You will not get anything better than SATA-II speeds as this is limited by the motherboard.

I have overclocked my GPU with MSI Afterburner. I have Crysis installed but have not played it since OC'ing. Crysis is so demanding that I doubt you, or I for that matter, will be able to run it on the highest settings. In other games I play I get an extra 10-20 FPS using the same settings I used before overclocking. For example, I get a steady additional 10 FPS (with occasional spikes of 20 FPS) playing BFBC2 and a steady 20+ FPS in World of Tanks. I believe that overclocking my CPU with SetFSB would get another boost for cpu intensive games like BFBC2 but I have not tried that yet.

One of the great features of the new Sandy Bridge Technology laptops, like the ASUS G53SW, is that they support two SATA III hard drives at SATA III speeds.

    Are you sure about that?
I'm asking because on my JW the SATA ports are as following:
    SATA0- primary hdd
    SATA1- optical drive
    SATA4- secondary hdd
    SATA2, 3, 5 are not used/present.

iirc on SW only the SATA0 and SATA1 are 3rd gen (SATA-III, 6Gb/s) and if they are organised as in JW you cant have 2 hdd's running at SATA-III speeds unless you chose not to use an optical drive...

Well... first post here after reading A LOT this topic and the G53SW. I couldn't let go an offer today in Newegg, they had an G53JW-XN1 OpenBox for $735. ...I'm taking the risk of the open box though, but I understand that ASUS warranty should be valid + the 30 days refund from Newegg.

I'm sure the differences between the JW and the SW are not so big if you take into account this offer hehe! Any experience here with openboxes from Newegg here?

    Thanks in advance!

$735 is a really nice price...
And the diffs are indeed not so big:
    more battery life for SW
more cpu processing power for SW, but you will see a difference only if you do lots on video encoding...

On the ASUS G53SW-A1 the ports are not organized the same as the JW. They are organized exactly the way I stated. We have built hundreds of each version and know the difference.

Does anyone know what size screw the hard drive caddy requires? I got the hard drive caddy from the ASUS estore, but came with no screws. Is it M3x3mm?

Hey guys I've run into a problem with my g53jw-A1...

Today I started up my laptop and now my Ethernet port stopped working.... I can still get wireless but after trying with a few different ethernet wires I can't get my internet to work through physical connection...

I believe that it's an M2.5x5; however, this is what I did to make it work, and the reply is another good idea to bum a screw from the WiFi card.

Wow, I really need to buy the L connector. My pin broke for the 2nd time. It just came off, I wasn't rough with it or anything. Wondering if the warranty covers a second repair...

Is breaking the pin generic defect for G series or specific to G53 series? I have G53JW???

I'm concerned now (should i really?).

    Does CNT-LC53 adapter rescue us?

It helps by keeping the cord out of the way so you're less likely to bump it. Depending on where your cord is coming in from, this might also relieve tension in the cord.

Plus, it's much more convenient if you have a mouse next to the laptop.

Thanks! Well, it will act as a desktop replacement for me so most probably I'll charge the battery, check that it works, and then take it out and put it aside just to preserve it from charges/discharges while connected to the power plug. And regarding the cpu power, I'm coming from a Core2Duo @ 2.13GHz, and actually it was kind of enough for what I do. This i7 will be great, no need of the super brand new plus technology of SW right now. ;)

Again, the only thing I'm praying for is everything to be OK on that "openbox"!

    Thanks again!

So, it's job (the adapter 90 degree) is only to provide an interface to make all the further "plug-in and plug-out"s through this adapter to let built-in power jack stay in peace?

I wouldn't say that. Whenever I unplug the power cord I also remove the 90 degree adapter, so it doesn't help in that regard. What it helps to prevent is bumping the power cord while it's plugged in, and it also helps alleviate any strain on the laptop's input if the cord is having to curve in order to plug in.

So, you plugged/unplugged including power jack adapter (connected to power cable) many times and had no issues?

Regarding to entire thread, i entirely thought that the main problem is the original power jack was under stress/wear during each plug-in and plug-out, that's why other people would use this adapter....which was my thought, i can be wrong.

OK, so the only difference I can see between the A1 and 3DE are the optical drive and LCD. That being said, anyone know where I can get the 3DE'S LCD and BLU-RAY drive?

Regarding Oberon's uninstalling, I had the same unhappy experience. Just reinstall the ATK Package on top of the damaged one. Choose "Repair".

The ATK Package is available here : ATKPackage/ATKPackage_WIN7_32_WIN7_64_z100005.zip
ATK ACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities
    9.13 MB 2010/07/30
ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download

PS. This procedure is mentioned in the eManual under "Troubleshooting"

    Hi there!

I've been reading the thread but I cannot find any experience of someone upgrading RAM into a JW-XN1 (the Newegg version). I would like to put 4GB more into the machine but I don't know if it comes with a 2+2GB or if it has a 4GB dimm on the back. I'm just wondering in order to buy the correct set of memories. I think THIS will work... but I'm not sure. Any advise from somebody with experience?

    Thanks!!

I personally have the JW-A1 that came with 6Gb's. The G53's have 4 RAM slots. 2 are seen as soon as you remove the bottom cover. 1 is underneath the black plastic under the keyboard, and the fourth is only seen after removing the aluminum plate under the keyboard.
The G53's accept 204 pin DDR3 1333mhz. Some people have reportedly had success with using 4Gb sticks, but I personally haven't tried yet.

There is a disassembly guide in this forum, and a great video on youtube.

Well, I did a lot of research before I bought my G53JW. I heard about all of the power connectors having issues and thought it didn't mean much because you always see a disproportionate number of complaints on the Internet. After having my laptop for only a little over 3 months, I can no longer charge my laptop. There is a short in the connector on the motherboard side, so this post is one of the last things I'll do while I back up files and prep this thing to send in to Asus. I've been incredibly anal about making sure that nobody ever bumps the power cord. This really is poor design on Asus's part, which is unfortunate. I've loved this laptop.

Quick follow up to my last post...I pulled my power cord out and plugged it in and when it came out the male post snapped off and came out with the female part of the connector. Broken motherboard. Now I have to see if Asus support is as bad as I've read. My fingers are crossed. I use this thing every day at work, so I'm really irritated. This thing was NEVER dropped, bumped, or anything else that would have caused the post to break. A+ for cooling and speed, massive Fail for basic motherboard design!

    Hi,

Today I have joined the club with a G53JW-SX276V.

Anyone here has an OCZ Vertex 2 120 Gb, to share his opinion about the drive's performance?

As a side note, the memory is DDR3 @ 1333 but because of the procesor, it works at 1066 MHz. Still, the Windows Experience Index for my memory is only 5.9, wich is 0.5 higher than a DDR2 @ 667 ...

    Just order the Asus G53JW.
I just like to ask people who are having issue with the power connectors do you guys use a wired mouse or wirless? And how often do you disconnect the power from the MD?
I am going to use a wireless mouse and most likely Disconnect the power cord every few days or so. Hope I won't have the power connectors issue ><

Yo follow g53'rs. Need some help. I did fresh install on my laptop when I got it which was around 6 months ago. Now its starting to get a little buggy, wanted to make another fresh install to clear out the bugs in my system.

Problem is, Ive lost my Driver CD. I misplaced it and now i cant find it.

I tried manually downloading the drivers from the ASUS website and made another clean install. Installed them one by one. I think I did everything right but my laptop wasn't as responsive as it used to be. It seems like everyday the quality is deteriorating. Sometimes I got random crashes. As in hangs. No BSOD. It just stops and forces me to long press the power button. Sometimes it takes around 8 seconds justs to start up mozilla.

Is it a driver thing? Did I install drivers wrong? And is there anyone who can share a link to where I can download an iso file for the g53jw

Ok I will. Will post results later.

Btw, is there like a procedure on what drivers to install first > last?
asus website is a bit confusing. I dont know if i installed wrong drivers or didnt install the right ones. Like the bluetooth. it has two drivers. The keyboard filther, which i checked on the internet says its a virus. The driver guide found in the forums is for g73. really confused man.

Usually Intel drivers first, then ASUS drivers (KB Filter..etc) after that VGA & Audio and finally network related drivers.

After you install drivers update windows

Also pay attention to wireless console 3 app. What i found that, wi-fi led on your notebook is controlled by wc3. At some boot ups, you may have your wifi led is OFF though you still can connect the net just fine. The led is deceptive.

I wish there were HARD wifi and bluetooth switch!

I did memtest and my memory passed with flying colors. No errors whatsoever. Any ideas? I'm thinking its a virus. So I think i need to reformat.

Still, drivers are confusing in the asus webpage. there are multiple downloads.

Can anybody make a list of the only important drivers which a g53jw needs to run?

turbo boost is just a monitor right? it would still run regardless if you install.

What about Intel Rapid Storage Technology?

oh btw, the turbo boost monitor that the asus website provides aint working.

Yeah turbo boost is just a monitor it is always enabled.

Intel RST enables a bunch of SATA features that you may want. However it has been known to cause some issues on various systems. Try it and if you run into issues, treat it as a primary suspect.

I do. Notable difference in boot-up as you would expect. There is just enough memory on this drive to be able to have everything operating and program related on the SSD, with data relegated to the 750 g HD.

For how long do you have the drive? Did you have any problems with it?
Is it an old generation or a newer one?

I purchased this Asus with SSD in late March 2011. Not sure exactly what generation it is, but assume it is most recent based on purchase date. No problems at all with the drive as it was configured with the laptop and Windows 7.

Hey, im planning to buy an SSD too. been doin some research and seems alot of people are claiming they are a little buggy and have shortlife spans. buying one is sort of a risk. you MAY get a great ssd which would last, OR get one which wont. my opinion for you is to get the intel 320 series. to qoute Chastity "It's tried and tested". hope this helps!

BTW, any g53'rs out there that have already updated their BIOS? What did they change in the new one? because the only thing it says in the asus website is "usb3.0 firmware change" no more details O_O

This is what I don't get. I have been using laptops with the same design and the power pin connector never ever came off. Is it just an Asus thing?

Also how would a L :shape: connector help? Because instead of putting the pressure at the center of the pin when you pull the power cable out, you are applying pressure to the side which could be worse. It will be great if someone can answer this.

The only reason I (and I think many others) purchased the L-shape adapter was to keep the power cord out of the way when using a mouse next to the laptop. It is purely for convenience - although, perhaps the fact that it is now out of the way I'll never bump it? That might help protect the pin.

As for removing the power cable, I unplug the L-shape adapter from the laptop before I disconnect it from the standard plug. Likewise, I attach it before plugging it into the laptop. I do not think that the strain on the pin is any different. If the pin breaks from normal plugging/unplugging, then the L-shape adapter is probably just as likely to break it (no more, no less).

^^ Thx Networc! I use a wirless mouse and I usually like to stretch my arms when using my mouse so it never got in the way.

Is strange when so many ppl have have this issue yet my frd who the 17inch version never had it and he used his laptop over a year already.

    Thx again!

Yep, that is my choice as well, just like you said : "Tried and tested".
Initially i wanted and OCZ Vertex 2 but i've read on the net that the new generation (25mn) has some problems, so the next best choice (speedwise) is Intel.

As for the power pin, i was glad that my charger from my old MSI fit perfectly on my ASUS, cause it has and L-shaped connector. How much this will help, well that remains to be seen.

I bought CNT-LC53 for my G53JW however "YL53" is written as emboss on the product that i received as follows:

BTW, the converter is not so tight when connected to the notebook. And the converter is rotating around itself, i do not know whether it was made a bit loose intentionally to keep power pin relax when connected?

Edit: Bixmart claimed the product is the correct one, it is identical.

    Thanks!

Does anyone else have issues with their wifi? Mine connects, but takes a few minutes before it can actually use the connection.

Looks like my hard drive is dying. I have a G53JW running on its stock 750GB 7200rpm drive. A few days ago I started to notice longer boot-ups and long load times in games. Then yesterday it crashed during a WOW binge and when I rebooted the BIOS yells at me stating something to the effect "Please insert a bootable disk or media..."

I'm guessing I'll have to RMA this baby. Either that or accept the drive is dead and buy myself an SSD. If it send it back, that will be the 3rd time in under a year! First two were from the broken power pin. Although since I bought the L shape connector mentioned here, I haven't had any problems *knock on wood*
