Alright registry keys don't work. This typing issue really makes this laptop suck especially since I type and write alot.

Man...I just got my Q1 today...and OMG the thing is ginormous!
But I'm in love with it! It's beautiful!
The whole battery deal is woah...I was playing Starcraft for about a half hour to an hour...drained nearly all the juice. It was only on standard too.
We're stil in wuv though... -
Woohoo...I have ordered G71G-Q2...The dealer told me that it will take 1 week as he has to get the stock....I cant wait to get it
-
Yeah, I'm sure the Q1 would get less battery life than the A1 as it uses a quad core CPU. It won't be great for mobility, but at least it'll rip through HD encoding/decoding with ease.
-
He Heee!
Gotta love it!
I use mine for Graphics & media production, & I frequently take it to work on a project after church, or at church staff meetings, the other staffers there nicknamed it "Norad"
Even my Pastor, who usually has the biggest & baddest laptop of everyone on staff was impressed. (he bought one of those bronze/copper HP dv5 's with a 15 inch screen the same time my G71 showed up)
. . . He doesnt use his to show off stuff at the staff meetings anymore.
He tells me to use mine.
I took my G71 to best buy to fit it to a briefcase I can carry it in, (NOT as easy as you think! -most 17 inch laptop bags are too small for it, but I eventually found a good one that fit). The sales people there saw my machine & crowded around to get a look -. . . "I've never SEEN an asus model that BIG in person before!" --one of the sales folks actually hung around around just to TOUCH the laptop!
If you only knew what I had to use before getting my G71!
(quirks & all!) I love this thing! -
Now back to dealing with the Quirks of this machine---
Has anybody experienced an issue with the g71g's touchpad sending the cursor to the top or bottom edge of the screen when you double-tap to select something?
We're talking about during a quick double-tap, the first tap, the cursor is centered on the button you want, (Say, somewhere near the middle of the screen) then at the second tap, (a millisecond later) the cursor is found in the systray, or at the top edge of the display for some unknown reason.
This doesnt happen all the time, but often enough to make me post about it.
If this happened to you, how did you fix it? -
Go to my thread.....
Ok.. thanks for clicking.
Ok, im looking for a 17" Laptop, that is very quick, Attractive and is good money for value, And ofcource Good for Games !
Now i know people are gonna say ASUS! BUT!
The Asus g71v 7t001c in The Uk is available for rougly £1162 cheapest, Thats with (Core 2 Duo Procsesser not Quad or core extreme).
Here's A link to the Laptops Specs.
http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...c=y#productTop
Ok Now the Dell Studio 17, Theres diffrent versions But the £629 or £749 obviously... Here's the link
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs
Riiiighhht lets put it this way, This is 2.4 Ghz the Asus is 2.53ghz
The Asus features an overclocking tool that by what i heard can boost it to 2.9 ghz on Turbo !
The design of the Asus with the lovely lovely flashing lights is.. Appealing lol
But really, What are the diffrences, Are they big or is the Asus a waste of money for £1163 when the Dell is a good amount cheaper.£120 - £150 saved if i order tomorow rather than the next day on the DELL so i need an answer really quick! :O
Now i am only a school kid right. But don't think i don't got the dosh, Selling things in school can make alot of money
So... is the Asus all the flashing lights that your paying for, or isit good money for value and much more effective in performance compared to the Dell? -
They claimed they had them, and might still do, but after being led on for over a fortnight I doubt it.
It explains why it's so expensive though - if it was still being made, it would be well under 1000 by now.
Sorry. If you can't fork out the extra for a G71G, you'll probably have to go for the Dell.
Oh, and as an offside: did you guys know that mouse that comes with the Q1 (and possibly the others) is worth $70? I was very pleasantly surprised when I found that out, seeing as it's a free accessory! -
Looks like the 702 BIOS version has been posted on the Asus support download download site. Has anyone tried them yet?
-
Woah, from 411 to 702?? That's quite a jump! D/ling and flashing now - will tell you how it goes.
Ta for the heads up Alowisney. xx
EDIT: Tried WinFlash and EZ Flash, and both claim that the BIOS version isn't valid. Don't have time to flash from disk at the moment. I might later, but I don't hold out much hope (and am wary about forcing something it clearly doesn't want to do!).
Anyone else had better luck? -
I ran both of those and saw the same error. I guess Asus miscatagorized it?
-
One of the games I play is Worms Armageddon (yes, I know, I am playing a 10 year old game on a monster of a machine, haha) and to shoot you need to hold space for power. Well, when it doubletaps for you, you end up shooting yourself in the face. I know it's just a game, but it is one example of how the double keystroke can be annoying.
The Direct Consol for MSN is kinda annoying... But thats mostly my friend's faults. since they all have extremely LONG MSN names.... takes like 2 min to scroll through their name just so I can see the message they sent, lol. -
Hmm. Does seem a bit odd that the version jumped from 411 to 702, and the BIOS fixes don't seem like anything recognisable, so that would be my guess, too.
Aww, and here was me getting my hopes up. ^.^
@Mumps Looks like it'd work (or not mess things up, at least), but I'm not too keen with messing with the registry until I hear more from others, too. But as it is, it's the only solution we have (I'm just not too annoyed by it, so I'm okay with waiting a little longer). -
First, I would like to say that I absolutely love this laptop. It had a few quirks to work out, like having to download the drivers from the Realtek site to fix the random popping noises, and having to send it to get fixed because it had a stuck pixel when I got it, but those were all fixable.
Now the only problem I'm left with is this really annoying double typing issue that others have mentioned. I don't think I had it until my I sent my laptop back to get the screen replaced and they flashed my BIOS to 411 for some reason. BIOS 406 is broken on their site and I'd rather not install bios 402 bbecause (see the double typing) it is the first the very first version, but I really think it may be related to BIOS.
I've tried changing the ease of access settings and then setting the delay as was recommended by another poster, but I couldn't find a good setting that would fix the problem but not screw up my normal typing. I even wrote a program that had a more precise timer and found out that when the keyboard screws up and double types, the delay between keystrokes is between 10 and 120 milliseconds. Unfortunately my normal typing with a word with a letter in it twice in a row is about 100 ms, so it is not possible to only filter out when the keyboard screws up.
I'm starting to get really frustrated now, and Asus customer support has been absolutely no help. As a software developer, typos can get very annoying and they are even more annoying when they are not even your fault. In case anyone has the same problem and is as annoyed as me, I'm going to be doing some experiments, including downgrading my BIOS to 402 and trying to take out the keyboard, detach it and reattach it. If neither of those work, I'm going to pester Asus until they replace the keyboard on my laptop. -
Alright, found out that the double typing issue is not related to any specific BIOS version. Just downgraded to 402 and I am still having the same pproblem (see, still there). Now to look at the manual and figure out how to take apart the keyboard, I'm hoping it's just a loose connection or something of that sort, but I somehow don't think so.
-
I'm looking at this computer (with Quad-core) and comparing to the HP HDX18t.
Is there any advantages this laptop has over the the HP?
Thanks!
-Andy. -
I just ran a customization on the HP you mentioned and it looks like to put the Q9000 with 6 gigs of RAM into it, dual 250 Gig HDDs (to be like the G71G-Q1), and Blu-Ray it ran $2,544.98 after the $200 instant rebate. That's as apples to apples as I could get but the HP has a bit bigger screen and to get 6 Gigs of RAM I had to upgrade the GPU. That was also adding a 2 year warranty like the Asus has. The G71G-Q1 runs around $1970.59 not including a $100 mail in rebate.
It just depends if you want to spend more on the HP for what you get. You can read this thread and see the problems that people (myself included) are having with the G71G. I don't know how that HP is as far as quirks go so you may want to see if there are any that are show stoppers.
Edit: The price on that HP also doesn't include a nice mouse and bag like the G71G comes with either so just take that into account. -
Thank you very much for that information. Very helpful!
The HDX18t is on at Best Buy for $1849, with dual 250gig HDD, Blu-Ray but only 4 gigs of RAM. Are you saying that you cannot put 6gigs of RAM in the HDX without upgrading the GPU? Are you further saying that the HDX has an upgradeable GPU?
-Andy.

So basically the HP is really a better deal than the Asus if you take into account the larger screen and remote? It's only a few bucks to add RAM these days.
Or am I missing something?
Thanks for your help.
-Andy. -
So I just got a Wireless N Router for my G71G-a2 and it's stuck at 54mbps - anyone else having the same problem? I've tried searching around for setting but haven't found something to fix this.

ok if someone could help me out i would absolutely appreciate it, how in the world to i revert back to an older version of bios. i stupidly decided to upgrade to 411 for no reason and im having a few issues now that ive done it and cannot for the life of me figure out how to get back to an older version say 406 would be fine any help is appreciated thanks!
-
What kind of issues are you experiencing with BIOS411?
-
See my BIOS guide (link in signature). -

ok so i have a question i have seen in different places different things can anyone confirm what is the best cpu you can upgrade this too, i have seen several places saying the q9300 but from what i have been told that is a socket 775 cpu and this mobo is a 478 so which one is it can we only upgrade to the q9000 or the q9300?? anyone please would just like to know for future reference especially since quad cores are getting even cheaper since the i7 came out.

Wow, a G71G w/ Geforce GTX 260M 1GB?!

The screen is a 18.4" vs. 17.1" on the Asus. Resolution is basically the same at 1920 x 1080 vs 1920 x 1200.
For me the GPU isn't a dealbreaker. I'm honestly not an HP fan, and would prefer to buy ASUS, but with the typematic problem I'm reading about on the forum, and the lack of a remote, I'm not sure what the big deal is about the ASUS. -
I personally have not have any issue with typing/keyboard, but there are several ways to solve the keyboard lag which worked for many G71G owners.
As for the remote, it's typically not the norm for gaming notebooks to include one. And since the HP HDX18 is aimed more for the multimedia user, a remote may seem to be in order. -
Thanks for clarifying that David.
I'm still on the fence until I can get my hands on the ASUS. The HP is easy to find, but I can't find the ASUS at any Brick and Mortar, unfortunately. -
Yeah, it'll be hard to find the G71G in any "brick & motar" store unless you live near an Asus reseller or know someone in your neighborhood that owns one. -
I was able to get the 702 BIOS to update by selecting the .BIN file and not the .ROM file from the zip. Overclocking works and so far I haven't had any double letters when typing. It doesn't show up as version 702 though in WinFlash. Here's what it shows up as.

In a last attempt to fix this double typing keyboard issue once and for all, I disassembled the laptop, removed the keyboard cable and reseated it. There appears to be no change at all in the problem at all. I have asked Asus about the problem and after suggesting I reinstall the ATK drivers (no change) they are telling me to send it in for repair.
I am very certain that it is a hardware issue since I have reimaged my laptop 3 times, tried every BIOS available for the laptop and installed the very latest of every driver from the Asus site and nothing has helped or changed the problem even in the slightest. I don't know if this is just a common hardware defect for this laptop or if only some people are noticing it because of how fast the type, but it is driving me insane.
I don't want to lose my laptop for a week or more only to have them send it back because they can't reproduce the problem (you have to type a few paragraphs before encountering it and it can easily be mistaken for human error) or don't understand how I explained it, or even replace it with an equally defective keyboard, but I don't think I have much choice now. -
Oh, awesome Alowisney! I would flash RIGHT NOW, but I really don't have the time (isn't that always the way??). :/
Tomorrow or ASAP. Yay, thanks for the info! -
I've found that it doesn't completely get rid of the double characters when typing but it reduces it a LOT. I used to get several doubles while typing a page but now I can go a few pages without any doubles. The overclocking is there, but I'm not really using it. When I set it to 15% it would just shut my laptop down when I tried to run the Windows Experience Index. I haven't had any games that really tax this laptop so I haven't missed the overclocking and I keep forgetting about it when I'm playing one of my older games.

I too have the double-key issue, and after installing 702 the problem is now 99% gone; I've only seen it happen once since I upgrading BIOS yesterday, whereas before it was happening every 5 minutes or so.
It took a few months, and I'm disappointed with the ASUS QA process, but after this BIOS update, as well as placing a spacer to fix the fan scrapping noise (I used aluminium (from a beer can instead of cardboard as others have suggested) and updating the realtek audio drivers to (reduce) the mic recording issue, my G71G is finally working as expected.
The only (minor) remaining issue is the web cam fitting is loose (so moves around when the lid is opened and closed), once again something that should have been picked up in QA. Should be able to fix that by wedging a piece of rubber between the casing and the camera.
Good luck, hope 702 fixes your issue!
EDIT: Make that about 95% gone, double-key has happened a few more times today. -
Am I missing something here? I downloaded the BIOS again, but there was only the .rom in the .zip (there may well be an obvious explanation, and I'll kick myself afterwards).
Or is it possible to upgrade via the .rom file now? -
I use WinFlash, it reports that it needs to reboot with this ROM file, which it does and then fires up the EzFlash (I think that was it).

Has anyone been able to use the overclock function in Turbo Gear Extreme since updating the BIOS (702) in either the G71g-Q1 or Q2? Furthermore has anyone got the Performance menu to appear in Direct Console? I ask, because, I've gotten neither-just the same limited options as under the previous (411) Bios!
-
Overclocking works for me. I don't actually use it but TurboGear has the option on a G71G-Q1.
-
-
I have a dual boot Vista/Windows 7 and initially (and stupidly) attempted to update the 411 BIOS from Windows 7 but it appeared to just revert to the previous version (401)! So I realized to install from Vista but chose not to install back 411 but straight to 702. -
ok...now after installing bios 702, I got a Turbo Gear option in bios which I turned on...After I booted into windows, I tried overclocking and again it is an epic fail because Turbo Gear in windows doesnt allow me to press the freaking Overclocking button....But in advanced tab it allows me to set values for overclocking like 3%, 5% 10% which I was not able to do before...But still it is of no use unless I can actually overclock... I tried searching for any registry entry for Turbo gear overclocking mode but couldnt find it...Has anyone found a workaround for this one??
Update--- Now I know the reason for it. The Turbo Gear option in bios is not getting saved. So it always stays at disable whatever I do and hence in Windows Overclock option is grayed out.So now I have to wait for a new bios version...lol -
I got my laptop back from repairs today. They replaced the keyboard siince (sigh double keystroke) they couldn't find any problems with the BIOS nor the registry that could be causing the double keystroke issue. Has anyone confirmed that the 702 BIOS will reduce the frequency of double keystrokes other than si618?
Furthermore, I came upon this thread which I am very interested in and I thought g71 series owners would be interested in too. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=357807
apparently, the bios flash will increase the performance of the 9800m gs drastically. However, I haven't tried it yet since I'm not expert on BIOS flashing. If anyone can confirm that this also works for the g71 series then I will go ahead and flash.
Thanks -
From all I've seen on different forums about this issue, it sounds like a serious hardware defect that only some people are noticing or caring about. They are probably making changes to the BIOS to minimize the problem and filter out double typing that happens faster than it is possible for a human to type, but I have also noticed when I made a program to monitor and attempt to fix this issue thaat (I guess it is not fixed) some of the double types happen too slow to distinguish from actual typing, so it may even be that the problem is not 100% fixable through bios or software.
I am reluctant to send my computer back in though because I don't know if they would even replace my keyboard because they can't easily reproduce the issue or even if replacing the keyboard would help since many others seem to have this problem as well.
Does anyone know if there is a non-Asus laptop kkeyboard (I don't think the double typing improved at all) that can be used as a replacement for the one that comes with the G71G?
