Yeah there is not a ton of benefit from using a cooler on this particular machine since the only vent on the bottom is near the RAM which is placed in an area thats abit odd for a cooler.

You can prop up the back of the machine though and shave off a few degrees just from that alone...

There was a tip I read somewhere using a set of common rubber door stops to prop up the notebook. Not sure how I feel about that but definitely a very cheap alternative!

Yes you can use doorstops or bottle caps or anything your comfortable with ..

Its really not needed but if you want the best temps then propping it up a tad will help as will a cooler to a degree because it will be blowing cool air at the bottom of the machine .. Stock the machine does sit very close to the table..

Has anyone played World of Warcraft with their G73JW? What kind of experience are you getting in terms of FPS, and the 460m?

    Hi, all

Does anyone know what is the average FPS + TEMPS you would get when playing a game like Crysis or metro 2033 when this notebook GPU is over clocked

I have seen the video on youtube of the G73JW playing Crysis and the FPS seemed lower than the G73JH also not as smooth. (bit disappointed)

CAN THE G73JW MATCH THE G73JH WHEN OVER CLOCKED

    THANKS

Just ordered from Amazon with overnight shipping. I can't wait for it to get here tomorrow. I was just wondering if GSOD and Steam errors from the JH will be fixed straight out of the box with the JW or is there a firmware update I need to fix it?

Dunno if weight of numbers helps much, but 'me too'. :) Steam is fine, houdini/photoshop/after effects all good, been using it for work past 2 days, been rock solid.

Frankly I'd be worried if I bought a new laptop and it BSOD's outta the box! Yes yes, gaming laptop, cutting edge, thats the nature of pc gaming, but still, you JH owners sound like you had a rough ride!

Does the GPU fan for new ASUS G73JW which comes with NVIDIA GTX 460 go loud? and you guys how do you compare the new G73JW for its own GPU Fan to the previous G73-JH GPU fan that hooks up ATI Radeon HD 5870!!

To make the satatement load and clear.. what is the most silent GPU fan so far for Asus G-Series. is it GTX 460 or ATI Radeon HD 5870

    thank you in advance

    Hi all
new to the forum and am seriously thinking about buying the g73jw. honestly first major laptop purchase. current laptop is going on 6 year toshiba budget laptop. i feel now is time to get a real one. I had a hp dv7 for 3 days, but several things about it, just didn't like so returned it. I was thinking about envy 17, but i guess w/ not liking dv7, i doubt will like envy more at least enuff to keep. anyway, i'm leaning more towards jw due to better cooling properties compared to its ati jh-b1 brother.

-is getting diamond paste necessary even though jw cools better on its own?
-has any one figured out why jw cools better, bcuz i thought 460 requires more power? if this is true how, can it be cooler than 5680? is the cooling fan system of jw different than jh-b1?
-how much more of an advantage is upgrading wireless card vs stock wireless card? what are advantages?
-lastly, anyone had any complaints w/ free shipping courier? who is the free shipping courier?
    -any other suggestions?

if questions have been answered already, i apologize in advance.
    thanks.

    1. I didn't get it and I haven't had any troubles with overheating. Not needed, but sometimes piece of mind is worth the price I suppose.

    2. Not a clue, don't know what the power requirements are for the 460m, but as long as it works, I'm satisfied.

    3. Stock wifi will work fine. The difference between the two cards isn't game changing huge, but it is noticeable. Where my friend usually gets 'good' signal strength with his stock, I can usually still get 'excellent' strength. If you have the extra $35 to spare, I say go for it, but you won't be screwing yourself if you get stock.

    4. Can't really answer very well, I used UPS two day shipping. I could be wrong but I think the free shipping is still via UPS.

    5. Upgrade your nVidia drivers to beta as soon as you get the machine, they are stable and really do boost performance. Other than that, enjoy your new notebook! :D

Amazon can do overnight shipping for $3 or 2 day shipping for free if you have prime. You can get prime for free for a year if you have a student email. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. Over course you lose the option of customizing if you go that route, but I'm impatient lol.

The fans are the same as they were in the JH which are very quiet even under load compared to almost any notebook out there..

So whether you buy the ATI model or the Nvidia one the noise levels will be pretty much identical..

Yay for being an owner of this sweet laptop. I am using my 32" Panasonic 1080p HDTV as a monitor as the HDMI really makes it look good. As for carrying this around on a daily basis, as a UCLA student who has to constantly deal with upward hills... not a good idea.

As of now, I haven't been able to do much since I am waiting on my recovery discs from Ken to do a clean install. Hopefully, next week I will be able to get going with my laptop. Yeaaaa. As for Furmark, it seems to hover around 73-76 degrees (my laptop is right in front of the open balcony so the cool air gets in). So temperatures will definitely not be a problem.

Thanks for the support for my stuck pixel I posted about a while back. I'm sending it in and yes ASUS really does a good job with no excuses fixing it. NO problems whatsoever getting them to replace the panel. The computer is otherwise great.

One question I had was about GPU performance. It doesn't run FFXIV that well, lots of stuttering and hiccups on the default mode at full HD and even the step down 16:10 mode (?1680 x 1050?). Very playable but the stuttering gives me a headache. I will overclock once I learn how but I heard eric mention something about upgrading to beta drivers. I cant seem to find ones that is for the mobile cards at all. The new 260 series drivers don't support the mobile chips and there seems to be no downloadable drivers at all for the 460M just the 480M. Any thoughts?

Thanks! Sorry for being so green!

The 260 drivers dated Sept. 14th are the ones you want. The 460 isn't in the drop-down box, but the drivers are just fine. You'll definitely want to install them. FFXIV performance will likely improve.

BTW - I just got my G73JW today! And I found this forum! Double bonus!!

Phatal gives a good description of how to get the drivers in the above post. As for overclocking, it is very easy to do with this machine (any machine really):

1: Do a google search for "MSI Afterburner",

2: Download, install and run the program. It will take you right to the screen you use to adjust your settings.

    3. For starters, slide the Core Clock (MHz) bar over to 800 and hit apply. No one on here has had any stability issues with that speed so I figure its a good starting point.

    4. Hit the apply button

    5. Try running FFXIV, its an intense game so it should give you a good idea if your GPU is stable at this speed. Plus you should be able to see a difference in performance.

    6. If game locks up, try sliding the Clock speed down a little bit and repeat step 5, otherwise check "apply at startup" box.

    7. Welcome yourself to the world of overclocking!

Once you're more comfortable, you can play around with the settings a bit to get the best performance your card can handle, but this should get ya started :D

No worries about being green, everyone is at one time or another :)

I ran the benchmark with stock drivers and got around a 1400. With the new 260.63 nvidia drivers my score got boosted to around 1700. With some overclocking I got my score to around 2000. I've been playing FFXIV for the past 2 days and its running pretty smoothly. There is some slowdown during cutscenes at hi res though and fps drops into the low 10s at times. But actual gameplay wise, I'm sitting at a comfortable fps (forgot the exact fps i usually get). Either way its running very smoothly even at full HD.

Anyone noticing some missing keystrokes here and there. I'm not sure if its because I'm new to the whole chiclet keyboard but occasionally, I seem to be missing a key here and there. Its pretty rare but reading all the JH issues on this has got me thinking. I could be hallucinating because I wrote this entire paragraph without a hitch but......
Just curious if anyone else has been running into this problem. (oo just missed an h in has in this sentence...) really not sure if im just missing the key or its the keyboard.

Too bad the problem is still there, I find that slightly worrying! Not a deal breaker, though. Hopefully Gary and the team are coming up with a solution, I know he said they were looking at the issue on the Jh.

Got mine yesterday and i"m knuckles deep in this sucker! :p I really love the look of this machine and the service from Gentechpc was AWESOME...Thanks Ken.

My idle temps for my CPU are between 45 and 50c. Load with prime 95 is the low 70's. Gpu idles low 40's and 20 mins of furmark topped out at 85c. I did get the repaste.

    Vantage scores:
    stock 259.12 = p7429
    New 260.63 = p8597

Holy bloatware Batman!!! I used some very helpful posts in the jh owners lounge to see what was useful or not. Probably should have done a fresh install but I usually wind up doing that once a year anyway.

I have read some people are having missing keystrokes with the keyboard. I have noticed this but.. I attribute this to getting used to the chicklet design. Spacebar is my most noticeable problem. More time should tell.

I have also noticed a small popping noise once in a while while I'm clicking around in windows. It's not too noticeable or bothersome but will definitely keep an eye (or ear :p) out for this.

Will be putting some games on today but I foresee nothing but joy! I'm really lovin it so far..just got to get used to the size. I'm coming from a dell xps m1530...Lol. The backpack is nice but seems a little small for my needs. I'm considering the Slappa M.A.S.K. KOA or Highfive?

Thanks to all the posters here. Your GREAT!!!!!

Mine is scheduled to be delivered today, and I play it... WoW is very CPU intensive, and won't cause even the most minute hiccup with this laptop. Did you have a question?

Thanks everyone for the great posts. This forum helped me decide this was the laptop for me. I feel like I am getting a lot for my money in comparison to some other gaming rigs. Cheers all. :)

Just got mine last night but not from xoticpc. On Thursday, I canceled my order with xoticpc and I placed an order with Powernotebooks.com. I received it on FRIDAY! It took ONE DAY for Powernotebooks.com to get this beast to me factory sealed! Big thank you to Donald!

I did a fresh install and partition and tried Starcraft 2 on all Ultra settings. Everything ran smooth when playing campaign with the occasional hiccup when things got intense (ie. large number of units fighting). I suspect I will have to bump it down to High settings for multiplayer. Coming from the MBP 15", the game looked totally different on this machine! My eyes were bleeding from visual overload!!

I'm still getting used to the keyboard design of this thing. I feel its a bit cumbersome compared to the MBP.

Haven't been on a windows machine for a while and was wondering if anyone can recommend some good software for backups (like time machine) and monitoring cpu temps (I'm using speedfan but wondering if there's something better).

I was also wondering if there was any way to change the function keys so that I wouldn't have to press fn+fn[num] just to change brightness or sound?

First off, congratulations on your new machine, our legion is definitely growing! :D

Haven't really used backup software so I can't comment there For cpu temps I use the freeware version of CPUID HWMonitor and GPU-Z to monitor GPU temps.

For the Fn keys, you can set it in BIOS to not require to press Fn to change settings. The 'del' key will get you into BIOS at startup.

    Enjoy!

You can try using a pixel recovery program like DPT (search dead pixel tester) to see if it will unstick the pixel. If that doesn't work (usually doesn't) you can RMA the unit. Your machine comes with a 30 day no dead pixels warranty through ASUS.

Edit: got the downgrade to blue-ray on the G73jw cancelled. It delays the shipping because the system has to be tested after and they're having a very high volume of orders at xoticpc (back to school...). They will ship it to me Monday now. They're really good at contacting concerened customers. Can't wait to get it :)

Wow you guys here are so informative! I will download MSI Afterburner and possibly start with conservative overclocking. I will download the 400M series drivers too.

Again thank so much folks. I really appreciate your help. For what its worth, I'm Neo Plasm on Selbina server in FFXIV. Unfortunately, I'm green there too but have 4 years into FFXI experience before. Hit me up if you see me!

I was just wondering, what settings people had turned on/off for WOW. During Ice crown citadel 25 man's my fps is about 50-60 is that normal?

I can't find any such option in the JH bios. Perhaps the JW is that different but I doubt it.

    Cheers,

Hi Everyone, I have a question about the clock speeds on this machine. Cpu-z reports a variable clock speed of around 2900 mhz. The multiplier is at 22. I'm not complaining but I thought the machine would idle at the stock 1.73ghz and then go up to 2.9ghz when under load. I guess i"m just trying to understand how this all works. Thanks

I tried an 8GB PNY card I have and the reader does not see it. I wonder if the right driver is installed. Got my old ASUS W2W-A1 to read SDHC. The driver treats it like and IDE drive. Any thoughts?
