Playing at 1920x1080 isnt as easy even in old WOW, specially in 25man raids, even my desktop i7+gtx285 sometimes dips in the 30s while heavy action on an encounter, but games like wow shouldn't be a problem since aren't as demanding as fps to have a good experience in the frame rate, i think its should be fine.

Ack you guys are both right, that feature to change the Fn key isn't on the ASUS G73. Sorry, I've been through a few laptops over the last month until I found the right one. I must have changed it on one of the others ones :(

CPU-Z will report the core speed based on the highest available multiplier when the power plan is set to High Performance. Drop back to Balanced, and the core speed will drop to 1.20 (9x) pursuant to Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology to reduce CPU power use during idle states.

gtx480m cost almost to 900 usd give or take, not to mention you need to upgrade the psu. the card itself require almost 100w.

also custom heatsink needed, since the original 5870m heatsink is smaller.

Thanks Revelator that did the trick. I was messing around with the power options when I first got it and did choose high performance mode. Balanced mode actually drops the multiplier to 7X giving me 931mhz. I thought when I first checked the clock speeds were lower.

What do you use for power options? Is it best to leave it at high performance when gaming or running benches? Thanks

Also 1YR Global warranty/1YR Accidental Damage Warranty, so its like most Asus X models where you only get 1 year warranty. Im going guess no mouse nor bag also.

Yea..actually! Asus voids the accidental damage too when imported in India, so its just 1 year normal warranty.. :( I wish though it comes wid a bag at least. This beast needs a bloody big hangar to slide in which ain't available at most places.

Wonder why this ain't available at Gentechpc..:/

Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect among other online retailers sometimes have exclusive models, that are not sold elsewhere, for example the G51JX-X3 or the G73JH-X3.

I will do a clean install of Windows 7 once I receive my laptop.
Will Windows detect all the devices, or will I have to browse on the web to find missing drivers?

From my past experience (not especially with Asus), this is pain in the ***, to find out the proper drivers.

Use this. It's an excellent guide: Win7 Clean Install Walkthrough

The supplied Driver Disc (comes with laptop) is all you need to get all drivers loaded after Win7 install. You can pick and choose what bloatware you want to re-install as well. I just did this yesterday and it was 100% pain free.

I trust you have your machine back? What was the turnaround for the repair? I don't have any experience with RMA. I love the lappy and in most cases the bright dot would not be an issue. Watching movies is another story, very distracting!

Sometimes if the pixels are stuck you can massage them with your finger to get them unstuck or try one of the programs...

WorldwoWires RMA times can vary alot based on if they have the part in stock etc... So it could take a week or a month ..

I have seen people on the forums without there machines up to 2 months but those are rarities and not the norm..

I have tried them before and i never had any luck but others i know have and also had success massaging the pixel with there finger...

Theres a few programs out there and they all do the same thing essentially so just google stuck pixel fix and you should find a couple you can try...

    Good luck..

Regarding bright dots, I spoke with a CSR at ASUS today and he told me to call the supplier (in this case GenTech) to determine if they would take the G73JW back and if not to call about RMA. Is this the proper protocol? I have zero experience with RMA and am looking for advice. Many thanks.

"Massaging" a dead pixel seems a bit risky. What are the chances of making things worse?

For the short time I was using the machine, it rocks! The keyboard what a bit different being my first chicklet. Only took about an hour to get used to it.
The screen is definitely bright with good adjustability.

Definitely cool and quiet. Love that. Played some retro games for a while with ease on this baby. Was barely warm. It really is a work of art. Excellent design in my opinion.

The drive configuration is a bit wonky for me. I like OS on one and Data on the other. Important items are backed up to two different external drives.

I did create a full recovery set while watching college football. At least something was accomplished.

I've been wondering about the laptop's life expectancy but what would be the general guidelines in keeping this baby maintained? Is it safe to keep the charger plugged in 24/7 or should I occassionally unplug it so it doesn't kill itself by staying in high temperatures? I'm using a G110 and G9x so I think my laptop's keyboard and touchpad will be untouched for the next few years that I use this so that covers that part.

None.. You can also just try tapping on it ..

When i say massage the pixel im not talking about busting out the Baby oil here :D Just put your index finger on the dot and push in a little and you can put something on your finger like a piece of tissue etc...

All the suggestions i have given thus far have never worked for me but have worked for many people i have seen across the Web..

If you are going to be using the machine 24/7 plugged in and are concerned about wearing out the battery you can just remove the battery ... Run the battery down to about 40-50% and store it in a cool dry place...

I have been getting different numbers from different sites. I need to know so I can find a laptop bag that will fit it :)

It comes with a pretty decent bag, that fits it well. I use it to carry around my laptop, adapter, and a couple school books and note books everyday. I also own a Swiss Gear Wegner that is sort of fits into. By sort of I mean I can't use the built in laptop sleave (just put notebook in largest pocket), and I can't fit any books in it when the laptop and power supply are in it.

A 3d version "Should" be available sometime in November ish ..

Whether its any good as far as the screen is concerned is another matter altogether...

Also keep in mind the 460m is no where near powerful enough to play games in 3d at 1080p...

So if your waiting to play games in 3d at 1080p you may want to look elsewhere like a Desktop 480GTX because the current gen stuff save for the X7200 from Clevo with dual 480m's is about the only thing thats going to do a decent job of it..

Keep in mind, 3D actually has significant loss of detail also. And also keep in mind, it's not actually 3D. We do not have the technology to actually have 3D in movies in our living room or 3D for gaming. The only tech I've seen with 3D is about the size of a small house.
    - 3D Vision is the definition of gimmick and in many ways, false advertising.

It never hurts to contact your reseller, as they can always provide the best advice in resolving your issues.

I suspect Asus suggested contacting GenTech, due to the newness of your purchase. Many of the resellers offer a time-limited return or replacement period on newly purchased machines. In this case, simply get with Ken regarding his policy, and advice.

Unless your notebook is newly purchased, or the notebook is equipped with customized upgrades (items NOT covered in the Mfg. warranty), most all repairs should be directed to Asus for RMA. Customizable upgrades not Mfg. warranteed, are normally covered by the installing reseller, and NOT Asus.

Keep in mind also, Asus offers exclusive one-day round trip shipping, and a 5-day turn-around time, IF repair parts are readily available. This is one of the most customer friendly and painless RMA policys in the industry. Resellers on the otherhand, may not cover any of the shipping cost. Again, check with your reseller regarding their policies.

Some seem able to dismiss a bad pixel or two, but myself personally, if not taken care of, it will drive me NUTZ till the end of time. Asus offers a 30-day policy regarding bad pixels, and I would recommend you act on this quickly.

    I hope this helps.......

    :)

As always this forum is very very helpful. I spoke with Ken this morning and with his personal hand he initiated the RMA process for me. He's the greatest!

The information I got from the ASUS rep conflicted with what Ken told me (i.e. what to return partial contents, original packaging etc.) I know policies change but... Just give me the lowdown straight up!

Anyway, hope to be able to send out today.

I would have obsessed myself into oblivion over that single bright dot!
With what little time we've had together (G73JW), I love this thing! Nice bright screen, quiet, excellent design.

Looking to get back to work. My current ASUS W2W works just fine for now but not quite the same. Give me the power!

Well, I'm quite happy with my G73-JW so far. Just one issue- the web cam. It is very sluggish and slow. Anyone else experience poor web cam performance? I'm using it with Skype.

My machine has a fresh Win7 (64bit) install. I noticed the bad performance even before I wiped the drive and did the fresh install.

I have a question regarding updates and such. I accidentally let windows updates run and now im experiencing high latency (lag) in World of warcraft. I'm not sure if windows is causing this problem or if its my internet?

You might want to take a look here. They allow you to search for a bag based on a laptop model. Not a huge selection but something to explore.

I just bit the bullet and ordered the G73JW! It will be here tomorrow. I am extremely excited and nervous at the same time. Hoping I don't have any issues... Look forward to visiting this thread frequently. Tons of great info! Keep it up, just thought I'd say hello.
