The point is that NEITHER Chicony driver works right now, nor does the one that is on the CD.
The default driver is the Microsoft USB 2.0mp camera, and we know that's not the right driver for this device. I used to have the Chicony driver (installed from the AIRecovery DVDs) working, so something weird is going on!
Thanks,

Holy , I got like 3 other ppl in my college program with the same laptop
2/3 get bluescreens, lawl I directed them to this site, up to them whether they read through it -
I've found MSI Afterburner 2.0.0 a little unstable so I'm switching back to 1.6.1 with out any problems.
-
-
Just out of curiousity why do these great laptops, tend to come with either defective hardware or bad installation? I've seen and read to many posts anbout bluescreening with this laptop...
Im still stickingwith this is an awsome laptop, only if its hassal free....
I just can't believe how many problems it can come with before you do a clean wipe -
1) The camera problem is solved by using Device Manager and sourcing the digital code of this particular camera, which is a sequence of letters, numbers, symbols and underscores unique to that camera, and going to the "long" list of camera drivers at the Asus Support web site and matching the code from Device Manager to one of those in the web pages. It is a bit tedious to do this, but some Asus G51's are apparently being made with "alternative cameras" vs what camera drivers were provided in the Utility DVD ROM from Asus and the choices on the regular G51JX support page for drivers for this computer.
2) Being one of those whose computer was shipped back to Asus Tech Support in the USA (mine went to the facility in Fremont, CA 94538) to remedy the BlueTooth module problem, I have to remind that this view of the issue may be unique to robbied's computer, however my Bluetooth module and motherboard BOTH were replaced by Asus Tech Support to fix the problem, a definite hardware issue. Each Bluetooth failure has to be looked at as a unique situation, as some failed after BIOS v207 (my situation), while others had the problem post BIOS 208 updating, and there is apparently a different set of issues that occur with each distinct BIOS update/BT failure.
If I were the owner of this computer I'd contact Asus Tech support and get the problem fixed rather than continue to be without BT, if BT is an important thing--as it is for my uses. The thought of sending the computer in for service is not pleasant, but sometimes it is necessary in order to get results. I doubt that robbied is going to fix this by himself: I couldn't, Asus Tech Support and I couldn't, and it took a hardware repair to bring back Bluetooth function. -
PanamaMike wrote: "Interesting, I wonder how it ranks vs. the Alienware m15x in the LCD department. Have you done a comparison? Viewing angle is the big thing for me. Also, I haven't had a chance to see the G51 in person. I did see the 73 and was a bit disappointed in the quality of the screen. Are these two Asus notebook screens comparable? I know there can be disparity between models."
Serious as a heart attack, I don't do Dell ..and Dell is Alienware m15x and all the other variants in that group...it's just something I have a personal issue with, nothing to do with your tastes, preferences, or curiosities. Both the G73 and the G51 share the same basic LED/LCD getup, the big difference in the two is, of course, the difference between the rendering from an ATI 5870M and the nVidia GTS-360M.
Now the question is did you see the G73 at Best Buy? THAT particular LCD is not the same as a retail G73JH-A1/X1 for example, so don't be fooled there. You are really crossing corners and taking the street crosswalk apart here with all your analysis and questions, and I'd suggest that you pick a reputable, easy to work with retailer/etailer and just buy one of these and see if the shoe fits. That is what I did, and I came prepared to do business with all my own toys too! (look at my signature, and all of that was installed the day I took delivery of this G51JX-A1, and I Clean Installed the OS immediately too...never even fired up the Seagate 7200RPM HD once).
If you pick Amazon.com you have very, very liberal exchange privileges in terms of sending back an errant computer, or bad choice, whatever the situation turns out to be. With virtually all the other retailers/etailers there are many caveats to buying there...not saying that there are bad choices other than Amazon.com, but the alternatives are harder, much harder to work with when it comes time to RMA or exchange a laptop!
This G51 that I own came from B&H Photo Video & Pro Audiio, after a lengthy exchange session that stretched out to almost 30 days, for example...now it did work, I did get this unit for an errant N71JX-A1 Asus notebook that EVERYTHING was baaaaad about (both Seagate HD's were faulty, the BT and WiFi worked 50% of the time, and add insult to injury when the "N" key stopped working altogether...so that was an Asus I definitely didn't want). Even with all those things *wrong* with my exchange computer, it still took a grand total of almost 2 weeks to get through B&H's RMA Dept, Sales Dept, Fulfillment Dept, and finally Shipping Dept, and I about went through the roof during the whole deal...it was truly a mind-fruck and required ultimate patience and understanding, with all of the personalities involved with such a thing!
Same deal at Amazon.com and I'd have been done in 3-5 days tops, more like 2-3 days if you ask them for any special considerations like Next Day Air shipping, for example, which they will generally toss in for Big Ticket item exchanges or RMA's. That is my recommendation to you/for you regarding one of these laptops...and it will stand the test of inquiry I assure you, as I've been there and done that with Amazon.com many, many times, both personally and for company orders, and for relatives and friend's orders all. They are the easiest company to work with for RMA's and exchanges bar none, there is no substitute.
I think you'll like this computer, but then again I really don't know *how critical* you are re displays and LCD's and angles of viewing. As I mentioned in my 2nd post about your search here, the only PC displays that rival this one are Sony displays, and I specifically point to their "satin finish" (non-reflective) 1920 x 1080 Pixels Full HD displays in the VGN-FW's top line computers, like my VGN FW-373-J/H Sony notebook that I recently sold to a dear friend in New York. I honestly think that those displays are very close to this setup. But firepower? Then we get into the issue(s) of competing video cards and graphiX controllers, and Sony's picks are often cost-conscious picks, such as the nVidia GTS-310 or GTS-330 instead of a GTS-360M such as Asus products have in them...and there is no comparison there, the Asus wins.
I hope these thoughts help you out, and I mean really help you out, because searching for a new laptop IS a daunting task, no matter how you cut the cookie. I think we can be looking at "too broad" of a spectrum of things many times, and that gets even more daunting than a search has to be, should be. Ask yourself two key questions: 1) am I in the right price range? 2) does this laptop have the key features I could be happy with, considering that I get a good unit without flaws? If your answers are affirmative then the search should be over with, and the next thing you should be doing is ordering a new laptop, vs continuing to search until time ends.
In this price range the G51JX-A1 Asus has no competition, no real competition, and if you can buy one for $1300+/- $50 it's a given that your $$$ will be well spent. I looked far and wide also before I bought into this model, and basically I ended up wasting about 2 weeks of my time and energy during that search when I ended up at the same place I started, so go figure! Buy one, see if it fits, and take it from there...you'll only know when you have the thing right there in front of you, in your hot, sweaty hands ready to take on any challenge you have in mind for it.
Mine? I torture tested my G51 with Folding@Home for 2 weeks, OCCT v3.1, LinX 0.6.3, PRIME95, and three key games that I play, and in the end it pretty much laughed at my "tests" and trials and came through all the above 100% aok fine. The only reservation I have about this laptop is that I cannot take it anywhere and use the battery for 3-5 hours, it's just not possible, end of story there. The rest? It wins the tests of time, resources, and my own prejudices and preferences hands down vs everything else out there in laptop land...and I really did try to find reasons to NOT like the thing, but it won me over anyway. -
I bought a G51Jx-X5 from J&R about two weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. It runs even the latest games just fine at high settings... in 720p, which I really can't complain about. Mirror's Edge and Just Cause 2 both run perfectly and without lag near-maxed, though I did have to overclock the GPU a bit for the latter.
However, I've recently run into a very serious problem. My college's Data Structures course requires us to use Linux, but every single distro I've tried so far refuses to install for whatever reason. It's almost as if this laptop were allergic to it.
So far I've tried, to no avail:
- Fedora 13: As soon as it gets past the splash screen, the screen shows a garbled-up version of my Windows desktop and freezes. No, I have no idea either.
- Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS: Attempted to install from LiveCD, but consistently got an [Errno:#5] Input/output error every time at exactly 36% through. Re-burning the .iso did nothing. I had a lot of fun fixing the partitions afterwards in Windows 7's native Disk Management Utility. (Incidentally, what's that unmarked 20GB partition supposed to be, anyway? I think I might have accidentally deleted it...)
- Ubuntu 10.10 beta: Same problem as Fedora 13 when trying to boot from LiveCD. When trying to boot from USB, it shows the "SYSLINUX 3.81..." message and then stops, leaving nothing but an eternally-flashing cursor.
- Arch Linux 2010.05: The LiveCD boots just fine, except that the keyboard does not respond at all on the options screen... which means I actually had to wait out the 300-second countdown before booting in default CLI mode.
At this point I'm starting to get seriously ticked off, so I decide to just screw it and set up Ubuntu inside VirtualBox. Everything's all fine and dandy until the installer fails at the exact same point it did when I tried to install it on my primary HDD. Yes, this laptop seems to hate Linux so much even trying to install inside a virtual machine fails spectacularly.
Also, it's worth mentioning that the same 'keyboard not responding' issue occurs on the Windows loader as well; whenever I force-shutdown my computer or Windows fails to start for some reason (like after unsuccessfully trying to install Ubuntu twice in a row), forcing me to wait for the default option to select. This is potentially dangerous in the sense that if I ever actually do succeed at installing some form of Linux I'll end up locked out of Windows because the arrow keys might decide to not work in GRUB.
I really like this laptop, but I don't know what else I can do to get Linux to work on it without a massive headache, and Google's been of no use. Hopefully some of you might be able to point me in the right direction...? -
hi what do i do if i did a bad bios update? i mean it wont boot after flashing the bios. Any step by step procedures? thanks
-
Which flashing procedure did you use? -
uh i used the ezflash in the bios menu. i actually cant boot in to my pc, the power turns on but it doesnt display anything
-
ok so i flashed it and it was supposed to restart so i thought it was normal then till it was long enough for me to figure out that it wont start. Then i restarted it, thought that the flashing was over. When i turned it on, 3 lights on the top beside the power button would light but that is it, no display, no lights on the keyboard, pressing the power button for 4 secs WONT shut it down, but the razer mouse is still lit. lol i need help :|

Follow these instructions to get your ISO onto a USB key. How To Install Ubuntu From A Bootable USB Drive | Liberian Geek
Since you already have the ISO downloaded, I would just point Unetbootin to your ISO using the "diskimage" option. You definitely don't want to download it twice!
Let me know how it goes... Like I said, Ubuntu has been smooth as silk for me. (and the bluetooth works after a 208 BIOS update, which kills bluetooth on Windows for some reason). Don't use this as a reason to update your BIOS to 208 - you will lose your bluetooth on Windoze.

Like I said I had to start my laptop multiple times before it finally booted
(I suggest trying othe Tech Forums) -
Okay guys, I bought this "machine" from b&hphotovideo (pretty good price at least for the month of September).
Okay here is the deal, I've already started using the Sony's Blu-ray(thanks rex for the Amazon link, but Newegg got cheaper drives & I added Verbatim 20 spindle to my order)
I'm planning on adding some memory to the 6GB already present, my question here is am I able to add 4GB to the one empty slot? and take the amount of ram from 6GB to 10GB
Also, Everest shows that 3 out of the 4 slots are occupied.
Sooo 2Gbx3 + 4Gbx1 = 10Gb Am I going to have a stable system with 10Gb -
You might want to try powering off (pull plug, pull battery) and leave it for 15 mins or so, then try popping everything back in and starting it up again.
Other than that, you might need service on that bad boy.
My fingers are crossed....

"My computer stopped working."
"What happened?"
"I flashed the BIOS using your BIOS-based flash utility and your BIOS."
"What happened when you flashed it?"
"Nothing. I followed the instructions and that was it. It stopped working. I powered it down after the flash utility ran for 1hr of inactivity and it won't restart."
"We'd better have a look at it. Here's your RMA number..."
If it were me, I would make Asus know that it was THEIR product that screwed up. Bottom line, it's a service issue. If it has to be replaced, then that's their problem, not mine. I followed the instructions and either the computer, the flash utility or the BIOS failed me.
That's my opinion anyway. I'm just suggesting he try the power down to see if he can avoid the inconvenience of sending his new notebook back for repair/replacement. They're definitely not going to replace it without looking at it first.

Hello everyone!
I just purchased the Asus G51JX-X5 laptop from Costco a week ago. I just wanted to post my experience up in case it is of any use. I also want to contribute to this thread since it's been helpful to me.
Pros:
- I got my laptop 2 days after ordering from Costco even though they said 7-10 business days.
- Laptop looks very cool. I was skeptical about the design on the laptop but like it after seeing it.
- Love the keyboard and touchpad feel compared to many other laptops.
- The laptop came with 1333Mhz instead of the specified 1066Mhz memory. Brand is Kingston.
- My initial attempt at clean install of Win7 resulted in some drivers, obtained from Asus site, not installing. Others have reported similar driver install problems such as with the camera. I ended up installing Win7 Ultimate x64, then using the driver installer on the disk that came with the laptop. Everything installed fine. I left out some components I didn't want of course. Now everything is working.
- I replaced the WiFi card with Intel Centrino Ultimate N 6300. Thanks to rex for detailing his experience which was helpful.
- BIOS update to 208. I upgraded before I found this thread. It seems to be running fine and BT seems okay. I updated through Windows BIOS update program (I'm going to update through the BIOS program from now on if I ever need to update again). I was going to downgrade to 206 but I haven't experience any problems so I am keeping it as is.
- Running Nvidia 258.96 drivers. Haven't noticed any issues. Able to play StarCraft 2 on high settings.
- Able to run XP VM.
- It feels like I'm using a desktop.
Cons:
- HOT!!! This was a major concern until I read that it's normal for i7 laptop with such a graphics card. I've been monitoring my CPU and GPU temperatures. CPU: Idle @ 55C, Load @ 65C. GPU: Idle: 60C, Load @ 80C. I am using Logitech LapDesk N700. I haven't tested thoroughly how helpful it is but I'm not taking any chances. I think it might have improved by a few degrees cooler. Also, the speakers on the lapdesk is a lot better than the laptop speakers. The power brick also gets very hot when laptop is under load. I hope the laptop lasts a long time despite the heat. Even at idle, I can feel warm/hot air blowing out the left side. At load it gets really hot and left corner of wrist rest area is really warm.
- Laptop is heavy. Add the weight of the lapdesk and it's even heavier. I don't travel much or use it in settings such as coffee shops so it's not a big deal.
- No room for second hard drive because of memory extender. I was hoping to use existing drive as secondary when I get an SSD for main drive. I'll just use USB drive instead.
- Camera has high quality picture but seems laggy/slow. Maybe I just haven't found the right settings.
- The picture quality of the screen looks nice but the viewing angle is bad. Depending on the tilt, top appears darker and bottom appears brighter and more washed out. Is this normal? Do I need to exchange for another laptop? I think it's normal because a few other laptop I've seen has same problem but I want to make sure.
- I hate the driver inconsistency/quality and lack of documentation (no readme's) from Asus website. Installing from the driver CD saved me tons of time.
- There is noticeable stuttering when I played a video from youtube and copy a large file from USB drive to local hard disk at the same time. Anyone experience the same problem or know how to resolve it?
Overall, I love the laptop and I would recommend it. -
hey guys i have a keyboard lag issue on my asus g51jx-x3. i was told by other threads to uninstall the Synaptics driver from the laptop and it did work. i have no keyboard lag at all. they also recommended me to disable the touchpad in bios, but when i went into bios, i don't see an option to disable the touchpad. i'm on bios 207. can anyone help me with this because it's annoying when i type and have my palm accidentally brush on the touchpad. i know with the synaptics driver, they have the palm rest and typing feature where it will prevent unnecessary movements on the touchpad when my palm brushes on it, but i cant have the synaptics program installed or else it will cause keyboard lag. thanks

wound removing the cmos or something like that reset the BIOS to its original state? o and btw where is the cmos in this laptop

Good Evening to all, sorry I've been working for 2 days straight and couldn't get out of my "driver's seat" at work (an SGI work station...funz!) to bother with normal life...I see there are some "emergencies" going on here, like WOW!
I will try to help, but a bad BIOS update is usually a candidate for Asus Service/Tech Support, and that's usually the ONLY way to get things back to "normal", which can often mean A NEW LAPTOP!
Here we go...and if this FAILS the only resort is to call Asus Tech Support (1-888-678-3688 in the USA) and tell them "I am screwed, the machine is screwed, the BIOS update FAILED, please fix it for me or replace the Damn machine, Thank You Very Much!" (paraphrasing robbied's post, which is also accurate!)
1) Power down the laptop, remove the power cable/cord/AC adapter and do NOT attach it during this sequence until I tell you to
2) REMOVE the BATTERY and put it on the shelf for about 25 minutes or so, safe keeping
3) Hold down the Power button for 1 solid minute after the above is accomplished, and release, then wait 10 minutes before you hook up anything or replace the battery, which is preferred that you leave out for the 1st suggestion I have for you, the first of a large sequence, depending on each one before it to work correctly, so do these things IN ORDER without fail! Again, good luck, and I hope this works for you...otherwise it's Tech Support City, end of discussion.
4) a) Leave the BATTERY OUT of the machine, hook up the AC Adapter/power brick, and power on the machine by holding down the Power button HARD until you see the Asus splash screen...do NOT let up, this may take as long as 1-2 minutes to jump-start such a messy BIOS problem, but HOLD IT DOWN until the splash screen comes up!
b) after you see the Asus splash screen and hear the chime it makes, start tapping the F2 key in 1/2-second intervals, not too fast, not too slow, just steady tapping, this will get you into BIOS
c) if you are successful and get into BIOS, I want you to Flash the BIOS AGAIN, if you used the BIOS update utility and have the file accessible, either on USB Flash Drive, the Desktop, etc...and this time DO NOT DO ANYTHING after the BIOS Flash is complete!!!!!!!!
(If you have a BAD BIOS FILE forget the following steps and immediately use your browser, download a fresh BIOS v206 file and USE THAT to flash your BIOS, starting over at the top of the sequence here all over again)
d) after the BIOS flash is complete, let the laptop power down without you intervening at all... DO NOT RESTART THE MACHINE IMMEDIATELY!
e) wait about 5 minutes, or longer, longer is better, then restart the machine normally, but DO NOT hook up the battery yet...
f) after you see the Asus splash screen start tapping the F2 key again, just like before, and go into BIOS once again...
g) once into BIOS, go to the last screen on the RIGHT, the LOAD screen, and choose "LOAD DEFAULTS", whatever terminology they use I forget, but LOAD DEFAULTS is the choice there, hit RETURN/ENTER to choose it, then hit F10/ENTER to save the selection and EXIT BIOS, allowing the laptop to start normally without you intervening AT ALL!
h) you should be Golden after all that work (and congratulations are in order if you pull this off) in BIOS, ie the machine should return to normal, but please check your BlueTooth and see if it's working (hopefully it is)
I) your REGISTRY is going to be a mess after all that, so go to Glary Registry Cleaner download page and get the Cleaner, and use it WITHOUT FAIL on the Registry (Google Glary Registry Cleaner and you'll find it easily) to fix all the fragments and errors such a session will generate...if you fail to do this step you are risking LOSING THE OPERATING SYSTEM! Please complete this 100% & again...good luck!
DO NOT mix and match Mhz...get 1333Mz 4GB SODIMM RAM modules!
Insert the 4GB SODIMMs in slots 1 and 3, so that you have Dual Channel Memory Effect, that would be the "Top Module" in each bank of modules...if necessary, go to Asus Tech Support web pages to identify the RAM modules so you get Dual Channel Effect with 12GB RAM placed appropriately.
Disable it with Fn/F9 selection on the KEYBOARD! To get it back REPEAT the motion, Fn/F9!! That is your key for the touchpad, and it will eliminate it 100%. :GEEK:
OK, enough of the emergencies and Tech Support questions for the night, I am ready to explode from no work/fun/enjoyment on my laptop for 2 days!
You really miss the G51 when you've been tied down to a big old work station doing crazy amounts of HD video and audio work (Sony Vegas and Pinnacle Studio apps), plus the compositing is just life draining, trust me you wouldn't want to do it often...neither do I! :rolleyes2:
There is one thing about my SGI work station though (twin XEON 3Ghz CPU's and 48GB DDR3 RAM (!), in gangs of 4GB modules), and that is this:
"There is no substitute for massive amounts of RAM!"--anonymous, 2010
What else of interest...did everybody get their HDMI issues ironed out yet? Or is it still a big "No Can Do" deal going on for Hino, Jack, and the others?
I find that all so hard to deal with because mine just works fine! And that is not kidding at all, now with the new features to "Drag and Drop" your selection in the nVidia CP for monitor arrangement, it's twice as nice and easy, with the new CP option! That is CP in video driver/audio driver 290.xx BETA which I have been using since the weekend, and IT WORKS GREAT!
As for the new people, where did you all come from? I wish that it were mandatory that we have to post where we are from when we enter these Forums, as that is of great interest to some of us...!
Are you all from the USA... or where? Please tell us when you post here, and welcome to all of you who are new, this is THE PLACE for all the up to date TechNo-Jingle on the G51 series laptop, you got that right. If I don't tell you what is up, then the others here will-- so keep in touch and we'll be here for all the problem solving and fun you can have with these great laptops, which is a LOT!
Did you know that our laptops will be Classics forever! I pronounced them "Classico" long, long ago and still do, yessir I do! (Elvis says so too!)
Enough for tonight, as I am a literal basket case, from work only, and I hope to be back to normal by tomorrow so it's Good Night Irene, right now...
If anybody ever needs an answer REAL QUICK I encourage use of our PM System here, and I'll get paged immediately on my iPhone 4, so if it's an emergency or very important don't hesitate to email/PM me! I don't mind, I like it, so go for it!
Have a good evening, later gents and ladies (if any)... -
Hey guys, have you tried playing around with Creative Audio Center? What are your preferred settings for bass boost, eax effects and CMSS-3D?
-
About the Creative Control Panel...
The speakers don't work worth bothering with, so I have mine set for my headphones, which are UE Triple-Fi 10's (Ultimate Ears top-line IEM's), and I do not use the EAX 3D with anything as it distorts the sound too much,
but here's what my other settings are:
CMSS 3D is set for a 44% gain and it's enabled
In Speaker Settings I have Enabled Bass Boost to 7dB, and 70Hz for my best frequency response in the headphones, ie gives a nice 'thump' to a bass line, but not overwhelming by any means, and I check "Optimize speaker output for heaphones" also to enable that setting
The graphic equalizer is the key thing to enable correctly, and I have it set for gain on the low end, mid range defeated mostly, and plenty of gain on the highs also...I call the settings "Rock My Way" fyi, and I can take a snapshot of the CP if you want, it's very effective settings for IEM's and good headphones...speakers too!
That's about it for an audiophile experience with headphones on this unit, as you know the speakers are not worth mentioning...but you have external speakers, yes? Using them of course?
Hope that helps you out some, it's not much really but it makes my headphones sound pretty nice on this unit, turned up to about 86% or so...
Later... -
Yar, the HDMI issue is still floating around me, and I doubt downloading the Beta Driver/Control isn't going to work because my Computer doesn't even hook up through HDMI, but here's the wierd thing, I borrowed an HDMI capable XBox 360 from my dads, (Mines like first generation Xbox 360, has no HDMI port), and tested the HDMI and it worked!! it's almost as if the Samsung, hates my computer and laptop
-
Here's the graphic equalizer settings...
works for me...Attached Files:

Creative Audio Center? does that mean you guys are using the Creative Audigy Driver?

Mine plays just fine, and has with every laptop that I've ever used as a player or viewer on it, don't ask me why but the Sony, my Asus UL30VT-X1, and this newer Asus G51 all have worked without fail on that HDTV, a 2009 Samsung LCD TOC 46" 680E 120Hz/50K contrast system that has the best color picture of any HDTV I've ever seen.
Now why it works and why yours doesn't is the mystery of course, but I am not there with your HDTV to figure out the setting that works, but THERE IS ONE someway, somehow, it's just a HDTV you know, not a brain trust from Mars! Hah!
With the right settings, whatever they are I don't know, but with the right ones that system of your will show a DVD or BluRay movie, given the chance, someway, somehow, just like Hino's will and everyone else who has "The Samsung Blues"...man, if I could can it and sell it I guess I'd be a zillionaire huh? But that's what I think about it, and if I'm wrong then I'm wrong, but I feel as above 100%, ie it's just an HDTV and can be manipulated to work somehow with the controller and settings.
I am not saying I know everything about these things, but simply that there is some setting in your system that will allow playback through HDMI, it just hasn't been discovered yet. When you DO discover it the setting will be some simple little thing that was overlooked somehow, something basic, and it will seem like such a small thing when you discover what it is.
But it's preventing your system from recognizing the HDMI signal, that is what is happening, and that's a shame... -
Ya, I thought the same thing, like maybe there were some settings on the TV, but all the HDMI features controls are locked out,
Off to school now
"Peace" -
@rexrzer727, I wasn't here the past few weeks because of examinations (still on-going) and I'm just one month away from one of the most important examinations of my life: the Cambridge GCSE "O-Levels", which is a specially difficult version of the original GCE O-Levels! Taking 8 subjects: Combined Humanities (Geography Elective and Social Studies), English, Higher Chinese, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Elementary Mathematics, Additional Mathematics!
Another reason was that I was just jealous that your G51Jx got all the nicey upgrades that I can't afford as a 16 year old. Have you tried installing like 14GB of RAM? Maybe it's better than 12GB!
Thanks for the Creative settings too, although I've just realised it isn't going to be sensible to leave it on all the time, especially the EAX effects when watching YouTube videos!
Just to share with you guys, I've had much trouble connecting my laptop to my home's Phillips PFL7403 42" HDTV (120Hz, 10-bit colour and I think 16.7 million colours). There was this stupid problem of overscanning until I figured out in the TV menu that I could change the mode from TV to PC, which the TV will then display the native 1920x1080 resolution without underscanning or overscanning. The picture modes (Vibrant, Standard, Movie...) of the TV will also be disabled and the original picture settings of the PC screen will be cloned to the TV! @Jack2727, maybe you can try calling up Samsung and asking!
Just another question: Have anyone of you guys installed Snow Leopard yet? It's just amazing, although I haven't really found a use for it yet other than to show off to people that I have the fastest "MacBookPro 2,1" in the entire world according to Geekbench!
That's about it, folks! Must get back to studying Chemistry for tomorrow's test! -
See, this is the only other documentation of a slow/laggy camera that has shown up that I can tell. Ive had this same similar problem and has called Asus on the matter. All the guy said was that Its a 2mp camera and that because its a poor quality camera that its going to lag badly. If were going to spend a butt load of money, why put a pos camera in it. Heck the iPhone 4 has a 5mp camera. Now I doubt that its the megapixel that is resulting in the lag but tech support did little to help me out rather than tell me its the camera's fault. Has anyone else had a similar problem of laggy camera?
I actually think the weight is fine considering how powerful it is. I was originally looking at the TOSHIBA Qosmio and I decided against it as its a 10lb laptop . I carry the G51jx to school everyday in the nifty backpack they gave me and its no more than just a large digital textbook. -

Mr. nfshp253;
Good to hear from you again, and thanks for the personal note about
your activities as a scholar-piano player, of which I was the same when
your age, so I know exactly the feelings and anxieties that you are
going through when the exams take over one's life completely...it is a
grim reminder that in order to *get somewhere* in this world you have
to spend some time working hard, doing things that you maybe, just
maybe would rather *not* be doing. OTOH think about how accomplished
you will feel after the Caimbridge exams are over and you are in like Flynn
as far as qualifying for the next level of study goes!
I was enrolled in the Trinity College of Music (Caimbridge University school)
program from age 5 through 17, a most rigorous and special music and
music theory/writing/comprehension program centered on the piano, and I
actually received my "licensia teacher" award at age 16-where I was certified
by Caimbridge in piano technique and music theory and could get paid for
teaching accordingly. Going through that program was a wonderful thing to do
when I was young... although I didn't pursue music as a vocation it was still a
fantastic training of one's mind and hands to perform, play, conduct, and write and enjoy music of the Classical variety in the fullest extent, and I never have forgotten most of the important aspects of music appreciation, performing, theory, and composition to this day.
I dropped classical music for jazz and contemporary piano after I was 18 years old and went away to school for Journalism and communication studies, and those years and years of Caimbridge training was a nice basis to use for writing jazz especially. I wrote quite a few nice selections that I can still play, given the opportunity and a couple minutes to "warm up" and get familiar with a piano. We don't even have a piano in the house now, sad to say, but that doesn't prevent me from playing because my neighbor has a nice Steinway Baby Grand in her house and she lets me play it on occasion.
What is your specific focus on the piano now? Are you studying the Masters
still, or have you gone beyond that and are doing writing, theory, and conducting? Have you performed publicly for the Caimbridge program like I had
to do? Are you in fact taking the classes like I did or has it changed since the
years have passed?
As far as my G51 goes, you know that I would love for you to have a similar machine, and it pains me that you cannot do such a thing right now...but your time will come I assure you! Just having a G51 like you have, with ALL the toys such as the Chinese/Asian market version seems to come standard with is pretty special anyway, at least I think so... The USA version is a bone stark, plain version of the laptop, and we have to spend a LOT of $$ to get things right with the options and accessories, so you should be feeling *good* about having one like you've got!
It's not that I really wanted to make my G51JX-A1 the best of its kind, but given the chance I had the opportunity to purchase the right accessories for it, and I did just that, and what a nice change of face the thing is now! I wouldn't change anything about it now, it is purrrfect as a laptop goes, and all my friends and family are just as jealous and envious as you must be about it, I assure you!
The 14GB RAM quotient never entered my mind, strange enough, because it's an "odd" integer of 6 and the throughput would be inconsistent compared to 12GB RAM, or so I think. I pretty much proved that 12GB is the sweet spot for this laptop, vs 8 or 16GB in any case, and I think the same would be true about 14GB. Good question though, and I appreciate it...nobody else asked about it, so you're keeping sharp there, my man!
Good luck on your exams, as you will do fine I am sure so that's just a friendly thing to give you, ie the more support the better. As for those settings for the Creative CP, yes, it's not for casual listening @ UTube et al! Those settings are for music listening, and music listening alone, or when you are using the headphones for virtually anything with entertainment in the mix, ie a movie or BluRay disc, any sort of HuLu deal on HDTV, etc etc. Purely for that sort of thing not casual listening or normal use of the laptop.
I did experiment with the Creative CP quite a bit when I first got the laptop and connected my IEM headphones, as they give a very "pure" sound and tonal experience...you should get a pair and be a closet audiophile like I am! With my acute tonal hearing and appreciation of things "in key, on time, and working great" in music or any entertainment venue really, I searched and searched for the best headphones out there and bought and sold many a pair before discovering the Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10 headphones--they pretty much blew my mind out!
They've got a bass response that is just unbelievable for headphones of any type, even big normal headphones cannot compete with the UE Triple-Fi 10's, they are so strong in that regard. That isn't to say the mids and highs aren't right either because THEY ARE, it's simply that the bass response is something that you are NOT prepared for when you 1st get a pair of them and insert them into your ear canal, and get ready for a listening session....I assure you that any listening session is sublime and perfectly rendered by the Triple-Fi 10's, they are the best, and worth every penny of their $300 asking price (you can, on sale, get them here at Amazon.com for as little as $100 or so, typically $170-$199 is a normal retail discount price on them at Amazon.com Marketplace).
That's just in case you want the finest experience of your life with respect to headphones and that sort of appliance for listening...Triple-Fi 10's by Ultimate Ears are the A-Ticket, bar none. If your budget doesn't call for that kind of thing right now, make it a part of Xmas, maybe!? Ask for them as a present, I guess? I only mention it because of your musical background, and like mine, it makes a big difference in *how* we listen and appreciate music, I am certain of that...I look at a musical experience with all sorts of depth of field and different kinds of values than most people do, I long ago learned that precept...and if you have the same thing going for you, try out that set of headphones and see what you think!
Have a good weekend, and again, good luck on the exams, not that you'll need it, but good luck anyway! -
anybody, know a good screen cleaner? I got lot of marks on mine (For w/e reason i dont even touch) and when I tried cleaning wit a lightly moist towel, it left streaks -_- (Dam you streaks)

lawl, well i've just pretty much lost something like $40, like maybe 2 months bk I bought a Belkin Cooling Pad, today I noticed it wasn't running, I checked the fan, one of the blades had broke and was jammed, so i took it out, plugged it bk in, nxt thing I know theres two more broken, pulled them out, and now it makes a constant noise____ Which means its not worth using anymore O_O this wouldn't annoy me as much if I had a job, but Im jobless right now, and no money -_-
Ah ya does anyone have problems with the Power Options not changing completely sometimes, i have it on high performance and yet the display shuts off at the same time as the Power Saving Option
Edit: Was right checked my operations, looks like it was stuck between High Perf and Battery Saving
Edit: Just out of curiousity, in your guys opinion, should I invest in another cooling pad, or is the fan on the laptop fine(When under load) without the cool pad, my gpu gets as hot as 88degrees C, with it, it was 84degrees C (91 degrees C in Napoleon Total War) -
Okay, update on the Linux situation.
After some finagling, I was able to set up both Ubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 13 in separate virtual machines with little issue. Fedora's window manager stability is somewhat questionable under VirtualBox, but at least Ubuntu runs just fine.
Turns out one of my tests was invalid, as I had a bad 10.04 .iso from the get-go. I re-downloaded it and am now burning it again at the lowest speed for one final attempt; let's see how it goes.
(in before the install actually works but keyboard becomes unresponsive and prevents me from being able to boot into Windows again without messing with menu.lst xD)
EDIT-UPDATE: ...And guess what? That's exactly what happened. I managed to install Ubuntu 10.04 without a hitch this time, but my keyboard freezes up and the arrow keys do nothing on the GRUB bootloader screen. Which essentially means I'm pretty much locked out of Windows now -____-
Has anyone else had this problem? Where the arrow keys work just fine in the BIOS and stuff, but don't respond after that until an operating system is booted? It was annoying enough having to wait out the 30 seconds before 'Start Windows Normally' after a crash, but not being able to go back to Windows entirely is a rather serious issue for me. Any help on the matter will be greatly appreciated. -
Here's the website, and from there you can take it to find a local reseller, or amazon.com should carry it (never searched there but they should have it, they have everything else...!), etc. Apple recommends it, so does HP and Sony fyi, and that hasn't changed for a long, long time. Klear Screen will fix you up!
Klear Screen - LCD & Plasma Screen Cleaner -
Hey Rex, is that only sold in the USA, or do you think I could buy it in Canada, at say Bestbuy, futureshop,Stables...
Nvm it appears I have to order it online, all the places in Canada that sell them are like 2 hour drive, and thats not worth it for a clean spray.... -
Jack, go to the web site and use the links there to find a local reseller...it is sold WORLDWIDE! Even my best internet Pal in Australia found it Down Under when I suggested that he start using it on his MacBook Pro, easily, so you should be able to find it there in Canada no sweat...I don't know where, but somewhere via the Klear Screen web site you'll find it.
-
Trust me on this, you need it for that nice, new laptop you've got because you are going to thrash it at school and home, and you'll need it to clean ALL the surfaces not just the screen! I clean my whole laptop with Klear Screen, always have, always will...it's non-toxic and non-abrasive and has no hi-powered chemicals like acetone-based things, or ammonia-based substances in it. It is totally SAFE AS MILK for your laptop, and you DO NEED IT!
Get a big bottle, and it will last you forever...I have a big bottle that I've been using since 2004 believe it or not! That is going on 6 years of use for one large $75 bottle that I got when I worked for Apple computer, and it's still stable, cleans perfect on anything I use it on, it's the No.1 thing I use for cleaning all my computer surfaces, keyboards, etc...
There are two ways to look at something like this: get a 1/2-arse compound and it will do a 1/2-arsre job on your precious new G51 laptop; or get a great product that will do a 100% GOOD to GO Job on the laptop and your HDTV, any monitor you own, any LCD surface or keyboard etc, facing surfaces of a laptop, the lid, all of it! I use it for zillions of things not just an LCD cleaner!
You need to trust in my judgement about this product, because once you use it you will never have to use anything else...it's just that good! For Apple, Sony, and HP all 3 of them to recommend this product is not some small-time thing, it is universally accepted as being the ONLY PRODUCT that is fail-safe on LCD surfaces, will not harm them, will not streak, will not take the surface coating off lenses like in my Pentax and Hasselblad cameras, so there's another use right there...CAMERA LENSES!
Good Grief, do something nice for that laptop and the other things you own with LCD and computer surfaces, all of them...this is the product to get, and if you don't have it you don't have what you need...
I recommend this stuff 100,000%! It is the gospel! It works! Get some!
