Thanks for the welcome, David. Trying to get the hang of this forum thing. First time ever on any forum. Do you have any suggestions on a computer?

depending on your needs and preferences, it's hard to recommend any laptop without these information
Try fill out the FAQ in the " What notebook should I buy" forum so we can better understand your situation :)

I haven't had any problems with the mic in or the built-in one. I've played Left 4 Dead using both and the only complaint I've had is that I sound robotic but that was from only 1 person and I've played lots of games and asked if I could be heard OK and that was the only complaint - and he said he could still understand me fine. I did turn the boost up all the way though - not sure if that had anything to do with it... but I also turned it down from all the way (30) to 20 when I had the "Robotic sounding" complaint and people say they still hear me fine.

Hi G71G owners, I'm about to purchase one soon. I'm very excited. :)
Here's what I gathered from reading all of the minor problems that have to be checked:
    -Web Cam not aligned
    -Clouding screen
    -dead pixel
    -fan sound during start up
    -keyboard flex?-not sure.

Please do correct my list if there's a mistake.
    Thanks in advance. :)

Only major problem is the fan sound on start up. I'm still awaiting news from Asus support. They are supposed to have their weekly meeting with the tech support in Taiwan. The representative that if its a hardware problem then all laptops will be recalled back to add a new part to resolve the fan problem. If its found to be a problem with the BIOS then it should be resolved through a download (although i doubt that its a bios problem). Well, I hope this helps for all those with the fan problem. Also don't try to fix the fan problem yourself since you can potentially void your warranty by removing the seal.

I fixed my LOUD FAN NOISE by adding a thin cardboard spacer.

along the edge of the metal fan casing near the clip (fan clip) next to the center screw(laptop center). spacer is in between the metal and the plastic casing in which the metal clips onto. unscrew two tiny screws, unclip the metal, slide in the thin spacer, clip on the metal, screw in the tiny screws, close lid up...The noise is gone.

Hope that help. my spacer was cut out of the backing of a legal notepad. Now that's low tech for you...LOL

    seriously this worked for me.

Hey I got a problem with my g71, and Im just wondering if someone can help me out :) Every time I change the power settings (manually and also when the computer gets unplugged from the electricity) it works for a couple of seconds and then the screen freezes and I have to restart it by leaving the power button pressed otherwise It wont change at all, what should I try before calling tech support?? (I dont want to call and hear that I have to send it to their service center for something that possibly could have been fixed here)

    thanks in advance

Yes, please do provide some photos (pictures are worth a thousand words ;))

I actually just experienced this sudden loud noise produced from the fan. It actually made my entire notebook vibrate quite a bit. What I did was I took the back panel out and using a can of compressed air, I just sprayed the fan for a good 30 seconds to make it spin; then another 30 seconds the other way. After that everything seemed to be fine. :)

Ok, i tried your method and it didn't work for me. I also took it further by drawing out full templets of the metal cover in hopes of adding more "suspension"; still doesn't really work. I have a feeling it's the fan itself causing this issue.

Hi everyone, I've been busy so just got around to making this post. I am now a owner of an Asus G71G-A2. This is not my first Asus, I also have a c90s and a eeepc 901. So far everything is good, the only problem is the start up fan sound. When I first got the system, it had the common speaker problem as well, but I was anticpating it and updated the realtek drivers. I have not had a problem with the audio ever since, works flawlessly and sounds great. For now the start up sound is an inconvenience, but I can live with it. I'm going to wait until there is a generally accepted solution. Oh a side note, I might want to add that I felt like installing the razer copperhead mouse drivers for the included mouse and was playing around with the settings. While testing out the settings I noticed a double clicking speed test area in the razer mouse software. What happed was that I started to click soo fast that it BSOD my system. I've tried it a couple of times and achieved the same results, so this is a warning to anyone that wants to mess with the double click speed of your mouse.

Congrats on your new purchase :)
Yes, the sound issue can be irritating. I have requested a fan replacement so I'll see if a new fan will make the difference. I haven't noticed the BSOD for the mouse settings. Have you tried reinstalling the mouse software and drivers?

    CPU upgrade

For those of you whom want to upgrade their (already powerful) stock T9400 CPU, the best CPU the G71G can support is the QX9300. A friend of mine has tested it and the G71 will recognize it and run stable. :)

In your power options in control panel, do you have Asus's power4gear power plan selected?

I have ASUS Standard Mode selected, and the other 2 options are High Performance and Power Saver, I'm a bit confused now, the software that I have is Turbo Gear and that was the one I reinstalled, now I checked on the recovery disk and there isnt any driver for power4gear, only the Turbo Gear, so is this the same program or am I missing something?? :s thanks

So it looks like the fan problem is more widespread than the low mic recording volume. I have a bad feeling that it's probably not a driver issue then, and more likely hardware (and not the mic itself since my headset mic is also affected).

Oh well, I'm about to head off to the other side of the world (Canada) for a few months, so I guess I'll get a chance to test out the global warranty :)

    Hey all,

I've had an A2 since late December. Was wondering what the general consensus was on Norton Internet Security, keep or remove. My thinking is the latter, especially given all the safeguards on IE these days.

Of course as I soon as I say that, I noticed that BIOS v410 is released, updated and microphone volume is better now!

Still have to have mic boost maxed out at 30% and without noise suppression it sounds like a jet engine taking off (guess it's the fan noise being picked up), also the acoustic echo cancellation has to be turned off otherwise I sound like an androgynous robot :)

I ditched it and Windows firewall, and use Comodo instead. Then again I only use IE for testing; Firefox + Adblock plus + NoScript is IMHO a more enjoyable and secure option than IE, of course YMMV

How do you flash the bios under Vista 64 on these things? The AFlash2 utility app they have listed won't run and there's nothing in the bios package other than the rom file.

I used WinFlash, it's on the driver DVD. I noticed that after the update I can flash directly from the BIOS now, not sure if that was an option before (didn't really look that hard though)

Color fading IS ANOTHER PROBLM with this laptop!! Im surprized no one mentioned that in this thread.

I have already sent my asus in 2 times (due to the fan sound) and they keep sending me back brand new g71g-a2 laptops with the same FAN issue and short lived color life. Now on my 3rd replacement, I can say without a doubt that the color fades after 2 weeks of use. I ofcourse auto power down the monitor when not in use, and to see the colors tint away slowly after such short usage really angers me.

After 6 months to a year Id expect this, but not in such a short period of time. Now my question is, what happens in 6 months? Will it be even more tinted?

I have played around with the color/vibrance settings, and it does hide the tint issue, but I shouldnt be doing this.

So to sum it up 3 new laptops from asus, none fixed, Fan still clicking away and the color tints after a few weeks. (btw id love to use the above process mentioned to fix the fan, but that will break my warantee, and this computer is going to have a looot of issues down the road.)

I sometimes feel the positive reviews I find about this laptop series are are really ASUS reps pretending to be customers. Taiwanes are tricky tricky.

Color fading/tinting? I've noticed tinting at startup before but this is due to a combination of Power settings and the Splendid utility that is used to change the color scheme of the laptop. You sometimes will see the splash screen for splendid at startup but not always. I had thought there was an issue until I realized the above combination had been playing tricks on me.

yes that splendid auto color management is annoying. I always reformatted the disk, and took all that bloatware off, so I don't think theres any software making it tint. In all 3 cases (laptops they sent back to me) the first few weeks the color was normal too. Maybe I am looking too closely, but the color looks tinted/faded a bit.

Hi, So I tried to post in the "what laptop should I get for school" thread. Although the couple suggestions I got were good ideas. I already had thought of the G71G A2. Then I finally discovered this thread yesterday and read through most of it.

This is the first laptop. First compness for years. So it's pretty much a desktop replacement. After hearing all the pros and cons. I'm still highly in love with it. I'm only going for the A2 for the extra 130 gigs.

Well the question I got...I live with 3 cats and 2 dogs in a really small place. I can't stress this enough...Hair everywhere...No matter what! I don't wear to much black or any clothing that would magnatize it to it making it into a whole new design...Even my Sidekick ID has hair all in it's scroll ball and some other places...

Which is why I'd like to know if anyone else has nearly a similar problem. And if so, will it effect the laptop a whole lot!? Heh...don't get me wrong! I'm gonna treat this like my baby! But I'm pretty sure somehow...someway...hair will make it's presence known!

Thanks a lot! And have a good day or night.

I do feel the LCD screen on my G71G-A1 is under par also as I'm experience definite clouding and screen artifacts that can still be seen on screen even after I've moved the object away from the original position. (ex. I can still see small multiple windows after I'ved moved them, it looks like it's possibly a refresh problem but I will contact Asus Notebook Support to see what they recommend).

After the gentle screen wipe, there is still a visible cloud on the right, and the cloud returns all the time. There is flex on the top lid that causes pressure to press down on the LCD screen which brings the cloud back for me.

I've had W7 on for about a week now. It installed very quickly and flawlessly, recognizing all of the drivers, but lost some functionality with exterior lighting. The look and feel is so much better than Vista SP1, but I had ran into a few issues:

    1) I had to update to the NVIDIA Laptop Display driver to prevent W7 from crashing (it rebooted everytime I closed the lid on the display).

    2) I ran 3DMark06 and received a slightly lower score than the one that David had in his review. Is anyone else getting a better score in W7 over Vista SP1?

    My Windows7 3DMark06 Score

    3DMark Score 8246
    SM2.0 Score 3646
    HDR/SM3.0 Score 3495
    CPU Score 2303
    Game Score 0 Points
    GT1 - Return To Proxycon 30.44006348 FPS
    GT2 - Firefly Forest 30.3284359 FPS
    CPU1 - Red Valley 0.727868199 FPS
    CPU2 - Red Valley 1.166226029 FPS
    HDR1 - Canyon Flight 30.34636879 FPS
    HDR2 - Deep Freeze 39.5500946 FPS

    3) I'm still attempting to find a flawless ISO mounting utility (tried the recommended PISMO but was not satisfied). I'm attempting to try Virtual CloneDrive now.

Has anyone been using lcdhype 0.6.0.5 and having problems with the megascript posted by predator? I found out that the overclocker screen has some problems displaying the GPU and CPU temp values and fps at the correct positions because the original script was written for the G1S LCD screens which were 128 x 32 whereas the g71g uses a screen that is bigger (256 x 32). Would appreciate it if someone who is good at C++ scripting to help me figure out how to fix this problem.

    Thanks

So...I was planning on the G71G A2...but on Xotic it isn't listed anymore...I haven't went to GentechPC yet. Does anyone know if they just stopped the process of there being a G71G A2!? If the Q1 is the new deal...I guess I'm gonna go with that one...since it's pretty much the same price and got a Quad up in it. Thanks!

It doesn't matter whether it's the A1 or A2 since the only difference between the two are the HDD and optical drive (both of which 3DMark06 do not use for benchmarking).
Standard/overclock mode will make a difference, however, the difference is nominal since the benchmark stresses primarily the GPU.

The reason behind the lower benchmark scores on Windows 7 lies here:

"Scrambling through my notes, I confirmed on October 27th, during PDC ‘08, that Steven Sinofsky very clearly said:

'The beta is going to be feature complete. It’s going to be pretty good. It’s not going to be final. It’s going to be a beta. So we’re still not ready for performance benchmarking.'

OMG that is the same exact thing that happens to me! When I play Crisis and use the w,a,s,d keys to strafe the screen automatically minimizes to half screen and a little box appears in the top left hand corner of the screen. Meanwhile, dropping the framerate by heaps! Although, mine is not exactly in chinese.. it's just a chat box. This also happens when I press caps lock whilst playing!

Frustrating!! Did you fix the problem?

This is a very common issue on all laptops. Simply go to your Regional & Language Option in your Control Panel and under the Keyboard and Languages tab, click on "Change Keyboards" -> remove all the installed services except for English. Then, under the same Keyboard and Languages tab, click on Install/uninstall languages and do the same thing there.

I just got my G71G-Q1 yesterday, (2.0 GHz Q9000 Quad core) all seems well, but for some reason the turbo extreme / overclocking options have been disabled.

The consoles are there, but the overclock option menus (on the performance icon in the systray) are blank, & the direct console has the "performance" area completely greyed over with a R.O.G. logo in its place.

What happened? is there a hidden setting I need to unlock or something?

What happens when you press on the Performance mode button (Does it cycle through Power saving, Standard, or Overclocking)?

The G71G doesn't use direct console for overclocking, instead, it uses turbogear.
