i think its a memory issue. try removing some of the RAM to figure out which one is broken. or try to run memtest

Following up from my previous post, the source of my problem was the HD. Luckily I didn't have to send my entire computer back to RMA, sending only the 750GB back for replacement. Which FYI is now being sent to the CA facility and not the one in Indiana.

In its absence I purchased a Intel 510 Series SSD and followed the clean install procedures outlined in the Asus Gaming Forum for the G53SX G73SX. (Not the same model, but close enough!)

In the end, it was totally worth it to get a clean install on an SSD. The lack of bloatware and faster speed makes me feel crazy for running it stock in the first place. When asus sends me back the 750GB i'm going to stick it in Bay 2 and use it only for storage.

And BTW for anyone thats going to be installing a new HD - it is scary the first time you dissemble your laptop. But after that the process is no more challenging then working with a regular desktop machine.

cos the fan are behind & not under the laptop

just wondering will the cooler still be needed ?

even though the fans are at the back, that doesn't mean heat wont spread on the table or any surface you put your laptop on.

there will still be some heat spreading under your laptop. And I believe the air source is down there in the middle. I think adding a cooler would really help achieve a cooler air intake instead of having some of the heat that already went out just go back in again.

So yeah, if you ask me i think it would probably help depending on the choice of cooler. But that's just me. what you think?

    A noob question:

Is the Bluetooth module integrated into the wireless card or is it separate?

The reason why i'am asking this is because my laptop does not have Bluetooth and i was wondering if buying another wireless card (Intel 6205 or Intel 6300) will add the Bluetooth.

I believe it's seperate because Wi-Fi card is Atheros whereas bt dongle is BT-270 (Widcomm). But it has a serious flaw. (Thanks Asus). You cannot switch off Bluetooth via function keys interchanging with wi-fi card. The wireless function key disables wifi and bluetooth both or enables both. Though the actual flaw is absence of hard switch, Wireless Console is another big flaw, it must provide 4 states (wifi on-bt off, wifi off-bt on, wifi on-bt on, wifi off-bt off). But it doesn't. So i don't guarentee that your new wireless card will be OK with Wireless Console app unless it has a hard switch.

    Hey,

I recently picked up an ASUS G53JW -3DE, and I was thinking about getting an SSD installed in it

Is SSD worth getting for this specific laptop? And, if so, which one should I get?

I'm having the same problem now, I have to turn off my computer and turn it back on a few times before Bios would load. Sometimes when it is a black screen and sits there, the fan sound would end up getting loud like it's running at a high RPM.

Is there a guide or thread that has one on how to do memtest? I'm a computer noob. :|

Depends on your usage. SSDs mainly help with boot times in Windows and load times for programs. It won't help gaming (except when loading a map) but it will make everything feel "faster" due to decreased read/write times.

I'd suggest checking out the Intel 510 series as they are pretty reliable. Other popular brands include OCZ and Crucial, but I'd suggest checking out the review on each SSD to find out which one will work for you :)

Has anyone upgraded their graphics card? I'm thinking of doing it but i dont have any experience with computer or laptop parts. I was thinking if the g53 would be compatible with the gtx 560 also. Also i was wondering for those gamers out there, i have heard that the g53 will not be able to max out skyrim, any suggestions on upgrades to max it out?

Last time I checked (and read somewhere on these forums) you can't replace the 460m on the G series notebooks. G53 has a mobile 460 & it definitely won't be able to max newer games.

I got it, IMHO it prevents central ping from being squeezed tightly rather than using it for swiveling purposes. Though it's still a big flaw of Asus. Don't know cnt-lc53 will %100 solve this problem.

I have had periodic shutdowns on my G53 related to what I believe to be overheating.

    The following factors were identified:
    Connected monitor (HDMI).
Running games (specifically in the most current concern, Dead Island).
Computer would shut down in a controlled manner in the middle of a session
Turning it back on shows the "resuming windows" mode.
During game play things were not hot around the back and it the computer did not seem (dis)stressed.

This was frustrating, as I had read through a number of comments here related to this, but apparently not quite all the same problems. This laptop never shuts down when it is NOT connected to a monitor... a clear clue to me.

Spending some time doing a number of experiments and system changes, including:
Cleaning out all vents (no obvious dust anywhere)
Updating the nvidia drivers to 280. Clean install.
    Updating the asus bios.
Removed and then restored the power4gear interface.
Turned hibernation modes off in windows, power4gear, AND using the CMD command line interface.

After these changes, and the most clear individual factor was updating the bios and drivers, things started heating up. The fans were running a lot more under similar load, and the fan area is definitely hotter. From this I concluded that something was keeping the fans from running at their proper speed. So this is now corrected. The problems still persist however.

Turning off hibernation modes and/or any interaction from power4gear did nothing as an individual factor. This is how I identified the fact that the computer was not hibernating per se, but actually shutting down from too much heat (and apparently not enough cooling).

So with my problems still occurring, although a bit less of the time, I elevated the back of the computer. It is somewhat unclear where the inlets are for the cooling on this computer, but I assume some air is drawn in on the bottom vent. Someone here indicates that air is also drawn in through the top keyboard area. (this is consistent with asus air flow diagrams... but...). Initially this worked like a charm, I was not having any shutdowns.
Then, last night it started happening again. I realized there was one final factor I was not accounting for. When problems were occurring -- my computer cover is closed and under the monitor. (I use an external keyboard). When I was testing the initial configuration, I had my laptop screen turned off, but the monitor was on, AND the cover was propped open.

So when I was overheating with my cover closed, the rear end of the computer both on top and underneath are very hot to the touch.... taking the clue that perhaps cooling is coming in from the top... I propped open the top about 20-30 degrees. The shutdowns totally stopped. Things are running hot, but not too hot.

I just thought I would provide some additional thoughts to this cooling issue.
If I had three things that I believe solved my problem... it would be updating the nvidia drivers (which apparently increased fan speed or reset a heat/fan speed detection problem). Two, propping up the back a little to provide a bit more potential air circulation under the laptop, and three, to keep the top propped open just a bit.

I wanted to once again thank users for providing a number of tips here!

Asus G53JW is NOT perfect (opposite to 'persistent perfection' of Asus) slogan. For your issues, i "doubt" new mobile forceware drivers aren't specialized for different notebook brands, especially OEM vendors, which may prevent fan rotations from performning normal. Can you try downloading the VGA driver from Asus site? For the BIOS update: Asus fails to mention the changes in the latest BIOS in a detailed mannger, so you must stay away unless you know which issue to solve.

    Good luck.

Hi, I have just bought a G53JW-XR1 (i7-740qm, GTX 460m), no Sandy Bridge but my budget was under $500...

Just been shipped, should get it in a couple days, looking forward to try it out.

I owned a Lenovo X120e but I have been lucky to grab a HP Touchpad during the firesale, which replace any basic computer need when travelling so I decided to sell it in order to get something "more" powerful.

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody had upgraded their optical drive.

I found the following drive and was wondering if it could fit in this laptop:

Panasonic Blu-Ray 6X Burner Writer BD-R DVD Drive UJ-240 (SATA Interface, 12.7mm in height)

Anyone found a solution to keyboard/keystroke drops? I have them constantly (I'm a relatively fast typist). Doesn't matter what the app is. I tried updating to the latest BIOS, but no help.

    Am I just doomed?

Generally the latest BIOS has solved a majority of those issues. I assume you reinstalled all of the appropriate drivers as well? Did you double check your BIOS version to be sure it matches the most recent version (I have seen goofier things, lol)?

What i really don't like is it's totally unclear what the newer and newest BIOS bring. They (Asus) seem that they have hesitated expressing the changes in the latest BIOS briefly, is it too hard to explain what things are fixed in latest BIOS!

Hi guys. I have this problem with my G53JW-A3 (from XoticPC) and was wondering if someone has the same issue and/or knows the solution:

Basically it runs really well, even manages to stay cool better than most laptops. The only problem is, recently, the power chord only needs a tiny nudge and the laptop goes to Battery Mode, then back again to AC Mode with another nudge.

It also gets really hot. Not the brick adapter, the metal pin at the end of the chord that goes into the side of the laptop. Gets very hot, to a point where I can smell burning plastic.

Do you think it's a defective power supply & chord, or the laptop itself? I'm taking it to a service on Monday, but wanted to know if anyone experienced anything similar. Cheers!

That mean your adapter pin is broken (One inside power port). It's well known issue. Search forum for it.

Contact ASUS to RMA it. :D

Thanks for your reply. I tried searching, but didn't do so well. :p

Is this a common problem, you say? Is it easily fixed, like by replacing the pin? Or will it require more attention, like maybe even replacing the motherboard (if it got hot enough to melt anything)?

For the 3rd time in a year I've had the power-port pin break off. This time it happened even though I used the the L-shaped connector from bix-power. This will be the 4th overall I've had with this laptop in under a year, (last one being the original hard drive died).

I really feel this is a fatal design flaw with G53JW-A1 variety. Does anyone know if this is just a problem with the model or do other models G53SW and G53SX suffer from this as well?

Basically, at this point I'm getting ready to invoke Lemon Law and want to know if I should demand a replacement to a newer model or demand a full refund.

Such as shame too, because when this laptop isn't BROKEN, she runs like a dream.

For what it's worth, I just had the pin break off on my G53JW-X1.

Really annoying. Up until now the only problem I've had is with the dropped keys (which I've just given up on).

I love the thing when it works (except for typing), but I may be done with Asus notebooks.

211 is still the latest. It's marked as being March 28 2011, but it's actual date is Jan 28 2011.

No way to know if a new one is coming until it shows up, but I wouldn't hold my breath at this point.

Just got my laptop back from Asus Customer Support, where they successfully repaired my broken power pin for the third time. Glad I got it back in time for the Holidays, just in time for SWTOR.

Except everytime I turn the laptop on the Fan goes up 100%, even when my GPU temp is idling in the low 30s? I'm going to have to do some more detective work to figure out whats going on, the fan would only go full blast when I was playing games for extended periods, never just idling on my desktop.

If anyone has some good ideas for fan control please share.

    Hello,
I've been following this forum for a while, but now it's time to write too. Thanks for the help so far :)
I've got this laptop for 6-7mths now but never really used it that much - been terribly busy. Anyway, not using it and still the power adapter got ed up and had to call in people and have it fixed. But that's not the issue.
I have this feeling that it's not as smooth as a laptop of this kind should be. Reasons:
    - mozilla is choppy - to the point of hating it and reverting to IE (never)
    - opening windows explorer is quite slow
    - watching pictures is choppy too
    - i have 3 games: age of empires 2 - unplayable totally (lets say it's old and I should find some tweaks, but it worked fine the first 3-4 weeks), heroes of mm 5 (choppy), heroes of mm 6 - for this game I BOUGHT the machine - is choppy and not nice
    - I generally don't have a "smooth feeling" related to it

Theoretically the laptop would take all these easily, but I don't understand why it doesn't.
As a general info I have also payed for a Win 7 Ultimate (my second payed WIndows :) ).

So tell me, any ideas, please? It would make a nice gift from Santa...

    Thanks.

HI I am new at the forum, and totally new owner of an Asus, and this GS53sw-xn1...

Last night at 3 am I plugged in my headphones, not in the right plug, and when I started playing a video of course the sond went out from the speakers

So in the rush I touched repeatedly FN + F10 (or so thought, it was a flash) and the soun went off

But the commands disappeared, If I press Fn + F10/11/12, nothing happens.

I tried setting the volume through the ICON, right beside the clock and a pair of other places...but without any positive result

    Can someone help me.....THANKS A LOT HAPPY NEW YEAR :D :D :D

Hey, I'm having an ATK related problem with this laptop(G53Jw-a1). If anyone could help, I'd be grateful. I'm not exactly the best with laptops haha.

So, my problem is almost all of my function keys are not working ( except for the brightness oddly ) So after asking I get linked here :

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS G53Jw

And I download the ATK and hotkey driver related utilities no problem. But then the installation comes. A little bit into the installation, I am told that the source file is not found. It then tells me to verify that the file exists and that I can access it. I remember uninstalling my ATK at an earlier date for whatever reason, so I go and perform a system restore to get it back. The system restore works and all, the files I'm looking for are back, yet I still get the exact same message. However, the installer gives me an additional option, to remove the ATK package. So, I decide to go ahead and remove and now I'm back where I started. Does anyone have any suggestions/advice/etc on what I should do? I have other major driver related issues but this is the primary one. Once again, any help at all would be appreciated.

You can try the drivers that came from the Dvd? Probably uninstall first the ATK Driver from the Control Panel then reinstall using the supplied Dvd software & utilities.
