its definitely not a hardware issue. I can assure you since I just got my keyboard replaced in Taiwan. The techies said that there wasn't any abnormalities in the bios nor registry. I'm beginning to suspect whether the synaptic point device driver may be causing the problem. There is a thread on the g50v series which had a similar keyboard problem and was fixed by uninstalling the synaptic driver.

I'm really glad I came here before RMAing my notebook. I had a feeling that the fan noise was a simple problem, and this pretty much confirms it. Now I don't have to be without the computer for however long it would have taken them to "fix" it and send it back.

For some reason, my fan issue seemed to solve itself out. I have already requested and received a new fan unit from Asus, but by the time I received it, the fan no longer made any obnoxious noise or vibrations.

The G50vt keyboard problems are completely different, my wife got a G50vt at the same time I got my G71G and she has experienced the keyboard lag and even dropping keystrokes that are mentioned in the other thread, but she has never experienced the double keystroke problem that I have on my G71G. They are completely separate problems with most likely separate causes.

Nice to know that ASUS sent out a new fan, fwiw my fan noise disappeared for a while and then came back again.

I didn't want to use cardboard to increase the spacing between fan and its case, so I took a small cutting from an empty beer can, folded over once and placed over the edge of the fan casing (at nearest spot to the rubbing marks), worked a treat!

I actually tried to use a cardboard cut-out, but it didn't work as well as I hoped. I'm glad to hear your improvisation skills are much better than mine... I would never have thought of using an empty beer can :p

The GPU is not soldered, but also not upgradable.

Asus uses a proprietary inverted GPU, meaning that even if it's MXM, it won't be able to fit any other MXM GPUs that other manufactures produce.

No, because Asus will not sell you a 260M GPU for you to upgrade and any other 260 GPUs from other manufactures will not work on the G71

Yes, the CPU is upgradeable but doing so voids your warranty

Is there something that improves or upgrades the graphics externally (not needed now, but maybe in in 2-3 years)?

WHatever they come out with that does such a thing will be limited by the bandwith of Firewire/USB2.0 and not be very effective honestly. You would need an entire new external format to make it near useful in gaming.

Im only assuming the G71 has one but. The Express slot is pci-e based and there for not only faster then what your thinking its a perfect connector for an external solution.

Not only that I do believe that ASUS was the one company who did make an external pci-e/express card based GPU setup. It was only like a 6 series though it wasnt anything recent.

I put the release candidate on my G71G and everything works except for the On Screen Display for things like Brightness up and Down and Volume up and down. The Fn keys work for those things but the OSD doesn't show. It does show for the Wireless Console2.

Has anyone got the OSD working? What do I need to do. Thanks.

    Hi, I've got G71g version with q9000, 2x320 hdd, 9800gs and 4GB DDR2.
I've got a little problem - direct console stopped working, I tried to reinstall it from the asus cd, but the installation is failed. What should I do? Where can I download direct console 2.0 from?

is there any way to use turbogear overclocked mode on this model?

    regards

Try uninstall direct console first and then install it again in safe mode. There may be a newer version on the Asus website.

Try updating your BIOS and see if it enables you to OC your CPU.

I've got the newest bios, on this forum I read that downgrade to previous version gives nothing...
direct console works fine now, I must reinstall all this software:
    ATK100 Driver util
    ATK Generic Utilitiy (AGFNEX)
    ATKOSD2
    ATK Hot Key
    Direct Message / Direct Console

I have updated bios to 902 and turbo gear to 1.00.22 and still I can not turn on overclock mode o_O
wow, a 902 bios disappear from the asus website :)

I upgraded to 902 and my overclocking isn't working even though that's what the release notes say this update is to fix. I used an odd version of the 702 BIOS and was able to overclock, but it was never very stable. I flashed to the real version of 702 and couldn't overclock again and now 902 is the same story.

I'm also having an odd problem happen when my computer is turned on first thing in the morning. I get this shadowing colored static. It's hard to describe but it's usually green behind white and pink behind other colors. It's not doing it consistently and a reboot usually takes care of it. It's definitely not software as it does it at the POST screen. Think it's the graphics card or the LCD?

What is the music card in this notebook? Does someone know that? Everest told me that is Realtek Unknown @ Intel 82801JB ICH10 - High Definition Audio Controller, but e.g. how many channels we have?

The G71G uses a Realtek audio card. The notebook itself has 2 channels, but it can support 5.1 audio via the spidf jack.

Today I got the email from Technical Support Engineer. He says that Q9000 doesn't support overclock mode in this model. Info on the website was wrong, he confirmed that.

You can always use SetFSB to overclock the CPU. I haven't tried it yet, but you'll need to find the PLL first in order to use that program.

well I have a couple of questions, so if anyone knows anything about this ill appreciate it.

I bought my asus g71g-a1 back in december and in mid january I got the screen replaced because of a dead pixel.

the thing is that the screen used to look kinda distorted (like flicker, static, something weird) but it used to happen rarely and it was for about a couple of seconds, now thats happening more and more often and it lasts up to 15 secs and Ive seen that a way to stop it on that moment is to move the screen a little bit, has anyone suffered of this issue? if so, did you fix it? and how?

the second thing is that I want to know if any bios fixed the douple tap issue without screwing the cpu overclock ? (or did that issue with overclock was only with the quad core version?)

thanks in advance for any help

Looks like your LVDS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-voltage_differential_signaling cable (also known as coax cable), the one that is moving the graphical information to the screen, is going bad.

It's either in the cable or in the connections: 1. to the mainboard, 2. to the LCD itself.

See my similar problem here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=197630 to check if you get similar symptoms.

As a first step, you could try to open up the computer and make sure the connections 1. and 2. are secure and tight. If that doesn't solve the problem, try getting the cable either for free from the ASUS service point (if you're still under warranty), or from the ASUS eStore or a similar store in your region. (see Info Booth for some information on buying ASUS components)

The first time was for a stuck pixel. The second time was last week for this:

It was a green static around some colors and a pink all over white.

I talked to tech support and the guy said that he thought it was the LCD or the video card so they'd replace both. When it got to the Indy repair facility it sat there for 3 days with nobody looking at it until I called and asked about it. They replaced the LCD but not the video card and within two hours of me using it it was doing the same thing again. This time it's going to the California repair facility so maybe they're competent.

Oh, and I had to call back for them to note that when I was packing the laptop to send it back I noticed that the lid had been scratched where it wasn't before. Good job Asus!

is the OLED just not included in the bios or something? Is there someone who can write a bios to turn it on or something? is there a way to Add one if there isn't one?

if i look REALLY close i can see the outlind of some sort of screen because i have REALLY good eyes. maybe its just me. I'll shine a flashlight on it

edit: it seems to be solid, but maybe its just the light I'm using. I can see a little something, but idk if its just a long smudge or an OLED

What's wrong with Vista? I've been using vista for years now and after SP1 - Vista has been even better (Games still work great on it). Windows 7 is leap years better than XP and Vista and you get Windows 7 free (voucher/coupon).
Still can't figure out why people think Vista is an eyesore...
It works fantastic on the G71GX-RX05, especially with 6GB of ram, you'll never have problems.
Give Vista another try with this laptop before you revert/dual boot with XP.
You're better off dual booting with Windows 7, the superior Windows OS anyway.

Well My plan is to take my new asus g71gx-rx05 and give it Unbuntu Linux (highly reccomended by friends and ITs), Windows XP (ran it for last 5yrs? very familiar with it, and I can theme the desktop), and Windows Vista (comes with computer) will be freely upgraded to windows 7. Thats why I asked how or where should I get xp on my computer.

I was hoping to find a cost effective way to run xp or vista on the same computer. I thought I could either buy windows XP at newegg or wait till i get windows 7 upgrade then buy vista and downgrade.

Ultimately I want: XP, 7, Unbuntu Linux triple boot setup w/ express gate (seperate power button)

I am here to vent sorry for anyone that does not want to hear it but to all others consider this a warning. First off the Laptop was amazing I could not be more happy with it aside form the size but the bang for the buck makes up for that.

My problem is with the customer support when I ended up having issues with the laptop. I am going on my forth week without a laptop now. It was awaiting parts from 8/24/2009 and is still "waiting for parts" 9/14/2009

They finally offered to give me a new laptop because of the ridiculous wait so I was ready to say well it was a long wait but at least I am being taken care of. Then I looked at the specs of the laptop they offered as a replacement. Took me from a 1920x1200 to 1440 x 900 screen res, Dropped my Blue Ray drive down to a DL DVD burner, and went from a Q9000 processor to a core 2 and then that was only a 2.5G

As of this moment they still have not done anything to make me think this will be taken care of anytime soon. So as long as you never and I mean never plan on having a hardware failure it's a great laptop.

I can empathize with you because I feel your pain on the replacement offer. I sent my G2S in on 8/19/09. I waited for a week then I called Customer support and was told they had to wait for more mother boards to come in before the could fix my laptop. So i waited for another 10 days and received a email asking me if I wanted to accept a repacement G71Gx because of the long wait. I looked at the specs and most of it was better then my g2s except screen, BT, and and the combo drive. I thought about it for a couple min then I accepted the offer.

Now, unknown to me and ASUS customer service, the same day I accepted the offer is the same day they sent my "FIXED G2S" back to me . At first I was suprised because I was expecting a new laptop only to find out it was my old one. But then I was like cool I got my stuff back. So I fired up my G2S and found out that now my laptop is a chronic over heater and can barely run windows without the help of a laptop cooler and open bottom. Not to mention they also stripped the one main screw on the bottom thats connected to the mother board. So now with some crafty ingenuity I can only open it partway for fresh air.

Well by now I am very pissed so i give a call to customer service and tell them my laptop is over heating and what I had to do to fix it. The rep looks at a few screens and then asks me for my rma#. After reading a few notes they inform me that I was suppose to get a replacement and not my old one. Hmm.. so now they want me to send my old one back and wait for who knows how long to get this replacement laptop. I don't have another computer handy so I am trying to wait till they send the replacement. I really want the G71Gx and if They do send it to me before I send this one back, I will see if I can put this screen in the G71Gx.
