Just as an FYI, it took me a couple weeks to get around to shipping my laptop out, but they turned it around very rapidly (took less than a week to get it back).

Unfortunately when it came back, a bunch of the keys didn't work on the keyboard. They apologized, and I sent it back again and got it back in a few days. All's well now, except (again) the dropped keys.

Ugh my power pin just broke off FOR THE THIRD TIME. So pissed off right now. I've even been using an L-shaped connector, which I guess helped it last for almost a year this time instead of approximately a month each of the previous times before it broke, but STILL. SDKFJHASDK.

Thank god it didn't happen two weeks ago when I was in the middle of writing my doctoral thesis.

The keyboard thing is apparently some kind of voltage issue. Weird as it sounds, try uninstalling your touchpad drivers and just using the generic Windows drivers - that way the touchpad draws less voltage and your keyboard shouldn't lag or skip. It'll mean your touchpad doesn't function quite as well, and jumps around sometimes, but personally I'd rather have a fully functional keyboard.

Alternatively you can take the keyboard off and try scrubbing the end of the keyboard's ribbon cable to get a better connection.

    SATA III is backwards compatible.

HD brackets have to be ordered from Asus. There's a link upthread; I don't remember where exactly, but a quick search should find it.

Is there anyone who knows how to download the latest THX TruStudio? Mine was shipped with 1.02.00 and it crashes sometimes when you try to change speaker setup. Though it's a must-have app to get crystalized audio. Any ideas?

Note: Asus website doesn't provide new OEM version of TruStudio which is 1.04 AFAIK. So?

Hey everyone, just got my G53SX-NH71 a week back and have had no complaints about the performance. Just wanted to ask 2 question regarding this NB.
    1. Are the speakers in the laptop changeable cause ASUS hasn't put a good sounding speaker system in their g53 range??

    2. When the computer comes out from sleep or hibernation, i see a green screen for a split second and then the log-in screen comes on. Its not an annoying issue but I would like to get it resolved. Any suggestions?

Hope someone can help me. Haffun all and enjoy ur G53's!

Holy crap, this seems to have worked! Haven't been running without the driver for very long, but so far it sure seems like the drops are gone.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Only downside is I can't turn off tap-to-click (which I hate), but I'll learn to live with it. :)

Well, theoretically you could pull it apart and put in whatever speakers you can make fit, but given that you'll be limited by the available room, it'ls unlikely any replacement speakers would be much better. You're far better off just getting some external speakers, though obviously that's less portable.

That's almost certainly a driver issue; be sure you've installed the latest drivers from Nvidia's web site. If you have, try the beta drivers. Whatever you do, don't use the drivers on the Asus website as they're older and not great.

I have the Asus G53JW (non 3d, but full hd) and I was wondering if I can support 3 monitors....I am already using the native one and have Acer 21.5 display connected via the vga port...Can I connect another full hd display via the HDMI and have it be a separate workspace????

I have a pretty solid solution to pin protection on the asus if you don't move it... I use a small meal tray with handles on the side. The laptop itself barely fits in... but when i feed the power through a wood handle on the side it really provides additional support for the pin by lifting the pin up for a straight connection... another trick I've done is run the cord under the laptop so it loops straight into the power port on the laptop.

No cooler support... but atleast the pin isn't at risk and I can only access the ports on the right side... small loss to me.

Used to have a heating issue when I removed bloatware but found my performance is well enough that I don't care about having bloatware anymore... a little bit of fat never hurt anyone. I did uninstall the antivirus it came with though.

And about the power supply getting hot... it's because of gaming and happens with all laptops. Just don't put it on the carpet. I cheated once while gaming and put water bottles on the power supply. I felt paranoid but it made me feel a little more comfortable when pushing the box. It is the perfect size for two small water bottles.

    Just my two cents.

Zafota, is there something specific you are looking for? I typically don't use anything from the disc; I download the latest versions.

On an unrelated note, mine is going in for a power pin problem again. What a lemon.

The "new" G53 you are asking about should be the Asus G55.

Feel free to browse the forums and you may want to post in the "Which laptop should I buy?" guide What Notebook Should I Buy?

I can't post any answers for you there, but I can at least point you in the right direction if you are not sure if you want to go with an Asus laptop.

I wouldn't call some of the other laptops "better" but there are more options if you are looking at a laptop with a different graphics card.

If you wait until Windows 8 is released that may be a while, later this year. You can always upgrade your operating system later if you would like but Windows 7 is an excellent operating system right now.

    Alright,

I know that the power pin problem is well known for the entire G53 line for Asus.

To avoid this problem, I've got the 90 degree adapter for the charger and a replacement power pin in case I need to solder a new one in if it breaks.

Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial for opening up the laptop and getting inside the motherboard to solder in a new Power Pin if I have to????

OK, here's one. Power pin problem AGAIN. Sending my G53 in for the...third time, I think. (I'm starting to lose count.)

I own seven Asus laptops (2xG74, G53, G51, N51, 2xBamboo U43). I'm happy with the two G74s, the G51 and the N51 (but of course the latter two are old).

That's a terrible success rate, Asus. Time for me to start thinking about switching manufacturers, I'm afraid.

Owning G53JW-XA1, i rarely have TDR with Nvidia 301.42, PSOD with 296.10, black video display with 285.62! Poor Nvidia, so Asus's GTX 460 is now trash!

Is there a fully, modern stable driver for G53JW guys!??? How about 306.97?

    Thanks a lot!

Using 306.97 so far no issue and have been trying windows 8 on it. You might want to check your Event logs or BSOD it might be software conflict issue.

I don't think it's neither a software conflict nor a hardware defect. Prior to 301.42, i didn't get any TDR. I always check event log and see no error related to this TDR, only Nvidia's warning about TDR when it happens. Did you have any issues with GTX 460 using 301.42? Nvidia really sucks. I used numerous machines and my G53JW is the first one i had TDR with high-end Nvidia GPU. Really sorry and angry.

I just sent mine in for the fourth time with a broken AC pin. I kicked up a fuss since the warranty was about to expire, and they offered to replace it for free with a G55VW.

So despite the multiple repairs with this model, I'm sticking with Asus for their customer service. And because my brothers and I have had about a dozen Asus laptops between us, and this is the only one that's ever had repeat problems. It really does seem like the G53 is the exception rather than the rule.

Hey guys, this may be a silly question, but here goes:

My G53JW has randomly frozen during gameplay and I had to manually restart (hold down the power button).

This has happened again after I re-loaded the game.

After another restart, this has happened randomly in Windows, after about 10 minutes of browsing.

Another restart, this time it happened again, but even sooner.

I unplugged it, took out the battery and waited. Now it's running OK, but I'm worried it will happen again, I'm also reluctant to turn on the game again.

So my question is - should I start testing it with all kinds of utilities (I'm thinking a memory test and perhaps monitoring the temperatures and fan speeds), or should I just send it to service?

EDIT: Problem persists when I go back into games, so I will send it in. But first, could someone please recommend me a program for checking temperatures and CPU/GPU fan speeds? I'm kinda baffled by this random freeze and how the laptop still works a while later... I'd like to figure out what causes it at least...

Hey, not sure if this forum is dead but I have a question. I have gone through a read a bunch around the web and am still a bit unsure. I have on my desk a 560m that I took out of a broken g53sx-a1. There seems to be a great deal of conflicting information out there, several threads I've read state that g53 cards are all soldered to the mainboard. However, the gpu sitting on my desk says otherwise. I also have in my possession a functional g53jw-a1 which I successfully repaired. Is it possible to replace the JW's 460m with the SX's 560m?

The card is not soldered onto the G53JW and should be the same as the SX, both are just not MXM.

It is possible to do so since both are ASUS systems, but as Meaker said you cannot use VGA card from other companies due to compatibility.

    Hello folks,

I've had a G53JW-A1 for around 18 months now, bought it used off eBay and it's out of warranty anyway.

A while back it showed up with freezing problems. I noticed that when it ran normally under light usage, it got a fair amount of WHEA Logger Events (Event ID 17, at the PCI Express root port 0x138). When it comes under load, it freezes entirely and I have to hard-reboot it so it's out of commission now. After some browsing on the subject, I've noted that I've had a lot of the typical problems with this laptop (power pin broke, keyboard lag, LVDS cable likes to unseat itself and screw with the display, etc.) - I've dealt with these one by one as they showed up, but I'm left curious about fixing this problem. I've done all the INF updates, power settings, driver configs and reinstalls I need to know it's none of those things, and it's on BIOS 211 so that shouldn't be the issue.

Since I'm something of a hobbyist, I'm looking at repairing it (an i7 with a good video card is a terrible thing to go to waste). This problem happens in G53's and G73's, as well as an HP laptop whose motherboard was manufactured by the same company at the same time. I can isolate it to being one of two components: either the motherboard itself, or the video card. Being that I've had so many other problems with integral pieces of the motherboard, I'm inclined to guess it's that, but I can't rule out a GTX460M failure.

Does anyone who's done surgery on these machines still lurk this thread? Curious to know what experiences people might have to share on hardware issues with the G53JW.

    Thanks. :D

Make sure you rule out the ram as a potential issue, run one stick at a time.

I checked my RAM and a stick was bad so I'm grateful for that suggestion which I hadn't really considered as being related to my scenario, but the fault at the PCI Express root port remains. Seems an uncommon problem, which may be a good thing in sourcing parts.

Uninstall the device, reboot the PC and check again, but if the symptom persists, then best to do a system reset/refresh, or clean reinstall.
