    Hi all, new owner here.

I have done the undervolt and it is working a treat for temperatures but I have a question regarding silent mode and how it functions.

I can turn on silent mode and play apex perfectly and still with low temperatures, fantastic.

I tested witcher 3 on balanced, great, a bit loud. So I tested it on silent mode. Big performance hit. Does silent mode not just limit the fans? Does it cut performance power too? I wanted to just see how witcher ran on full performance but lower fans. Is this possible?

Thanks so much for your help, I have other Q's too but will deal with one at a time. Thanks!

Yes, it does. Silent mode limits gpu frequencies based on use, in order to limit temperatures.
However, I think silent mode is still great for games that don't require too much performance, or if you just just want to stay around 60 fps instead of higher 120/140 (for example, I finished Hellblade just on silent mode, ultra settings, without any performance loss). For this reason, it mostly depends on the game itself.

Thanks so much for your response. Clear now! Is there any way of controlling fans without limiting cpu?

I'm not sure actually, but maybe hwinfo does it. Without limiting frequencies, though, I fear you would only get lower fan noise with much higher temps.

Does anyone know what "ASUS_FRQ_Control" does? Do I need it running?

Also is there a comprehensive post or list somewhere of things to do when you get this laptop, what to delete, what to tweak etc? If not we should make one.

Hi, I have applied some suggested throttlestop settings to my new laptop to help with temps and all seems well whilst gaming, however when I do the TS bench, there are errors at 12 threads, is this something I need to worry about?

Also, do I need to set up throttlestop to start the program with windows? My settings seem to have stuck, but i am unsure of how to check that. Thanks so much!

Hey all, how "whiny" are your fans Like on silent are they quite high pitched under load? I am thinking of sending back my laptop because the sound it doing my head in a bit. I do not mind the noise it is just the pitch.

Hi can I ask you guys to do something a bit weird? I'm having real issues with high pitched sounds coming from inside laptop. Can you hear anything from yours if you put your ear to keyboard? Specifically top left. Like intermittent beeps, kind of like an old modem.

Also if you pick your laptop up and angle it, do the fans make rattling sounds?

Please let me know, I need to know if I am going to replace with same model or different laptop. Thanks so much!

Anyway, nice to see that Asus doesn't give up on support.

From my observations, it is loaded on startup by Asus Live Update.
I have also seen the same utility download and install it, so at this point, its' best assumed to be a fan control program routine of some sort.
The last time Asus Live Update installed an update for it, the fans on the GM501GS-XS74 ran much quieter on idle even on Overboost profile.

    Hi all

I have a Zephyrus GM501GS with GTX 1070. It doesn't have a displayport. I have bought an HMD that needs a displayPort. I understand that I can use a USB-C to output a displayPort, but I tried with a USB-C to displayPort adapter and nothing is going out, all that is detected is "USB HUB 3.0". What am I doing wrong?

    Is this the Rift S?

I came across this video describing the problem you're going through.
In the video, the OP recommends the following adapters:
    1. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K51GM46
    2. An extension cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L1K1G74 (6ft is what he recommends).

Unfortunately I cannot replicate this as I neither own nor use the Rift S and the aforementioned USB C to DisplayPort adapter on such a configuration, so your mileage may vary.
What I can confirm is that external displays will work fine when plugged into a Thunderbolt 3 dock, even when daisy-chained to other docks. That is how I use the GM501GS-XS74 on the desk in the study.

No, I have a different HMD, a PiMax 5K+. How do I know if my Zephyrus has a video output on my USB-C? There are conflicting reports on the forums, most saying the Zephyrus has a USB-C but no display is connected to that.

    Hello

Yes you can use a USB c to display port adapter, I'm using this one currently https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075V27G2R/ with my Zephyrus M.

Also this is useful if you want to run external displays with higher than 120hz refresh rate. The use I have it is running a 32" 144hz display.

Hdmi will limit the display to 120hz.

But should work for your situation

    I have the GM501GS.

No I did not have to install any drivers.

I have mine running with a display port with 32" 144hz monitor and a 27" Monitor on the hdmi. So running 2 displays. But I don't have any virtual headsets like the HMD to test or give you info on it.

One could be the USB c to display port cable you are using. Or checking if yiu have drivers installed if yiu did a fresh install.

    Hi guys

I have got a different cable from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01LZKFOWG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The cable got detected as Billboard Device, and kept connecting and disconnecting neverendingly. The displayPort display unit never managed to get detected.

Reading the last two replies at Microsoft's site https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...ndows-10/8ea9ef93-382b-44d6-9d53-6b5dd7d34570, apparently I may need displayPort drivers on my Zephyrus. I have the latest USB and Thunderbolt drivers from Asus' website. Is there something wrong with my Asus?

Hi guys, thinking up upgrading for an external HD 60mz screen to a 144hz screen, maybe 2k?

Do any of you game on this machine and use an external display at 144hz or 2k? or both? Please let me know your experiences, will I lose a lot of performance?

Has anyone tried the new .312 bios? It has to be downloaded through the asus support page and flashed manually, cause winflash doesn't seem to find it.

If you have the 1070, 1440p is the perfect choice, cause this card is made for 1440p gaming. Of course you'll get some performance drops, but definitely not as much as with 4k. Just don't expect to run recent games at ultra settings on 120+ fps, but you will still be able to play most of them at ~60 fps, or even a little more, depending on the game itself.

I guess I have to choose high fps or high resolution because I cannot have both. I think I will stick with HD and get a 144hz monitor, playing on my laptop screen has been so smooth it feels weird going back to 60fps.

bios 313 has been running smooth for awhile now, I think they even fixed my issues with Aura sometimes not wanting to start.

Wondering if those of you who purchased new fans have them installed and how that is going. I have cleaned mine only a few times now and think they are lasting pretty well, but it looks like there are some upgrade options now.

It's been a few months now that my cpu temps (under stress) are particularly high, despite undervolt. I had to limit multipliers to 32 on 5th and 6th cores and cap framerate to 60-80 fps max to avoid temps of 90-96°, but still temps are high with peaks of 88° and 85° for CPU and GPU respectively with balanced profile, while around 82° and 78° with overboost profile. Of course I could put it always to overboost, but it's loud as hell.

Ambient temperature is around 25°, high but not so much I think to justify those temps, and from what I can tell there is no dust on fans. Laptop is one year old and I never repasted, so do you think it's a thermal paste problem?

Definitely sounds like it could be due to dried thermal paste.

Has anyone had issues updating to windows build 1903?

I need that build for playing gears 5 thru the Microsoft app.

    I've tried everything to get that update, plenty of space left, disabled/uninstalled everything 3rd party on start up, ran the updater troubleshooter, ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow, ran chkdsk, ran the following;
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptSvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
    Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
    net start wuauserv
    net start cryptSvc
    net start bits
    net start msiserver

I've even used the media creation tool and attempted to update from that, all fails ...

I'd hate to do a clean install of windows, sooo many mods I cannot even remember, beat saber mods, skyrim mods, system tweaks ... man i'd have to remember them all and re-due them.

Does repasting void the warranty? I bought mine in nov 2018. On the label it says manufactured in oct 2018 but i had 88-95 degrees temps on both CPU and GPU from the start.

    Just bought a Zephyrus GM501.
Wondering if anyone knows the brand of the NVMe SSD it comes with from the factory? I'd like to replace it with a Samsung 970 EVO, but id like to know what's in it before I do, so I have an idea of how much I will be able to offset the cost of the 970 when I sell the original.

Hopefully this hasn't been answered already!!

I'm having trouble even running Code Vein consistently above 60fps. Fans are on Silent.
Is it worth repasting or should I talk to ASUS?

    Hello,

I just tried BIOS 313 for Zephyrus GM501GS, but not change on XMP-2666 memory support.
It still defaults to JEDEC #9 at 2400mhz after memory upgrade.
Still no ability to set it to XMP manually in BIOS.
    • Crucial stated firmly that their memory was fully compatible with the laptop model. "100% compatibility"
    • The laptop is also marketed by ASUS as upgradeable.

Laptop Model: ASUS ROG Zephyrus GM501GS-EI004T
Memory Upgrade: Crucial for the Ballistix Sport LT 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2666 SODIMM

    Quote from order confirmation, Crucial, Micron Technology;
    "Part description:
    CT12243107 BLS2K16G4S26BFSD.000 UPGRADE FOR A ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS M (GM501) SYSTEM

It is wierd in my opinion that top end gaming laptops do not offer the settings required.
Especially if they are marketed as upgradeable.

Also wierd that Crucial are able to state "100% compatibility".

Anyone on top of a solution for this?
I do still believe that the memory upgrade made the memory faster than the stock ones, if you take into account the latencies or actual bump in memory available up from 16 to 32. But not sure.

Thanks in advance for any further thoughts or feedback.

    Best regards

Does anyone know if Zephyrus S gx502 or gx531 fans can be mounted on the Zephyrus M?

    Hey guys,
My warranty had expired since then and ASUS wanted $70 just for diagnostics (F*** you ASUS!)
I decided to apply thermal pads where the paste was on the VRAM(Arctic 4237) and a thermal pad on the CPU and GPU (IC Graphite)
My temperatures have dropped ~20 degrees idle

On load the CPU is always less than 80 however my GPU reaches 90 because my right fan is not working. I will be obtaining a replacement fan and battery as my battery is worn out.

Hi, has anyone had any luck using any kind of splitter or hub with the USB C, so I can plug in my monitor as well as keyboards etc?

Does that have sufficient bandwidth to handle all of those devices that you have? What if it's just a single device?

I use both USB C and a Thunderbolt dock (each connected to a setup in different rooms).

    My USB C dock:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DW4TFJP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    My Thunderbolt dock:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZPV8DF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The USB C device has a 24' BenQ monitor, Drevo RGB mechanical keyboard, and a Logitech G600, all connected simultaneously without issue.

The thunderbolt hub has that and much more connected at all times. Both work great, no bandwidth issues at all.
