It's a hardware limitation. You want an ssd anyway.

ok i got mine back in end of oct, and for the most part have loved it, the doors are annoyin on the side ports, and break off fairly easy, but not a big deal, as far as performance goes its been wonderful, until last month that is, the backlight on the screen goes out, making it totally impossible to see anything at all, i take it in to be fixed under the best buy warranty, takes 3 weeks to get it back and when i do alot of my settings have been changed and my account altered, more than a lil annoying, i have it back for 3-4 days and the back light is gone again! anyone else have that issue with the display flickering once or twice then goes black? any idea what might be causing it? i mean once coulda been jus chance but twice so close together has to be something more to it. ATM im about 45 minutes from the nearest best buy and extremely limited on funds so not sure how soon i'll be able to take it back for repairs. thanks for ya time and any info or advice

I'm not trying to hijack anyone's thread, still not sure of the "structure" of the forum.

I have repeatedly checked for availability on ASUS website, it is always out of stock. I just haven't found a better price. I have emailed them with no response.

    M70SV/N70S/G71 HDD Bracket Assembly

Has anyone found a good source? The price of other netbook parts vendors are $15 - $20 higher, that I have found.

Would love to add another HDD just for games/media.

I'm looking into this laptop, but I'm wondering about the viewing angles. Is it annoying to watch a movie with multiple people from TV distance? I'd like a powerful laptop, but watching TV and movies is probably the #1 thing I do with my computer.

Hello. Really glad to find a forum for this laptop. Seems the asus forums are gone.

Has anyone has success with newer video drivers than the factory? I've tried just about all of them and they crash. Using the laptopvideo2go. 15 minutes into any 3D game and the frame rates drops to less than 1fps. Totally unplayable.

    Thanks, and have good day!

Asus GTX260m is a very picky card, not all drivers downclock on their own, nor perform well. Most of the drivers coming from MS update seem to work better and peform the best. I would suggest to try NVIDIA Geforce/Ion/Quadro 198.05 WHQL Drivers (MS Update), they are working on my GTX260m really good.

    I'm having issues with mine.

    1. The original power supply i had to hold on very tightly to the back to get to work.

    2. With a universal one it switch between ac mode and battery mode every two seconds (Even in bios.) (This only starting happen after battery calibration.)

    3. Have order the This replacement.

Any ideas on what is going on?

My G72GX always lags on any game I play. Even oblivion. The game freezes for ~4 seconds, the screen goes black for ~1 sec, then the game starts to lag alot.
It happens ever time I play OFDR or Crysis or Gmod or whatever. Any suggestions?

I am buying this laptop. I want a good all rounder to use quite a lot. I'm not a massive gamer, but I will put a lot of time into Starcraft 2. Can anyone comment on performance? Will this bad boy handle ultra on 1600-900 smoothly?

    Anyway, great review!

    What would you do ?

I recently purchased this unit (recertified) online and when it arrived, there were several things wrong with it. It had several deep scratches on the top, one of the two hinge-like silver pieces at the bottom sides of the LCD were missing, and it looked like someone had eaten cookies over top of the keyboard with some of the remains stick in the metal mesh part above the keyboard.

On top of that, the mfg. sticker on the bottom that shows the windows product code was previously removed and poorly re-attached with scotch tape.

The system itself actually seems to run just fine but I have not yet tested it's full capabilities.

The laptop was supposedly brought back up to mfg. standards and it was signed off as being 'OK' by someone from the ASUS company. If you received a unit in this condition, would you return it or just deal with the problems that came with the unit? Purchase price was around $780

No idea how much power Starcraft 2 needs with high settings, but the GTX 260 is still pretty close to top of the line. Can't really do better for the price.

I've not really seen a definitive answer to this question yet. I've heard quotes like "Handles it really well" and "Runs very smoothly", but I don't know what FPS you would get and what sort of resolutions.

But Ultra doesn't really bother me, I am just curious. I like the laptop for it's price and power ratio. Like I said, I'm not a huge gamer, and I prefer my Xbox.

Depending on how much money I have, i'll get this or the G73. :)

    Thanks for your help.

SCII runs fluently in Ultra @1600x900 I play the beta on my G72 without any problems (I'd say 60 fps straight).

Has anyone had problems with audio when connecting to an LCD through HDMI? I've updated the Realtek audio drivers but get no audio through my TV while connected. I have three audio devices listed (laptop speakers, digital audio output, and HDMI audio output) but the HDMI and Digital audio doesn't work to provide sound through the TV when selected.

I just got Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Awesome game, runs great except my gpu temps are hitting 91-94 degrees. This is without overclocking. I have never had temps this high before and I don't want to melt my gpu. I'm currently using this driver:

NVIDIA Geforce/Ion/Quadro 198.05 WHQL Drivers (MS Update)

Could it be only this game that loads my gpu? I'm thinking about getting a Cryo NXVT cooler, how much would it cool it down? Suggestions?

    Hello all,

I purchased this laptop primarily for SC2 and figured it would handle that game no problem. Unfortunately, whenever I run on high or ultra settings, I run into a wall of Lag and I'm forced to downgrade to low. This happens mostly during single player but at times it has happened to me on multiplayer as well. I'm not ultra savy with computers so I don't know what the problem is or how to diagnose it. I DO know that my temps seem to be running in line with the original posters so I don't think thats the problem. One thing I've noticed, when I start up my machine it asks me to download the updated bios which I do, but I guess it doesn't stick. Anyways, I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what I might be able to do to fix it....

    Thanks everyone!

I ran mine on a similar laptop, with c2d and GTX260m and i can run ultra but on 1366x768, with 1600x900 im not 100% sure an underclock GTX260m can handle ultra. You might wanna try different settings.

Im not sure what drivers you runing, but the original drivers and 18x.xx had some issues with SC2, try runing at least 198.05 (link on my sig) or newer, if you are comfortable with beta drivers you can try the latest, VERDE NOTEBOOK RELEASE 260, i like more 198.05 as they work well with Asus GTX260m as its very picky with downclocking on 2d, but you should try different drivers and see what works better for you. Remember to uninstall the others before you install new drivers.

You probably have the Asus update utility still installed (i unistalled it the first day as its unreliable), if you really want to flash you bios then go with the USB, its pretty simple and more reliable than the Asus win utility. Although if you dont have any problems with your computer there is not much reason to do it, i personally like to have the latest update always, but its risky when you dont need anything to gain.

My BB version worked great. I swapped it for an A1 with the Q9000 CPU and it chokes within 5 mins of starting SC2. Turns out it's heat related. The 260M in mine idles at 75-79C and jumps to more than 100C within 5-8 mins of playing SC2.

I just dropped it off at a local ASUS repair shop under warranty. We'll see what they replace or if they just re-paste. I told them I would pay extra to put the diamond paste on. I'll know if it's fixed by Thursday. Even my son can play SC2 on med with his G50VT from BB.

    Cheers,

The fan on my G72GX is running really loud and it won't stop running.

I have no idea what the problem is and where to even start. I cleaned the dust off the fan and that was it.

    It's really annoying.

Sounds like it's too hot. Get gpu-z and check your temps. The repair shop said my fan was clogged with dust they could only get at by taking the fan apart. Also the thermal paste dried up.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the response.

What are acceptable temperatures for this laptop?

It seems to be holding at mid to low 60s with the fan constantly running, though when I manually stopped the fan, it shot up to high eighties fairly quickly.

Looks like I'll have to take it in for repair.

So I hit 11219 in 3dmark o6. Is that bad? What did people 3dmark their 260 gtx machines back in the day?

I just noticed its about 1100 over what notebook says the gpu is supposed to do.
But it makes no reference to the cpu at all so perhaps they are using a g51 or something like that

Has anyone had a problem with at start up it gives the ASUS Republic of gamers screen, and then it gives you a black screen with a blinking cursor and it doesn't load windows? Or, if our boot priority is set to CD-ROM it gives you a message saying..."CD-ROM boot priority - no medium" and then just stops there with a blinking cursor. I tried doing a system recover using the Recovery Disk and the Driver Disk, when its finished, still end up with the same thing...
