Thanks for the help Quad. By the way, I just did a clean install but how do I go about getting rid of the two partitions that I have on my second HDD? I want them combined so I can have the SSD as C and the second HDD as D.

I was still typing all that WorldwoWires when you must have posted yours lol... Both will do .. -
Hey Quad, could you confirm if you also have a sluggish webcam?
I cannot find a way to fix it, the drivers listed on asus's website arent even for the camera that is on the g73jw -
To be honest i have never used a webcam in my whole life so i am the wrong person to ask and i can bet they are all identical ...
Wish i had a better answer but i would say if a Webcam is that important you may want to grab a cheap USB one because i can bet you Asus will never update that software.. That software and drivers are usually a one shot deal for the life of the system sadly... -
My son uses his on the G50VT. He says it's not the best but for the occasional SkyPe he said it's fine.
Drives for his model were not on the website but he downloaded them elsewhere.
Cheers, -
All i know is the Bestbuy model has 1.3MP webcam on there version and ours is 2.0MP like the JH .. Beyond that i have 0 clue about the cameras or what you can do to make them better...
Actually you may want to post this question in the gaming section of the Asus forums because there are a TON of JH owners and they should have the same camera... -
With this set up, on high settings overall, it looks great and runs rather smoothly. FFXIV looks AWESOME. I am really impressed by the graphics and am happy with the looks on the Asus G73JW-A1. I figure alot of the problems with the stuttering and such in the heavy trafficked city areas is due to server lag actually, which is prevalent on all servers. This should get better overtime. I really think things run great at this level. I know that the GPU and probably CPU can be pushed further.
I give it the thumbs up I am happy. Even though its big, it truly can be moved much easier than a desktop and they give you a nice gaming mouse and backpack to boot.
Hope this helps! -
ok thanks a lot m34iyg, i'm sooooooooo relieved right now
can't wait for it to come -
I'll let you guys know about how my experience goes. In all honesty, I haven't sent in my laptop yet because I wanted to play FFXIV. I bought the laptop to play FFXIV during the early release so darn it I am going to play this week LOL. -
Alright, the partition problem is solved. Thanks World and Quad.

add me to the list of G73JW owners! it gets delivered today, but i am being interrupted by my girlfriend's bday tonight so i won't be able to play until tomorrow haha
-
You can go ahead and add me to the owners list. I'm not able to order til Oct 6th, but my mind is made up. I just spoke to Hutsady K at Xoticpc.com, and the information they provided made up my mind. Here is a synopsis of the conversation. For those that are hung up between ordering the jh-b1 model and the jw-a1 model, hopefully this will clear some things up:
Nvidia's drivers are going to supposedly increase clock speeds of the 460m in the next release, as well as increase overall performance of the card in general. This should actually improve the performance to levels BETTER than the 5870m gpu in the jh models.
Nvidia supports Physx, (of course) which more games are relying on to amp up the eye candy in games. The newer 460m also slightly outperforms the 5870 in dx11 applications as well, although currently dx11 on any laptop is shall we say....wonky at best. (correct me if I am wrong)
the cooling issues of the jh models have been fixed and THEN SOME. The temps of the 460m under heavy load are substantially cooler than the 5870. This allows greater headroom for overclocking the gpu and cpu to gain better performance overall.
Some other things that give the jw model an edge are the usb 3.0 port, the HDMI 1.4 (Why they nixed the wirless HD streaming is beyond me but I digress), the jw also comes stock with the 1333 ddr memory vs the 1066 that they apparently switched to in the stock jh models. I kno that the difference between the two is negligible, but it is still faster, and for the same price really.
I'm not going to start a flame war between ATI and Nvidia's driver issues compared to each other, but ATI's foray into all things 5870 related have obviously been a headache for many that have had the gsod and other driver related issues spring forth. Nvidia does not seem to be having these problems, as I have YET to find any problems reported with the jw's performance.
For those that are looking at the older a1 models of the jh flavor, the b1 has an upgraded cpu (740qm vs the 720qm in a1) and this is obviously an improvement, with very little added cost in the long run.
I have spoken with people from many places with experience with both the jh and jw models, and from what I have learned, unless you are extensively benchmarking, you are NOT going to notice a difference in performance between the jh b1 and the jw, unless you are running physx or dx11, in which the jw 460m will actually do BETTER (Physx is only Nvidia, so this point is moot I guess.)
Right now at Xoticpc, the prices between the jh-b1 and the jw-a1 are the same. (about 1690 US) So price is not a factor to choose from here.
I hope this has been helpful, and if anyone can think of any more info I should post on this, please feel free to comment, or post your own info, as I am always ready to learn more. -

It's always great to see a notebook model become a 'winner', and the excitement of those awaiting their new toys. Soon I hope to join your ranks, and this will happen one way, or another...... just waiting to see how the G73JW-3D refresh is going to play out.
Anyhow, ENJOY midlip!

I aswell made up my mind regarding the JW, that will be my next laptop, although im not sure when i can place my order yet. I'm still waiting to get some news about the arrival of this version in Europe, since i wanted to buy it from my reseller (i will go meet them tomorrow and ask for info).
Thanks Nocturnalis for that summary, always good to hear (read in this case), and i'm sure it will help decide whoever didn't decided yet.
Congratulations to all recent owners, i hope to be soon one of the next owners of this magnific machine. -
waiting on my g73jw from gentechpc (awesome experience - highly recommended). i am relatively new to gaming world. I use to play counter strike quite abit in undergrad (ages ago) but was alil peeved back then bcuz peops cheating w/ hacks, etc. I tend to like games similar to counter strike. Any recommendations of new games that are similar for my new g73jw? is counter strike still recommended?

If you have not already, pick up the "Orange Box" from a store on on Steam itself. You will not be disappointed. -
I’m also decided to buy this laptop.
However, I’m waiting for it to be available with a french-canadian bilingual keyboard / french Win7.
I’ve been looking quite extensively for an ETA but, alas, I can’t find any date.
I don’t recall how much time it took for the “A1-CBIL” to be made available after the initial G73JH-A1 got released…
I suppose I’ll have to patently wait, envying you guys. ;^) -

I will buy the fr-ca keyboard and will do the swap once available. -
We need a new signature bar !
Like this one, but for the JW!

sorry about noobish q, but i will be leaving xp to win7 when i receive my g73jw tom. on counter strike source requirements it mentions xp and vista, will it run on win 7 normally or will i have to do something like compatibility mode, etc? also, if i need compatibility mode is there a work around bcuz website says not to use this mode. thanks in advance.

it works fine on 7

Just pulled the trigger and ordered a g73jw with 128G SSD and 6200 network card. It should be an improvement over my 4-yr old Sager. Now for the agonizing wait ...

anyone know which company makes the JW screen? LG, AUO, Hannstar?

Where do you buy the keyboard from? Directly from ASUS?
What are the steps?
(Ever tried upgrading Win7 downloading the language pack? Does the paths changes - aka: "My documents" instead of "Mes documents"?) -
Let me know once you receive it if you have a FR-CA keyboard.
*Updated - I went on the site and they are advertising the G73"JH" as bilingual - the G73JW is not even listed! If it is, I can't find it. I suppose I'll ring them later on. I'm a few minutes from there... -
I made a Sig bar, not Quite as flashy, but my college professor caught me when I was supposed to be doing class work so....

hi,
will all computer games designated for xp/vista or just 2000/xp work on win 7 as is? or will you have to change something to work? i ask bcuz j&r and is having a pretty good sale on older pc games for $4 such as assasin creed, medal of honor, etc.
thanks. -
assassin creed works, the very first medal of honor may not
-
Just added the Logo to main page.
Great Work -
Are the speakers loud enough in Asus G73-JW? enough to watch a movie or fill up a little room with sound?
thx -
Hi All....
Received my new G73jw yesterday - Wow! Did a whack of research before purchase - several times ended up on these forums, which yielded great answers to my many questions. My only regret is the lack of immediate supply on the G53jw in Canada (and the US).
Couple of questions... I was wanting to to a "clean install" of Windows 7, and then intend to upgrade to Professional or Ultimate from there. I had intended to delete the partition, including recovery portion of the HDD, as well as all the bloatware that came with my unit - great bloatware explanation on this site BTW.
Only trouble is, I've found out the hard way that you can't get a replacement disk from Microsoft on OEM bundled OS and apparently you can't get one from Asus either...
Is there any reason I wouldn't want to delete the recovery partition, and, is there any way to get/make or what have you, a copy of the OS for a fresh install?
I'd really appreciate some help on this!
Thanks! -

Hi,
received my jw today - woah!
im creating my recovery disks as i'm typing this.
all seems fine so far......
but i noticed my left button(outward part towards blueray) on trackpad is slightly lower and slightly slopes upward towards middle where L/R buttons on trackpad meet. The R button is even thru out, but L button is slightly off visually. The L button especially towards outward part makes very slight noise when i press. It seems fine, but something just seems off when compared to R button.
when i glide my finger from blue ray side to middle of trackpad 2 buttons, i feel L button (outward part) is slightly depressed as opposed to gliding finger from powercord side to trackpad 2 buttons of R button.
Is this normal? or is spring mechanism or whatever alil off? should i exchange or let be?
or is this the same for all my fellow jw owners???? -
I did see that forum, and read through it... one thing Kalim says is that even if you choose to install to entire HDD, it does not delete the hidden partition containing the factory install. That was part of my question in the original post - is there not a way to reclaim the entire hard drive(s), AND is there any reason a person might not want to delete that partition? Is it even possible to delete that partition?
Eventually I will want to upgrade to SSD, so I want to be sure I have an actual disk containing a copy of the Windows 7 OS (and in this case the hidden partition should be gone I hope!). I am not sure I understand this concept of downloading "images" of an OS, nor did I really understand the instructions contained in Kalim's link: http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/428068-legal-windows-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
Can I not get a recovery disk somewhere? Apparently not from Asus! GRRRRR. I thought someone else on here mentioned he/she managed to get one from somebody named "Ken"... Or am I missing something simple here?
Any help for this newbie appreciated! -
Further to that... I see you can make recovery disks (x5 or6!) via Asus AI - is this the same as a single recovery disk, were one available from ASUS? ie do they contain a full copy of the OS, by which I could then follow Kalim's instructions for a clean Windows 7 install with disk? Or is this some bloated recovery method that will preclude me from eliminating all the extraneous stuff I am trying to rid from my machine? My other questions still apply...
Thanks! -

I live in Sacramento so the package only traveled a short distance to the local repair facility in Fremont CA (SF bay area). The RMA process was very easy through my reseller Powernotebooks.com. I am glad you went through your reseller as well, it seems they have more pull than we may as the end user and can get things done in your favor quickly. It is also in their interest to keep you happy as it somewhat reflects on them in terms of customer service. So far I am happy with Powernotebooks.com.
I did, however, get better service with Asus directly than you seem to have experienced. I was told that they too were willing to start the RMA process for me. However, I am glad I let Powernotebooks.com do it for me. They will be following the fix along with me as per their last email. We shall see.
Hope you and I both have a quick good experience so we can enjoy our laptops soon!
