Received the replacement today - learnt from my mistake to be VERY careful when changing the RAM and HDD...! All changed successfully though, and seems fine.

Weirdly, I had to install all the ASUS stuff manually - Armoury Crate wasn't installed etc.

Just downloading my STEAM library to give it a run through it's paces.... the 'discrete' graphics mode is the G-Sync mode, and the 2070GTX, correct?

    Hi, owners.
Can you upload vBios (90.04.3B.00.BC) for NVIDIA RTX 2080 from this model ?

    Have a few n00b questions I'm afraid...

    1. When Armory Crate is set to 'discrete', that's G-Sync, correct?
    2. I'm guessing the 3ms refresh should also be enabled in AC?
    3. I've managed to get Throttlestop to undervolt by -110 mV... is that good?

EDIT - my Aura settings keep either not changing or getting stuck. Anyone else have that issue?

Me again... has anyone had any issues when connecting to a TV? When I connect direct to my Samsung Q9, I only have the choice of stereo output. When I connect to the AVR, I get the full options of Atmos, 7.1 etc.

@codral I would love to see benchmarks for the new 9th gen model equipped with a 2080 MQ.

Im really interested in buying it, but no rewiews are coming out!!

    My questions are:

    1. Does the 2080 MQ actually performs better than the 2070 non MQ?

Because on HIDevolution the model equipped with the 2080 MQ costs 800$ more than the one with 2070. o_O

This is what i found out so far for the 2070 model. Can you provide me these numbers?

    Fire Strike
    16535 PT

    Cinebench R20
    2895 PT

    Overwatch
    170 FPS

    2. Is it actually worth it to buy it from HIDevolution and repaste it with Liquid Metal (Conductonaut)? Or just go with the Kryonaut?

    3. Temperatures? Have you repasted it? Undervolting? Does XTU works fine out of the box?

    4. You guys suggest me to buy the 9th gen Zephyrus or just go for something else? Any issues so far with it?

I am also interested in the MSI GE75 9SG Raider, equipped with a 2080 and an i9, of course repasted with liquid metal on HIDevolution.. i would like to hear your opinions before choosing.

I will use it for rendering on cinema 4d, photoshop, and other adobe products. Some gaming here and there.

@fireedo i would love to hear your opinions too.. reading and searching through the thread i found out that you too have the latest 9th gen model equipped with a 2080 MQ

What is your priority? Battery life, performance, weight?

    If you're running productivity tasks I'd recommend finding a laptop with an i9 9980HK or i9 9880h.

Yes, i am into productivity tasks, and a Core i9 would be appreciated..
But i can make a compromise, an i7 9750H instead of an i9 but with the battery life, the design and the thermals of the Zephyrus.

That's why i was asking stuff about the Zephyrus.. go for the 2070 or the 2080MQ model? Temperatures? Repaste? XTU? :)

    Offtopic:

Here i made another thread where i am asking suggestions for a new laptop in general:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...i7-9750h-vs-msi-ge75-i9-9880h-or-wait.830309/

However.. Weight up to 4 kg with charging brick included, more than that could break me while carrying it around hahah
Battery life 3/4 hours is ok, i always bring with me the charger because i need 100% performance.

I'm inclined to say go for the 2080MQ because it gives a good boost over the 2070MQ but $800 seems a bit too steep.

Maybe instead of the zephyrus you can go for the MSI GE75. It's the thinnest and lightest laptop with an i9 9880h and full rtx 2080 (2.7kg). And since 3-4 hours is enough for you it should be fine.

    Note: it's a 2070 non MQ, versus a 2080 MQ.. i think it's different from what you said :)

However, yeah, 800$ still looks too steep for me

which "reset" option did you use in windows? "reset this PC" or "clean installation"? are you on windows 1903? did you reset to the ASUS OEM image with the old armoury crate and rog live? if so did you have to uninstall or install the armoury crate services and rog live yourself?

would appreciate the details you did to make it work. thanks!

Hey everyone, I’m about to pull the trigger on a GX701. I’m looking at the HDR model. However, I know that it does not have G-Sync unlike the other models. My question is this: is the Mini DisplayPort directly connected to the GPU, and if so, shouldn’t it be possible to connect a G-Sync external display to that and have a G-Sync option to take full advantage of the 2080?

Hello guys. I've bought GX701-GXR i7-9750H, 2080 Max-Q, 32GB RAM,... a week ago and i have done some testing regarding temp and undervolt using ThrottleStop.

Out of the box GPU temp while idle/browsing etc is around 40-43C and for CPU 47-60C but mostly CPU is around 50 with occasional jumps to 60C.

Out of the box GPU temp under load while gaming ( Greedfall )/3DMark TimeSpy 1.1 is around 66-67C average with occasional spikes to 70-72C and i'm ok with that. CPU on other hand is little hotter and temp's are around 80C average with jumps to 85-86C so because of that i've decided to Undervolt CPU with ThrottleStop.

I've tried many combinations and for me best result is -0.8mv both core/cache and limiting Turbo to 3.8GHz all cores insted 4.0GHz. With that combination i don't have any problems with bsod, freeze or anything. I can do -0.7mv and 4.0GHz all cores but i got better temps with 3.8GHz and -0.8mv.

So temps with configuration above. GPU stays around 66-67 average but CPU average around 72-75 this time with jumps to 80-81 but very rare. I didn't lose anything in performance but i got lower temps.

I can get probably even better temps with custom repaste but i will not do it now but in a few months when i plan to clean fans.

And above temps are while using Turbo profile in Asus Armoury Crate. Underload ofc. Laptop is quite while idle/browsing etc.

Really liking this laptop - to the degree I'm selling my desktop PC and just using this laptop.

However, one thing that really annoys me is the MyASUS app; it keeps telling me there are updates, yet they never download or install.

Does anyone know if flashing the 2080 max q to a higher tdp is possible? I have an spi programmer unless it can be done through windows itself. Was just really hoping to push this thing, I do plan on putting fujipoly pads and new paste in it to. Maybe LM at some point.

I apologize for missing this earlier.

    Here are the true facts.

You bought it through Amazon on May 13th and it was delivered to you on May 18th...not April.

We shipped you an ASUS factory sealed box directly from our warehouse...check your tracking history. It did not come from our Amazon inventory stock that already had Gelid GC Extreme applied and had gone through our Q.C. before sending to Amazon. As you said in your Amazon communication with us you had to break the ASUS factory seal tape on that box yourself when you first received it. We never opened it.

You then reported the 'damage' 28 days AFTER you received it. Any reasonable person that opened an ASUS factory sealed box, with the amount of damage you show in the pictures, would not have waited 28 minutes to report it, much less 28 days.

While you say the time stamp is not editable, that is not true. See - https://www.iphonelife.com/content/how-to-change-date-stamp-photos-your-iphone "Hold down the Shift key while clicking on all the photos whose dates you want to change. Next, go to Images and click Adjust Date and Time. This will allow you to change the dates for all the selected photos at once."

You also claimed twice in your communication with us through Amazon that "I'm nearing 40..." yet your profile here says you are 20.

We will let these facts speak for themselves.

    HELP!

Bluetooth has disappeared from my GX701 suddenly; not appearing in device manager etc., meaning my mouse and keyboard won't connect. Anyone have any ideas? Tried installing the drivers again, but doesn't work.

It's likely the BT part of the Wifi/BT card died, it happens, but it's also just as likely a Windows update messed up the device entry, so it's worth trying deleting the entries and re-scanning for the device.

You would go into the device manager, Show Hidden devices - whether it's showing or not showing - and delete all the hidden devices and the live device if it is showing.

You could then reboot and let Windows scan at boot, or there should be a "Scan for new Hardware" menu option in the Device Manager, try that first.

If scanning before reboot doesn't find the device, then try power off and power on to see if the device is picked up after booting into Windows - for extra credit - at power up go into the BIOS and see if the BT device is showing anywhere in the BIOS menu's.

If you can't resurect the device, it's likely dead, and AFAIK that BT device is also on a Wifi card so you'll want to get a new Wifi/BT card - look at the device socket to see what kind of keyd socket it is before ordering - you can cross lookup your existing part number to see what socket it fits to verify.

Good luck, and please come back and let us know how it works out for you. :)

I tried all sorts - the BT wasn't even in device manager.

However.... I just had a windows update for the ASUS firmware update, and that's now fixed it - it's re-appeared!

When the BT device didn't show up in the Device Manager, did you check "Show Hidden Devices" or "Rescan for Hardware Changes"?

That might have solved the problem too. If the BT device was ever seen in this Windows Install, and was "lost" it would still have a Hidden entry, and if not then "Rescan for Hardware Changes" would do the same as the Windows Update did.

Glad it's working for you now. :)

Anyone had issues with their computer trying to turn itself on while closed? Mine tried to commit suicide a couple of days ago by turning itself on while it was closed up in my backpack. Sucker was HOT by the time I finally noticed and pulled it out to save it.

It happens all the time if you have "wake" or start on lid lift, even a sensitive trackpad set to "wake" or start on "movement" under the lid can turn on the laptop - wake from sleep / hibernate.

I gave up on using those features - setting them to do "nothing" in the Windows Power Options, and then the finding of a "hot laptop" in the backpack stopped.

There may be a timeout for sleep as well on some laptops as the battery drains near zero - then it just wakes up instead of shutting down. I vaguely recall being stung by that, so I started using Hibernate instead which is really a shutdown with a saved state.

Then I got tired of the huge footprint of the hyberfil.sys in C:\ (hidden file) that's the size of memory (hibernate uses to store memory state), which was 64GB for me at that time (I also disabled the Windows VM swapfile pagefil.sys).

I started booting clean each time when fast SSD boots started to become available, saving my work and shutting down every time instead of going into sleep / hibernate.

So I guess I am saying you could circumvent all of that and just disable sleep / hibernate...powercfg /h off as administrator...

"Nuke the site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure."

Thanks for letting us know. That's very unusual for not even a Hidden entry to be left behind. It's the first time I've heard Windows Update blowing away a whole device - entry, driver, and hidden entries - without the device being automatically re-scanned and re-added.

There must have been a bug MS caught and fixed with that update that re-initialized the entry in the Device Manager.

I've had an offer from ASUS to extend the warranty to a 2 year warranty... I'm tempted, but the 'Chinglish' terms don't make for easy reading...!

Does anyone know if - by changing the hard drive and the RAM - the warranty is voided...? If it is, there's no point in me getting the extended warranty, but if it's not, I'd be tempted.

EDIT: Here's the response from ASUS:

"Thank you for contacting ASUS Support.

Be advised that any tampering will void the warranty, as there is no compartment on the back of your laptop that will give you direct access to the components you want to upgrade.

If you need any further info, we'll be glad to assist. "

Glad I didn't spend £££ on the extended warranty then...! Seems ridiculous that you can't upgrade the HDD or RAM without voiding the warranty.

Well, the issue is, as they said, there is '...no compartment on the back of your laptop that will give you direct access to the components you want to upgrade." They mean, the RAM and SSD are not installed under the service panel on the bottom, so it takes a complete teardown to get at them. This should only be attempted by a trained technician with experience doing so because there is too much risk of damage. If you bugger it, it is on you without any warranty protection.

It would probably be best to contact your vendor to do any upgrades you need.

A youtube video and some care during disassembly will go great lengths to prevent any damage in my experience.

It's not THAT hard, though maybe not for the faint of heart :p

    1. anyone else feel 'power pulses' when they rest their hand on inside logo?

    2. I apparantly don't have the original charger. Mine came with 20V, 14A charger instead of 19.5V, 11.8A charger.
    I have the GWR (115W full 2070)

Who has a 2080max q 8750h version willing to test a vbios? Need to know if it will work for others before I post it live

Strange - the USB 3 port by the USB-C and HDMI connections has stopped recognising my connected USB hub. Was fine until a couple of days ago - now, everything that is on the hub keeps connecting then disconnecting in a cycle.

If I connect a single device to the port, it's fine. The hub also works in the other USB 3 ports.

    Does anyone have a GX701 vers "XB78"?

I cant understand whether this one is the one without Gsync (HDR panel) and/or has the 2080maxq with enhanced tdp at 1000+mhz

This looks like the one, with a 990mhz 2080 @90w:

(Free 2nd Year Warranty) ASUS ROG Zephyrus S GX701 Gaming Laptop Bundle, 17.3” 144Hz Pantone Validated FHD IPS, RTX 2080, Intel Core i7-9750H, 32GB DDR4, 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD, Win10 Pro, GX701GX-XB78
    https://www.amazon.com/Zephyrus-Validated-i7-9750H-Processor-GX701GX-XB78/dp/B07WGJG4GB

This came up first as ES - Spanish, and the seller TinVIA may be outside your area, but look around - at least this listing has the technical info and component build out details for the model. :)

I didn't seen the refresh rate on the HDR panel, but the other option is a 300hz refresh panel:

Well, it says right there on the page that it's the right model number, XB78, but it says 144hz / 3ms which I thought it was 300hz / 3ms, but that might be the HDR screen refresh we didn't know about. I'd check directly with the gentechpc guys.

The gentechpc guys are great, ask them all your questions directly or here on NBR :)

    @GenTechPC

My 144hz Freesync (G-sync compatible) HDR screen (monitor, not laptop) has all those things, so they aren't necessarily incompatible.

The only "downer" that I can see is that the laptop has Optimus (Intel iGPU) mode that doesn't support G-sync which I wouldn't use - but it has a discrete GPU mode that does support G-sync, only thing is I can't see what the refresh of the HDR screen is (60hz??) and it's all not clearly layed out.

I wish Asus had a chart of models like MSI that lists all the individual components - not perfect - but a bit easy to see answers like you are looking for.

Again, the @GenTechPC guys can get the answers for you, I think emailing them on their web site is best. Also they have a video review channel on youtube, but I don't see this particular new version of the GX701 (300hz!) reviewed yet - you could ask them to do that and post it here:

Would anyone be interested to test a vbios that will ligit make the max q 2080 like 30%+ faster? I need to see how it works on other 701 laptops before I make a guide.

According to this thread on reddit, the model i linked is definitely the one with no Gsync due to HDR screen : https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/bzjbq4/need_some_help_with_my_gx701/ . there is version with G-Sync, the GX701GXR , but not sold in USA and I dont' know where it is. Oh well.

At this point the best version available for this laptop has to be the namesake of this thread: GX701GX-XS76 . This comes only in 8th gen CPU tho, which is fine.
If you have this model, can you conferm that in this case the 2080 GPU is already at 990 mhz ?

I eventually after many tribulations went for the GX701-XB76.

By no means I am an expert, but willing to learn and very much able to follow instructions to the T.
What should the first things I do once I receive the laptop be?

Reading from threads around here, the order seems: remove all bloatware -> fire CPUZ and paste here the results.
Really looking forward to some kind folks on this thread to enlighten me on the right ways to maximize performance on this laptop - don't mind serving as a testing ground for your suggestions.

Also definitely interested in flashing that vbios from full RTX2080 on the RTX2080 mq.

    Hey,

My processor overheated reached 95 degrees after a few seconds of maximum load. I decided to replace the thermal grease (Arctic MX4) with a CPU and GPU. Now the temperature on the CPU does not exceed 85 degrees [Prime 95, Furmark - CPU Load 100%, GPU Load 100%]. But I'm worried about the GPU temperature - RTX2060, which during a long maximum load reaches 82 degrees. Is not it too much? Room temperature 23 degrees. Armory Crate profile: "Perfomance"

    GX701GV
    RTX 2060
    i7-8750H

    Thanks and regards

82 seems pretty toasty for a 2060. Are the fans at maximum or auto?

82 degrees is the maximum value I have observed. When playing, the temperature reaches 80 degrees. Fans set to AUTO. What difference does the RTX 2060 or RTX 2070 have as the same TDP?
