Well, I managed to put off the order until Friday so I could go over some last minute things, and of course hopefully read David's review lol. The issue with clouding and the memory being downclocked are kind of concerning me a bit. The screen clouding much more so than the latter. If I had what I saw in those screenshots posted on the pics thread I would send it back no question, so Im a bit hesitant all of a sudden. Seems like I read of some others that had that issue on the g71 series.

As for the memory, my understanding is that it only downclocks when using the Direct Console to overclock the cpu? Or is it downclocked all the time, unless you mess about in the BIOS?

It's downclocked all the time unless you disable the turbo gear in the bios.

I also have the "clouding" but it's only visible from an angle when you have a completely black screen. It's similar to my (slight) concerns about the black levels and it really looks more like light leakage than clouding. I think the LCD just has a hard time keeping all of the light blocked from the dual lamps.

Well.. just a few thing to add about my G71G-A1.. the cloud is really bad.. 4 example if you are watching a movie, you know the night scenes are pretty much always and if you get in the wrong angle.. you'll see half of the screen white.. if 2 people r watching.. 1 has to be a little bit at the right and the other at the left.. well the one in the left wont see anything  same thing with games...
So yeah of course I'm sending back this thing, plus I have a blue pixel and a fan came broken.. so it sounds really loud and like something gets hits with every spin.. so you can imagine the type of sound.. T_T !!! for about 5 to 10 min everytime I turn it on.

I notice something.. I dont know why but while playing a combination of the letters a,s,d,w, ctrl and space creates like a little window with chinese words in the top of the screen and makes the game, from 45 frames to 4 frames !! like pictures! dunno how to eliminate that stupid thing.. its like a dictionary of chinese of something.. also when trying to save a picture.. I dont know what I press but it save all my pictures with chinese word.. this thing drives me crazy..

Yes, I think you are one of the unlucky ones that received a defective screen. My screen does not display such extreme washed out patches and definitely no dead/stuck pixels.

As for the chinese characters that appear on your screen, you have 2 options. Go to your control panel -> Regional and Keyboard options -> keyboards and languages -> change keyboards -> and remove all chinese services in the "installed services" box.

    OR.....

    learn chinese :) :p

So, am I going to notice the effects of the memory being downclocked? Turbo Gear is what allows you to overclock the cpu isnt it? Or am I thinking of something else? I'd really rather not disable Turbo Gear if thats the case.

Yup, Turbo Gear is the CPU overclocking utility for the G71G. Direct Console is the CPU overclocing utility for the G50 series (on the G71G Direct Console, it only allows you to change the lighting effects and OLED customizations).

All in all, it would be best to leave your ram clocked at 667mhz and overclock your CPU for better performance. You won't be able to tell the difference between a 667mhz and 800mhz ram.

I also have a bit of clouding on my screen...
Not very noticeable but its there. I see it if i look at the screen from the sides.
Is there a way to fix it? What causes it?

Another issue i've been having is with the Alone in the Dark that came with the laptop: the bloody game crashes everytime i try to go chnage the display settings.

I finally took the plunge and ordered the G71G-A2 early this morning from Newegg. It looks like it will either be here right before Christmas, or right after. Either way I will post and give you guys some feedback when it arrives! This will be my first notebook, so Im excited to get things set up lol.

Just saw your good review a moment ago David. Looks like it should perform well for a good 3-4 years. Which would be lovely. Ah, now to read and research on everything I need to do with a fresh notebook after unboxing.

    I got my G71G - A2 a few days ago, ordered from GentechPC.com
After a few days i'm having a problem with fan, when i boot the laptop the fan makes scratch sound like its touching something, horrible noise. This noise dissapears after 2-3 minutes.
Maybe somebody know if i can fix it by myself or i just need to go to ASUS service?

Well, I have received it! G71G-A2. So far I am really digging it. Its a lot nicer looking in person than in screenshots imo. My first time using Vista, and its taking some getting used to. I've been trying to manually uninstall bloat and things, and I kind of screwed up my Norton.

Still trying to figure that one out. Im using NIS 2009, which is what I want, but I deleted a norton installer folder last night thinking it was remnants of what came preinstalled and screwed up mine. So like an idiot, after nothing was working I decided to try to uninstall it and start over. The Uninstall listing under add/remove programs wouldnt let me because of the folder I deleted, and then it deleted the listing to uninstall it. So long story short, I restored the folder from the Recycle Bin like I should have in the first place, and now I have no way of uninstalling Norton. No uninstall links anywhere for it. On the bright side its working great, its just messing with my OCD that the uninstall options are gone. I dont suppose anyone knows how to fix that? lol

Other than that, and a minor issue Im having with volume, things are peachy. Ill start installing some games tomorrow and testing those out )

Well, exact same thing happen to me.. but mine was for at least 5 to 10 minutes and then gradually stopped. It is in fact a horrible and loud noise.. so what I finally did, was to send the thing back some days ago.. cause I also had a bad pixel and very bad screen.. The few fist times I call ASUS, they told me just to send the laptop and they would try to fix the fan and replace the screen.. but I didnt want that.. I wanted a completely new laptop so finally after calling a 4th time someone told me to send everything, and that they would send me a new one.. Just hope they do it and dont send me a fixed one. Kinna hard to tell xD

    Anyway.. maybe this will help.

EDIT: can someone give me the link of the review made by David?? couldnt find it :D

Actually i fixed it today. I opened the laptop and powered it so i could hear where exactly fan making nose. Fan touched in some place the aluminium disclousure, so i fixed it with a screwdriver, and no more noise :)

BTW This laptop is amazing, but speakers could be better.

Does the G71G come with subwoofers? I read in the spec sheet that it has 4 speakers with subwoofers? can anyone verify this? Thanks.

    Hi david,
does that mean the sound quality of the G71V is better than the G71G? is it still with 4 speakers? I thought G71G was an updated version of the G71V having a better GPU. also does it come in other colors? or just red?
    thanks.

I was wondering if you have any details on how exactly you fixed it. I am having this same problem unfortunately horrible loud fan noise when booting cold. It makes it into the OS before the fan kicks on but about 2 minutes in the fan kicks off and sounds horrible for 5-10 minutes. Takes some tilting to get it to stop.

Even worse I already returned my first G71G-A1 and the second has the same problem.

Yes, there's still 4 speakers on the G71G. The main difference between the that and the G71V is the quad core CPU, subwoofer, 9700m GT GPU, DDR3 ram and TV tuner on the G71G. Unfortunately, there's only one color option.

Open the bay where the fan located with a csrewdriver. Almost all the fan is visible, but the fan ends are under aluminium cover, this is what makes the noise. Take slim screwdeiver and insert it between the fan and the aluminium cover. Put the middle of the screwdriver on your finger (otherwise you can break the fan) and push up the cover a little for all perimeter. It's perfectly solved my problem. Hope this will help you too.

Sorry for my bad english guys :)

I guess since this is the "G71 Owner's Lounge", any question(s) okay? (Don't want to hijack, I mean...)

I bought an HP HDX16 awhile back, intending to use it for "light" gaming, but being a gaming newbie, and after doing some research (after I already purchased the HDX16, naturally), I realized there really isn't such a thing as "light" gaming. What there is, is "occasional" gaming (which would describe me), and "hardcore" gaming. (Simplifying for brevity here.)

IOW, a computer needs to run at a certain performance level to run games at an enjoyable rate (FPS, graphics quality, etc.). While the HDX16 is a very nice machine, HP rightly terms it an "entertainment" notebook, not a "gaming" notebook. My specs on it are:

    -Core 2 Duo T9600
    -4GB DDR2 RAM
    -512MB nVidia 9600M GT
    -320GB 5400rpm SATA HD
    -16" Brightview 1920x1080p screen
    -Vista Ultimate 64-bit

What I'm getting to here is, would the G71G-A1 (or -A2) be a better choice to dedicate as a gaming machine? I know the G71 has a slightly slower CPU, but a better GPU and faster HD (the HP didn't have an option for a 7200 HD when I ordered it). And ASUS is calling it a gaming machine.

I just have trouble when I look at a Dell XPS1730, and see a high price, coupled w/last year's Santa Rosa platform. I've seen a couple other high-end, high-priced gaming laptops w/older tech also. Do most laptop gamers not care about the newer platforms, only about such things as dual-graphics cards, RAID disks, etc.? Because I can't figure this out.

Basically, I want to dedicate one system to just gaming, so I can install and attach all the fun gaming gear I already bought. What do you all think--is the G71G the way to go? If so:

    1) Should I get the A1, or spring for the extra $250 and get the A2? (The only difference is the 500GB vs. 640GB HD, right? 500GB seems like plenty, but you guys tell me.)

    2) I was sort of ready to order it, and then I've been reading about this horrible fan screeching problem. While I don't have a problem cracking open the case of the notebook and adjusting the fan housing (which sounds like the problem, from what I've read), would that void the warranty? Or is ASUS more forgiving about that sort of thing, being an enthusiast's company? IOW, should I order now (while there's a rebate), or wait? The rebate's up at the end of the month, so I'd have to decide pretty quick.

    3) Are there any other problems? I read about a "popping" sound coming from the speakers--is this happening to everyone, or just few?

So fill me in, guys: is the the low-cost gaming laptop I've been searching for?

    @ oldcrank

The CPUs (T9600 and T9400) will have minimal performance difference when it comes to gaming. The most important component is still the GPU. Benchmarks may tell you otherwise, but in real life, a 300mhz difference is small potatoes. Keep in mind that the G71 can also be overclocked to ~2.7-2.8ghz using Asus's turbogear utility if you really feel you need the extra speed.

Dual graphics cards are nice, but it's high price doesn't really justifies its slight better performance. Again Benchmarks will show eye-popping scores, but most games in today's market still can't utilize SLI GPUs.

RAID is a feature that I particularly like and having that would be a nice added bonus. It doesn't really help during game play, but loading any software can be faster when the HDDs are set in RAID-0. Unfortunately, the G71G doesn't have that feature - only the G71V and G50 series does.

New platforms are always more desirable, and I'm sure Dell and other companies will have new models coming out soon.

    1. I'd get the A2. Especially since it comes with a free 250gb external hard drive (only from gentechpc i believe). Another difference is that the A2 has a blu-ray optical drive.

    2. I never had an issue with the fan noise. The only way to void your warranty is if you remove the sticker from the screw that holds the CPU/GPU heatsink down, so you should be fine in that department.

    3. No sound popping from my G71G-A1. People have reported slight discoloration with their screens, but have solved it by applying pressure from the back.

All in all, it's one of the best budget gaming laptops to date. The brightness and contrast of the screen are also amazing. You don't often see dual-lamp LCD screens in laptops. They are usually more expensive and at this price range even I couldn't resist.

Actually, the cloud is solved by putting pressure on the screen itself - i.e., simply clean your screen with the included wipe and with light pressure, the cloud is literally wiped away.

I bought this laptop (Asus G71G-A2) about a month ago. I had a problem which sounds very similar to the one quoted extensively on this thread. On booting the laptop made a loud noise and wouldn't stop for about 5 minutes. I think this link resolves the problem (well it did for me):

    http://support.asus.com/faq/faq.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

It tells you to go into BIOS settings on booting which you do by pressing F2 alot. Then select Boot Settings Configuration, then Logo Sound Volume then choose Mute to disable POST sound.

I wasn't sure that this would work but now it no longer makes this loud noise so I assume that that solved the problem.

may I ask if you can upgrade G71G GPU to the 9800GTS since the G70-SG's equipped with that kind of GPU? If yes, is there a big difference in terms of performance compared to the 9800GS? TIA :)

Would also like to know this.

    G71V-X2
Also have 2 problems I was hoping somebody would have then answers to.
FIrst is that my 2 left speakers constantly make static. It's only the left 2, and they still play music fine, just has this darn static. THe static carries over to my left ear when I plug in headphones as well, so I dont think it's the speakers. It's driving me crazy.

The other problem would be my online games. I love tf2, and get around 80fps on average, but for some reason whenever a friend brings over his laptop and hooks into our wireless, my laptop gets ridiculous lag. Frames drop to nothing , then the game comes back, then lag, repeat. He can play the game fine, we play in the same server, so I know it's not a crappy connection there. Is there an issue with the wireless that I'm not aware of?

EDIT: IT's the hotkeys, the bloody hot keys. WHY ASUS!?!?

I had to completely disable the bloody language bar. In game when moving around, the keybord layout would be changed through the hotkeys being toggeled through the course of my playing. Then when holding any key for more than a second, the entire game would freeze until I let go of the key. Then when I would try to type in game, it would be in friggin chineese. I have no idea why they set these as hotkeys(ctrl shift as one), because some of them get toggled during the course of normal playing.
I disabled the language bar and deleted the hotkeys for changing the keyboard layout, and everything seems fine now.

Went: Control panel-regional/language settings-Keyboards/languages-advanced key settings, then disabled it there.

IDK if mine was just wierd like that. It only seemed to happen in TF2, so IDK, lol.

I have the start-up fan clicking issue on my G71G-A2 - mine lasts for about 20 seconds...would be nice to be able to get rid of it...strange to me if it was a mechanical problem (fan hitting enclosure) that it would eventually go away.

I don't understand why there is even a language bar at all--can anyone explain this? If you pick US English when first setting up the system, why--unless you are bilingual or a translator for the UN--on earth would I need a utility to switch between English and Chinese?

More to the point, how do I get rid of this frakking language bar for good?

As you mentioned, the language tool bar is there for people whom require different and/or multiple languages. You can easily add/remove any language to your liking by going into your control panel -> regional and language options -> languages and make your selection there in the text services and input languages.

I got my g71g from xoticpc a couple days ago...

very very nice notebook except two problems:
o scratching fan on cold boot (may fix later as described in thread)
o popping noise from speakers every 10-60 seconds
o DirectConsole 2.0 doesn't control lights via sound as it says it does

I can get the popping to stop by uninstalling the realtek drivers and installing vistas hd audio drivers. However, then the audio ports fail to work and other features such as equalizer do not work. I wrote to both asus and realtek about this and no helpful response so far. I think the issue is in the drivers... but want to know from all of you other owners, whether or not you have the audio popping... please let me know either way. If you do - you might want to open up a ticket with asus and realtek also. but PLEASE let me know so I can see if it is a small group or almost everyone. A note is I am using 64 bit vista.

I took out NIS because it is dog slow and steals too many resources. I use Kasperksy Internet Security and you can usually get it Free after rebate and it supports up to 3 computers. It has found viruses that no other program found...

I like the laptop playing WoW while connecting to a big screen tv... nice. The display works easily. I have NO problems with the LCD display that the laptop comes with.. its amazing.

The sound is a bit tinny considering it doesn't have a subwoofer - that was a my only disappointment other than the popping noise. Again, not worried about the fan - that can easily be modified.

I fear a little that the doors on the side for covering the ports might at sometime break off... they seem solid - but anything that opens can get caught and snap off in my experience.

The mouse is really nice - I use it on anything that is around and it works well - even on a bed comforter.

I miss the quad core of my desktop unit - but not that much. It is just when I am trying to do 10 things at once.

The wireless seems a little hard to set up with a tomato firmware based router... the wpa2 personal keys don't work. I don't understand that yet - I think it is tomato though because it connects fine with my 11n router from Dlink.

I wish the OLED display was more customizable....

It is fast, good screen, easy to type on, easy to control, lots of options etc. By far, with again the exception of the popping noise, etc. is the best laptop I have owned. The color is cool too - it looks much cooler in person than on pictures.

Okie dokie - let me know your thoughts and about your sound please.

    Michael

Check the various OLED threads - switching to LCDHype makes it infinitely customizable (with some scripts in the forums for starting off with).

The 9800GTS is a desktop card. Did you mean something else?

If it's the 9800M GTS, then no, you can't upgrade it. In fact, you can't upgrade the GPU at all for the G71G notebook.

BLAST! I recollect reading somewhere the G50 was able to be upgraded, why not the 71?

Besides the fact it's soldered in.

Though it never actually bothered me (and that suprises me because I'm pretty anal), I can confirm that these new drivers do indeed squash the POP bug!

So wipe the screen to get rid of the clouds and install these drivers to get rid of the pop. Looks like the only issues remaining are truly hardware related - clicking fan and mismounted webcam.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Hey, I installed the 2.14 driver from Realtek and the pop bug did indeed disappear. However, I had more problems after installing these new audio drivers. First of all, my realtek audio manager disappeared from my control panel. Furthermore, the headphone jack no longer works. Did you guys also get this problem?

Finally, the fan hardware problem is currently being resolved. I called Asus tech today and they still need to confirm whether Taiwan will make new parts to the machine to fix the fan problem or not. I'll let you guys know when the techie calls me. BTW, their technical support service is pretty awesome. Really friendly. Can't believe he called me just to tell me what he found it.

I sill have the audio manager with my 2.14 install. Did you make sure to run the install twice? The first run only uninstalls the old drivers (at which point you will get the generic vista drivers which behave like you are seeing). You actually need to run the installer a second time to get the updated drivers installed (don't ask me why they don't automatically run it after the first reboot).

I did not check the Control Panel itself but assume it is there because the icon is in my tray. I am not in front of the machine right now to say for sure, but I did do the double install as indicated (1 for un, 1 for in) and headphones work fine.

I also have fan noise on boot. Will be interesting to hear the "official" way to solve this is :)

If anyone else solves the problem with low microphone recording level (both inbuilt and jack) please post here!

Just another question about the audio driver installation. I was wondering whether I could delete the folder I downloaded the audio drivers from realtek after the install. Will it screw up my audio drivers if i deleted the folder that was unzipped containing the audio install drivers?

    thanks

Hi every one a newbie here. I have also read in places that it has a sub. On the Superwarehouse.com and on EXcaliberpc.com both state in the specs that there are 4 speakers and a sub. But if not oh well. I'm very interested in this notebook. Been shopping around town and online. So far what first caught my eye at Best Buy was the G50vt-x1 then the G50vt-a2 but both for the 15" screens then i saw that the G71g-a2 is only about in an 1 1/2" wider and longer, and that it is sportin wuxga screen. So as of yet i think this will be my first notebook purchase. Unless there is something comparable to this for cheaper. Really digging the looks and features though.

    Welcome to the forums!

I believe only the G71V has a subwoofer (i think), but the G71G doesn't (for sure).
