gaming somewhat, with the odd all nighter scattered throughout my month. While my current PC is hardly obsolete, and with enough disposable income to finance this fun new toy, I was curious enough to post for some realworld opinions.

Is this sucker worth it? Will it stay afloat with the latest games? Is it everything I've ever dreamed of in a laptop? Does it do washing and cook nachos?

    Please tell all! Cheers!

P.S. Loving this site. So glad I stumbled across it. Has been immensely helpful!!

You won't be disappointed. I have the M50VM-B2 and it's absolutely amazing. I had the G1S prior to this (the gaming series before the G50) and it was a sickening disappointment. Never had a functioning unit gaming wise so they finally after failed attempts to repair gave me the B2.

Unfortunately, it won't cook nachos. The G1S will though, it goes above 100C.. I'm so sad to say this laptop's GPU won't even go beyond 65C, it's a crying shame.

As for the M50VM vs the G50 you're looking at approx. 4 main differences. First, it has a orange color design when you open the laptop up (and in my opinion it's hidious). Secondly, it has two hard drives rather then 1 (my B2 has one fast 500GB HDD). Third, the gpu is faster and better. Four, it has a small mini-screen on the front bezel which is OLED and will display information... Useless unless you're in a video game.. I had it in the G1S and I always turned it off.

Of course, you also sacrifice battery life and the sucker is heavier lol.

It'll keep up with the games, just don't expect to play everything with maxed out settings, especially Crysis. But you won't be disappointed.

And, question guys. Do all models of M50VM include fingerprint scanners? Cos my retailer gave me specs on their A1 and B1, its exactly the same thing, but doesnt say fingerprint scanner.

    What do you guys think?

I'm trying to decide between the A1 and the B1. It looks like most people here are getting the B1. I'm not sure which one to choose. Is the cpu in the A1 "good"?

I have the B1, and I think it is blazing fast, faster then my desktop, which is 8 years old :p . Anyways, the difference is the p8400 vs the t9400...p8400 is plenty good and it uses a bit less battery but lacks some processing speed and cache. But these things only show big differences in benchmarking...anyways both are good!

Ya i agree. The CPU from p8400 - t9400 was no biggie for me when I purchased the A1, I love the A1! lol And for a couple $100 more for the B1, I didn't think it was worth it and instead would have saved a couple $100 more and went for a even higher end notebook but I didnt want to spend much right now. ;)
The A1 has been awesome and handles everything I have been feeding it! lol

How can you access the ExpressGate mini-OS in this machine? Do I have to install it first or how can I boot to the ExpressGate?

Just ordered an A1 :D My friend said it should come around Oct 10 - 11 :D

I hope I dont get problems with it though, but its okay. Just gonna fix them one by one if ever.

Just hopefully, not hardware defects T_T

Id like to thank the people here for helping me choose a laptop, my first one at that. Thanks! :D And hope it comes earlier than expected, etc.

Anyone have a solution? It looks like only the Realtek HD mic port shows up, but not the built in mic. Please help.

    Thanks.

    Hey guys,

I just got a B1 for work yesterday. The keyboard feels great, screen is beautiful and build is excellent! I'm very happy with this thing.

I tried HDMI with our LG 50" LCD tv at home. Looks fantastic!

Windows logon is a breeze with fingerprint scanner but I still haven't figured out how to use the scanner with email/ facebook logon. Can anyone help?

Also any tips or tweaks would be great!

    thanks in advance
