Hi I instailled linux on the g72gx but now I decide I didn't need it anymore. So I tried to reformat my hard and reinstill windows 7. The grub loader is still their. Does anyone know how to get rid of it. Asus uses Recovery media instead of the regular istial cd so other blogs dont help.
-
I can't remember the steps, but I'm sure I had the option to format the drive before reinstalling. It was FAIRLY straight forward I think, although not 100% clear. Nice thing is they include the discs, and let you do a near-100% clean install!
-
the problem I think is it left the hidden recovery partition. I think that might be the problem but I don't knwo how to fix that. is their anyway to just remove grub?? I tried all three options for reinstaling windows.

Just got my G72GX RBBX05 and love it. One question:
What are you using to overclock the GPU? I tried this version of nTune:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.54.00.html
and got the BOSD. Is there a Windows 7 version out there somewhere?
Thanks for the help. -
-
it restored my Vista login screen that linux removed.
Not sure if they have updated it to Windows 7. -
-
Caution: this removes any boot loader. So you will need to rebuild the Windows boot loader (I hope the install disk can do that) or else reinstall Windows. -

Hey All -
Just got a G72GX from Best Buy last Friday and have a few questions. I read most posts in this thread first
1a. No RAID? Really!?! The chipset does support it, but just flashed to the newest BIOS and don't see it. I wanted to get another similar drive and run them in RAID 0, but I guess I can't. Any suggestions?
1b. Here's a (hailmary) question about the BIOS. I use DDWRT on all my routers and love it. If people can create an open source flash for something like that, I'd imagine that there would be a similar group that does the same for BIOS which would enable many options. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone know of one? This way perhaps RAID could be enabled.
1c. Where can I get the bracket needed for a 2nd hard drive? I saw on here and a few other pages people saying it needed one, but does anyone have a link or the part number?
2. Everything was working fine on Smart Login (it's pretty fun) but now the camera doesn't work when i want to add pictures to my profile. Skype saus there's an error with the camera too. However - the camera DOES work on the login screen and shows as working fine in device manager. Initially, I was using Win7 drivers , but then tried drivers from ASUS's site but no change has taken place in status. it is a Suyin.
If it helps, here's what I've done to it so far:
-Wiped the factory OS partition (kept recovery one), created 2 new partitions in the empty space, and installed Win7 Ult x64 to one and kept the other for storage & organization.
- Flashed BIOS to newest version - Mine was at v3 and now it's at v6
- Installed all drivers as needed and a few ASUS utilities (Turbo Gear, SmartLogin, and a couple more.)
- Put page file on 2nd partition - even though same physical disk, I did it anyways
- Overclocked the GPU after reading the 1st post
Thanks for reading this (especially about the RAID venting.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks! -
This is going to sound kind of stupid but , Does Win7 have the classic theme just like Vista?
I got used to it because I used on my Inspiron 1521 to get all the juice I could get of performance and well Ill probably do the same with this one when it arrives. Lol
Thanks in advance -
I don't think it does, though you can disable Aero, though from my experience under both Vista and 7 performance is better and more reliable with Aero enabled. You'd have to have some sort of incredibly old hardware for it to matter what theme you're using IMO.

Is there any laptop coolers big enough for this laptop?
-
Also here is Tobucks temps with NZXT

Good luck! -
NVM, I googled and it does have classic theme.
EDIT:
Hey guys, so you recommend to reinstall Win7 to erase the extra stuff? If you do it, do I have to download all the programs and drivers again from the web page ?
And how can I remove partitions or create other ones? do you recommend to remove/keep the partitions of the HDD?
One last question, I read in a thread here ( dont remember if was this one or the other review thread ) that you can add up to 12GB of RAM but why does the box says just to 8GB more? Do you I have to tweak something to add 12GB of RAM?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance. -
Hey All -
Today i got in a new flash drive that has USB on one side and ESata on the other. When I try to plug it into my G72GX, nothing happens. It doesn't show up in the BIOS, let alone Wind7's device manager.
A couple of days ago, I did add an SSD. Perhaps the laptop can only handl;e a certain number of SATA devices? I looked all over Google for an answer or verification that it's true, but cannot find anything.
Any idea? - Thanks! -
Please scratch the above post. - It's resolved.
Turns out that the device requires a powered ESATA port. I didn't know there were powered and non-powered ones. Since the Flash drive has USB and ESATA at each end, I found that it comes with a cable (at first i thought it was for extention) where you can plug it into a non-powered ESATA port and also the other end into a USB port simply for power. Once I did this, it worked and I can transfer lightning fast.
Guess I should read the manual next time... Thanks -

This question was asked earlier in this thread...but I didn't see a resolution. Any confirmation of what optical drive interface is in the G72 (SATA or IDE)? And if so, what bluray drive someone has successfully installed?
Any and all help would be appreciated. -
It would be SATA, since that's what's been used for quite a while now.
-

I realize that SATA has been very common for some time...just getting conflicting information about verifying that the G72 does indeed have this type of drive...and hoping that someone who has swapped out the drives can verify that this is the case.
Thanks for the help. -

I found the info I needed and thought I would go ahead and post it here in the event that anyone else here has the same question. Video is from a different Asus laptop but applies to the G72:

So this is the drive that is shown on the video...
LG Electronics CT10N Slim SATA Blu-Ray Combo Drive
http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-CT10N-Blu-Ray-Combo/dp/B001TOD5E4
Is this drive compatible with the G72? If so, will be require additional software to watch the Blu-Ray movies?
Thanks, guys! -
holliday777 Notebook Evangelist
Yes...that is correct. And from what I understand, that drive will work in the G72. You would need additional software to watch Bluray movies...here are a couple links:
http://www.amazon.com/Corel-WinDVD-9-Plus-Blu-Ray/dp/B001GIU7P8
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd/overview_en_US.html
Hope that helps... -

No problem. Also...just to let you know that I bit the bullet and swapped out the dvd drive in my G72 tonight and put the bluray from my wife's Sony Vaio in it (she never used it to watch movies)...the install was relatively painless...the youtube video walkthrough was a big help.
Also...I downloaded trials of several bluray software packages...and the best by far was this one:

There are coupons that you can find online to save you 20% off the retail price.
Highly recommend this setup. Hope this helps someone at some point. -
It's better than PowerDVD? What are the differences? So far so good with PowerDVD more or less, although I've had some issues with extras content on some Season 2 Star Trek Blu Rays.

Hello!
I bought my G72gx laptop about 1 month ago and its pretty awesome, I love it, a nice upgrade from my previous HP laptop, which ended up with that problem where when you turn it on, the leds light turn on but the screen stays black.
So, after looking around I decided to go for the ASUS g72gx because it looked awesome and because I heard ASUS had a good reputation for building amazing high quality laptops.
However....
There are 2 problems that have really been annoying me
1. For some reason while Im playing there's a big fps drop. Happens very often. The only way to fix it seems to be restarting the laptop. After that it goes on normally.
2. When Im using the laptop a weird noise starts coming from inside the laptop. The best way I can describe the sound is something repeatedly tapping on a plastic surface. When this happens the laptop freezes up, and the cursor changes to what it looks like when its loading (shiny blue circle thingy). Its only happened 2 times so far. First time happened while I was watching a video, second time happened while I was playing Fallout 3. Both times I had to turn off the laptop by pressing down the power button. When I turned it back on it worked normally.
Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix these problems? Do I have to download something?
I really hope I can solve this without having to return it and get a new one. I still have the warranty but the problem is that I dont live in the US, so returning it would be very complicated.
Thanks a lot for the help -
Could that be a fan problem? Might explain both issues.
-
I sure hope its nothing like that. I dont trust any computer repair shop around here, so if its a problem like that and I cant fix it I guess I'll have to find some way to return it and get another one
This is my first asus product, and after all Ive heard about them building quality stuff, this is kinda dissapointing
Im going to try updating the BIOS and nvidia drivers.
The new BIOS update is the 602, right? -
Yes 0602 is the last version of BIOS. Have monitored your temps while playing? If you are going to upadate BIOS, do it using EZFlash through BIOS menu. Do not use WinFlash, that could end bad for your laptop.
-
Seems to be same (might be OEM) but work great for less.
Cheers, -
I have had the Asus G72GX for about 3 days and i'm amazed at what it can do with what hardware is provided. I'm just curious though. If I set the settings for the GPU to the stock 260 GTX, what temp should I be worried about. I was playing Mass Effect 2 with the CPU OC'ed to 5% of normal and the GPU set to normal and not under clocked. It was ranging around 80C is that bad?
-
-
No cooler, I put the cpu back to stock because the turbo gear was messing with the ram making it unstable. The gpu is set to stock and not underclocked like they gave me. I was just wondering if that was bad. I mean everything in mass effect 2 is maxed out and it handles amazingly. I'm used to temps on a desktop, not a laptop. I guess the heatpipes they use in this little beast helps out a lot with the cooling. The cpu normally was around 60 C and the gpu would normally peak at 80 C.
-
-
The idle temps that I get are for the CPU 33 C and GPU 52 C, I'm using nvidia system monitor to monitor the temps, and what does ambient temp mean? Also is there a way to change the GTX 260 video card inside this laptop? It looks like it can be removed but I just wanted to know. Been searching google and can't find a straight answer. And one more thing (sorry about all the questions) If I change the the stock HDD 5400 RPM with a 7200 RPM will there be a heat increase enough to increase the heat of my cpu and gpu?

I bought my Asus G72GX RBBXO5 about a month ago for $940 from a vendor on ebay. It had a Best Buy label on the box. Don't know how the dude got it and I don't care - I saved close to $100 including the tax I didn't pay. Anyway - I love this computer. Does everything I expected it to and more. Finally bought Crysis, cranked it up to high settings and this computer didn't even stutter. I also put it through some intense 3d studio sessions and it was flawless. Great machine for the price. I highly recommend it. Fastest starting computer I've owned. I can be on the internet within 25 seconds from a cold start. Can't beat that. Still getting used to Windows 7, but seems to be pretty stable so far. I researched for months and when the price went down for this machine I was all over it.

@ nech0604 Just run the recovery again from the hard drive to restore the unit to the factory specification. After its done blowing away the installed partition try to boot up to windows.
If at this point you still get the grub loader you should find either a windows xp or windows 7 DVD (you can easily find an ISO online) boot up with the disk and check for a repair option. Windows 7 gives you this option I am pretty sure. What you want to do is basically format the MBR or let Windows 7 repair the MBR. Off the top of my head I am not sure of the exact steps but this is what you are trying to accomplish. I can check later today on the exact steps based off the CD. You can I think also do this from the restore menu but I will have to do a test run to see. -
So, I love the laptop. Great machine. Was playing Modern Warfare and BF:BC2 flawlessy.
Then, it happened. Went to start up Steam one day and it froze on me. Tried many different things to solve the issue per the steam forums. Nothing.
So, I did a reformat after I bought an external drive to back up my stuff. Installed steam, same thing. Freeze.
So, apparently, this laptop has a problem with the Creative Drivers installled. Once I uninstalled them, it worked fine, just I have no sound.
Anyone know about this? This is totally upsetting since I play only Steam games(over 175.00 invested in games).
Thanks. -
-
You don't need those Creative drivers for sound, and they're a known problem. I wish Asus and Dell would quit paying Creative for their ridiculous software-leave it off on a clean install.
-
Awesome. Thanks!

Finally got a decent score today. after a reformat, this is what I got.

I have this laptop but my idle temps are too high for me. I idle at 64, and i am using a cryo cooler. Are there any drivers proven to help lower temps that i could download?

Has anyone heard about keyboard issues with this machine?
When I am running around in a videogame my character will instantly stop for no reason. It is no big deal for typing but when playing video games each second counts. But even when I am typing sometimes I will get two letters when I only typed one.
