I have re-pasted with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and run some games and Cinebench tests.

Cinebench I got multicore score of 1216 and temps of about 70C, undervolted (-125 -49.8). Good for this CPU.
Both PUBG and Apex Legends saw the CPU sit at around 75C (max 81C) at 3.1 GHz - again undervolted. Frame rates were also nice and smooth/stable and both games usually over 100fps. I am so happy!

I quoted my "bad thermal paste application" as I had envisioned a poor spread of paste on the CPU causing my issue. Not no paste whatsoever. This was a bit amusing to me.

Having read this entire thread and I have to thank everyone who posted something helpful such as Bobs teardown, testing of undervolt settings and explanation of how to get the best from your own CPU. I've had experience of doing this sort of thing to laptops but I just didn't feel like I wanted to this time, but I am glad I did and this thing should last years permitting no other issues. Cheers.

Same after i updated to the 308 bios and use a USB C hub, though for me once I unplug the USB C hub she boots everytime so I was chalking it up to the hub being an issue, I'll keep monitoring to see if I still have this issue with my hub unplugged.

Nice! I'll follow the same route when I replace this laptop's fans.

Mine are making a weird noise, as if they're worn down. Particularly the fan on the left palm rest.

According to this listing https://www.ebay.com/itm/SET-NEW-FO...ountry-CPU-GPU-COOLING-FAN-DC12V/152135547370 they are supposed to be fluid-type bearing fans.
I'll be buying that set for the replacement, with the hope that they'll last longer than the older ones.
    Can such fans be salvaged?

An update: For whatever reason, my fans no longer produce the grinding sounds. At least since Wednesday.
I'll hold off installing the new fans for now, and will keep monitoring them incase this changes.
The ones I ordered from ebay are already here. Received them this morning via DHL.

These fans are looking good to me! Have you compared the numbers on it with the old one's?

If you want to change the fans a few images of the process and the vrms would be awesome!

Would be awesome! Are you willing to try vbios modding your machine? You got a hardwareflasher handy? Would be nice to see some different results from a machine this thin and light.

    Yes.

No, not yet. Do drop me a recommendation that I can purchase online, and the steps needed to flash the modded VBIOS.

Me too! The cooling overhead on this system is insane!

    Hello!

I just purchased a Zephyrus GM501GS-XS74 with an upgraded Samsung 970 Pro boot drive and a 2TB Micron 1100 SSD. I have heard about a few issues of the Bios updates and I don't want to upgrade everything and screw up (or brick) my new computer. What Bios update should I be on to steer clear of all the issues? Any other advice to start with?

What issues? And with what BIOS version, to be specific?

    1. Undervolt. Use this offset: -125mV for the CPU. Leave cache untouched. You'll run into stability problems otherwise.
    2. When gaming, switch to the Overboost fan profile.
    3. Use a headset when gaming. The point above is why.

I had the same issue, fixed by replacing the fans. To do so, open the five and four screws on the top of the left and right fan assemblies and lift off the old fans. Then disassemble the new fans as above and refit the new fan assembly in reverse, and you're done. For this, you won't need to mess around with the heatsink to replace them.

Thank you, I'll research further into this. The cooling overhead on this GPU is amazing in such a thin chassis!

If you really want to do the tdp mod you need to repaste with lm. Otherwise temps going to raise too much.

you can undervolt cache to around -49mv to test, if it runs instable go up a bit, i never had a zeph m who wasn't able to run at least -45mv on cache (had 3 in my family) :) also as stated before, liquid metal does a really great job on this machine specific

concerning the fans, be super cautious with replugging them, i bent the rpm sensor pin on one of them resulting in that fan not reporting speed an just spinning up to 100% instantly after boot (making the mobo useless)

here are the settings i used atm, since temps are so awesome i never optimzied those more and just used them as is for the last two weeks and played some games ^^ will get back to optimzing them more soon though, also will play with higher clocks.

btw: i forgot to check what i set as cache-multiplier, it might be 35, i will check when i'm home. and if it's 35, i could go higher, but how i stated, i will optimize those settings soon :)

for 3.8ghz i have it set at:
    core: -160.2
    Cache: -65.4
    System Agent: -20.5
Intel gpu & igpu unslice: -49.8

    for 3.9 i use:
    Core: -155.3
    Cache: -50.8
    rest same

i would try cache at -49.something and see if that's stable (had one machine who couldn't run more than -45 on cache if i rember right). if it's stable play with the core offset. then when it's stable, try a higher cache offset until it's not stable anymore. for a quick reference of stability i check with throttlestop's ts-bench 1024, then p95 (at least that's how i do it).

i was just thinking the same, but i usually don't note settings in one specific file before i tested them using prime (i have a temp-settings file where i just note whatever i'm testing and then an other one where i only note rock solid ones. i had those settings in the stable one (as i'm at work again), so they should. will check even though later on quickly =)

Do you know if the fans are magnetically fixed, and so, if they can be easily removed?

This because I want to clean them the best way possible. After about two months and a half of intense use, I noticed a substantial increase in cpu and gpu temperatures without any noticeable changes in ambient ones, and I found out that, despite Asus claiming that fans are built with an "anti-dust" system, this is not true at all:

    20190224_130634.jpg

The situation above only after two months.
As a result, after cleaning fans surface with a dustcleaner, temperatures dropped by almost 10 degrees, going back to be pretty much as they were at the very start.

I strongly suggest you to check yours too.

Hello guys! I believe all Zephyrus M concerned problems can be posted here. My problem is that after half a year of use I decided to reset my windows for it to be clean. All of it was smooth, installed all required drivers and software, but one thing after the reset is weird, which did not appear before the reset. If the laptop is unplugged, the fans are silent, if I do something more serious with the laptop while on battery, they, of course, kick in a little bit. But when I plug it in, it just starts blasting! Even though the laptop is totally idle and all the programs shut off - the fans are kicking! It wasn't like that before the reset... Tried changing battery plan, when on battery saver it was kinda ok, but I was always on balanced mode. Any ideas?

Did you check if fan profile is set to silent or balanced in rog gaming center, and NOT to "overboost"? Overboost spins up fans no matter what you're doing, this is usually the case why it behaves like that.

It was always in Balanced mode. If I put it in Silent - it's silent. But after the reset, balanced mode is like 70% Overboost, even though the laptop is super idle. Previously, in balanced mode, the fans would either be ultra quiet or blast when gaming.

Has recent updates for GM501 done any better job on battery life while in optimus mode? I feel like it extended a bit but it could be a placebo effect

Still the same. It's weird how when on battery, being idle the temps are ~40C and when plugged in ~60C. +1Tab on Chrome and the temps are 70-75... That would explain why the fans start spinning, but still, it wasn't like that before the windows reset :(

One more edit. So I downloaded CPUID HWMonitor software to see the numbers and I see that when on battery all cores clock speed holds around 1.1 MHz, but when plugged in, they all immediately jump to ~3.99 MHz and stay there. From what I understand it should jump to these rates only when I am doing something intense with the laptop and not while watching a video on Youtube... Maybe that's just some settings that needs to be tweaked?

    ok check this.

Go to PC Settings > Privacy > Background Apps (from the left pane)

Now turn off all background apps except the ones that are mandatory like for example, if you have any audio enhancing tool that came with your laptop like Realtek or MaxxxSense or others, rest of the apps don't need to be running in the background as it consumes resources and might spike your CPU usage.

Secondly, what Antivirus are you using?

Thirdly, open up command prompt as admin and type winver followed by Enter then tell me what it shows as your Windows build number

PS: Do you have any app from Apple installed like iCloud or iTunes?

Turned off all unnecessary apps, rebooted - still the same. Antivirus is a free version of Avast, but it never caused any problems. Windows: Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.677). No apps from apple, I do not use their products. As I understand the i7-8750H is a 2.2 Ghz processor with a turbo boost up to 3.9 Ghz. That should mean that it should usually stay on 2.2 and go up to 3.9 if it is necessary?

Hello again. So I decided just to reset my windows one more time, maybe it was bugged or something. Last time I chose to keep my personal files and just reinstall the windows, but this time I chose to wipe everything out (except my DATA partition) and it looks like that worked. The temps are good (while not playing anything ofc...) the fans are as they were before and clock speed seems OK right now. So yeah, wiping everything out of my C partition did the job.

I have been having problems with CPU temps spiking. Using HWinfo and playing the Witcher 3 on mostly low settings (but a decent amount of the post processing on, which should be only a low performance hit) and an fps cap of 60, I get averages of 86, 80, 80, 76, 77, 72 and what is really concerning are the maximums of 95, 91, 95, 90, 90, 85. I have also seen spiking of CPU temps in DOTA 2, but Heroes of the storm runs fine, which I understand is fairly less intensive.

I have not undervolted + overclocked, but I went to go through the steps and my baseline fps is 300 fps and my cpus start to overheat on the tests on 1v with a range of added values at -502 MHz. My setup is that I have my notebook connected to CoolerMaster base with a fan (don't think the fan works super well), external Klim Cool fan that I used on the upper left vent. I run on discrete graphics with overboost. All background apps off. Plugged in with maximum lifespan mode (60%). I have had the labtop for maybe a month or two now.

Any suggestions for dealing with this problem or optimizations to help with the temperature? I ordered a can of air to clean out my fans and it arrives Friday or Saturday, so I will try that.

    Hi Guys,

Since I have it, I have a weird sound problem on my Zephyrus gm501gm (using Windows 10 Home, current Build 17763.437 (1809/RS5))
    could you help me, please?

    0. I got my laptop with pre-installed Windows 10 Home, I haven't reinstalled / tweaked it

    1. After starting the system, both laptop speakers work fine.

    2. If I plug in some earphones, etc into the 3.5mm jack, I can hear stereo sound from both sides, it's OK.

    3. But after I plug the earphones out, only my left laptop speaker works, the right one remains totally off, no sound comes through it.
    - I checked the Windows sound settings and the sound balance is OK (in the middle) so theoretically both speakers should work, but only the left one does.

    4. If I reboot the system, the right speaker still does not work (no matter how many reboots I do).

    5. The right one remains off until I go into the UEFI BIOS and turn on the boot sound "whoosh" again (which I hate so I keep it disabled) then voila: the both are on again, but only for a while: until I plug in and out the earphones again.

As I can always revive the right speaker by doing this, I suspect it's a software error somewhere in the system.

    Have you also experienced this?
    Any solution
apart from this annoying BIOS boot sound on/off workaround?

Would appreciate any advice, thank you in advance!

    Hi Guys,

Another problem with my Zephyrus gm501gm, since I have it (it's 9 months old now):
weak, but audible, annoying rattling noise coming from the right fan only.

I haven't cleaned it yet, since I bought it.

    Have you also experienced this?
    Any working solution? Cleaning, replacing?

    Thanks in advance!

There is fan noise on mine too, both left and right fans. I'll try cleaning it up first but if that doesn't work I'll maybe purchase those replacement fans from ebay posted a few pages back.

Hi all, I have 60Hz external display and 60Hz projector. From time to time, when I restart my laptop with any of them connected through HDMI, suddenly the screen keeps switching between blank and normal in random short intervals and frequency falls to 54Hz, even though windows is showing 60Hz. When I change it to 50Hz, display is showing 45Hz, etc.

This is super annoying and I didn't find a clear way how to fix it, google didn't really help either - I tried restarting both devices, even unplugging the AC cord from the monitor/projector, restarting with/without HDMI connected, etc. Sometimes it fixes itself after many restarts, usually it takes quite a long time (~15-30 minutes). I even tried to change display driver, no luck.

    Anybody with similar issues?
    Thanks.
