That's the problem, the switching supplies clip, thus making nasty DC output. This would have to be seen on a scope.
Your right gordesky1, when (also) charging, you can fry eggs..at least my old Dell 90W sounded like it.
-
i would like to see a wattage comparison, but id imagine we would see less than a few watts (if that) difference between non-OCed & OCed. thing is altho the 1201n power brick gets really hot its no more hotter than the brick for my 1000HE is, so im not really worried there. in my case i don't think its the brick that is the problem. im convinced its the mobo or could possibly be the battery too. but regardless ive been thru 2 power bricks in about 2-3weeks of use.
i charged the battery from almost empty twice (down to 0% once and 5% the second time) for break-in purposes only but on avg id say i charged the battery once a day from 30% to 80% charge left. most of the time i was on AC power i actually had the battery removed so i don't experience early battery death (like i have before with my Dell i left plugged in for basically a straight year).
id like to say these lil power bricks are probably pretty tough and can handle the wattage demand for this netbook. but something is just wrong with another component inside the my 1201n to get 2 power brick failures in that short span of time. -
I received my 1201N last week and it has been running good...
I've looked through the thread and searched for some info regarding reported temperatures with CPUID and have some questions...
The attached file shows the temperatures with the system at idle. I have read that the ACPI TZ00 is a zone on the motherboard and it seems to be running pretty high. Does this seems right? The CPU was running at about 49°C yesterday and today it is at about 55°C. Also, I don't see the GPU temp. Is there a way to have that displayed on CPUID?
I ran some tests with OCCT for about 20 minutes and the temperature on the CPU went to about 63°C and the TZ00 to about 76°C.
I have read about some 1201Ns running hot and want to make sure this one is not one of those.
Thanks!

It looks like your 1201N is doing good. The ones which have problems tend to idle in the mid 60s°C to low 70s°C. Like yours, my 1201N Atom starts in the low 50s°C and idles in the mid 50s°C. -
Thanks for the info 1201NFTW.
Do you know what the TZ00 temperature range should be? Running between the low and mid 70°Cs sounds too high but since I'm not sure what it exactly is measuring, I may be way off.
Thanks again! -

On the 1201N, TZ00 is a thermal zone. -
Soviet Sunrise,
Thanks for the reply. I figured it was a thermal zone but don't understand what that means. Is that just a thermocouple on the hottest part of the motherboard? Mine is reported as running in the low to mid 70°Cs during idle and have been trying to figure out if that is right. What is the allowed range? I am not sure if it is supposed to be running hotter than the CPU itself.
Thanks again. -

Low to mid 70's is very hot for idle. Are you using your notebook on a desk? What is the temperature in your room?
Unlike desktop motherboards which have several temperature diodes to monitor several thermal zones on the board, the 1201N has a very, very small motherboard, so it is safe to assume that the thermal zone that the TZ00 sensor is reporting is inclusive of the CPU and GPU. Because TZ00 is linked to the ACPI, the system relies on it as the primary determinant for restricting the CPU and/or GPU when either one or both of the components approaches it's TJMax. In other words, TZ00 acts as a margin of error. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5041328&postcount=65 -
I went for the m11x for the gaming and for non-gaming battery life. As for weight I don't have to carry the brick to work so good trade off, and at break time get in a little BS2 and when it comes out SC 2.
The m11x will be my first non ASUS machine in a while.
I will take some side by side pictures when the machine is delivered, about 4/2/10... -
Quick question.
Anyone play Starcraft (1) on our 1201n?
In anticipation of the new game I downloaded and installed the current version from Blizzard, plays great for 10-20 minutes then it will freeze. Not just the game but the whole machine. Then I have to press the pxr button for 20 seconds or show and force a power down. Not fun.
I have the 1201n on my desk with a laptop cooler. I use a M$ bluetooth mouse, but it still froze using track-pad only. Running as admin changed nothing. So I updated bios, video drivers and sound drivers but still no luck.
I did upgrade to 4gig so i tried with stock memory and it still froze.
Any ideas?
Thanks -
are you running vista or 7? ive had the same issue on my desktop with SC1 but running in XP i was fine....
-
Soviet Sunrise,
Thanks for all the info! The room conditions are between 70-75°F and the computer is usually placed on a desk or tabletop. I've been watching it again and it seems that it has been idling at about 67-69°C on the TZ00 but when I play a movie, it jumps to about 72-73°C. The highest I've seen it using OCCT (large test) was 76°C. After the test the temperatures remained between 71-72°C during idle.
Do these temperatures seem right for the conditions? Is 95°C the highest it should be for TZ00?
Thanks again! -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
95*C does not apply here. I say this because I do not know the TJMax for the GPU/northbridge. 95*C is the thermal trip set by the ACPI for a different notebook. The concept that I wanted you to get out of that post is that the system will use the ACPI temp to downclock or shutdown the component instead of using the actual component temperature itself. But from your temps, it seems like that isn't going to ever happen unless you accidentally leave your notebook running under a bunch of blankets. With that said, I wouldn't worry about the ACPI temp as on this notebook, it is merely the temperature of a thermal zone. Your eyes should be set on the CPU and GPU/northbridge temps.

Can the 1201N stream 720p/1080p netflix without stutter to an external tv via hdmi?
-
A quick test, seems to think it will be OK, I dont think it is running at the max resolution since I am tethered via my phone and away from home. But silverlight does offere GPU acceleration that is enabled under netflix so it should be all set.
-
I get good results through my PS3 and Xbox but, overall, no where near as nice as broadcast 720p. I got 5 mbit cable but read that it's no better at higher speeds.
Overall convenience of Netflix can,t be beat, but still go through the trouble to mail DVD's. -
Hey guys, how long would the battery last on a 1201N if the screen was at full brightness with wifi on ?
Thanks... -
like just browsing the web?
its around 3hours or maybe a bit over that which what i got.
but playing videos its gonna be somewhere between 2hours and 3hours same with gaming. -
got my 1201n back today... they replaced the mobo... thank god. my temps are soo much better now. i cant help be pissed i got a refurb mobo in a laptop ive used for less than 3 weeks, but at least everything is working the way it should now.
anyway now i can finally get back to using this thing again. oh and i grabbed a nice 3Dmark06 score with this new RAM.

hey guy,
It had a refurb sticker on your mainboard? No jumpers or resin marks on it?
In todays economy it's odd that time and money is spent repairing. Cheaper to send to landfill, let our kids deal with it.
Where and how much for your 677 GSkill please?

I think I might want a bit more battery life than that (gotta think about it). Just in case, what's similar to the 1201N but with a little more battery life? -
so far the other 2 laptops that has close performance too the 1201n but the 1201n still wins is the hp 311 which ony has a singlecore tho and the acer Ferrari one.
there also the version of the 1201 series that is coming out with the ion 2 which suppose too have really good battery life but it also has just the singlecore..
what im waiting for is a bigger aftermarket battery too come out for the 1201n like a 8 or 9 or 12 cell battery that should give 6 too 8hours of battery with the 12cell it should be more than 8 hours maybe. hopefully they start making them soon. -

Ok, first post, over the past few days I've been through and read every single page in this thread lol and am SO tempted to get the 1201n. I have a few questions though.
At the moment I have an Acer Aspire 5051 upgraded from 2.0Ghz turion to 1.6ghz turion x2 and from 1GB of ram to 3gb. It's a 3 year old laptop and it wasn't exactly fresh from the factory when I got it.
How would the 1201n stack up against what I have at the moment? I'm pretty sure the ION graphics will be better (current ati radeon xpress 1100 I think), but how would the atom 330 compare to my current turion x2 TL-50?
You guys all talk about it running at like 80 degrees C, is that not pretty darn hot? Does it feel hot to touch? Or is it relatively alright, my current laptop runs at around 55-60 C most of the time, going up to 65 on the odd occasion. I use my current laptop on a laptray and I'd probably do the same with my new one, so it'll always be on a flat surface
Could you guys test a couple of things for me? My most played game is Atlantica, 's a pretty generic (graphicly) MMORPG.
The most intensive app I use at the moment is flash CS4 on my desktop, haven't tried it on this laptop but if it could work on this netbook I'd be so happy, I'd be able to take it to college to work on it instead of the terrible college computers.
Not too worried by battery life, 4 hours to me is pretty phenomenal, like I said I've has this laptop for about 3 years now and according to HWMonitor the battery is now running with only 7937mWh/44400mWh and gives me a battery life of only about 30-40 mins in power saver mode!
I won't be buying my new laptop/netbook until early next month, but want to get everything sorted in case I need to buy myself a bit more ram in advance of buying the new machine!
Thanks in advance! ^_^ -
@ hero9989
if you post a link to a demo of what game you want tested ill run it for you. -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StrTl-djp-Q
I imagine it will run better on the 1201n.
How's the game, btw? -
Nice, glad to hear it'll run, I'd imagine the atom 1.6Ghz dual core isn't much worse than Celeron dual core 1.2Ghz? The 9400m ion should be a LOT better than the intel 4500.
As for how's the game, I love it, but i'm a Final Fantasy addict and the battle system is pretty reminiscent of that, except maybe not quite as in depth.
If somebody could try a Flash CS4 (I think you can get a 30 day trial for it on the adobe site ( http://www.adobe.com/downloads)). If Flash CS4 works then I'm 100% sold! -
One of my favorite games, Call of Duty 2 runs great. lol I know the game is 5 years old but it is great!!
-
Don't forget to wear helmet. After dragging my P6831 around; you will hit your chin picking up this wee notebook.
Go get it! -
Ok! Just need to find a place to get it in the UK now lol

could anyone do me a huge favor and test the empire total war demo, and or the ruse beta for playability? RUSE ,can only be set to medium in the beta so if its a bit choppy or slow thats okay
-
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5901929&postcount=387
i can try to get the RUSE demo going but may not be for a few days. -
sorry i missed it man, i must have missed it before, but it does seem playable. i would guess performance would improve with 4gb ram a bit. Load times were always long no matter what you were on (even my i7 desktop with raid0). basically unit size is the only variable here that i would like to know about (physical # of peeeps on the feild), and when you do this can you make the largest army possible, as in as many units as you can form in an army for a battle?
i would greatly appreaceate it
Ruse is just playablity(like stated i dont think you can change the quality), but i imagine on low it should be okay. -
i can totally re run it for you. how did you want me to run it? OCed with 4gb or what? plz specify, that way i can try to simulate how you would run it to get the most accruate results for you.
FYI: my current config is in my sig -
Have you run a pcmark with your 1201n at 2.0? Just wondering if you're noticing any speed improvements in general aps, rather then graphic specific stuff.
-
I have an i7 desktop so, this will solely be for use on travels, or weekends away or at home ect.
Also this runs source based games decent right?
and thanks man ur awesome +1 rep -
-
i don't know what im doing wrong but i cant get a score with PCmark05 because one of the tests fails. (video encoding? ?) i don't know if this has something to do with running W7 or not. pretty sure this program was designed for Xp but i have no clue whats up.

figured it out, i had to download this

the review on this site seems to have gotten a 2117.
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5434&p=2
and i grabbed a 2421 so id say it helped.
as for Empire total war...
pretty much as expected. results were noticeably better but not by a lot. the new HDD did shorten load times by maybe 1/4, i would assume the faster OC helped in this dept too. game was very playable on low settings @ native rez with "ultra size units" selected. when a lot was going on i was getting about 15FPS avg. every once and a while it would dip into the single digits for a few seconds but this maybe only happened 5 or 6 times the whole battle.
id say avg FPS way around 20-25. prob could be even better if i had tweaked settings even further and or OCed to 2.1ghz.
mind you this was in the first battle that comes up in the demo. i dont know how the later stages get so use you judgment here cuz i am totally unfamiliar with this game.
hope this helps.Attached Files:

im 99% sure this is a atom thing and no bios "fix" can help it. id say it has to do with the temp sensors inside the atom CPUs. i wouldn't worry too much tho.
i actually had my finger pressed onto the 2 cores while the system was running to check this very issues out. even tho core temp was reading over 70c the cores barley even felt warn to my finger. the ION how ever.... now that gets hot! and i wouldn't take that temp for granted.
also another note on the atoms temps i don't believe the sensors work below 25c... they just seem to be locked or "stuck" there. once above the "stuck" temp they appear to work normally (well normal for the atom anyway). i have a similar problem with my Q9550 and a Q8200 i once owned.
P.S i ordered this yeasterday.

its the only place i could find a REAL ASUS battery. not even ASUS has any in stock right now. (ive been burned by cheapos beforeso i had to have the REAL thing!) ill post the authenticity of this battery once i get it in a few weeks (it coming from HongKong)

Wow, $125 bucks? My "genuine ebay" Dell battery was only $60. This thing must have been built by elves?
I'm so cheap! -

just a lil update. i went here
http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm
and disabled all but 2 of the services in the "tweaked" section (i knew i would need the 2 i left in).
it added much more snappy-ness to the OS. i would easily say i noticed more improvement in general response than when i added my 4gb kit. it was quick and easy took like 10min. if you find something doesn't work right anymore you can just go back and reset stuff to what it was before. -
Hi there,
I just wanted to say I enthusiastically join the band wagon on this 12.1 inch

Still waiting for everything to ship.I don't have much intention to OC ...well, maybe a little.
I figure I'll benchmark and test the temps before and after I do the upgrades.
I plan on keeping everyone in the loop as I get these results.
Is there anything I should know that should be of help to the 1201n or avoid doing? -
* Depending on how much time you have, either uninstall the crapware or reinstall windows (Personally, reinstalling windows took less time)
* Run the computer for a while before cracking 'er open. This way you can make sure there are not problems with the pieces you aren't replacing
* Know that the little yellow sticker that voids the warrenty underneath the keyboard is VERY fragile, but can be removed with a sharp razor CAREFULLY as if you were dismantling a bomb
* VLC alone will NOT run HD video (AFAIK)
I'm sure I'll think of more... -
I'm going to guess 1 of the services was ALG
What was the other?
