Hi guys am concerned about the plugin port for the power brick.. Lots of nbr members have problems with them.. Does anyone have any idea of preventing them from breaking?

Now this would make the perfect laptop for me with using Photoshop and Lightroom. Are there any laptops in Asus whom utilize an IPS panel? Are there replacement panels I can get with IPS?

There's three main things we'll have to look at for replacement panels - the mounting setup, the pin-type, and the location of the connection. The mounting setup isn't usually a big deal, even if things don't match up there are other methods of securing the screen in place. The pin-type is more important, if we know how many pins the G53 uses it should be simple to get a matching replacement for an easy swap. The connection location can be a pain - if the connection on the old lcd and the new one are not in the same place, it requires an extension (and another part to buy) but is definitely doable.

It will be a while before I have time to disassemble my own unit to find the current AUO model number. If anyone else find the information let me know and it will speed the process along.

You definitely won't get much more than 2hrs 15min.

I had it on 25% processor and level 2 brightness to achieve similar results.

Netbooks are pretty cheap now too. They're about 229$-ish at local retail stores (4-5hr battery). Other than that, you could always get a second battery.

If you got money to spend, the alienware m11x lasts 7hrs and it's on sale for 550$ (incl coupon) and probably less if you go to the outlet and use a 20% off coupon on a refurb.

If only Super Mario Bros X had online netplay, then we could partner up and help me get past level (60something, forgot) lol.

Tell me about it. I'm hoping a future update will add netplay, it already has split-screen co-op so we're halfway there - I'll have to keep bugging the creators on the message board.

So does it run well on your lappy? I have it on my dinodesktop, and it seems to be fine; just takes forever to load up (somewhere like 1-1.5minutes).

It runs really well and takes somewhere between 12-14 seconds to boot cold. I also picked up a xbox360 [controller -ed] for christmas which makes it a bit easier to play compared to the keyboard.

I play with my ps3 controller. You can too, or with your xbox remote too via usb. If you need drivers for either one, google "MotionJoy".

Can anyone comment on the difference in speed with a SSD? I am thinking about putting one in once the warranty is over.

One word....... Massive (If you configure it correctly)

Expect near instant app opening/ super fast game loading. Bit long battery life

BTW why wait until finish your warranty, by that time your laptop is bit old.

I go from hitting the power button to a use-able desktop in under 20 seconds. Photoshop loads within 5-6 seconds from a fresh boot, and the machine generates absolutely no noise or vibration. I'm very happy with the addition, it was the only thing I had added to my G53.

I've been shopping for an SSD but it makes me a little nervous. Newegg shows a lot of failures (~10% failure rate in the first couple of months?!). Are the bad reviews due to early production glitches that have been ironed out or people that don't know what they're doing to configure them, or are there legitimate issues with those things?

If I can make an SSD work well and (more importantly) last a while, I'm going for it!

I went with the 2nd gen intel for reliability and speed (currently at 5 eggs on newegg), but had to pay more for the name. There's not too much as far as care, I turned off indexing and defragmenter, as well as any background processes that might be reading or writing to the hard drive when I don't need them.

So I have the problem that I've seen several users complaining about: the male part of the AC connection has come out of the power socket, stuck in the female end of the power cable. I currently live in Japan so I sent my computer in to the local repair centre to have it fixed under my global warranty, and they're trying to charge me $400 to replace the motherboard :|

Others who've had this problem, you all got your RMA carried out under warranty, right? I've been going crazy for the last two weeks being bounced back and forth between call centres in Japan and the USA, and nobody on either end seems to be able to communicate with anybody else in order to confirm the problem I'm having.

At the moment it's looking like my only option is to send the computer to the USA for repairs, which is a total joke - what's the point of a global warranty if I can't get my notebook repaired in the country I live in? :|

Edit: I didn't bypass any language filter. I posted a sequence of asterisks; they weren't "disguising" anything, they completely replaced a word. "****" is not profane.

I have the g53 from sig for almost 1 week already and last evening I did the first battery test.
I used battery saving setting, but i forgot to turn off the keyboard lights
It lasted 2h and 30 mins till it reached 10% battery charge (reporting another 15 minutes of runtime). All i did was almost non-stop internet browsing with several tabs of IE8 on wireless connection. The screen never dimed/turned off while on battery.

I will have to retest it cause I'd really like to know how much difference the keyboard lights does

hi,i am new here, will be buying the g53jw-3de model.
i have a question, does the lower screen resolution makes it better suited for demanding games than the "a1" model?i am buying this model primarily as its native resolution is low,and the 3d can be turned off easily,so in 2d,i might be getting better fps, shouldn't i??

whats your thought guys, soon i will be joining this lounge i guess :D
    please reply

Personally I'd go for Full HD resolution. I played Crysis DX10 FullHD without issues (Settings : High/No AA).

I'd say go for A1 model. extra screen resolution will help you alot in documents/web browsing.

you are right in a way but i am all for gaming and hardcore gaming only..dont intend to use 3d either...just that feeling that i will have significantly higher fps with 1366*768 than with full hd as in case of a1...in games like metro crisys, this would come in handy...so is my belief and choice right?? :)

I never found any fps issues with Crysis, but you can always play low resolution with FullHD screen. Graphic card will upscale it for you.

thanks,i was thinking of future games like metro and some more demanding games..so lower resolution does help you gain fps right..?actualy i heard about this theory..so just making sure.. :D

also i was told that a native lower resolution looks much better than a fhd lowered to the same resolution...another theory..just not sure about either..your thoughts?

    @ dr.coool: you are right,
lower res = better frame rate
native res = better looks than lower res

on the other side in lower res you might get jaggies which would require some degree of AA while in higher res the jaggies mite be less visible

thanks for the tip bro.. :D ...i intend to buy the notebook in your sig...so it does actualy performs better than a1(fhd screen) in gaming right?1366 in native resolution with AA on is not bad right...as compared to a1

Well, i got an i5-460m version which should be slightly slower in gaming than the more common i7-740qm... also cheaper :D

My scores at stock clocks are as follows:
    3D Mark Vantage - P8561
    3D Mark 11 - P1721

Tbh, for 15,6" i find that 1366x768 to be too low and 1920x1080 too much... I would preffere something like 1600x900 or 1680x1050 for a 15.6 display

Edit: Before anyone asks, the 3D Mark Vantage scores were taken using an external monitor, an HP LP2065

I just had the same problem. Contacted ASUS support and will ship them the laptop this weekend.
So how long did it take to get your Laptop back? And did you have to pay for the repairs or was it covered by the warranty?

Would this machine run WoW maxed? or semi maxed?

And is it portable? I am not talking about it being ultra portable, but could you take it to school to do work on? Or is it to chunky? I am going to check it out for myself sometime this weekend, but would like some input :)

And im talking about the A1

TBH I'm quite busy atm and the only things I played on it are the 3D Marks :D

I picked the 3D version cause my supplier had only the following models in stock:
i5 with 1366 screen, 4GB ram, 500GB hdd, really cheap (no w7 license)
    i5 with 3d 1366 screen, 4GB ram, 500GB hdd, +200 euro, (w7 home premium oem included) *** my pick ***
    i7 with 1366 screen, 6Gb ram, 1000 GB hdd, +250 euro (no w7 license)

as someone else on the forum already posted, the 1366 screens should do something else, in this case 3D ;)
If i had the option of a FHD screen I would probably picked it.

SO to conclude this wall of text: I would pick the 1366 only with 3D, else i would get the FHD screen

Ok screen replacement crowd, I'm making slow progress. I believe the screen the G53 uses is the AUO B156HW01 v5 (special thanks to Mythlogic of Mythlogic Computers who has been very helpful) and I'll further verify this part number when I crack my own system open to do some snooping.

I'm looking at possible replacements currently - AUO makes a 1080p matte screen that may do the trick, but I'm also considering 1600x900 options (high enough to provide clarity, but lower than 1080p to add some additional FPS).

    Hi,
can g53jw-3de play metro 2033 at ultra high settings(with 3d off of course)??
if so,what is the expected fps?

display quality-wise..is (native 720p+maxed out settings)>(fhd lowered to 720p+maxed out settings OR medium settings at fhd)?

Display quality is a tough one. If you run at 720p you might have to turn on anti-aliasing or else the jagged edges will be very pronounced (which will hit the frame rate), whereas with most games at 1080p you won't need to use AA.

As far as which will give you a better framerate (720p+AA vs 1080p noAA) it seems like the first option is still superior.

Now, what I cant answer is whether 720p+AA at max will look or perform better than 1080p with noAA at medium or high.

can i run metro 2033 maxed out in the "3DE" model with AA and 3d disabled?how much fps can i expect??

do i need a laptop cooling pad if i overclock the gpu to say 800/1600/1400 (core/shader/memory)?? or will this machine run cool without it....

i am thinking the "3DE" model is a better choice than "A1" or "G73JW-3D"...reason:

1.lower native resolution gives you a lot of fps gain in demanding games..better performance guaranteed for future.

2.you can watch 3D movies and pictures(you at least have the option)

3.gtx 460m combined with HD resolution screen gives you good enough fps even for 3D gaming..

this are my thoughts,i may be wrong to some! :D

On the A1 with the 460M, I'm only getting a measly 6003 points on the GPU portion of 3dmark vantage. That's really low for a 460M. Any suggestions or reasons why it is underperforming so much? Usually people get 7400-8000.

Don't put stress on it. I don't know what kind of magical answer you're looking for here.. but I don't think asking this question over again is going to get you it. I haven't had a problem with mine yet and I hook and unhook it regularly throughout the day, so I assume it's a problem with some batches and not a problem with others.

Stop lying, even SLI/Crossfire fully configured desktop gaming computers are lagging when shadow setting is on ultra.

Emphasis added, but there is the issue. You need to plug and unplug carefully. It isn't a problem with the equipment, the problem is with how the user treats it.

Just tried Avatar 3D on my G53jw... and OMG!
It really put things in a new perspective and the framerate is really smooth with 3d enabled in DX10 all maxed out and AA x4.

Have to admit that I got the 3D G53 planning to sell the 3D Glasses and get back some cash, but not anymore :)

has anyone managed to put one of the new 120hz pc gaming monitors into a g53 yet? I'm about to buy a new 23" 120hz gaming monitor (hdmi 1.4), and want it to be able to put out 120hz via hdmi.. Just wondering on peoples results yet? I'm a little skeptical!

Common sense tells me it should work as long:
    - the new monitor supports true 120hz (3D specifically) and not some interpolated/fake 120hz like my own Samsung UE32C6500
    - the new monitor supports hdmi 1.4
    - you use a certified hdmi 1.4 cable
