When playing Crisis on my 6831, I disabled the audio services. The game ran much better. So much so I wish we had a dedicated sound card as in a desktop.

I would be nice to have a hotkey for games, all unnecessary services off or on depending on needs.

Some guy or others, any measurable frame rate gains in your favorite apps/games with services turned down?

    cheers

I just booted up and this is the first real sentence typed on the bugga.
initialization and first boot took longer than I thought, as a first impression.

I didn't even bother booting up before changing to the hyper X 800 4G.
I'm going to need a steady hand I think to do further upgrades. .. I'll wait till later. :)

Yeah I just got my 1201N Silver a couple of weeks back and I am very impressed with it, definitely worth selling my 1005HA to get this unit.

I am going to blow away the install and put 64bit OS on it once the ram comes in. =)

Plays games better than I thought it would, but does not play Hulu clips as silky smooth as others have claimed. Although still better than my 1005HA did.

did you uninstall the current flash player and install the 10.1 beta on Adobe's site? make sure you use adobe's "uninstaller" program when removing the older Adobe flash and also that you using the latest Nvidia drivers.

i was having issues for awhile till i did this. now its silky smooth. :)

    Hi guys,

Really considering getting this laptop. Just one question - would this be able to play NBA 2K10 on medium settings? Thanks in advance.

Seriously thought I just herd hearing high pitched ringing from the Left side of the 1201n
... must uv been my nerves.
Haven't tried NBA 2K10 but I actually expected a little bit more from the cpu.
I suppose some optimizations are in order.... /
.. but, teh keyboard is nice. :p

    EDIT
ok, maybe this is a noob question. How do I update the bios with only a .rom file

The power adapter makes a slight, high-pitched noise for me.

OC the CPU slightly and you will see an improvement.

I just downloaded Asus Update, which is supposed to let you update the BIOS either through the web or with a ROM that you have locally. I have not tried it yet.

if you can link me to a demo or free trail ill run it for you.

    @ pingfreak

i used the update software with no issues. just FYI i downloaded the ROM file to my desktop and loaded it from there. i didn't try any of the other update methods.

i pray for you that your not hearing the same noise i was hearing. every once in a while when i would plug in my AC adapter the left side of the laptop would scream at me in a high pitched noise and then shortly after kill the AC adapter. some times the adapter would be ok after leaving it unplugged for about 10 min or so.... other times, not so lucky. the only fix was replacing the mobo. which unfortunately took 2 RMAs cuz Asus RMA dept sucks. :(

i grabbed this for my 1201n and couldn't be happier!

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834996514

i got mine at micro center.

here some pics. i modded the back fan grill by cutting out all the fins and replacing with a simple 80mm fa grill that i painted flat black. not that this thing is loud to begin with but the mod did reduce a few db.

i really love the fact i can put my extra HDD in this thing. its like a dock/HDD enclosure/cooling pad all in one!

How is it powered? It's it rechargeable, does it get it's power via USB from the netbook, etc?

Also it'd be cool if you could post some stats! Coolers which work well would be great, especially for those who overclock.

the unit is USB powered. it comes with a UBS dongle that has 2 USB plugs that can supply power to the unit. it also does have the option to add a 5v AC adapter (sold elsewhere)to power it which i think is very smart. also it uses a 5v fan. it seems to hit battery life about 10% with the fan and HDD pluged it. the power switch on the side only turns off the fan not the HDD so that may not suit some.

as far as cooling id say it takes a easy 10c off my CPU temp the GPU maybe 5c. just take note these are just brief observations and also i modded the intake side of the fan grill. (i also have all the vents open on my 1201n by removing the black plastic stickers inside the laptop)

all in all id say its probably the best cooler for the 1201n hands down for under $30. fits perfect (sticks out maybe 1/2" all around), its one of the quietest notebook coolers ive heard and a HDD bay... that takes the cake. im gonna try to boot from it and see how much the OS speed is impacted over the USB connection.

Sold my 1201n for $490! My friend in Brazil is thrilled, for this, (1201n) cost far more after taxes in his home town of Rio.

I went to order another but “out of stock” at Big River. I’ll keep looking but now looking hard at the ul30vt-x1 as the prices keep dropping to make room for the ul30jt?

Upgrading ram to 4 gig and 64 bit OS puts the 120n closer to the ul30 price which has this. What I don’t like is the extra weight at 3.7lb vs. 3.3lb for the 1201n not counting the hardware gains with the ul30vt-x1. 2 year plus 1 year accidental on the ul30vt-x1 if I read that right.

Oh well, I’ll dig more when back in country next week. I may end up with another 1201n!

hey guys, is there anything coming out soon similar to the 1201n? I really like it but I don't want to buy it if something similar to it and is better is coming out.

the really key factor to this netbook that i like is that it has HDMI. so is there anything out there that is 12.1", has HDMI, integrated gfx for minor gaming, current year cpu, and under $500?

I would venture for under $500, the 1201n can't be beat unless it's stolen

Anyone seen the Asus 1201T? It has an AMD CPU, 2 GB of Ram and the 1366x768 display. Unfortunately it only has a single slot for Ram, also it comes without an operating system; which is good or bad depending your level of technical expertise it also lacks the ion gpu. So this may be a good netbook for someone looking for a nice 12.1" display which may yield better battery life than the 1201N.

Hi everyone, gonna buy a 1201N soon, I'd just like to know.. anyone managed to install a distribution of Linux (eeeXubuntu, Moblin, Easy PEasy, whatever) that works out-of the box? I heard standard Ubuntu/Linux have problems with Wifi and BIOS resets, and I'd like to a have a dual-boot of Win7 and any kind of Linux on it so...

    Thanks!

I have been trying games out to see where the limit is. So far I have played Psychonauts, Prince of Persia, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, and Batman: Arkham Asylum. I haven't had much time to tweak settings for Batman, but it may be unplayable on this system. The others have done very well. With Psychonauts and Prince of Persia, I overclocked the CPU but it caused an audio/video mismatch. GPU overclocking worked perfectly on all of these, although I have a problem with how Nvidia handles their profiles.

The worst problem I have had is lag and slowness with Flash on Firefox, but even in Chrome Flash crashes regularly. I have tried the release version, the 10.1 beta and the new release candidate with no difference. I was thinking that I could tweak the GPU speed when flash is running, but I cannot figure out how to do that in the Nvidia tools. In CPUZ you can see the steps that the GPU has (2D desktop, 3D applications, etc) but can you edit them?

One other odd issue at the moment is I have lost the ability to hibernate. It worked perfectly ever since I got it til 2 days ago. When I click hibernate, the screen turns off but the hard drive does not write the contents of the memory to it, and about 10 seconds later the screen turns back on and the system functions like nothing happened. I have tried disabling and re-enabling hibernate with no success.

Yes, I could hibernate and sleep while overclocked, both CPU and GPU. But now it will not hibernate, OCed or not.

Edit- I can get windows to sleep while overclocked still.

Has anyone tried the Starcraft II beta (even with the single player hack) on the 1201n?

At native resolution and lowest graphics settings, does it remain playable throughout the entire game?

I finally got my 1201n on sunday. It's fantastic, especially after getting rid of all the shovelware. I have one issue though, the battery is going down, fast. I downloaded HWmonitor earlier today, it shows info on the battery.

it says designed capacity is 60750mWh, which is fair enough. I just noticed however that whenever I plug my charge cable in, it's capacity drops by around 30mWh! I got this thing on sunday and it's maximum capacity is now 59929mWh!! That's a loss of 821mWh in just 4 days. If it carries on at this rate, after a few months, I'll have no battery left!! What do I do? I can't send it back because of this cos they'd just call it normal wear and tear... :(

I doubt it's actually losing capacity, it's a new laptop so it's still calibrating the sensors in the battery. Doing 1 deep discharge should do get you a more consistent reading.

How would I go about deep discharging? Windows hibernates the laptop when it hits 7%, should I disable this temporarily?

Don't deep discharge Li ion batteries, you'll ruin them. Your battery has a sixth month warranty but do think your sensor will level out.

My 1201n was about the same.

It's now at 58646mWh... Over 2000 mWh lost now in 5 days :/
Can anyone check theirs with HWMonitor? See if mine is abnormal or not? Surely it shouldn't be dropping this much? If it's due to incorrect sensor readings, how would I go about fixing the sensor readings if deep discharge would break it..?

    You have no problem, seriously.

The designed mWh and your actual vary. I'm on my new UL30vt; the designed is 84000 mWh, after all night charge, 80505 mWh! Do the math.

You can start to worry when your at 3000mWh with only an hour running time left..about two years from now depending on your charge cycles and a non defective battery. I averaged about 3.5 hours on my 1201n depending on screen settings.

Laptop Li-ion batteries have a chip to help prevent the Chernobyl Syndrome. Deep discharge is old battery tech. What kills our batteries is full discharge cycles, the more you use it the quicker it dies. You can always pull the battery and use UPS to extend life or just bite the bullet when the time comes.

So I've owned this thing for a few months, and it has started to feel really hot. I got curious enough to check and my CPU is idling at 94 degrees. This is not good. I've heard there is a BIOS update that might help, but I can't try it since I'm running 64 bit Win 7. Any thoughts?

Yes, call Asus! It sounds like your heat pipe needs looked at or cleaned. All this simple stuff voids your warranty on the 1201n if you have to open it up.

I've read the rumors of the new Asus 1215n, which will combine a dual core N500 Atom, the Ion 2 (hate the name next gen) and Optimus. What kind of performance can be expected from the dual core Atom. I have an Acer 1410T with an SU2300. How will it compare to that CPU? Battery life should go way up on this model with the addition of Optimus and use of the N500 which is supposto bring a 40% sving in power consumption. Ya think?

Hey guys. I got my 1201N back in January and it has been doing well, but yea I have been noticing a lot of heat coming out of the left side and the left bottom side being hot in general. And this is with the laptop sitting on the desk. The other thing that I have noticed since about 2 months ago is that sometimes I hear my harddrive click to a stop. Is that normal? Or is that indications of a future harddrive crash T.T.

With the heat issue, we might be able to tell you if it was normal or not if you could give us a temperature reading. Mine does not get hot, but when running games and resource-intensive programs, the fan does its job well, venting the heat out and away from the netbook. Use a program like HWMonitor or Speedfan to get an idea of the temperatures coming from it during idle and under load.

I replaced my hard drive with a WD Black, and it does click too. I believe it is just normal operation and not something to worry about. I think that some power saving modes cause it to power down and then they click back to action when you need them.

That said, I would treat your computer like it is about to crash- in other words, keep it backed up. I seem to have problems with hard drives and have finally learned that.

Here are the results from HWMonitor, and temperatures seems fine i guess? Or should start worrying @.@.

Oh also, in upgrading the ram, would you guys recommend staying with ddr2 667 or going with ddr2 800?

All I have to say is...nuts!

I'm on my second 1201N now, after exchanging my original one due to frequent random shutdowns...this one is no better so far, and I just had an even weirder error: I was in Windows, when suddenly the display just went nuts. Flashing colors everywhere, and in the bottom right was a small square that was flashing different colors...it's really hard to describe, and I don't have a picture. I had to hold the power button to shut it down.

It hasn't happened again, but this is really getting unacceptable.

In the one of the early posts- I think it was in this thread- there was a youtube video showing a disassemble of it- video is here that shows what it takes to get to the hard drive. It is a chore, and you void the warranty.

@ Mastershroom- If the glitching reoccurs, I would say its a bad Ion chip. When you say that the new one is no better, do you mean that it randomly shuts down too?

Yeah, that's what I meant; it still shuts itself off in the middle of doing anything (or nothing) several times per day. I've searched other forums about this and found several long threads about it, but with no solutions, or even causes. I've tried everything I've seen suggested with both my old 1201N and this one, including updating to the latest BIOS, using a cooling pad, even disabling USB devices' ability to wake the 1201N from sleep.

Meant to post an update on this, but I am no longer having issues hibernating. I don't know what I did to fix it though... I tried updating all the drivers and made sure windows was updated, but still had no luck. Then about a week after just using sleep mode, I accidentally hit hibernate instead and it worked.

Mastershroom- Could it be a software issue? Have you tried running the computer from a fresh install without installing anything to see if you still have the issue? What programs do you have installed that either run in the background or activate/update silently?

Hendrickson- pingfreak is running an SSD. Check around page 61-62.

    mastershrom what are you temps?

cause maybe that's what causing the shut downs?

tho my temps kinda gets high still but has no problems at all.

i never had any problems with my 1201n sense i got it which was i think the first batch or so.

ony thing i am having trouble with is the keyboard clip on the left which pretty much is half broke so the keyboard gets loose and lifts up... but im not sending it back just because of that sense i don't want too get a bad 1201n..

and pretty much kinda wish i waited from buying it sense i need more power so i been using y g50vt alot now... but other than that its been a good machine.

i pretty much shouldve save up for the x11m but i kinda glad i didn't sense i herd a new refresh is coming for it :)

and than use the 1201n for my media center for my tv setup :)

I think it's pretty safe to rule out overheating. According to HWMonitor, none of my temperatures are over 75 Celsius even under full load.
