Any sataII/III should work fine, a very reliable and good ssd for it would be Intel X25M G2 120 GB, or wait for intels G3.

    The G72GX supports Sata II = Sata 3.0 Gbit/s.
Sata III = 6.0 Gbit/s is only available in Sandy bridge setups (but all sata III drives are backward compatible, so should work with sata II, just might not be as fast).

Either of the following should be a good drive,
    Hitachi 7K500 0S02858 500GB
    Samsung 640GB HM640JJ
Western Digital Black Scorpio WD5000BEKT 500GB

Or you can go with hybrid like Seagate Momentus XT 500GB

    Thanks Again!

What is the max RAM that is supported for this laptop? I really wish (maybe you know) there was a thread that had all the max of this laptop.

Hey man I read pretty much all of it but if it was already asked sorry.

You said this machine can use up to 12gb of Ram. When I put this computer through the test to upgrade my ram it is telling me I can only use 6gb. Can you confirm this before I order the new ram? Because if I cant get more ram then I will just stick with what I have. :)

    Thank you in advance!

That's why I was asking too. Places seem to tell me that I can only go up to 6GB or RAM. I would love to have 12GB

Where are you ordering your ram from?

Hahah I didnt relize you posted that untill I posted it! :) Anyway I always order from NewEgg.com. They tend to have the best prices. Also I was doing some research and they have 4gb per stick of Corsair for 74.99 and the same version but two sticks of Corsair for 189.99!! lol

Im just going to purchase three sticks at 74.99 and save money. :)

Where would you order yours? And whoa! where do you get your interenet from!? Nice speed

    This is for two: Newegg.com - CORSAIR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model VS8GSDSKIT800D2

    This is for one: Newegg.com - CORSAIR 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory Model VS4GSDS800D2

You can find much cheaper but I would rather use what I know is the best. There is another brand that is better than this but you will see very little in changes.

Thanks! Are there 2 or 3 slots for this laptop?

I am assuming 3 so I could buy 3 chips to get my 12GB of RAM

Yup three slots on this laptop. Thats what I was wondering too. I really really hope I can put 12gb in it.

Hahah do you see what they did? I mean buying two of the singles is still cheaper than buying the two together?! I dunno what happened there but I wanna get my hands on them before the price changes.

If I had the cash I would buy 3 of them - :p

I don't see the point in buying 2 of them for 2 more GB of RAM.

Hey Volta, Have you upgraded your HD yet? I have a question regarding that. I want to upgrade the hard drive to a SSD or 10k rpm or higher. What would you recommend?

I looked on NewEgg and they have some nice ones. Not many with reviews so I wanted to chim in here before I make that purchase as well.

Im noob on these SSD now adays. I only had desktops untill they finally got into gaming laptops.

I don't know of any drives over 7200RPM for laptops... :p Remember they have to be 2.5". A 10k rpm or greater drive would require so much power, it would essentially drain the battery in a couple of minutes.

Ok I got the new SSD drive in over the weekend and it works great! The load time of windows is awesome and in games I cant see a big difference but I can see a difference. Eh the price for the time is it worth it? Possible if you like speed of loading things up it works great. Easy to install and the whole nine.

Edit: I found some nice advice so Temps are ok and accually low for loads.

Do you guys have any advice on overclocking this laptop? and what program to use? The one from asus doesnt work for me for some reason. Im going to look at it tonight but if there is a program you guys use instead to amp it up more.

Two questions if anyone is experienced with these two issues:

    1) I want to upgrade my RBBX05 to 1920*1080 but the connector on the stock video cable is on the wrong side of the screen. I've contacted Asus and searched numerous forums with no luck finding a part number or link to the cable that I need, can anyone confirm that 1422-00M0000 is the cable I need for the WUXGA screen?

    2) Does anyone have experience installing the BT-183 or BT-253 in the RBBX05, I haven't been able to find any info. on the www explaining or showing install. I'm not sure where the connector is on the motherboard but since the BT module came in the A1 model I would assume that it's possible to install on the RBBX05 model.

Thanks in advance for any input, screen is sitting at home and the previous screen upgrades I've done used the same cable...as this is my first 17.3" notebook I didn't realize the connector would be on the opposite side.

P.S.~ Anyone confirmed that 12GB of the Corsair PC2 6400 works in the G72GX?

Pretty much the same question as above, can the ram be upgraded? I have seen folks that say yes and others that say no I'm total noob in these matters but can easily switch out some parts but don't want to waste money.

Hi, I have an issue I hope someone can help me with. This is the second time my G72xgx has crashed. It wont start-up. It won't boot to safe mode. Do I need to reinstall windows? Is there a way to reinstall windows with out the discs?

I am kind of a newb with computers. I also did not read this whole thread(sorry). If there is a better place to search for help please let me know.

Not that I know of without the discs. You could install Linux on it to get it up and running.

Someone might know where you can get a disc to restore it to factory.

I'd assume either something's wrong with the hard drive, or you've got some severe malware infection (that shouldn't be the case unless you weren't keeping Windows up to date and didn't have like Microsoft Security Essentials on there).

Personally I'd want to know what's going on that an install wouldn't work like that...

Hmm...does using your Windows Repair disc work? That MIGHT get you going again if this is a drive problem, but I'd want to use SpinRight on the drive to figure out what's going on, and probably replace the drive, if that's what's wrong.

Thanks for the responses guys, When I moved, I misplaced the repair disc. I had no indications of a large malware problem. It froze up, I waited a minute or two, then blue screen. It shut down and would not come back on. I did have the drive divided into 2 partitions.

hi... just wanted to say... this laptop was good. till i installed a few games on it. like command and conquer, which was like 6 months later. at first i just wanted a laptop that could do minor gaming and more internet usage/gaming. but now I can't even watch a full netflix movie w/o it over heating.

first of all... c&c games are really not to vid card intense. specially when i was playing the first few games that came out about 8 years ago. it would just over heat and shut down. it was really annoying.

so i decided to check on reviews... it seems that there was an over heating problem. but worse is the reviews for asus RMA. its the worst. so i decided instead of sending to them, be with out a machine for 2 months and then get offered a lower end model replacement (even for those who only had their rigs for a few weeks) I decided to try and fix things myself. I opened up the laptop and noticed that although it does have a fan... it is cooling just a hollow mini cooling tube. and then there is the processor cooling system... or what ever it is... its basically a copper strip about 1/8 inches thick that spiraled about once and then there was 6inches stretching out... but doesn't have a fan nor was even near the cooling fan. looks like the mother board was in between it. Ill take pictures later on if u want. even turning on the keyboard lights raise the temperature 5 degrees F. now there was a mini cooling fan on top of the vidcard processor. but directly beneath it is the cover w/ no holes or vents of any sort... as i inspected the whole case it seemed like it had over heated so much the area where the small vent holes were is actually melting.

so what i did was i drilled holes into the cover right under the video card fan... covered the holes w/ a wide screen and bought a cool pad blowing air right into the hole. also added an external mini fan to the back of the laptop right infront of the exhaust vents to suck more air out of the exhaust.

it improved preformance just for a little bit. but then it started to get worse... my screen flickers now. just stitching panoramic pictures together takes the temp from 155 to 210 in just 2 mins. I have to turn off backlight for both keyboard and screen just to get it working better. but if i remove it from my computer room... and take it to a coffee shop... I can't even use it to check fb and be on the studies review website i utilize (just text no video/ads) it will over heat.

I paid 1200 dollars for this laptop... I didn't buy the bb extended warranty bc they screwed me once before with thier lies about no questions asked replacement. (that was $100 wasted)

now i want to just re-open this... get a new video card... add extra cooling fins to it... buff out the exhaust fans and find a way to water cool this thing. and run it all on a battery the size of the cool pad. cuz its starting to annoy me so much i want to throw it at a wall.

anyone else having this problem. any suggestions on what i could do? I mean... I really don't want to spend another 1200 bucks beefing up this laptop. I could have just bought a mac instead.

I've had this laptop for almost two years now and loved it. Have had serious temp problems to the point that it actually melted and warped the bottom covers. I have cleaned fan and vents multiple times. I was in process of getting new bottom cover and was going to apply new thermal when I got a nice puff of smoke coming outta the back of it. Im in the process of trying to take it apart to see if I can see what the problem is, or if the processor isnt fried. The problem is I can not figure out how to take this case apart. I removed all screws I can see but seems like theres some under keyboard. Am I suppose to take key board off, and if so how? I I just do not want to do anymore damage. thx

Have owned this laptop for several months now and love it after dragging my very old Dell XPS Gen 2 around for 5 years.

I just recently got around to finally updating the BIOS, but I do have one other issue with my G72GX: I bought it from eBay and I think some ASUS software might be missing from it. Namely, two media keys are lacking functionality. My Power, Touchpad and Overclocking buttons work fine but I get nothing when I press the two keys on the left - the Republic of Gamers button and the other one that looks like a lightning bolt into a circle.

Can anyone inform as to what these keys are meant to do and how I might get them to work properly? Thanks!

The first post about this laptop in this forum says you can use up to 12GB Ram. I cannot confirm this as mine is still completely stock.

Also just realized this topic/forum is sparingly used these days......
