hey guys i have been bothered by the stutter of my hdd. been reading around the net and appears i am not the only one ofcourse.
intel has a driver and i dont recall if this is a standard drive rin my laptop before

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology seems to clear the stutter in my hdd i tried some test which showed the stutter is less.
    here is the link.
is this driver different then the one standard installed??

hmm ok i write this few minutes after my excitement the stutter is back but still i think it is less i wonder why my hdd slows down suddenly.

    Hey guys!
I just ordered the G73JW-3DE model from digitalcentre.com!
Can't wait to try playing with this notebook! :D

Can I upgrade the RAM memory to 16gb? Because most review I read about the 3DE model says that it can only go up to 8gb? but some says it can go up to 16gb? So which is it? Thanks!

According to most of the info posted, it can take 16GB in total (I remember reading this from official Asus site as well).

However, the user manual didn't mention the max RAM. It only provides info on how to change RAMs or upgrade RAM

I received my unit yesterday. :) Just thought I would share my initial impressions, even though many of you already did. To give you perspective, I am purchasing this as a replacement for my G51VX-A1.

I am very impressed by the quality and sturdiness of the design.

I had read mixed reviews over the sound quality. As soon as you boot up, a corporative movie kicks in and the sound is very LOUD  and did not "sound" distorted to my ear.

    The screen is awesome.

The keyboard did show a little bit of flex, but had I not read about it, I would'nt even have noticed it. As for the ease of typing, coming from my G51VX, the chiclet layout must be very similar as I am able type very fast very easily without mistakes.

Be warned, the 5 recovery disks take about 3hrs to burn, with over 1 hr just for the first one. The following ones are quicker.

So far, I upgraded to NVIDIA verde drivers + 3dvision drivers, flushed some bloatware, updated Roxio cineplayer (important update pops up automatically upon first lauch of the application).

    Now for the questions...

As many other users noted, cineplayer is choppy when displaying the 3d demo video file. Although the 3D effect is fine, for some reason it just stutters continuously. I am wondering if the app is responsible for this. I read some folks purchased POWERDVD 10. Does it read 3D movies and 3D blu-ray, and if so, does it solve the stuttering issue?

I have not been able to adjust depth of field with 3D. The shortcuts in NVIDIA control panel are default (CTRL-F3 and CTRL-F4). Have any of you been able to change it, and when (during a movie playback, when a static 3D image is displayed, or must the 3D not be in use when changing this setting). Even using the slider in NVIDIA control panel did not change anything noticeably.

    Thanks!

Did you try to update the firmware of the hdd ... that was the first one on my priority ... make sure it is up to sd24. As for as the the 3d ...I am able to adjust the depth and did tried till 80% ... it did put a lot of strain on my eyes though so reverted back to default.

I tried many times with the corrected string (anqsd24.lod rather than ansqsd24.lod), without success. I get to the c:\path, then type the whole string, to no result. The screen is cleared within .1 second and I get back to the path c:\ without anything changed. I tried it over 5 different reboots, with many attempts in each, without success. I confirmed with crystalHDD that firmware is unchanged in either drive.

I did not find the anqsd24.lod file in the iso image I burned, but rather "an-sd24.something else". Is my image corrupted?

As for 3d, I succeeded at changing depth, and agree with you that it is unbearable at more than default setting.

    Thanks for your help

Not sure .... looks like you are already informed ... still you might want to take a look at following about forcing the firmware-

    http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentus-XT-Momentus-and/Firmware-update-Momentus-XT/m-p/77238

imp point is to look for image which belongs to 500 GB model if your hdd is 500 GB ... (details are in the link though)

    hope it helps.

I had the same problem, found that Seagate updated the ISO, I looked in the dir and they changed the LOD file name. use this command, worked perfectly for me.

    FDL487A -m Anak -f AT01AY.LOD -i ST95005620AS -s -x -b -v -a 20

    it worked! Thank you!

And I found something for those of you experiencing stuttering with the 3D demo movie. Just google 3D vision video player. It's free and works like a charm, no more stuttering in movies.

Hey all. After receiving my 2nd g73jw 3de factory specs, I still have this same very annoying issue. Every single aspect of windows 7 premium on my machine seems very grainy and fuzzy. From web images to flash video. Its got to be an OS issue. Anything that is played in WMP looks terrible. I have all drivers up to date, my settings have been gone through so many times its crazy. I'm stumped on this. I really like this notebook too. This video on youtube for example on my notebook with 1080p selected in fullscreen looks like absolute garbage! YouTube - Call of Duty Black Ops on Asus G73JW/G73JW-3DE 3 settings: AA off, 4X AA and Overclocked This same video on my cellphone or my 6 year old desktop(xp powered) look way better....that cant be right! I bought the new bulletstorm game for it, and it looks spectacular on here. If anyone has anykind of input on this problem.....it would be much appreciated. I just cant believe Microsoft doesn't have a fix for this issue, cuz it seems like alot of people have. I bet some of you guys have this same problem and don't even know about it. Do some googling on it. This is crazy!!!!

You can easily upgrade the Ram.

Mine came with 4 gigs of RAM. Bought another 8 and easily upgradet it to 12. Upgrade it to 14 gigs still should be easy but if you want 16, you have to desmount the whole laptop because one of the slots is at the other side of the mainboard. Unless yours comes already comes with 8 gigs, the internal slot will be occupied with 4, allowing you to easily upgrade to 16 gigs.

Make sure the drives are in IDE mode in BIOS. The update will not work in AHCI mode.

@jelski you can copy the recovery partition with a utility like gparted (or dd if you're comfortable with the command line) to a file called something like recovery.img or straight onto a usb stick/disk. A linux livecd like ubuntu is all that you'd need.

There's a guide here but I'm not sure you need to go through all of this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...recovery-partition-recover-another-drive.html

I just received my 3DE this afternoon and immediatley dove into uninstalling programs. I am very disconcerted by finding two entries for Windows Live Mesh bracketed by several Chinese characters. ASUS manufactures with Chinese labor and parts but I want to make sure that this is supposed to be there. Any thoughts?

EDIT Upon closer inspection, I also see Windows Live Mesh entries bracked by Spanish, French and Italian(?).

FOREVER lens is clean else i couldnt read blu ray or dvd movies just all the game dvd's crysis 1 and 2 badcompany 2 they don't wanna start i can read them with alot of patience but the disc wont start.

BANDITBUZZ. i was wondering the same myself why my hdd get erased while updating a driver. I do have lots of trouble with this pc. I think i really had many parts made on monday morning.
My entire systems lags the whole time maybe it has to do something with the hdd being wiped.
Planning to buy a ssd disc wanna see if i still wil have this troubles after the OS drive has been replaced. Else i suspect something is wrong on my motherboard.

    Hi Jelski,

Sorry to hear your still having a ton of problems with your machine. I have nowhere near the issues you have, but am still having some of my own difficulties.

I have never resolved the jerking issue with the "3D Demo", but had given up as it wasn't impacting my typical use. However, when watching Saw 3D on 3D bluray today I noticed a couple of mins of jerking towards the end of the film (about 1hr 10mins in) which pissed me off. At least up until that point it hadn't specifically got in my way.

I have worked out one thing. Having 3D vision enabled seems to cause stuttering on my machine no matter what. For example, playing Race Driver GRID in 2D I get an almost solid 60fps with vsync enabled (all max, but no AA at 1080p). However, I noticed that when I have 3D vision enabled in the control panel, even when playing in 2D mode, that I would get stutters.

I also recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 9. As you will all know, our machines have 2 versions of Internet Explorer installed. 64bit and 32bit. 32bit is, at least by default, required for flash. I never noticed before (though it may have been the case), but when I have Stereoscopic 3D enabled in the control panel and use Internet Explorer 32-bit it lags, even though I am just on a 2D desktop and not doing anything 3D. Watching Flash video is like watching a slide show, despite everything being 2D. Swtiching off Stereoscopic 3D in the control panel and Internet Explorer goes back to normal with smooth flash video. I don't understand why.

If seems like, regardless of whether I am just in standard 2D or 3D, as long as I have Stereoscopic 3D enabled in the nVidia control panel, things lag on my machine? Anyone got any suggestions? I am on the latest nVidia driver, but I expect this problem existed from the day I bought my machine.

    hey pierre
I have no trouble what so ever with 3d. Playing games is not possible with higher resolution then 720p in 3d. full hd 3d gaming is not possible on our machines.
3d movies no troubles either. Even the demo works fine with me.!?!? did you install last months update nvidia driver?
Also try to move the demo to the other harddrive. That works for most of my problems. installed all my games as well in the other drive and no stutter at all. Also intel has alot of new drivers for our system which arent on the asus website.
    goodluck
As for my blu ray player. asus helpdesk recommended to install windows again. Just did that last week though.

Yeah, I realise 1080p 3D gaming is a massive strain on the system, but its fine for some games. For example GRID at 1080p works at about 35fps for me in 3D vision. Regardless, thats not really my problem. My issue is that when stereoscopic 3D is enabled in the nVidia control panel, I get occassional stutters even when in 2D mode (i.e. pressing the ROG icon button to disable 3D). Without it enabled, no stutters.

Same with IE9. Browsing the internet in 2D is smooth. Browsing the internet in 2D, but with stereoscopic 3D enabled in the nVidia control panel results in a stuttering mess despite it being 2D.

I installed last month's nVidia driver and it makes no real difference. 3D bluray does seem to work. I mean, 1min of stuttering in a 1.5hour film doesn't really suggest a big problem. It just made me think about my frustrations again.

Tried the demo on the 2nd harddrive, but it made no difference. Tested harddrive speeds and they are fine so shouldn't be a streaming issue.

I think it must be down to my nVidia drivers. I guess there are 2 parts. The card drivers and the 3D sensor drivers. Any idea how I can uninstall these and reinstall the latest? What is the driver for the inbuilt 3D sensor?

    NVIDIA DRIVERS 267.76 WHQL

this is the driver i have i think the emitter driver is there as well.
Else you can download this seperately. my emitter stopped working after installation but that can also be my system. after removing the driver and search automatically for the right driver in windows it worked fine again.

didnt try 3d browsing didnt know this was possible.

crysis2 in 3d is really super but only in 720p.

This has been driving me nuts as of late. I have the G53JW-3DE (which is as you know similar) and the EXACT same symptom of stuttering/lag/whatever you want to call it especially with Internet Explorer 9 is extremely evident. I even went as far as to format on a clean install of Windows 7 Professional (MSDN) and slowly installed drivers then testing and rebooting to find the source of the problem. It was immediately apparent after the install of the latest NVIDIA 3D Drivers (I used 276.76).

Also, for those who don't know, if you want the latest NVIDIA drivers WITH the emitter drivers, goto the NVIDIA website and select instead of your video card, choose "3D Vision" for the product type and product series, then for the product I chose "Full driver CD for Notebook PCs" and choose the appropriate OS (Windows 7 64 bit).

Hopefully someone is able to find a solution to this 2D stuttering/lag/whatever issue when 3D is enabled. It drives me crazy especially since these laptops are such power houses!

found out some interesting stuff. and i wonder who else has had this or not.
As we all know the internet browser companies have released new versions.
And with my system i had severe lag immediately. (what else was new with my system) But was googling this problem and found out many ppl have this and is simply fixed by turning off the gpu rendering.
now browsing is smooth as it should be even typing in FF4 is going without stutter/lag.

I still have some lag in my system and i wonder if this is caused by the video card as well. i wonder if the office package is affected by this gpu rendering. if so how can i turn this off.
as far as i know i need my video card resources for gaming only.
Will do some more experimenting with the rendering stuff.

I got an ASUS G73JW-3DE couple of months back and have been very happy with it even with the pre-installed crapware. But one little thing has been worrying me for the past few days.On extensive gaming like Dirt 2 on mall maxed out settings for a couple hours the GPU temperatures hit a maximum of 93 degree celcius according HWMonitor.CPU temps reached a max of 70-72.
IS it okay or something to worry about..?
Also is the brighter 120Hz screen responsible for producing more heat ..?

Thanks For the Help :) ...

Have posted this on the G73JW Thread as well. Will keep you posted here as well..

Hi there...i hav been been playing NFS hot Pursuit and Dirt 2 on 1080p on 3D without any problems.NFS is smooth,Dirt 2 doesnt lag but the shadows and outlines are not positioned correctly and it sometimes a frame skip maybe there..but thats rare.Though i would like to mention that i havent played Dirt 2 on 3D at long stretches due the incorrect postioning of objects and it puts a lot of strain on the eyes.In 2D though Dirt looks absolutely gorgeous. The 1080p 120Hz screen is the best i have seen so far :)

@souravsunny 93C isn't anything to worry about. If you get over 100C then you may want to clean your fans or think about redoing your thermal paste.

P.S. please do not crosspost - it makes the forum a mess. ;)

hey thanks man...just was a tad worried about that..

Sorry about the crosspost.New to this forum.getting used to it. :)

By the way the new NVIDIA drivers have been released version 270.61

    here is the link
    NVIDIA DRIVERS 270.61 WHQL

    Downloaded and installed 270.61.

Pros : Increased contrast and Vibrant colours.Improves performance by 2-3 fps(not very sure-needs more research).decreased GPU temps by 3-5 deg C (dunno how)

Cons : completely breaks the IR emitter in my system.enabling 3D makes it look it an anaglyph pic.the IR emitter doesnt show the light and the glasses dont work and hence no stereoscopic 3D.going back to 267.76 for now. :( :(

try to uninstall the 3d emitter driver. then install again the 3d emitter drivers manually (located in the nvidia folder)
that worked for me before. also you need to set up again the 3d stereoscopic in the nvidia controlpanel.

seagate momentus xt new firmware is out now sd25. updating with the seagate firmware updating utility went with SUCCES in one time.

THanks for the help Jelski.I did a clean install of the drivers. That fixed the Problem. Now they are running great and i m loving the improvement that comes with it specially the colours.

Also i would like to confirm the marginal increase in Frame rates

Dirt 2 - all maxed out - 1-2 fps increase
Mafia 2 - all maxed with physx disabled - 4-5 fps increase

Glad its worked out for you, but I am seeing very different results. I don't have Dirt 2, but I do have Mafia 2. After reading your posts I downloaded the latest nVidia driver and updated (from 267.?? can't remember the last digits) to the 270.?? version.

Mafia 2 settings: 1080p, no physix, no aa, aniostropic filter at 2x

    267 drivers on Mafia 2 benchmark = 37 - 38 FPS average
    270 drivers on Mafia 2 benchmark = 34 FPS

Minor variations of course, but I think I might revert back to my older drivers.

Just to update I went back and did some further testing using the Mafia 2 benchmark. As before, 1080p, no physx, no aa, asf 2x and all other settings on max.

Testing with 270 drivers - 34.0 FPS average

Reverted back to 267 drivers and reran the test - 38.4FPS average

The average doesn't tell the whole story either. The lows are about the same on both drivers though slightly less dramatic on 267, however at the higher end some scenes were about 48 on 267, but nearer 38 on 270.

I am sticking with 267 for now and will wait until the next release before upgrading again.

Really sorry to hear you still having such grief with your machine. It really does sound like a nightmare. For all its quirks I am pretty happy with my machine. Having imported to the UK, I have ended up with a hell of a lot of laptop for my money and it has impressed some friends. Hopefully you get yours sorted. It definitely sounds like its needs to be RMA'd

    Hey guys,

First of all I have to thank you to have created such a great forum. Very helpful!

Unfortunately I had nothing but trouble with my G73JW-3DE since I had bought it last December.

First I had trouble installing my old Canon printer. Got a new one. Same problem ("printer not responding" - no matter if it was connected via USB or WLAN). Nobody seemed to be able to help me - neither the ASUS nor the Canon support. I finally got it working with a new cable...even though it stopped working again yesterday for no reasons as I hadn't changed anything. The model is the Canon MG5220. Has anybody experienced similar problems?

More importantly though I have trouble installing new NVIDIA drivers. Tried the 267xxx and the new 270xxx ones. Every time I install them over the old preinstalled ones (260xxx I believe? No clean install) the 3D completely stops working and I will only get a purple colored set up wizard in which I am not able to set up the 3D. Only way to get it working is to uninstall the 3D controller driver and reinstall it. This doesn't solve the problem though...

...that every time I run Firefox 4 the 3D Vision mode is automatically enabled (even though I set it to not start with any program in the control panel) with no green light (no light at all) and Firefox completely lags. Only thing I can do is to disable it with the ROG button or disable the hardware acceleration in the Firefox options.

The same thing (Firefox 4) happens when I do a clean install even though I am able to get the 3D running right away.

I have the following (preinstalled) NVIDIA drivers and software on my computer:

NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player 1.6.4
    NVIDIA Display Control panel 6.14.12.6114
    NVIDIA Drivers 1.10.62.40
    NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D driver 7.17.12.6114

Since I am not an expert when it comes to installing new drivers it would be great if somebody could provide me with a step by step tutorial about what exactly I have to uninstall and to install (which drivers?) to get it working. I feel stupid about asking this but I have already spent a lot of time trying and researching online so I am getting quite desperate. BTW I downloaded the complete 3D Vision Notebook CD 267xxx and the new 270xxx where all drivers should be included, right? Or do I need anything else?

Last thing is that my laptop doesn't switch to High Performance when it runs on battery even though I enabled this in the power settings. Very strange. I tried to update the BIOS but this also didn't help. This means that I can never play any games on battery mode because they all lag.

So...overall I am quite annoyed at having spent 2200 $ (including a SSD) on a brand new high end machine and having to deal with these stupid problems.

I hope you can help me figuring this out. Thanks so much in advance.

    Hi Nestor,

Obviously a few things to address in your post so here goes.

    1) The Canon printer. To be honest, I cannot really help you here. I have never actually tried to setup a printer on my laptop yet. Have a Brother printer/scanner at home, but not needed it so far. Sorry.

    2) The drivers. This I do have some experience with. First of all, excluding the drivers that came with the laptop, nVidia releases up unitl 270 did not include the 3D Vision IR emmiter drivers. 270 changes this and is now a full package. When I first tried to upgrade to 270, depsite selecting "clean install" in the custom menu, my 3D Vision was broken. To fix, I used Add/Remove programs in Control Panels and uninstalled everything nVidia. After a couple of reboots I installed 270 from scratch, using express settings, and everything worked fine including 3D vision. However, framerates were slower than 267 as per my other posts.

When going back to 267 I uninstalled everything through the Control Panel again and installed the 267 drivers. However, this broke 3D vision as the 267 pack does not included the emmitter drivers. I tried installing the standalone IR drivers from nVidia's website, but this just gave me the coloured anaglyph 3D style. To fix, I uninstalled everything, installed the original drivers the came with the laptop, then installed 267 over that. Now everything, including 3D vision works fine.

    3) Laggy Browser. I don't use Firefox, but I had the same problem with IE9 (only the 32bit version though, 64bit is fine). I have since found that using the ROG button to disable 3D once seems to keep that setting indefinitely. Now, bu default, 3D vision is disabled when I load the browser and I don't get lag. I might be wrong, but I think its an issue with Flash, which would explain why it lags on Firefox as well.

    4) High Performance on battery. Well, my laptop lets me select High Performance whilst on battery. No real issues. However, I do notice that game performance is impacted when on battery. I assume that there just simply isn't as much power, regardless of settings, when on battery. Playing COD MW2 for example, is fine at 1080p normally, but when on the train recently I was playing it, but dropped to 720p to minimise lag when on battery. Works fine. Don't think you have anything to worry about here.
