    Hi everyone,

I want to get a bluetooth mouse to use with this laptop. My initial search has lead me to Amazon.com: Logitech V470 Bluetooth Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks (White): Electronics and Amazon.com: Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Mac/Windows: Electronics. However, I'm hesitant to get one of these because of reviews about the mice going to sleep frequently and taking a bit of time to wake up and disconnects.

Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions for a Bluetooth mouse. I currently have a Microsoft wireless USB mouse but I am worried the USB receiver is gonna break the port on of these days if I accidentally hit it.

    Thanks!

Wow. I feel incredibly silly right now.

Turns out that unresponsive keyboard problem was caused by my laptop thinking that my Intuos4 was the keyboard during startup. Once I unplugged the tablet and restarted, arrow keys work just fine on the GRUB screen. xD

I have to give Asus credit; Linux may have been an absolute [expletive forcibly deleted by this forum's swear filter] to install on this laptop, but once I succeeded in doing so pretty much everything worked out of the box, including the microphone. That's certainly more than I'll ever be able to say for my recently-deceased overheating HP POS xD

Lem, that is the one! Get it! V470 is ONLY Mouse that I use other than a Revolution v5500 by Logitech, which the full-sized BlueTooth laser mouse for desktops, that goes with the Revolution v5500 keyboard.

I have three (3) of the V470 mice sitting here, for 3 different laptops and to a one they always work 100% of the time, never falter, and always track true and steady as can be. You gotta love Logitech's methods, just do not install the latest Logitech BT software, that is my recommendation.

If you have any older Logitech products, like I do, see if you can install v4.2.b40 for example of Logitech's software suite called "Setpoint", and that will work a treat with the V470 mouse. I don't understand the latest and greatest version of Setpoint, which you get off the Logitech web site, or via Logitech Update when you install the older versions...so caution there!

The new version of Setpoint sucks rotten eggs!

But yes, the V470 mouse (in blue-green if you can get it) Rocks! They just work, and work seamlessly and well with Asus BT software. How did you happen to come across them, by Amazon.com search perhaps?

I have been using the V470 BT mice for almost 2 years with my notebooks, and wouldn't know what to do without them...

You've got some stuff to learn about laptops!

No.1--they will try to boot off of ANYTHING in their ports, or shall I say connected to them any way you can think of, conceive of...therefore unplug everything/anything at boot up time or you risk an endless loop of BIOS going on and on and on...that is DVD+/- or CD ROM/BluRay drives, external HD's, any type of eSATA HD or FireWire HD, especially USB HD's

No.2--peripherals such a Intuos or other brands of tablets, or keyboards, should also be unplugged *until the Asus Splash screen* shows up, and the boot options are exercised

No.3--unplug all USB Flash Drives from the ports until the boot sequence is done and you have a desktop, otherwise the machine will try and boot off the USB flash drive and go into infinite loops in BIOS

There's all kind of caveats to laptop use vs desktops, although more exotic desktops will also try and boot off of anything connected to them also, so in general watch out at Boot Up Time! Keep things out of the ports until and unless you DO want the machine to boot off of the item...

That's also more than you can say for Windows! Haha!

Glad you got it going Cervante. I was also impressed with how everything is recognized and installed properly on Ubuntu. Even the bluetooth on my 208 BIOS machine works like a charm, while it doesn't in Windows. Funny that the linux community can write better drivers for Asus than Asus can! Ubuntu RIPS on this machine too...

Haven't tried Fedora yet, but with Ubuntu running like a dream, I don't think I'm going to have to try Fedora at all...

Next I'm going to try an Ubuntu/Boxee Live boot and see how that goes. Could be hairy given it will need to use the HDMI port on Linux.

    Back with more details later.

    UPDATE on CLEAN INSTALLS:

    - I just got a notification from Windows that "The Windows 7 Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation". This is using the ISO links I gave and the prod key on the bottom of the machine.

I will try to use the phone system to get the key validated, but my guess (as I postulated in my first post) is that an OEM key can't be used to validate a retail version of Windows.

I backed up my partition before the clean install, so it's no big deal if they give me a hard time, but I wanted you all to know that it's not as easy as just using your product key with any Windows 7 Home ISO.

Will keep you all posted on this.

    R.

UPDATE: Validation was successful using the telephone system. Clunky method, but it worked.

    10Gb ram SUCCESS!

I got my 4Gb stick from newegg yesterday...then installed it last night booted up & continued my n00bish rampage in MW2, BUT then I encountered the dreaded BSOD. I've never fully experienced it on this machine except for one time with that sorry arse webcam's driver.

Anyway I checked Everest (The best info./benchmarking software, I just love running it on this laptop, Rex knows why) & it says that the 4Gb stick is on the "2nd Dimm" @_@ Oops! Sooooo I put it in the respected "Dimm 1" Booted up ran some benchmarks(On Everest :) 3ds Max, be it Maya...Ps Cs5 & The games? well every thing is purrrfect @_@!

Cleaning cloth you say? what is wrong with the Asus one? works like a charm for moi, BTW I might try Klear :] just in case.

@rexrzer727, thanks for all the well wishes. Well, my piano exams were much easier than yours. I took mine with ABRSM and all I had to do was to do a practical exam with the examiner overlooking me and grading me based on scales, sight reading and 3 selected pieces, along with some aural tests! I really have severe stage fright, so I'm relieved that I didn't have to do a public performance. The largest audience I performed to was for my class of around 35 people. That was freaking scary!

Just FYI, on the day which I changed my signature, I wasn't a certified Grade 8 Pianist yet, but I am now finally one! Just received my results from ABRSM and I barely passed with a score of 112 out of a maximum possible 150. But nevertheless, that's a pass and that's alright. I'm aiming for a diploma now, but I have no idea how long that will take. I'm extremely happy with my results because I failed last year with a miserable score of 84!

Thanks again for all the well wishes. I will study real hard for the O-Levels, although I will still browse around here on a daily basis!

    Hi Rex,

Thanks for the recommendation. I just ordered the Logitech V470 mouse! Logitech, Intel and Asus should pay you commission. =D. I got the white mouse because it was about $15 cheaper and matches with the LapDesk cooler. Thanks for the heads-up regarding the Logitech drivers. I'll see how Windows handles the mouse and then use the Logitech drivers if necessary.

    Regards,

    Lem

You did well to check with Everest on SODIMM placement, as that's the one utility that gives the whole, total picture about RAM including placement and correct slot ID. There's a diagram of the DIMM slots in our sorry-arse "manual" for the laptop also (right!) that identifies the slots correctly too, in case people don't have Everest Ultimate handy. :radar:

The point being that for Dual Channel operation you want the larger DIMMs in slots 1 & 3 in a 4-slot arrangement; for a single, large DIMM you do want that in slot 1, and no other, for correct placement. You also *test* a laptop's DIMMs (if you need to test them, that is) in slot 1, or if in an emergency you only have 1 DIMM you want that in slot 1 also. ;)

If the laptop had triple-channel operation going for it the story is a bit different, and for instance in my EVGA Classified motherboards the DIMM slots are identified as DIMM Slot 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 also...they use the "0" designation which IS proper for triple-channel mode ID, and you install a single DIMM in slot 0 vs slot 1 in Dual Channel operations...I only mention this because I deal with this sort of thing whenever I am trouble-shooting a PC specifically, and the DIMM slot arrangement is critical to any sort of testing also.

Question: Is the new 4GB SODIMM 1333mhz, and/or for that matter are ALL the SODIMMs 1333Mhz? It seems that ALL G51JX-A1/X1's come with 1333Mhz RAM unless the retailer actually goes in there and cheaps-out a unit, which has happened by the way, but I am just checking up on your situation I guess to confirm what I already think to be the gospel with these laptops: Asus uses the 1333Mhz SODIMMs exclusively for good reasons. :spinny:

How is your throughput with 10GB? Did you compare it with what I came up with for 12GB RAM testing? It should be pretty good, but I do think that 12GB is still optimum, and at your earliest convenience you should go ahead and get a 2nd 4GB SODIMM to match the one you now have and go with 12GB RAM...I know, I know, can't leave well enough alone! :twitchy:

As for Newegg.com... what brand did they furnish you with? I don't do that much business with the Egg as they charge sales tax in California, and that can amount to significant tallies when you purchase as much stuff as I tend to do, but there are times that I *do* get things from them--specifically they stock the best array of G. Skill RAM on planet earth, and that I like a lot! I tend to purchase my RAM there because of that...especially DDR3 for desktops that I am building, either for a friend, relative, or straight out contracting in a business server application. People have come to expect great PC servers out of my shop the past couple of years, and I tend to accommodate when asked...!

Let us know about your 10GB success even more when you have a chance, and any subjective comments are always welcome also, way to go!

OK, you're excused from your normal "responsibilities" here... We just wondered what happened to you, that is all, so it's good to learn that you still have your G51JX-A1 (Asian option group!) with all the goodies, and that you have an active interest in computing, but for now it's been pushed aside for more important things, namely YOUR EDUCATION! :p

As for Mac OS X Snow Leopard 64-bit in one of these computers, I am going to give it a go tomorrow, given the chance and opportunity, just for grins! At least I plan on installing it this weekend, time and circumstance being perfect this particular weekend for such a thing. I am going to pull my SSD and use a spare Hitachi 500GB conventional HD (7200RPM retail HD) for the deed though, will not be polluting my precious OCZ Vertex 2 SSD with an install of God know what, exactly! :eek2:

The SSD only has 112GB space on it to start with, and I am using almost 45GB for the Windows 7 HP 64-bit OS and applications, my important media programs and apps, plus the games that I play when I have some free time (practically never, but I try...), COD:WAW, GTA:IV, Crysis, various arcade games, especially Pinball 3D and my newest favorite Mafia II! Those things take up some space! So out the SSD comes for any project like OS X Snow Leopard, especially! :)

I have no idea why I am doing this exercise other than just to do it, but it sounds interesting and there's always a challenge around the corner to do if one has time and the inclination. I thought about using the SSD and Paragon's Hard Disk Manager Suite 10's ability to "Hide" an OS from another OS, and just use the SSD for both OS's, but I think not...I just can't risk screwing up my precious SSD and its precious space, which is virtually none.

I will let you know how it goes tomorrow on the Snow Leopard front, but for now I am wishing everyone a great weekend, and hope that your G51JX's continue to operate fantastic!

Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I have a quick question!

I will admit I've only read the first few pages of this thread so my question may have been answered already...

Has anyone else had typing issues? On average, out of every 100-200 characters I type there is an unread key press. My BIOS version is 204 (12/25/09) on a G51JX-X5. This isn't a huge deal because I don't write that many papers these days, but it's still annoying.

    OPTIONAL READING:
I'm also interested in improving the GPU's performance. Benchmarking in Mafia II gave me about 30 FPS average and I think performance started to drop after I hit an 85-deg. C limit. Would some push-pull cooling help or should I look into overclocking? Seems like heat is the limiting factor...

Any advice or links would be very helpful. :D

    Thanks,

    Eric

I myself have also noticed that sometimes the keys arn't registered but, it doesn't happen enough for me to consider it a problem, and you said that you have 204 bios... That is a CRAP!!! Bios, must get rid of, upon start up with my laptop I got a bluescreen, when I updated to Bios 206(advice from rex) I was fine, no problems wat so ever, been running a month now ;)

About Mafia II, if you are noticing that you are getting lag in game then look into updating your graphics card or getting the recommended 197, via the beginning of this forum, I have also played this game and have not had a single slow down!!!, and my graphics card got as hot as 91 degrees C(84 degrees C with a cooling pad (broke now), as far as framerate idk, I uninstalled Mafia II because I had beat it and I prefer to keep a neat and tidy Laptop, with only software I used....

You should not have to overclock to get that games to run clean

Excuse Mr. 253 and our "conversation", but a budding pianist needs encouragement, ya know? As for your issues:

    1) GET RID of BIOS v204, it is SLOW DEATH :( and has all kinds of issues...but

    2) Update to BIOS v206 ONLY, do not pass/go to v207/-v208! They will cause BlueTooth Failures! Just v206 is safe, as far as we know anyway. :D

EDIT: In case you don't know already, use the BIOS's own build-in Updater system for updating BIOS, do NOT use the software GUI system, that can be DEATH to your laptop if it screws up...BIOS updating in BIOS itself is safe, and trouble-free. It's called "EZ FLASH" and it's on the 1st page in BIOS, the 1st screen, learn to use it!

BIOS v206 should "fix" just about everything I can think of, along with updating your graphiX driver to one of the newest will help also. UNINSTALL the old driver first, COMPLETELY, do NOT nuke and pave a driver over an old one, ALWAYS UNINSTALL the old driver, RESTART, then install the new driver, RESTART AGAIN, then you are Golden...use a REGISTRY CLEANER/FIXER also, after such dirty work...

We recommend the free Glary Registry Cleaner, Google it, it's free, and effective! If you haven't been keeping up your Registry with maintenance it could be the cause of all kinds of things also, slowdowns, bad performance, bad typing, whatever, so paleeeze try Glary Registry Cleaner and let it fix the hundreds and hundreds of torn, frayed and damaged Registry entries that you must have if you have not been using a Cleaner/fixer up to this point.

Between using a good BIOS, updating your graphiX driver to one of the newest ones, and using a Registry Cleaner/fixer you should be all set, after that... That's a lot of changes, and if they don't help then something is wrong somewhere in China, but those things help EVERYBODY, even my cause, and I practice all of them, one by one, and collectively, and I have a super running G51! :) !

FYI I recommend the newest of the new nVidia GraphiX Drivers, which is v260.x.x Beta, which you can get at the nVidia.com web pages/support/downloads area, as the newest Beta driver includes many, many new and upcoming features, especially for HDMI and BluRay enhancement, and on-screen controls including "Drag and Drop" dual-mode view for using more than one LCD display, or HDMI and LCD display, ie multiple display "madness" such as it can become. ;)

At least update to the newest of the nVidia drivers, which is v.258.96 is my recommendation, but then again I am always bored with the status quo and tend to try out new things if they are proving to work well with our laptops. :D

Good luck, and I hope this will help you out some, it's meant to!

 That's the most informative and helpful reply I've ever gotten on any forum ever. Cheers mate!

I updated my nVidia to v258.96 and ran Glary Registry Repair to find 1802 (yes, one-thousand eight-hundred two) registry errors on my two week-old machine!

If I don't report back tomorrow morning after my BIOS update, you may assume the worst...

...But if everything goes well, I expect to read this thread from beginning to end before I get to any of my homework for Monday. :D

Thanks Rex, you're a real pal.

    OK

I nearly had a heart attack after updating the BIOS when I got a black screen with the message: "Missing operating system". I had stored the BIOS file at C:\BIOS and thought that may have been the problem. I restarted pressed F2. After going through the startup options I realized it was trying to boot from my flash drive that I'd forgotten to remove. Phew! As soon as I took out the flash drive and restarted, it was just fine. If I restart my computer with a flash drive in, will it always try to boot from it? Is there a setting I need to change?

Windows is working. Time to do some testing ;)

I see that you've had a busy day of it, reallllly busy day! Hah-Hah! :D

The webcam is a bit of a punchy subject here, as some of us have little trouble/performs well, no issues, whilst others complain, complain, complain about the dang thing until the cows come home and still don't resolve the issues: slow response for Skype or other 3rd-party apps and blurry vision, and/or poor overall picture quality et al. :(

I have no issues whatsoever with my webcam, but then I've been told I have "The Golden G51JX-A1" many times, and I'm starting to believe it! :rolleyes2: The webcam just works fantastic in my G51, matched Chicony driver and all but it continues to work 110% no matter what I do with it, so I dunno, either the thing is aok fine or people hate it, can't get the right driver for it, etc etc...go figure! :nah:

I am glad that your BIOS update to v206 has gone well, once you removed your 'Booting' USB Flash drive! Hah-Hah! This must be your 1st or maybe 2nd laptop? Laptops tend to try and boot from ANYTHING that is plugged into them, included in my statement are anything/everything from Flash Drives, to USB HD's, FireWire HD's, external and peripheral devices, from scanners, printers, whatever it is the laptop will *try* to boot off of it, include it in the BOOT sequence somehow, just amazing what happens!

I recommend when booting a laptop that EVERYTHING is removed from the USB, FireWire, eSATA ports, bar none, then you can replace the things afterward, after the "Golden Asus" signature flash screen is shown, then you can plug in anything you choose, but NOT for the BOOT Ini/sequence, it is just trouble, trouble, trouble personified to do that...beware about doing any BOOTing with items plugged into the ports, ANY ports!

The only things that seem to be benign with respect to the above statements are things with drivers in them, assigned to them, ie such as a printer or maybe an external device like a video camera or digital SLR (DSLR) camera, things like that are immune to "starting up syndrome" problems, et al. I like to use a network printer with my laptops so I don't have anything plugged into them during boot sequences, and that is any of my several laptops get the same treatment (save for my wife's MacBook Pro, that's a different animal altogether and we won't go there now...), so network (aka wireless printers) printers are a good thing, and are to be encouraged in home/office use for laptops and desktops both!

As for increasing FPS speeds with BIOS updates, and driver updates, well that is a misnomer and can't be accommodated much either. Driver updates will yield stability and enhanced game performance in critical situations, controverted stressed-out parts of games where the action is furious and intense, now THAT is where an improved driver will benefit FPS performance, or maybe in testing like 3DMark06/Vantage from our friends at FutureMark Corporation, those types of tests. What you want to be experiencing in the laptop with the new drivers and BIOS is stability, sublime and peaceful stability itself, as that is what we strive for, search for, and want with any high-performance job like a G51 laptop...the rest will follow, but that's why we go through these improvements and do them in the 1st place. :spinny:

I am happy with your experience with Glary Reg Cleaner/fixer, as that was quite a slew of errors that got reported and hopefully fixed! Good for you! Now keep using it whenever you restart the laptop, just get in the habit of using Glary Reg Cleaner at your discretion really, anytime is great, and you cannot use it too much, you dig? Registry errors are the root of many bad things in the Windows OS, just like Directory Tree errors are the scourge of the Mac OS X Snow Leopard/Leopard too, and they are to be avoided!

You have done well with learning about these "enhancements" to your new laptop...and it will love you for doing the maintenance you will be using Glary for now, and in the future...it's all good with Glary Reg Cleaner! Your chores now accomplished, you should be able to vanquish many a foe in your games without further ado, and the performance of your laptop will be 100% to the good with that nice, fresh install of v206 BIOS, done the right way, no less...way to go! :notworthy:

As for my suggestions and answers: I don't mind giving the advice if it means something to people, and all that I ask for in retrospect, the "Thanks" that I want so to speak, is a humble Rep Up in the notebookreview.com manner, where you can comment to the powers that be here that I am being hospitable and helpful. That I don't mind a bit! So if you feel that I've helped you, or anybody else for that matter, my Rep Doors are always open for business! The more Reps Up the better you know, that's what I ask of my suggestions, no more, no less, thanks!

I am glad that I did manage to help you through the day, and that the suggestions were used and well liked--that is great, just great! Thanks for the kind compliments, and with a Rep Up for me you will just make my day glow and be richer for it than it was before, that's all I could ever ask for here at these fine pages where the spirit of helpfulness is always a good thing to be doing for the nice people...

Yes, this would be my second computer. My first was a Dell Inspiron E1505 that I had for 4 years and did 3 re-installations of windows on. I'll do another in the near future as it is no longer my primary rig. Unfortunately after all of the BIOS and driver updating I did, my main gripe is still lingering... The computer is still missing letters I know I've typed. I am not crazy! (or a bad typist)

Well I spent much of yesterday thinking about cooling solutions. 1st I tried out my new Cooler Master U2 and did some moving around of fans. Then I started contemplating the need for a powered USB hub and quickly became overwhelmed with the number of products available. Next I considered pumping some more juice into the fans with a common plug-swapped wal-wart. Maybe.

I want to super-cool my computer on a budget so I started looking at fans I could mount out the back of the cooling pad. The holes in the aluminum would be perfect for bolting on PVC or "custom"-molded sheet metal tubes and vents. I was thinking about using this little guy and routing what would be the outlet of it to key areas in need of cooling:

Newegg.com - AOC FC-2000 PCI Slot Case Cooler

I then looked at the shortcomings of the laptop case itself and how there weren't even vent holes over the GPU. Does anyone have a link for panel replacements? I would buy one to cut holes in and then fit grills to it.

Next I looked at adjusting fan speeds through various software programs. First I tried MSI Afterburner to get a taste of overclocking but the fan speed adjustment was grayed out. Then I tried Speedfan. Again, grayed out. I finally downloaded the nVidia System Tools add-on. No dice. Is adjustin the fans in any way possible? BIOS, software, or other?

I asked this question on the official ASUS facebook page. The reply I got was from a lad in the UK suggesting I replace the CPU and GPU thermal compound and do the "Copper Mod". After a few seconds of googling, I found this, and it looks fairly similar to how the G51JX is laid out.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...m1330-nvidia-geforce-8400m-gs-copper-mod.html

However, being able to "do the copper mod" requires there to be a sub-par heat transfer medium between the GPU and the copper conductor, correct? In the case above, there is a "cooling pad" between them. Was this put in to eliminate grounding loops or for some other reason?

Today I spent a lot of my time debugging my huge packet loss issue that emerged over the weekend. I think the main cause was that I had my old computer and my new computer shared the same name  Once I corrected this, there was a noticeable improvement using Winping. I then turned off UPnP and messed with Windows Firewall settings. Good triumphed over evil.

I'm trying to keep this whole thing in perspective... I really am. "It's just a laptop." YES, I KNOW it's just a laptop, but look at all the fun, interesting, and intricate features I can mess with! I am an engineer after all and even as a kid I never just "played" with LEGOs. I built things, tore them apart, and built new things! In high school my friends and I would build wood ramps for snowskating [see wikipedia page] and 5' to 6' roll-ins out of snow. I'd say we spent 80% of our time building, 20% snowskating. Go figure.

Well that's all I've got. There were a few questions in there that could use answering if you've got the time. Again I really appreciate everyone's help, especially Rex's. I think I repped you on Sunday, did I not? ;)

Anyways, I need to sleep for a couple hours before class starts. Scratch that. I can take a 1-hour nap LOL

    -Eric

PS: My backspace key just started squeaking when I press close to the outside edge. Keyboard lube?

There are no fan adjustments save for using a modded ini file in BIOS, and then we get into this problem; How do I get it back to Default Values? Hah-Hah! Answer: You can't! So leave the fan ini's ALONE, thank you, he recommended! ;)

We've got a "Smart Fan" in the G51JX-series notebooks, and I have noted that mine is particularly powerful when necessary. I was using the laptop to crunch a rather substantial Folding@Home Work Unit last night, and it was really, really stressing out the CPU, GPU, and fan system...so much so that I noted there is yet a "4th tier" fan speed! How about them apples?! :D :D :D

The GPU/CPU fan not only has a ramped up "4th tier" fan speed which is higher and more powerful than the 4500RPM "top speed" that I previously thought was maximum RPM's, but the fan control software can ramp that 4th tier speed up and down at will and solve a Hot Spot or two in the CPU for instance, keeping the temp even during an extended run in a FAHome WUnit under control! KUHL!!

That 4th tier fan speed is as high as 5500RPM's nice people, and that is Humming Along for our little GPU and CPU fan, the chassis's only real fan of any measure, and certainly one that gets a workout bar none when doing extensive rendering, FAH, SETI, OCCT, PRIME95, or the dreaded LinX 0.6.3 test from Hell Itself!

Everest Ultimate v5.5.x.x charted my fan's ramping up and down through that 5300-5500RPM apparent ceiling, its top performance capability during that extended run last night, and amazed, I just watched in a sort of trance while the software, and hardware did its thing and the CPU got notably cooler quickly, efficiently, and without any problem really! Double KUHL!! :chatterbox:

I don't know how that fits into your needs, but just thought I'd mention it considering all the head scratching that you are doing with the new laptop, apparently! :confused2:

@Kibble Fat, I also have keyboard lag issues on my laptop. I do not know what is causing it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the synaptics driver from the Asus website for our laptop. I am still experiencing keyboard lag.

Rex, any insights you can give me with this issue? I am currently installing the Glary Registry Cleaner program and am planning to run it.

    Thanks.

Now that you mention it, I remember someone said they removed the Synaptics driver and the keyboard issues cleared up...

    Just something else to try.

EDIT: I just tried turning off the touch pad (Fn+F9) while typing. This didn't help. Next up is Synaptics removal.

yes i confirmed that removing the Synaptics driver do indeed get rid of that, but the thing is.... i use a mouse and whenever i type, my palm would accidentally press and move the cursor and it gets to be a pain in the butt. That is why i asked rex if there is a way to disable the touchpad via bios because i dont want it at all since i use my mouse all the time. i tried to disable it through bios but i cant find where to do that. i am using bio 206 or 207 i believe.

*update* using Glarys Registry Cleaner didnt help with the keyboard lag as well. it's still consistently there

Can't you jus disable your touchpad using F9 and the touchbar at the top of the keyboard? i use a mouse to so i just do that, the only time my touchpad is active now is on startup when it asks me to input my log in password

Edit: Rex how is the Beta graphicx driver working?, I thought i might give it a try if no issues are reported (Then try my hdmi)

I tried disabling the touchpad with FnF9 without the Synaptics driver and it doesnt let me do that. Does it let you do that?

Mine always lets me disable it, but Im not sure if it would without the driver... because I still have my driver installed....

Edit: The touchpad still work without the driver correct? Then th disable function on the keyboard should work

Edit: To test i shall uninstall the driver and try turning the pad on and off(Just need to download the driver again for reinstall :))

Update: I was still able to disable my touchpad via, fn+f9, and the touchbar near the power button

    Hi Rex,

I got the V470 bluetooth mouse. I had no issues pairing it with the G51JX laptop. However, I hate that the mouse goes to sleep so soon after being idle, resulting in jumpy mouse cursor. I tried the mouse before installing the SetPoint software, after installing the included SetPoint (4.2b2), and the upgraded SetPoint. I didn't notice any improvements between them except maybe without the SetPoint I had one instance where the mouse disconnected and did not reconnect until I turned off and on. Do you have any solutions or advice on the mouse going into power saving so quickly?

I really wished we can configure the power saving on the mouse.

BTW, what don't you like about the latest SetPoint software?

The mouse seemed fine otherwise but right now I prefer the USB Microsoft Mouse since it doesn't exhibit any jumpiness. I know it's because of power saving feature but it's still annoying as hell.

    Regards,

    Lem

Well Mr. Rex, I always try to stand corrected, truth be told I'm kind of new to the "Physx" & I thought it was going to uninstall 9.10.05 13 when I remove the main driver  my bad.

I'll let you guys know the results, and I'm sure 9.10.05 14 will perform better. Thank you for the reminder Mr.Rex, I don't usually make this kinds of "mistakes"

    BTW, Mr.Jack, you can install 260.xx & don't forget to separately remove Physx 9.10.05 13 :D

Rex to the RESCUE again! This fix is pretty simple, as I'm now home and able to check out MY SETTINGS in the Mouse Control Panel...which you need to adjust similarly if you want things to be better with your V470 BT mouse!

Open up the Control Panel Dialog>Mouse Control Panel>Mouse Properties>

Now when you get to Mouse Properties there is a sub-menu to address, that will solve this 'sleeping mouse' issue 100%...

Click on 'Hardware'>then highlight "HID Compliant Bluetooth Mouse" with a single click to that line in the CP>next go to Mouse Properties>Power Management> and there is the solution!

Under Power Management Click/select "Allow this device to wake the computer", and DESELECT "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

PROBLEM SOLVED!! Your mouse will NO LONGER GO TO SLEEP when turned on, and when you are not using it simply TURN IT OFF to save power! That is all she wrote guys and gals (if any are here)! SAVE those settings, Restart the computer, and BAM! WHAM! NO MORE SLEEPY MOUSE!! :D :D :D

Additionally I have another setting enabled which helps my Mouse performance...back in the Main Control Panel area, not Mouse Properties:

Under Pointer Options, I select "Hide pointer while typing", then SAVE that setting. I have pointer speed slightly higher than neutral, nothing special there, but my mouse is stable, wakes the computer, and is FAST FAST FAST!

As for typing lag? Have you all done a Clean Install? THAT is the way to eliminate that problem 100%, and I mean my keyboard is just as responsive as my desktop's keyboard is, if not faster! The keyboard on these laptops is faster than a desktop's keyboard because there IS NO INTERACTION necessary to make the keys function, ie they work directly ON THE CONTROLLER itself, the keyboard controller, and you should have NO LAG WHATSOEVER with the G51 notebook's key strokes...I LOVE MY laptop's keyboard strokes, and there is ZERO LAG, none, nada, nothing ZILCH! Does not happen!

OK, that's it for my problem solving tonight, as I have some big film project to finish tonight by 10PM so I can render it overnight on my server (about 3TB worth of HD film!! That will take my server's CPU/RAM almost 8 hours to finish and get ready for prime time)...but then again I've done it before and this is SOP for my efforts with my equipment here in the studio. I have what it takes to get things done, and done right as rain, too! ;)

If anybody really needs me I'll have my iPhone turned on and can answer via the iPhone, but I won't be available with the G51 as it is in service on the film project as of when I finish this email to the Forum. :p

I HOPE this solves those issues for you all, because the laptop is a joy to use for me, personally, and it has nothing wrong with the keyboard or BT Logitech V470 mouse or their activities while being used...THEY ARE PURRRRFECT!

    Regarding my previous post.

I'm not too sure about you other G51Jx'ers but I found that 1 or 2 cores would spark and jump around while the others sat still or have very little usage.

So, after reading the link ( UltimateComputers.net Forum - View topic - Disable Core Parking Windows 7 Tweak may improve performance ) I gave it a shot.

So, after editing the registry and re-booting.

    I found that:

    a) all cores sat at a level usage and no "sparking" (EDIT: I should say, less sparking)
    b) an average of +12 FPS in games
    c) I feel better

Attached is a pic of my Task Manager after the edit, I suggest you compare it with yours :D

    Happy computing!

EDIT 2: The registry values before I edited them to 0, were 64. Meaning that windows had the authority to "park" up to 64% of the cores.

Are you using the BT Stack Service, aka BT Control Panel?

If you are and get that message it still doesn't mean anything in particular, just that Windows, the BT CP, and Broadcomm's drivers are not working together for a particular function, and that is par for the course with the Asus stack service, which is the ability of the BT CP to control multiple devices at the same time, amongst other things...suffice to say my BT works fine in spite of getting that particular error message at least once a day, sometimes more often...depends on usage.

If you don't use BT as a rule, then don't worry about that message--it is circular and not necessarily awe-inspiring and needing a "fix"...

Alright I tested my HDMI, and it still doesn't work, through hours of research I have come to the conclusion that some HDMI cables do not agree with COmputer to TV connections, but will still work for gaming console to tv connection...

I have also asked a friend who, loves to connect via HDMI, and he said that he had to buy two HDMI cables, one for his console and one for his tv, he to couldn't get his computer to connect to the tv till he bought another cable, so I might borrow his and see if it works.

(My other TV arrived awhile bk, HDMI still works on it :))

Is the switch on the front of the laptop flicked to the right, the "on" side?

I've tested my HDMI on a Phillips and Samsung T.V. (with different cables) both work fine.

Jack my Synaptics driver is currently uninstalled and the Fn+F9 does not turn the touchpad off. Nor does touching the touch pad for toggling near the power button. @Rex, do you have any idea why Jack can turn his touchpad on/off without the Synaptics driver and I cannot? Thank you.

    PrivateReid;

Good to hear from you finally, what's been the haps my man!!?? :rolleyes2:

School school and more school, right? I understand...Hay, it's good to read that someone else is not having issues with their HDMI, because mine has been purrrfect from the get go, no matter what or how I tend to hook it up.

Last night I had occasion to hook it up to my previously untested Samsung HDTV (720P LCD HDTV) here in my studio, which is mainly an extended monitor/desktop for my G5 Powermac M9591LL/A server, which sits under my desk and does nothing but run all WiFi here, and my media Library for iTunes and Apple TV, a 3.7TB Library contained in a FirmTek SeriTek 2eEN4 4-Bay Hot-Swap RAID Enclosure (eSATA) driven by twin 2SE2E bus masters on the Mac's PCI Express busses.

So that HDTV has principally been used for AppleTV use, not HDTV use with my laptop...the front room HDTV has been my preferred laptop partner...but what the Hay, I decided to try it there late last night and watch, "Bullitt" in BluRay, and Wham BAM thank you MAM! It worked perfect! NO issues at all!

That with a much used 10-foot HDMI Cable that had been extended from the Powermac's 2nd video card to the HDTV, so I merely swapped it over to the laptop and BAM! Fired right up, and I watched Bullitt in all its glory, HDMI's Dolby 5.1 enhanced Stereo Sound was purrfect, so no issues at all! That makes both HDTV's here that my G51 works fine with, no qualifications at all needed or necessary to that statement.

I wonder what all the fuss is about with the other guys' sets and setups!? Surely they should just work, and work well no doubt! And you say yours works fine with two different HDTV's also!! Wow! That is good news, and glad to read it here... :radar:

I don't know what advice to give them other than what I have already, and that is simply it should work plug and play...just that easily, and I have to beg off after that because working with it just frustrates me as much as it does them, I'm certain. :spinny: :spinny:

Good to hear from you...now question about Registry hack you described...is it Reversible if it doesn't work out? Let me know, please...

You must be missing control panel parts and pieces-- like the entire suite of the keyboard controls, the ATK Hot Key sequence of drivers and CP's. :(

Did you do a Clean Install, and forget something important?

That is the only possible explanation for this issue with your laptop...you are missing the components that make the Fn keys work, and that includes the ATK Hot Key and other components of the driver groups, which are extensive...about 10 items total if I recall correctly.

Do you have Everest Ultimate v5.5.x.x?

You can use Everest to check on the installed components that you have and see if there's anything missing; also Device Manager should be able to tell you about missing things, in the Hot Key assortment of parts and pieces. I'd get out the Driver/Utility DVD ROM and just reinstall all of those utilities for the keyboard, and the Keyboard Filter Driver, all of that stuff...it is pretty much obviously screwed up in your case, and needs help, or aid, or reinstalling.

Good luck and hope this helped...

    Yer, school.....

From what I've tested HDMI is just plug and play, it's weird how it could cause trouble... Everything worked fine on the the HDMI, games, movies, music ect.

As for the Registry, it should be reversible. There is no reason why it wouldn't be. In fact, I bet you could make the number whatever you want (from 0-100) because it's a %. Having said that, I wouldn't change the number to anything other than 0 and what it started on (for me 64).

I'll check about reversing it now and update this post.

EDIT: YES, YOU CAN REVERSE IT! Just follow the same steps but change the number to 64 (or whatever it happened to be on yours...probably 64)

The "Disable Core Parking" tip is awesome! Thanks for the link Reid!

I can actually see it working too with my fancy Windows gadget. Even on startup when I used to see a lot of spikes, the CPU usage stays pretty much even across all 8 cores. Spectacular.
