Thanks! I'm sorry, but can you tell me what the advantages are to the 90 degree connector for my power plug? How much does it cost, and where would I go about finding one? I've just never heard of that before

Thanks though, I'm really looking forward to firing it up and playing some games :) Like I said, I've never had a PC that I can play *real* games on. I've got a backlog of titles that's getting *really* long of stuff I want to play - I've been mentally accumulating it for at least five years now! I went out and purchased GTA4 yesterday, for example - god, I've been wanting to play that since it came out!

hey the power port in our laptop is very fragile and many of our nbr members have broken the power port since its placed in an awkward position in g53. So i recommend you buying the cnt-lc53 connector in bixmart.com.. It ll be really useful..
Hey even i moved to this laptop from a 6 year old, laptop with intel m processor and 7200go graphics.. I should say this laptop is awesome :) you ll surely enjoy it..

Yeah, I got it today and I am utterly blown away. There are not enough superlatives possible. Going to this laptop from a 4-year-old Macbook Pro is an insane upgrade.

And now that I have it, I see exactly what you mean about the power port on the laptop. It's not only fragile, but positioned exactly where you want to use your external mouse. I see EXACTLY why I should get an upgraded connector, the last thing I want to is snap the pin off, or something.

First off, I have ordered that 90-degree connector - very good idea, only $10 after shipping for something like that which will make it much easier to use my external mouse for gaming and probably make it much less likely for me to snap the pin on the power cord sounds like a very, very sound investment.

Secondly, I have run into my first actual issue! For some reason, after I was messing around with some of the display settings on the nvidia control panel, two of the three special little buttons above the keyboard on my G53SW stopped working. I assume the same three buttons are on the G53JW models, as well.

Basically, the backlight-toggle button still works fine - thankfully, since it's the most important one, it seems. But the other two, one of which allows me to cycle through the power saver options (high performance mode, batter saver mode, etc) and the other of which lets me switch between color modes (normal mode, theater mode, vivid mode, etc) no longer seem to do anything at all. Anybody have this happen to them? Or know why it would happen? Should I just call tech support?

Also, I found in the control panel at least how to switch between the power saver options. Anybody know where else you can switch between the color modes, other than pressing that left-most button above the keyboard? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

hey dont know the cause for your problem but you can use the asus control deck application to switch between different battery and colour modes!
@others- guys i have one serious serious issue with this laptop. Its driving me crazy.. First, even with the high performance settings in the laptop, every game drops 5-10 fps while using battery mode.. Can anyone tell me the reason behind this?
Second, while playing in battery mode, when it reaches low battery, the system never alerts us that the battery is low, instead it switches off (not a proper shutdown) without any warning. Then i should either charge it for ten minutes or remove the battery and put it again to switch on the laptop.. Huh! Please help guys

Just buy DDR3 1333Mhz 2GB module. You already have 3x2GB installed. Ram slot is under the KB.

i was wanting to put a 4gb stick in there to bring my total to 10gb ram but i also read in here or maybe in another forum where ppl were having issues with the computer not booting once more ram was installed. i heard this was because the latencty and the timing weren't matching up. and will either 204 or 240 pin work?

hey guys i know theres a problem with the power plug and im having problems with mine, even when its plugged in it still doesnt charge, what can be done about it? If the cord has a golden thing inside it does that mean the pin broke off, well I'm going to send it in to asus, I'm in california and i seriously hope this is covered by warranty, seems like overseas guys have it covered, anyone know if it will cover me, or what i could say to the techs that would make them consider it under warranty?

Ok so ive been looking around at different gaming laptops (M15x and G53) and I was astonished by the power and value of the G53....I was wondering how you all like it so far...and is it worth the money? Or should I just buy a G73jw?

UPDATE: Disregard the problem here -- I figured it out. For some reason, the FN key setting was down to the lowest level. Bumping it up brought them back for me. Strange.

New G53JW owner here (not quite four weeks). Things have been great until tonight. For some reason, my backlighting isn't working on my keyboard all the sudden. It worked fine earlier tonight, but when I booted up an hour ago, no dice.

I removed the ATK files and downloaded them from the site and reinstalled, but still no backlighting. The lights flash on when you boot up like they always do, but when you turn on the power button on the keyboard they don't come on (despite saying "all lights on").

I haven't changed anything since they were working (other than the ATK when they stopped), so I'm at a loss. I'm not particularly computer savvy, but if anyone has some ideas I'd love to hear them. I miss the lights already...

Sorry if this has been addressed already -- the search function here leaves a bit to be desired.

I picked up an used G53JW here and I love it so far. Upgraded with a cheapo Kingston 96GB SSD,a Seagate 500GB XT hard drive and a 6200 Wifi Card. Best laptop I ever bought for 1200.

Well I bought a a G53jw-ax1 from amazon after tediously studying all these forums. I got it duty free into my country and it all worked out, until the powerjack broke.

Basically I was able to fix it myself since I didn't want to wait a month.
My friend was able to remove the powerjack from the motherboard using a hot air solder.

Then we covered the ethernet port up with alot of electric tape and heated up and just snapped right out.

I then bought this, that was the most similar one I could find
    http://www.dcpowerjacks.net/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1215
This one fits right into the motherboard, no need to mod anything. The only problem is that it has a 1.67mm tip and the g53 uses 2.5mm.

To fix the power adaptor problem, I grabbed a pack of power jacks from a universal adaptor, and soldered the cables together onto the new jack, covered it well in epoxy to avoid any kind of short.

And now my g53 works perfectly and no need to RMA, Ill have some pictures in a while, I even video tapped the when we removed the powerjack.

New Asus G53JW owner here. Not new to Asus gaming laptops, this is my second one. This current one, customized by Power Notebooks with 120 G SSD, an Nvidia GTS-460M, i7-740QM, a 750G 7.2K HD, and blue ray drive starts up quickly and has great build quality.

When I got it, I immediately wanted to test some of my favorite games... Fallout New Vegas and Borderlands run at the highest resolutions available on an external monitor at 1920x1080. When I ran Bulletstorm... new for me... there were periodic slowdowns and jumpiness in the video which I found unusual -- but with nothing to compare the game to, I figured it was just a bit much for the set-up. That was until I started having the dreaded shutdown problem during more intense boss battles. In fact, it happened three times in an hour, the computer would just shut down in the middle... it was certainly a controlled shutdown.... because when I would come back up, everything was still running and in play.

My old Asus would get noticeably warm on the exhaust ports, but continue running playing graphic intensive games. I never did any temperature readings because there was never an operational problem. This new system is not getting noticeably hot at all during Bulletstorm, and there are definitely exhaust fans running during play. (so no, I do not have those temps). Perplexed I found this forum.

I used my new found knowledge to try a couple of things. First observation, true to statements here... pulling the lap top off the external monitor fixed the problem. I finished what I could not finish with Bulletstorm's fly trap boss and continued playing for hours, with no jumpiness at all.....

Then I downloaded and installed the most recent version of drivers for the Nvidia video card, v270. I let the Nvidia installer do the work in "recommended" mode. Hooked back up to the monitor and played through Bulletstorm sections again. NO JUMPINESS. NO SLOWDOWNS. NO SHUT DOWNS. I am not totally certain this has done the trick, but time will tell.

Just wanted to thank this forum for the suggestions to investigate and fix my own problem. LOVE MY ASUS G53JW!

I'm another owner of G53JW that i bought about 10 days ago. Generally, it's a good-looking notebook, however there are some "really" irritating issues i've found out, please read if anybody interested:

    1) There's no chance to disable POST screen logo, unlike stated in E-Manual of G53JW, pressing [TAB] does "nothing", Asus logo is visible though pressing TAB. Granted, it passes logo too fast, maybe that's the reason?

    2) Please, please, please be careful while uninstalling bloatware(s). Uninstalling Oberon's games seperately (one by one) from "programs and features" of Win7, destroyed keyboard backlight and hotkey functions and destroyed many applications came bundled with Asus Driver CD, your Cyberlink Power2Go, Creative Alphemy, Google Chrome (if you have installed), your current Windows 7 Aero theme settings and much more "will not be" usable. I hate Oberon's games which turns your great G53JW into a garbage.

    3) I wish Windows 7 SP1 was pre-installed on my system but no, you'll have to spend a lot of hours to perform a massive update for Win7.

    4) DVD-RW drive isn't that great, it's a LG. Reading most of discs like Sony, Maxell DVD may cause error according to "Windows Event Viewer", type "eventvwr" to "Run" to see Warnings and Errors related to reading CD/DVD.

    5) Webcam is too slow to reflect any motion happened in front of it. Asus LifeFrame shows the image too slow from webcam.

It's all for now, maybe other G53JW owners have had similar issues. Overally good hardware, plus, i have Nvidia driver version 259 came with notebook and v209 (inital) BIOS.

    Hello community

To introduce myself, I am involved in the largest French-speaking forum dedicated to ASUS laptops, netbooks, etc. I'm an Asus user since 2002 with the excellent (though certainly outdated) L3800C laptop. Not all French people living in the stone age with laptops from another time :D I just personally remain attached to some old stuff... Anyhow, the latest ASUS laptops also arrive in Europe for our greatest pleasure, but with some disappointments as I'll explain here.

So, I'm not here to tell my life, but rather a matter that concerns more and more G53JW users in France and around the world. No less than 25 french G53JW users have complained about the breakdown of their DC power jack  Le forum des portables Asus / [G53JW] Problème d'alimentation / prise cassée. This clearly appears to be a manufacturing defect. Currently in France, we note that ASUS refuse to take this issue to his office within the legal guarantee. I noticed through some feedback on several forums, that ASUS agreed to repair at its expense in some countries including the U.S., Australia, Serbia. >> Asus G53Jw Problems Issue g53 g53jw-a1 broken - BTOforums.com , http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...27578-asus-g53jw-a1-3de-owners-lounge-38.html , power connector pin broke on my G53jw. This is pure discrimination and not worthy of a great brand like ASUS.

As French consumers have no intention of giving up, more actions are planned to pressure ASUS : contact consumer groups, media and communicate globally on this issue.
If some of you can provide me with written proof like what ASUS has accepted the repair under warranty, it would be of great benefit to our members. Thank you for them.

Sorry for my poor English, I'm a better reader than writer :p Long life to your great forum where I go regularly to seek answers.

Hi all, ordered this laptop a few days ago (3DE version) but have a minor question about it.

What mouse is included? Different sources constantly say different mice, and if it matters, I ordered from Abe's of Maine (they had it cheaper than elsewhere) if it matters, and they told me that they ship directly from the manufacturer. Websites generally say it comes with a laser or optical mouse made by Asus but other people report getting a Razer Abyssus (I'm hoping for the Abyssus since I've heard it's one of the best mice out there).

Hey guys, haven't been here in a while. I checked a few days ago real quick and saw some posts about the 90 degree adaptor and bought the one most of the people have recommended (the one from bix). Delivery was very fast, like 2 days only I think. It's been awesome so far.

As for my G53, it's been great so far. I got it off of xoticpc.com. The only problem I had was that ASUS failed big time at the hard drive bays, which I had to wait for until March (got the laptop last December). It would not have been so bad if they have told xoticpc that it would take that long. They kept telling xoticpc that it would be a month maybe (from Dec, so ETA then was Jan), so that kept me waiting, waiting, waiting.

Another thing was that my laptop came with a dead pixel. It's one tiny dead pixel in the middle of the screen. It gets in the way sometimes but not bad enough (for me) to send it back.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase of the G53 from xoticpc. :)

    EDIT:
Oh and some review on the machine, for those interested. My specs are i7 740qm, 8gb ram, 4x blu-ray, 2 500gb drives, intel advanced-n 6205 wifi card, and other settings are the same on most g53jw's.

Adobe Photoshop: Very nice, haven't had any problem yet. Although sometimes it does stutter when I paint too much, but it rarely does that and only a couple of seconds when it does.

Autodesk Maya: Decent so far with my what I've done. You can't have high details on viewports since you need a pro gpu for that. Very responsive, but does slow down a little when there are a lot of polygons on the scene (starts to slow down at a million or two i think)

Webcam: It's pretty bad. I tried doing some test recordings, and I got like 10fps in a decently lit room. Could be a problem on my hardware, im not sure. Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks!

Games I've played on this laptop:
NBA 2k11: This is the only game I really have trouble with. The NVidia driver sometimes stops after a long session of playing. But it comes back real quick, so it just stops for a second or less. The problem is that after it recovers, I can't adjust the brightness of the screen anymore. But that's about it. The game plays at around 40-50fps on all maximum settings.

Dragon Age 2: No problems of any sort for this. I play at max resolution and most of graphics options turned on. And I also have the high res texture on, playing with Direct X 11.

Fallout New Vegas: It can get slow at times at 1080p, but is really fast at 720p.

That's it for now, good luck to everyone :)

    Hi,
Nba 2k11 is my favourite game, too! What is your Nvidia driver version? I haven't tried this game on my G53JW yet, however GTX 460M should run it smooth. Did you notice any other users having trouble with Nba 2k11 and GTX460M?

I was one of the original owners that had my power port brake. I even posted a sob story here way back in this thread. I sent it in December 12th and received in January 5th.

Since then, I've had my power port brake AGAIN. However I sent it in last Tuesday and got it back on Monday. From the time they got it, it took them 2 days to do a turn around.

I believe the different in times can be explained by:
    - They didn't have the replacement parts available in December
    - They took X-Mas Holiday Vacations
    - They are now Pro at replacing theses, given the volume of the problem.

Only detriment is that the first time they comp'd my freight to the facility. The second time I had to pay for shipping. Both times they paid for shipping back to my house.

    Hi Woot

Could you tell me if your G53JW was repaired under the "ASUS 2-year limited global hardware warranty" , or under the "1 Year Accidental Damage Protection" ? >> ASUS ADW at a Glance
In France, we are not concerned by the second one and ASUS refuse to fix it under global hardware warranty

Has any one tried overclocking one of these laptops? I've had mine since last October and it has been working beautifully (knock on wood). The only game that I haven't been able to play at full settings so far is Crysis. Is it worth overclocking a G53 and if so how would I go about accomplishing that?

Mine was repaired under the ASUS 2-year limited global hardware warranty. I'm based in the United States and my laptop was sent to the facility in Indiana.

As for overclocking, I haven't felt the need for more power yet. I'm playing Crysis 2 on Very High Settings and it looks and runs great. Not sure about how to go about OC'ing the laptop CPU. You can always overclock the Video Card easily with Riva tuner or similiar utility. I know people have posted success with that earlier in the thread.

Look up MSI afterburner to overclock your GPU. Also, there's a video of Ken Lee from GentechPC showing you how to overclock it followed by some BFBC2 gameplay on Youtube.

OK Woot, thanks for the reply :) In fact, you say your ADW was not activated when ASUS agree to fix the problem. Am I right ?
If so this is a very good news for all those "fighting" (in France and Spain) for their G53JW repaired for free under ASUS 2-year LGHW...

    Hi Shaman,
Are you using bios 209 which is initial (at least for my G53JW-XA1) or have you applied newer BIOS which updates USB 3.0?

G53JW has missing features: (mine is G53JW-XA1)

1- It does not have any activity LED on LAN port as every LAN card is supposed to have like green/yellow leds.

2- It doesn't have any expansion card slot like ExpressCard or PCMCIA, don't be fooled by lousy documentation which shows card reader (MS/SD) as expansion slot, but it isn't.

3- Boot up logo (Asus logo at boot up) cannot be disabled. No option either in BIOS or with function keys.

4- No hard Wifi/Bluetooth switch! That's not such good :(

Does anyone agree with me about these 4 missing features?

Hey guys, I purchased this laptop about two months ago and have been extremely happy with the performance. The only issue I can find is one I can't fix. I don't know if this is a software issue or hard-coded.

Everything runs awesome, but if I leave my laptop running for more than 3 or 4 hours without interaction, it shuts off. Automatically. No... it does not overheat, I've felt it after it shuts off and it's cool to the touch. I can make my own power plan and keep the processor at 30% and shut nothing off, Never, and it will still shut off after a few hours. I've tried disabling all of the programs and it still does it. I'm running 24 processes and it still shuts off so I am wondering if there is anything I am missing, or if anyone else has had this problem with the Power4Gear or Windows itself?

If anyone has any answers I would love to hear them, thank you!

Do you have any entries in Task Scheduler that might cause the shutdown? Also do you see any useful entries in any of the logs under event viewer ?
Are you running a 'clean install' of windows?

I hadn't thought to look at the logs... I'll let the laptop run tonight and see what happens in the morning, and then I can actually gauge just how long it takes to shut off and what the event might be. Good idea! Maybe I can resolve this after all... Thanks!

Mine would shut down in a controlled fashion in the middle of playing games. It was not overheating as far as I could tell. It was always connected to a monitor when it would do this....

a couple of users here indicated that updating the Nvidia drivers would stop the problem. I updated and the problem stopped. Maybe this will help your problem also?

    Hello all,

I just bought a G53JW-IX (the european equivalent of -3DE) and first thing I did, as with all new hardware, I uninstalled the nVidia driver while downloading the latest 270.61 (the notebook version). This driver says it doesn't recognize what is the card installed inside -.-

Then I downloaded the driver from asus, same thing.

Now I will be doing a full recovery from the recovery partition, but, for the future... How can you keep your geforce driver up to date on this laptop?

I fixed the problem... all of my power plans on the Advanced Settings were set to Hibernate after 300 minutes. I used the Event ID in google and that didn't help so I just noticed after starting up,it would say, "Resuming Windows..." like it was hibernating. After all this, it was Windows Help that informed me where to fix the problem. Wooty woot!
