Thorttle Stop didn't seem to work for me either. I may be doing something wrong with the setup. So I'm interested in what others have to say. Tagged..

BD PROCHOT box must be unchecked for the throttlestop to work. That should help!

    Should work now!

    Thanks! I'm trying GTA4 now.

EDIT: GTA4 still freezes as hell

EDIT2: I checked again now, and it works well! It has to be something weird :) So it works! Thank you!

Here is a helpful link if you run into some problems: Asus Self-diagnostics
Just pick Notebook from the list then the problem related to you.
It will walk you threw some questions to help you find the answers for the problem at hand.
Not really something I need most of the time but might help others find some answers.

Guys I have question..... Since SB has integrated graphics and nvidia has Optimus technology, can I use somehow Optimus and switch between GPUs? It would extend using G53SW without AC plugged in :p

No, within the 400M series Optimus is only available for lower end GPUs.

Strange that we are not able to use Optimus on our laptop w/ 460M, but it can be used with a 580M GPU. Optimus Technology

Perhaps obtaining the Alienware M17x 580M driver would allow Optimus?
To bad I don't have my G53SW in hand I'd give it a try. I had thought about this before but never got around to doing any testing.

Edit: after doing a little more research I'm not sure it possible.
    Found here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-460m-60hz-vs-3d-battery-life-460m-120hz.html
Maybe I'm not quite understanding what's being said, but I know the G53SW has nVidia 3D vision and only 60Hz
still looks like it should be possible but maybe more trouble than its worth. So I'm guessing this is the reason its disabled?

I wouldn't buy the laptop if it had optimus. I had a laptop that had it and found it was a pain in the butt. Sometime optimus would kick the dedicated gpu into gear for my games and sometimes it wouldn't. Making my games run super slow. From what I read, Asus has disabled the integrated gpu on the i7 in the 53sw. So even if you found drivers from alienware or someplace else it most likely won't work as the igp has been turned off from a hardware level. Which intel states can be done. If I can find the source I discovered this I will post it. But I remember reading about this.

Yes I agree, 5+ hours would be nice. But most people didn't buy this laptop for battery life, (I know I didn't) which is still good at around 3 hours. Most bought it for the powerhouse that it is. Honestly, if you want battery life, get a netbook, they are under $300 and will get like 8+ hours on battery and alot of them now have dual core atoms w/hyper-threading. (I saw one at wal-mart for like $278.) Amazon may be cheaper though. Only downfall is ram in the netbooks, but if you upgrade them to 2GB it's usually good enough for what your using them for anyhow. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'll second that, sometimes compromises have toi be made and, honestly, the gaming performance with "only" 3 hours of battery life at THIS price point is barely a compromise

My G53SW seems to get pretty fair battery life. Have seen over 4 hours, but it wasn't doing much, plus set to power saving mode.
I leave it on battery every now and then just to let it run all the way down, then fully charge it. Some say that helps the battery life.
If I'm gaming its plugged in, actually it stays plugged up most of the time since I mainly use it like a desktop.
I think its been out of the house once or twice. lol Actually since I got the G53SW I use it more than my desktops and I have many.
    Ranging from 2600K, 980X, E5645, E5620, 960, 2x I7 860's, X3380, Q9650, Q9550, Q6600 all overclocked 3 on water all others on high end air cooling.
Mostly all those do now is set and do Folding@Home 24/7. I do game on some of them from time to time. The one with the 2xGTX480's "2600K" or the 980X with 3xGTX260's.

So battery life is not really a big deal for me since I have a U50F I can use on the road, witch is much lighter, plus much better battery life.
But I do like trying to do stuff other than overclocking with my hardware such as getting Optimus running on hardware it shouldn't. lol
I find stuff like that very interesting to try weather it works out or fails.
It just gives me something to do with my time.

But ya dragonwolf8504 I think I read the same thing about it being shut off at the hardware lever now that you said something.
Most likely a bios option that's hidden and disabled or was never added to the bios in the first place.
Reading more on the net I see there where quite a few reports of problems when Optimus was enabled with the 460M.
Plus as other reported it didn't really help much if any with extending the battery life.

Exactly! my old computer barely got to 2.5 hours and it was nowhere close to my G53SW power-wise.

And just FYI you should try to have your computer plugged in all the time. COntrary to popular belief, using up all of the battery and then charging it up when you could just be plugged in is derimental. Laptop batteries can only do that (fully charging) a certain number of times (called cycles) and it's usually 500. I also normally take the battery out wen it's plugged in but I'm really paranoid (my old computer's battery had about 10 minutes by the end of it's life), in reality having the battery in and being plugged in while on full-charge doesn't harm the battery; modern batteries don't overcharge (again, a very common belief...)

Ya after reading some of the reports on the internet "problems w/ Optimus" I could see why Asus may have took the road to not have it enabled on this laptop, less problems with less customer support having to be provided.
I seen one reply from a Nvidia programer about looking into the problems others were having with Optimus and 460M turns out that was his last reply.
So I take it Nvidia was never able to work all the problems out. Like so many good things you see them use to boost sells of hardware "not just Nvidia" get dropped soon after it comes out and get swept under the rug.

Honestly Optimus seems like a marketing gimmick IMO. I've never actually used it but as you said I haven't heard great things about it. The concept does sound great though, so I really hope they can approach it better in the future.

Oh! and something I forgot to add in my battery rant is this. It's a link to everything yo need to know about batteries. There's A LOT of information in the site, if you're lazy skimming through only the link I provided should suffice.

I can understand the wanting to experiment. The biggest thing I was saying was don't get your hopes up. Also yeah, optimus sounded great on paper. And if implemented would have been awesome! I would have loved to have the best of both worlds. But honestly as someone stated, a 3+ hour battery life for this laptop is pretty sweet. Unfortunately, nvidia dropped the ball on optimus and now I look at it as a marketing gimmick as well.

Changing the subject a bit. Does anyone experience an extreme drop in FPS when playing on battery? Assassin's Creed Brotherhood gets 45-50 while plugged in but when I'm on battery I get a max of 25... It's the same for most games I've played

Unfortuntely, that is normal. The GPU will never run at full clocks on battery. It's by design.

It makes sense that the graphics card doesn't work at 100% on battery but the drop in perfornce is simply too much... That's probably what I find most annoying about this computer :(

Maybe the vcard can be overclocked a little to make up for some of the FPS loss while on battery? I'm sure OC will drop your battery time some, but about everything is a trade off. I use MSI Afterburner as a test and was able to OC some. I don't use a OC on any of my vcards for gaming, just for benchmarks for Hbot scores or folding@home. Stock clocks are normally enough for my gaming needs.

    2 Questions.

Firstly, whenever I turn off the LCD using the fn + f7 keys, the LCD seems to be turned off. But if there is a source of bright light behind you, you will notice that the LCD isn't really turned off, it just goes dark. Is there a way to turn it off completely? I hardly ever turn off my laptop so this is the only thing I do religiously.

Next, I did not install Power4Gear (asus bloatware). Does that mean that my laptop is not working to its full potential (thing performance setting on Power4Gear) when I game?

    Thanks in advance

I would check my own screen but I don't have my own computer right now. However, that may be the way it works.

As for Power4Gear I highly recommend installing it. It doesn't bloat your computer too much plus it lets you change the power settings with just a button on the keyboard. If you don't want to install it you could just as easily use windows default High Performance battery setting is basically the same. SO to answer your question more directly: Your computer will be working at full potential even if you don't install Power4Gear. But I do recommend installing it.

I upgraded my wireless card to the Intel 6230, and haven't really noticed too much of a difference, but the Bluetooth is better than the old card. I'd like to increase the range of my wireless, and have looked into antennas. Have any of you guys done anything like this, and do you guys have any recommendations?

    Was looking into this one.
Amazon.com: Laptop Notebook Wifi Bluetooth WWAN/EVDO/HSDPA Broadband Internal Antenna: Electronics

Also, I've been looking to buy a spare battery, for if I need more than 2.5-3 hours of battery life, but I can only find it available on sites that look shady for 100+ dollars. Anyone know a good place to find these?

    Thanks in advance.

About a month has gone by, and I love love love this laptop. There's just one thing that is driving me crazy- no, it's INFURIATING me. The touchpad.

Is there anyway to disable tap-to-click? This thing has gone rogue, and any re-positioning of my finger registers as a click. It's driving me bonkers, and I can't find advanced settings for the touchpad to save my life.

EDIT: Bah, I literally found it seconds after posting this. Should have looked harder. :p

I'm in the US, so it's fine, but it's still over 100 dollars, 140 actually. I'd like a spare battery, but not for that much money. I wonder why these batteries are so much more expensive than other batteries for other laptops.

Woah, that says it's an even bigger battery, 6600mAh from the default 5200mAh, and after shipping it would be 80 dollars instead of 100+. Seems kinda too good to be true. They use paypal, so I suppose if the site is shady, I would have that protection. If I end up buying I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I got my matted screen from here since I hated the glossy screen that came with it. I don't believe Asus will provide you with a matted screen. Just keep in mind there's two screws on the inner lip of the screen on the bottom near the hinge.

I tried searching and no luck....
Anyway I just got a G53SW and bought a stick of RAM for it...I figured with 4 Dimm's ASUS would've ran 3x2GB, but to my surprise they ran a 4GB and 2GB.

My question is, what DIMM slots mirror each otehr for dual channel? I mean under the keyboard is one slot, then on the bottom is 2 more and I'm sure the other is barried underneath.

I'm making the assumption the dimm that's burried and the DIMM that was populated (the bottom DIMM...closer to the motherboard) are meant for dual channel...and the other 2 will be dual channel (the one furthest away from the keyboard and the one directly under the keyboard).

    Can anyone confirm this?

Yes the 2 already populated is one dual channel the open/free 2 slots are is the other dual channel.
Get CPUZ it will show you on the memory tap its running in dual channel.
I put CPUZ on every computer I touch, weather its mine or a clients.
Its just so useful for getting the specs and configuration info, w/ simply a small footprint of space taken.

I experience some dips in GPU usage after overclocking my GPU. For example, the frame rate usually hovers around 33 to 37 during a typical BF3 game, then suddenly the far rate would dip to 20 to 22 for about 5 to 7 seconds, then climb back up again.

It happens every 10 to 15 mins. Anyone knows what is going on? Thanks in advance.

If its not doing this at stock clocks on the GPU then the OC may be just a tad to high. Try lowing the OC just a little as you may have passed the upper limit of its OC ability.
I've done a bit of OCing in my day and have seen this many times where I reached the upper limit of a OC then went above it and lose performance/score in benchmarks.
Many things come into play when you OC, other components may get bottlenecked, may need more voltage, heat can cause throttling and many other things.

Hi everyone, I just got myself a G53SW-XN1 and am very happy with it.

I noticed however, that the touchpad is acting very weird (jumps around when tapped, fixed after reboot). After a few minutes searching, i found this fix and it seems pretty simple.

My question is does it void your warranty at all?? i.e. does it involve tearing any warranty sticker?
    Any link to useful video?

    Thanks and Cheers everyone :D

I would call them and find out; however, their support is pretty bad so if you can avoid it, don't send it in. They can take forever, break things that weren't broken, and not even fix the problem.

If they say it voids the warranty, maybe you could try to still do it, but in a way were they can't tell you did it. There is no warrenty sticker to break under the touch pad, or in any area you would be working in that fix.

Thanks for your response, so which part has the warranty seal? Does adding RAM/HDD/SSD involve tampering any seal?

RAM and HDDs won't void your warranty.

Honestly, I opened up the laptop at least 10 times, and never saw a seal, but I really wasn't looking for one. I added an ssd, and replaced the wireless card, but had to unhook the touchpad, and the other things under the keyboard, to be able to reach the rest.

Like tijo said, the warranty won't be voided by upgrading you ram and hdd, but they won't fix it if that is the source of the problem.

When you replace the fourth RAM stick I believe there's a seal you have to break to get to it, I only had mine for a couple days though, so I don't remember all that well.

If the G53s are like the G73s, the only warranty seal will be on the CPU heatsink.

I opened it up. No warranty seal. ASUS RMA used to be good but now its bad for some reason... IT TOOK THEM 30 DAYS TO GET MY LAPTOP FIXED. My previous 2 RMAs went through smooth, one week turnaround. The last one was just horrible, no information until the last min.

do you suggest me to buy this with gtx460 instead of the newer g53sx with gtx 560 ? i can find the G53SW-IX069V (1366x768) at 940€.

    Thank you so much
