There ain't a laptop that I know of that could do what you are asking, I mean
come on now, 60FPS @ full HD resolution without AA? Get serious!! Tell me any laptop that does such a thing and I'll trade this POS in on it immediately!
Realistically you are asking for the impossible, and then some. Laptops, even the best of them such as the G73JH series with the ATI 5870 1GB DDR5 full 2.7million transistors video getup (ours has 1.4million transistors for comparison), and full 16-lane bandwidth, with 136 Shader pipelines (ours has 96 fyi), even that laptop won't do 60FPS @ full HD resolution. Hell's Bells, even one of my desktops with twin EVGA GTX-285's 1GB DDR3 VRAM in SLI will only pull down about 50-75FPS in the best of all worlds setup in the games you mention @ full HD rez...so I don't know where you are getting such an idea in the 1st place.
This laptop will be maxxing out at 20-40FPS at Full HD rez, and that is reality-- and that's mighty good for what it is, with a choked GTS-360M (down to those 96 Shader pipes instead of the 116 of the GTS-260M or the 136 pipes of the ATI 5870, the most powerful notebook video card there is, bar none),
and a fantastic LCD screen that really doesn't have a bad viewing angle. For a laptop this is one fantastic display, I mean it's as good as the G73's in my view it is anyway, and it should be since it's the same screen! Hah!b
OK, next theoretical question! These are great laptops, but don't expect a miracle out of the GTS-360M with just 96 Shader pipes, that's the limiting factor with the laptops, and still these are very capable considering all factors and the fact that they ARE portables, not a desktop.
I am not trying to give you a hard time by answering this question like I did, but seriously, where did you get such an idea?
For $1350 this is the best laptop in the world at that price point, no doubt about it in my mind and I have a pretty fair frame of reference, with lots of computer background in it, so be happy with 20-40FPS with our getup and go, and you'll be a happy owner, otherwise stick to desktops for that type of speed because that is where you will find it, and ONLY there...

Can you believe that a simple BIOS update fried our BT modules? That is just nutz is it not? I know that mine got updated with the latest Intel GM55-series motherboard and BT module from BroadComm because I saw those parts with my own eyes, and they be the coolest, latest production numbers you can find anywhere.
I am glad that your repair got done correctly that 1st critical time, and that the nice people in the Indiana facility are doing better work than before, or so that I heard anyhow--not that it matters.
Was the notebook all spiffed up when you opened up the box, like no fingerprints and shiny and clean as a top? Mine sure was, it was like they didn't even touch the thing it was so dang clean, and that tells me that they actually were wearing GLOVES when they put them back in the case, and packed the laptops up for shipment, a neat trick if you can do it!
What BIOS does yours have now, is it v. 207? Id guess it has it since that is what is current with that BIOS update...
Let us know if things continue to work well for you, and don't be a stranger now that you've posted here a couple times ok? -
Is that what you are asking about? If you aren't getting sound out of the HDMI cable that should be a problem...not normal, should have sound AND video out of that cable via the nVidia HD Audio chip...
Please clarify, thank you very much! -
Now you are making it seem like it is difficult when it isn't...I mean can't you organize a DVD ROM, or USB Flash Drive, or even an SDHC card with all the appropriate drivers and the nVidia setups on it? That is just base computing, I'm not asking for something really difficult, it's normal to do this sort of thing if you want control over your machine(s)! I CI every laptop I've ever owned, including my Mac Book Pro's! My wife's MBPro is just 10 months old, and I've Clean Installed it twice to get rid of problems, and they did vanish too!
As for sourcing the OS, all you have to do is to go back a couple pages in this Forum thread and one of the guys here sourced all the different OS's from Windows at Digital River.com, and that's where you get them, it's a piece of cake!
Once you have the drive DVD ROM/USB Flash Drive etc organized, the rest is Simple Simon Simple, just follow the guide and you'll be done before you know it. EASY to do, honestly, even for the 1st time you won't believe how easy it is when you are all finished, and then you'll have a Virgin Machine, one that will work 100% of the time, all the time, correctly, no BS software getting in the way of the machine's great hardware anymore.
Once you've got the software fixed, you'll know real, real quick about the machine's abilities and capabilities, and as far as your BSOD's are going, maybe it's a result of what you are doing with the laptop? User Error is a terrible thing to come to terms with, but maybe you are doing something to cause those BSOD's? It's possible, trust me it is...otherwise...
Tell me all about how you are getting BSOD's and I'll tell you if it's User Error, or something in-between even...there must be a pattern to them if you are getting them, so when, how, why do you think that they are happening?
Please describe and the rest of us can take it from there, your description is everything by the way, so don't mince words and don't be afraid to give a thorough and complete account of the situations as they happen...ok? Thanks! We'll help you if you can help us help you first... -
The main problems come from cables that are not laptop-friendly, and that can be even an expensive Monster Cable setup. I found the easiest and best connections come from cables that are sub-10feet in length, the best length is the shortest length that your environment can stand...ie I have connected best and easiest with a 10-foot double gold-plated cable, to ANSI Standard "3" if you want the rating for the cables themselves, which gives the number of and types of wires within the cable itself, just a good quality cable, nothing spectacular, ie you don't have to purchase a $100 cable to get connected, just a good quality cable, that is all! And less than 10-feet long, preferably 6-foot is ideal, nothing longer than 10 feet though maxximum!
Are you toggling the HDMI cable/TV connection with the Fn/F8 key stroke, by the way? That will switch off the desktop and give control to the TV, where your entire desktop will show up on the TV and you control everything from there NOT the laptop, that's the easiest way to control an HDTV broadcast in my view...and the laptop's controls, too. Easily seen on the HDTV...
I've been showing HuLu content on my HDTV, which is a Samsung 40" LCD HDTV of the 720P variety not 1080P...my studio's HDTV...in the front room of the house I have a Samsung HDTV which does 1080P, and that is cake-like to deal with compared to my studio's HDTV, the 720P variety HDTV...anyway, I like the HuLu shows like Dresden Files, it's the teats on toast stuff! And I have been showing myself HuLu shows from the laptop recently in upscale 720P-adjusted content and it's been working great once I have the HDTV's size dialed into the laptop, and you do that in the nVidia Control Panel...once you get the HDTV online adjust the content ratios there at the nVidia CP and all will be well.
For an HDTV with 1080P rez it's a bit easier, as that is native to the laptop also, so it's pretty much plug and play-- for me anyway it is...no difficulty at all. I always toggle OFF the desktop with Fn/F8 and get all my controls on the HDTV, it's just easier that way with my BT mouse doing the controlling...!
The HDMI cable carries both signals, that is video and sound both, so I don't quite know what is going on with your problems therein...and the HDTV controls are critical of course, ie the Menu Commands that you have to give the HDTV to get the laptop recognized, and that is part and parcel of knowing your HDTV's menu commands well...do you understand your HDTV's menus?
If you are using, for example, HDMI slot 4 you must tune the HDTV to HDMI slot #4 and then plug in the laptop's cable into the same slot, and it should be P&P from there, (plug and play), once they are synced like that.
What do you think is preventing the HDTV from seeing the laptop? Is it the cable? How long is the cable, pray tell? If it's longer than 10-feet it might not be optimum for this type of use, and gold-plated fittings are working the best also, and I mean this is normal jargon for these HDMI cables! I have purchased 3 of them at MeritLine.com for $4.99 at one point, all 10-feet long, all gold-plated HDMI male to male cables, and they ROCK! NO problems at all with that setup with any of my laptops, every one works 100% with those cables and the appropriate keystrokes on the laptop keyboard, of course...mandatory to get those right! So the best cables don't have to be expensive cables, just good ANSI Rating quality, and you should be good to go! -
Im pretty sure the maximum memory clock is 2000Mhz am I correct? -
Anyways, I really don't know what's going on with the sync to the TV, I always thought it's just plug and play. I got a 40" 720p Samsung in the living room, brought a Dynex 32" 720p for my parent bedroom, I got hdmi working on that Dynex set, but I didn't trust that brand too much, so I went to exchanged for a 24" 1080p Samsung. So now both Samsung doing the same thing, when I press the source button on the tv remote to hdmi 1, no detection found. I have no problem connection both TV with my PS3 tho, 1080p PS3 = SWEEET lol
I've tried the fn/f8, it just show that bubble LCD icon on my laptop, but yea like I said, laptop detects the TV, I can see the TV in the nvidia cp, I can even adjust the resolution and all those setting and such, but no HDMI 1 highlighted on the Tv source.
btw rex which video card driver are you using now? I'm using 258.96, just wondering if 258.96 is being naughty.
So to recap
HDMI cable works with PS3
HDMI cable works with laptop on a different TV
both Samsung TV not detecting the laptop
Thanks again Rex -
Ill post, what HDMI cable i have when I get out of class -
My apologies Hino, i just tried my HDMI hook up with my living room tv a 40" samsung... and it doesn't work, says The Source is not connected...
Odd, i looked up about this, and alot of ppl seem to have trouble with Samsung HDMI, major bummer
Edit: VGA Cable works though.... but when I plug HDMI into the samsung tv, it doesn't detect, I don't even think my laptop detects... but my other lcd works fine
Edit: Tried my computer hooked up through HDMI to the Samsung... still no luck...
Edit:Through multi troubleshoots and restarts i finally got the laptop to register Samsung, unfortunately the Samsung still does not detect the laptop
I believe Samsung makes bad HDMI -_-
Sry Hino cant help ya -
Yes VGA does work, but I rather have 1 hdmi than 1 vga and 1 audio plug to my laptop.
So right now I am hoping it's the drivers problem, gonna wait for Rex reply on the driver, cause I'm too lazy to rollback to 198 to test it out. XD -
Briefly before I get into tonight's performance, I am using driver 258.96 on the nVidia side, EVGA Precision cranked to 620/1625/2125 Mhz (1.9.6 version) 24/7, and all is well, not a problem of any sort in da house!
I must tell you I just had a Helluva Friday Night Theater Experience with my G51JX-A1 taking the place of my old Sony laptop, now departed and living in New York of all places via a sale to a dear friend...and this laptop ROCKS!
I had ZERO Problemas using this beauty of a computer as a BluRay player par excellance, and I mean it just did wonderful things: the picture was fantastic, the sound sublime, and all those fine old BluRay things happened just like they are supposed to do!
Honestly, I don't know where to start, I am still breathless from watching Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man in BluRay; preceding that I watched a fantasmagorical full-blown historical 'Surf-Fest' movie called "Step into Liquid" which was made by the son of Bruce Brown himself, the guy who made "The Endless Summer" back in the 1960's (my time in the H20, surfing all over the world I did!), and it was an amazing journey with the finest craziest surfing adventures known to man, including surfing off of the coast of San Diego about 125 miles out into the Pacific Ocean at a place called "The Wall" amongst other names...just unbelievable action with guys riding 120+foot high waves that break out in the middle of the ocean there only a couple times every year.
So what did I do to make all that magic happen? I dunno! I just plugged the dang HDMI cable into the Samsung TOC 46-inch LCD HDTV out in my front room, lit up my surround sound system for audio, turned on the TV, hitched the TV and the computer together by choosing "HDMI 2/DVI" for the source with the HDTV's controller, and Wham Bam, Thank You Mam!
I use a program called Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II for my player, and it worked purrrfect playing both of those high-defined BluRay movies 100% to the good, no glitches, no mistakes, no harm, no foul, just good old All-American Hollywood-style action for the past 4 hours or so, an amazing experience, with the G51JX-A1 doing its thing as the BluRay player.
WHAT is the difficulty you guys are having? Are you going into the nVidia Control Panel, Configure Multiple Displays area, and picking the correct function, whereby the HDTV "Samsung" in my case had a check mark through the "dot" to select it, and then you simply Right Click on the circle that represents the Samsung display in the CP, then choose "Clone the desktop to the Samsung TV" or some such thing, and BAM! You're stylin' like the mutherfletchers and the desktop is on BOTH HDTV and the laptop's LCD, and you simply then hit 'Play' on the controller for your BluRay player, and start watching the movie! That's about it, Folks!
That's all I had to do to watch those wonderful, fantastic two BluRay features tonight in my case, and I guess in your cases it would be regular DVD movies, but the effects are the same, the sequences are the same to pick the system and get it synced with the HDTV, I mean it's so simple!
I can't for the life of me figure out where you all are going wrong, Samsung HDTV's or not, because mine is a 2009 46" Samsung HDTV, the "Series 6/680" model which is called 'Touch of Color' with the dark red laminated border around the screen, very KUHL looking 46" LED LCD HDTV with the 120Hz switching, 50,000 Nits Contrast, and all the other fine things that these HDTV's are known for...4 HDMI outlets, true 1080P (1920 x 1080P resolution), I mean it's the top of the line deal from 2009 and we paid a pretty fortune for it as I recall, something like $2400 or so at Sears, which was an "internet matching price" with Frys.com's price at the time...a KUHL, KUHL HDTV, but a Samsung nonetheless and it worked purrrfect tonight!
I did nothing special, didn't even have to hit the Fn/F8 sequence, as I used the double-desktop technique to simply mirror the Asus desktop onto the Samsung HDTV, and the movie was playing on both screens at the same time of course, but only sound *HDMI BluRay-enhanced Dolby 5.1 Sound* in my case, out of the HDTV's surround sound system, with my Sony Optiarc 5730S doing its level best to source those nice BluRay movies for us, the wife and I tonight...piece of cake, walk in the park!
I just don't know how I could help anybody out with directions other than to describe just what I did as above, but nothing in terms of special keystrokes or things doing in the nVidia CP, I mean it was just quick, easy, and WHAM BAM! Thank you 'Mam! Worked a treat, really it did, just as good or better than my Sony's BluRay playing system, which is a bit more complicated with a Sony player called "WinInterVideo BluRay Player", which has to have the license renewed every couple of months, other things which are bothersome....but not this system here with my Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II 3D player doing its thing! This was cake-like, the Golden G51JX-A1 comes through again! Heeey Haaaaw!
You know I am coming to believe that this thing IS charmed, I mean nothing ever goes wrong with it, save for bad BIOS BS happening to it that killed the BlueTooth system, and had to go for service about that, but that is IT! Other than that glitch, this thing has been awesome for us, for me, for everybody who has seen it or been around it and used it...just a great laptop all-round!
That is the story from Southern California tonight, with my new OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD in da house now, and all is well with this little monster of a laptop! What a great laptop this thing is, I LOVE IT! -
Ok, it makes sense that the RealTek chip is switched off....so that explains why my speakers (plugged into the audio out jack of my laptop) don't give of any sound when HDMI is plugged in.
However, it doesn't explain why sound doesn't come out of my 40-something inch Sharp LCD.
P.S Turbo Boost option still doesn't appear in my P4G Hybrid. I uninstalled and re-installed the program and most of the related ASUS utilities already. Help! -
YEAAH My G51j is gone for the warranty. Hope they'll send me back a working one... And not exchange it for one is a gts360m. :O
After that i have to send my 1201n too... >< -
If you are getting video and no sound out of an HDMI cable, try another cable! The cable you are using is probably got a bad connector for sound, and it can happen a LOT that this is the case.
As for P4G not having Turbo/Extreme Turbo selections at the bottom, left part of the Control Panel, I have no idea why that would be happening if you have uninstalled the old CP, restarted the laptop, then reinstalled the new P4G CP, restart again, you should be good to go...if not, something is amiss with your installation of the OS, as Turbo/Extreme Turbo settings are part and parcel of P4G and our laptops with the Core i7 CPU's, plain and simple.
Did you do a Clean Install? Or are you monkeying around with the factory setup? If you still have the OEM setup and are "modifying it" I cannot help you there...that's just bad JuJu for these laptops, and things can go haywire doing that, uninstalling things etc...only with a Clean Install do we get to have the correct preferences and Registry settings from the get-go...if you are messing about with the OEM install of Windows with the Asus utilties and drivers you are pretty much wasting your time, if you ask my opinion about it, when it's soooo easy to Clean Install everything.
I mean I was gone and done with my Clean Install on Wednesday night in about 2.5 hours, everything of import including my work and pleasure/personal programs were done, installed, ready to go, and it all worked perfect from the get-go. With SSD's I have found that it's just as fast to do a Clean Install as a Cloning operation, and with the latter you are never sure until you try to boot the computer if it's right or not-- it can be a waste of time, too!
I dunno if I've answered your concerns, but maybe you missed something important in the OS if you did a Clean Install and are having this issue, who knows? If you didn't do a Clean Install there's the problem right there...you need to do it and get a fresh start, and things will be right as rain, I promise! -
Yeah. Now my GPU won't go to high speeds when I run Left 4 Dead 2, and by extension I'm guessing all games and GPU intensive programs.
This is annoying the heck out of me. I'll do a clean install now. -
Hello guys, I've recently been presented with the opportunity to buy this notebook new from a company that sells parts and assembles PC's. I mention this because I live in Panama (Central America) and Asus notebooks (especially gaming notebooks) are hard to come by here, and I have to pay a few extra costs to get it shipped internationally or by my preferred method (shipped to PO box in the US, then sent here).
I had previously considered the M15x (when I didn't know any better) and I also considered the G73JH a couple months ago and most recently the Sager NP5125/8690, mostly for gaming purposes (ie Crysis, Mass Effect 2, SC2, etc)
SO basically what I wanted to know from all of you experienced owners, is if there are any glaring issues that should be noted right out of the box (BIOS issues or bad hinge design, etc)?; I'm not the most tech savvy guy when it comes to computers and I've never overclocked anything in my life (this would be my first notebook btw, I'm not taking into account my 9" netbook).
Would the GTS 360 be able to play Crysis 2 at even medium settings when it comes out? Or does the GPU absolutely need to be Dx11 compatible? (I am indeed a noob, sorry if this is a dumb question).
So far this notebook looks great all around and I guess right now I'm just looking for something to keep me from getting it. Thanks -
Don't wory the gts 360m will be able to play all the dx11 games.
They will be dx10 compatible. -
Thanks! -
-
Hey rex can you post a picture of that control panel in nvidia, I believe I know which one your talking about and mine had Samsung and Mobile Desktop checked...
-
I have preached about using a Registry cleaner/fixer not only here, but in my other Windows groups without fail time and time again, and often I will get a person who has never done maintenance AT ALL on their PC's and has suffered naught up to then, and they will engage me in an argument about Registry cleaners/fixing, most often telling anyone who will listen/and me that it's totally unnecessary, a waste of time mostly.
I never argue much with people like that because they most likely never do oil changes in their cars on time either, you know? If people want to take a chance on their System crashing and burning because of never maintaining the Registry I guess it's their funeral, and I leave it at that.
I have no evidence to back up my claims about Registry fixes other than my own experience with Windows OS, and I've always practiced keeping the Registry in order and have never had a serious System crash to this date, and I'll continue to use Glary's utility, and Registry Mechanic by PC Tools until proven wrong, I guess! -
That is the way to use your notebook and an HDTV...the HDTV is a passive participant UNTIL you Right/Click and choose the 'Mirror' dialog, and hit 'Apply' in the bottom of the CP, and that forces the signal through the HDMI cable into the HDTV and after that everything is up to your choices on the desktop.
As long as you have BOTH HDTV and the 'Mobile Desktop' displayed in that CP your HDMI cable is good, and you are good to go! I think you and everybody else having trouble is not doing the Right/Click routine and choosing the appropriate dialog, THAT is critical and nothing will happen if you don't do it.
Let me know if this helps, because I think the "missing step" is what I've just detailed for everybody with this problem, and it really isn't a problem, it is just not knowing how to follow up through the nVidia CP with commands, that is all! -
I had a bit of an issue connecting the G51Jx to my HDTV, but figured it was something funky w/ Nvidia's control panel and managed to get it to mirror. I'm 100% sure it's due to the HDCP protection. By definition don't have more than 1 screen through HDCP so no other sources/screens to protect the content from.
As far as "no audio through HDMI", some older components can't receive audio through the HDMI. My receiver is one of those components! Once I got the video working, I had to RTFM for the receiver, and it stated specifically that a video source through HDMI would have to bring the audio through either optical or RCA jacks. No optical out on the G51Jx means no 5 channel audio for me (although I admit this is a shortcoming of the receiver, not the notebook).
ON THE 208 BIOS AND BLUETOOTH DISAPPEARING
Having flashed the 208 BIOS and discovering that my blootooth is gone in Windows, I found (serendipitously) that the bluetooth hardware IS STILL FINE. I'm dual-booting Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 on this fine notebook, and the bluetooth works like a damn CHARM in Ubuntu. I paired my iPhone with it easy as pie...
So that might give us an indication that BIOS doesn't KILL the bluetooth, but it may do something to it such that Windows can't find or start it.
BTW - Ubuntu is SWEET on this machine, and installed WAY easier than Windows does (well - that's probably because there's no bloatware in Ubuntu!)
Night all!
P.S. Oh - and Ubuntu only took one 4GB thumbdrive vs. Asus' 20GB install (4x5GB DVD roms). >< -
unfortunately I won't be able to test it out until I get back home... sunday night.. (visitng my dads, only tube tv)
Edit: just to ask... before you click Mirror Desktop, should your TV(when set on HDMI) Say something like source cable is not connected? -
Windows doesn't come out and tell you to do these things, and neither does the nVidia CP, which sort of sucks when you think about it...but just through experience I have learned that a Right/Click will normally do ALL KINDS OF THINGS in all kinds of situations! And so it is with this one...!!
Have a nice weekend, and when you return to your favored G51JX-A1 try out my suggestions, and see if that doesn't do the trick for you...and if you would be so kind as to comment in the Asus group you found where people are having this difficulty, and tell them that I said to do that technique, and it will solve their problems 100%, I'll just betcha! -
Hey guys, I was wondering how Asus informs you that your warranty is established. I submitted the warranty a couple weeks back after purchasing my laptop, and I haven't received any email or anything. Does it take long to confirm? Is it just assumed that it's all in order?
-
There is a procedure that you go through to establish the ADH warranty, and that is detailed in a thread in the Asus Discussions titled "Asus Loves Their Customers... et al", which will describe the process to get the ADH warranty activated online, and through email. You *can* do it through regular USPS Mail but there is no acknowledgment from Asus doing it that way, so I activated both warranties on my Asus notebooks the way that is described in the thread above for my own peace of mind.
You might go back to the Asus topics, find that thread, and follow the instructions to activate your ADH warranty online and through email, just for *your* peace of mind! If it's already activated through your previous actions they will tell you that, but either way it's best to have confirmation about it if you happen to have to use it at some point... -
still can't get it to work, ill show you some pics

Jack, Jack, Jack...I can lead you to water, but I can't drink for you for Christ's sake! You are THERE, Baby! Just choose "Duplicate the displays", either one of those choices! The HDTV will finally get a signal from the HDMI cable and you will have connection!
Don't you get it man, that is so simple to figure out!
EDIT: Forget the 'Apply' Command, there IS NONE in this window...just choose the 'Duplicate Displays' and THAT is the command, and connection will happen immediately! Either one of those that will work is fine, just choose one after Right/Clicking on the Samsung Display Icon (Display 2)...then you are DONE!
Right/Click on the Icon for the Samsung, which is the one on the right side of the CP, Display 2, right side! THEN make the choice..."Duplicate displays", either one that will work... and you are DONE, Baby!
Holy Moly, I honestly thought you could get this without all this instruction because this is just base, basic computing, ya know? Right/Click on that sucker, choose "Duplicate displays", either one should work, and BAM! You are in the money$$$ Baby!
I hope this gets you through the drill because there is nothing else to write about it...just do what I suggested YESTERDAY right now, and it will work fine! -
edit:
re HDMI: how coincidental. I've also had problems hooking up my G51J to a 32" samsung HDTV. The laptop could 'see' the TV but the TV never got any signal through HDMI, only ever through VGA. And I gave up after I *thought* I tried all the options (Duplicate, Extend, clone, LCD primary/HDTV primary etc) but will try again tonite.
Are you saying Extended desktop over HDMI is not possible? That would be just -
Now this depends on *which version* nVidia Control Panel you are using also, because the newest CP's have a bunch of new display features, yessir they do! I am presently using the latest Beta nVidia notebook CP which is now on the nVidia web site, and it's nVidia notebook CP v.260.63, which was just released 9/14/2010...
I gave it a couple days before I tried it, but this new CP has 'Drag and Drop' or simply "Drag the displays to match your configuration" feature now, so this will be a treat to use next time I use the Asus as my BluRay player! This CP does appear to have the Extended Desktop as a feature, also...ie you can "Mirror the displays" (Duplicate); "Change the main display" (Extended Desktop); or "Match the Desktop to the physical configuration of the Displays" (Extended Mirroring), your choice!
This is a new twist to the nVidia CP's, and it's ONLY available on the newest of the new Beta nVidia CP's which is available for download now at the nVidia.com web site. I just added the new CP and drivers last night, so I am not sure of the verdict on how effective the new CP is yet, but I am trying it out and will let everybody know as the days go on and I do more testing, when I have the time and inclination to do that sort of thing.
This is a FYI for everybody also, heads up so to speak, as the new CP promises to be the way of the future with the nVidia driver/CP's combination. There are other new features also, such as enabling 3D in certain types of HDMI BluRay feature playing; also there's new sound options, ie 24, 48 and 64-bit audio through the HDMI ports for certain new movies that are coming out plus the new BluRay 3-D movies are accounted for, at least this is the beginning of features to support the "new media" that is coming out now, so WoooHooo!
PhysX is also changed in the new driver/CP along with the Sound Driver (nVidia HDMI sound driver), there are a BUNCH of new features and I am just touching on them now. I'm pretty sure that this will be happening in a BIG WAY with the new driver packages that are coming out soon, ie in the future also of course as the new media evolves and HDMI/BluRay features get more complicated and intense with 3D and 3D-sound, to boot! Looks pretty KUHL to Rex, and I am looking forward to seeing these new features implemented...!
That is about it from my take on the newest Beta driver from nVidia, available NOW at the nVidia.com web site for Download, notebook featured drivers, BETA Drivers, Legacy Drivers, ie those pages there!
Have fun, everybody! -
LOL Rex... my god I am not a moron in computers (Which is probably going through yor head right now) I wouldn't be in a Computer Technician course if I didn't know the basics and advanced... but Im Telling ya man I did that, I TRYED ALL OF THE Options before posting and its just not recieving.... the TV continues to persist that no such "Setting" has been applied
Edit: and yet the laptop is telling me that my tv to laptop connection is fine.......................... -
Here is a screen shot of the configuration right now....
and it is still not workingAttached Files:

So you Right/Click on the Icon for the Samsung, choose "Duplicate display", either choice, and nothing happens? That is all-time weird, and I mean that 100% because you should be, by all intents and purposes, hooked up now!
Did you try a different HDMI cable? Done that, right...
I don't know where to go with this then, because with my setup it just simply worked fine, no issues at all, thus I am stumped at this point with your situation that is going on right now. Plus I am on my big PC server doing some HD work (video compositing) and will be stuck here for a couple hours, at least as fast as 24GB of G. Skill "Purple Wonders" 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and a Core i7 920 CPU @ 4315Mhz can crunch about 70-minutes worth of HD film!
So I don't have my machine to use as a reference right now, ie I am wingin' it, trying to imagine is going on with your setup, and I just cannot fathom it, why it's not hooking up presently, when it should!
If I think of anything else I'll post back here tonight later, but I just have no idea what to think is going on, other than a bad TV in the mix, that is the only thing left to ponder for me, anyway... -
I agree with you, the only good thing about this situation is that the laptop works fine with my other tv... not of Samsung brand.... (Don't know wat brand it is... i moved so its on its way here lawl...) but overall i'd say samsung has bad HDMI, you must've got lucky with your tv because I google this stuf and theres plenty of ppl with unsolved problems over Samsung and HDMI.... different laptops tooo.... anyway "Peace" for I am not going to trouble myself any longer with this, seeing how my 50" will be here soon, Praise moving vans xD

Haha you guys having fun trouble shooting that yet? haha yea like I said, I've tried EVERYTHING except a new driver, but Rex is using 259 too. downloading 260 beta right now, gonna play around with it tomorrow, let you guys know how it go.
update: no go :\ -
Far out, someone needs to lay off the red bull.
For the record I was using 258.96, it was a couple of weeks ago. The TV is a couple of years old. Will try this new 260 beta but still tending towards believing it's something wrong with the Samsung TV based on how many others google finds in the same boat. -
General questions:
Just found this laptop can handle 4 sticks of memory. I see it's listed as only being able to address 8gb of memory, but have seen references to 16gb.
Anyone know all the different variations of this laptop can take 16gb of RAM or is there a chipset issue?
Also wanted to know what folks think of the screen quality? How does it stand up to better quality screens like one on Envy and Alienware laptops?
Is the laptop reliable?
How's the heat?
Regards,
Mike -
Did anyone check this out and figure out if it works well with the G51jx? -

Any notebook that runs the Core i7 CPU's of any type runs a trifle "hot" vs normal notebooks, it goes without saying, but this one can handle it pretty well if you ask me, or any of the experienced owners here. Use a notebook cooling pad, if you would be so kind, and the issues are non-existent. I use a Logitech N100 notebook cooling pad, and it's a treat.
Reliable? Oh yes, they are that...and then some...I have had zero troubles but for a bad BIOS update that negated my Bluetooth module, and the notebook had to be serviced about that...but that is IT...this has been a very nice experience as far as owning notebooks and reliability goes.
Basically I encourage you to do some reading in this thread, as it's an eye opener as far as issues and fixing difficult things that we work with, and overall you will get an eagle's eye view of owners' viewpoints about a LOT of things with the notebook. I think we are all enthusiastic in terms of endorsements about the notebook, at least I sure am anyway, and to a person here, if you queried all of us, one by one, I think that we like the notebooks a LOT!
Asus notebooks are the best bang for the $$$ that I know of and I have had a ton of experience with notebooks, MacBook Pro's included in that statement, and these are the King of the Hill in that regard as far as PC notebooks goes. Look, any manufacturer that makes a group of notebooks with the Republic of Gamers logo on them has got to be "hip" a little, don't you think? I do, definitely think that Asus are an enthusiast's delight...!
Like I wrote, do some reading in this thread, as it's all about the notebooks and how we enjoy them 100%, the good and the bad, and there's a LOT more good than bad, trust me on that...but do the reading here and see for yourself what the owner's have to say about the notebooks...that is your best bet. -
I actually did read your 12 vs 16gb of RAM post. You do have some good info. in there and it's good to see someone who's actually tried and tested the +8 GB barrier.
I'm not calling your expertise in question, however, I was thinking there might have been reasons why your 16gb experiment might have failed, such as memory brand or other issues. I know some laptops are picky about those kinds of things.
In any event, the idea was to get the latest take on the laptop. One of may main things being screen/picture quality.

Be my guest, if you think that's a fair test of my efforts there, and I'll be happy to discuss the facts of the matter with you, perhaps in a PM is more appropriate?
Back to your other questions. The AU Optronics 15.6" 1920 x 1080 pixels HD LED LCD display is a little bit of a work of art, and I am looking right now at my wife's 13.3" MacBook Pro for comparison, albeit not an HD display, as I think that Apple does the best job of anybody on display quality. If I rate this laptop subjectively against a Mac's screen, it's about 75-80% of them to be candid about it. That's a fair appraisal I think...nobody is going to top an Apple notebook's display, but then again you have to go to the 17" MacBook Pro to get an HD screen to do an absolute comparison, and there the Mac wins hands down...that's a Helluva display in that laptop!
I think qualitatively and quantitatively Asus is a solid "2nd best" when you compare the two brands in terms of display quality. As far as PC notebook LCD's goes I would rate Asus at the top of the hill, no doubt about it, all brands of xlnt screen quality being considered in that statement. I happen to like the Sony LED LCD's a lot, especially in their better notebooks, but then again we have to draw the line somewhere and any Sony notebook that is equal or better than the Asus notebook LCD's is one of their best notebooks, say a VGN-FW-series (at the top of that series, where they have true 1920 x 1080P LCD's, not the cheapo 1600 x 900 "HD" LCD's that they are mass marketing these days paired together with a Core i7 CPU and an nVidia GTS-310M for example...a mediocre setup by any standard).
The other PC notebooks are not the equal of the G51JX-A1 display, as this display paired with the nVidia GTS-360M is a formidable package, with plenty of depth of field, good viewing angles, and the ability to use Asus Splendid Utility to fine tune the view to one's own taste, within reason this is a good pairing. Strictly speaking of notebooks in this price range with similar specs to the G51-series this is the top viewer, the best setup for the $$$ going right now. That is my view on the LCD, since you asked about it specifically, so give my vote to this laptop vs the others in the same range 100%, no doubt about it. These are not the equal of an Apple notebook display, but they are the best in their range as far as PC's go.
Anything else you'd like to query me about with this notebook I'd be happy to answer, and I didn't mean to give you a dime-store novel view last time, just simply reflected on my own "want for knowledge" about this series before I bought into one of the notebooks. I actually read all 360+ pages of the thread on the "old G51J" series before this notebook came to be a retail piece...now that was a daunting task! Hah-Hah! So glancing through this mere 70+ pages thread is a small thing to ask, you know? -
I used oneb1ts advice and played around with fans a little - so now they're stuck at full blast all the time. Even a hard reboot doesnt help, they will be off for some time, but then they'll spin to max speed and stay at that. It's nice to have the GPU temp at 55C idle, but the fan is just really loud. Not sure if this will work, but could one of you plus please send me an RW file with the default values for the Embedded Console?
Oneb1t, if you figured out what values would fix the fan to stay constantly on different speeds, that would be awesome. It would be the beloved fan control everybody wants, albeit manual. -

Yeah, but that gets overwritten by the acpi every few seconds. I was thinking of just having it overwritten by some program faster than the acpi can change it back, but I didnt find anything that could do it.

Update on Clean Install:
I finally got around to doing a clean install of Windows 7 Home x64 using a retail ISO (links posted earlier in this thread). The install went fine as far as product key was concerned (it accepted the key on the bottom of the notebook), however there are still a few concerns:
1. I can't get the camera driver to install - it simply fails. Yes, I checked the PID and matched it to the Chicony driver, although I can't be sure whether to install the 7129 or 7246 driver. The description doesn't give any clue as to why they're different. I've also tried to install the driver from the Asus in-box CD, but that one fails too.
2. More on the bluetooth issue after BIOS 208. I reported that Linux has no trouble running the bluetooth after the 208 BIOS install. It looked like that was the case with the clean Windows install as well... could add a device, but then the device driver installation for the paired device seemed to fail (iPhone 4). This definitely isn't a hardware problem (or BIOS for that matter) - it's something to do with the software. (Or the BIOS may have changed something that Windows software can't handle... but it's not hardware).
More as I get it. -
Edit: sry missed that about you not being able to use the cd driver, wha t is up with tht, plz double check your camera version...
Edit: I would be able to provide more info but I exchanged the laptop that had the Chicony cam, now i have the alternative camera..
