The 100W 2080mq is really the main reason i bought this laptop.
However after some weeks of use. I noticed the fan on the right (close to power button) when spinning around 3000RPM sometimes make high pitch noise. Noise will go away very soon once the fan spin faster or slower. Hard to describe but it's there, and i am not the only one that have a odd fan.

Has anyone noticed any issues with the USB power delivery?

When I plug my 60W dock into my GX701, the laptop just continuosly cycles between charging and the battery, and the internal display just keeps turning on and off constantly (presumably as it adds and removes the HDMI out on the dock).

Interestingly the dock does function correctly when the laptop is plugged into the power brick.

Please also note, this is the 2tb NVME from my GM501 with the windows install for that rather than a fresh install of windows, or the pre-installed version of windows that ships on the 660p.

ASUS Zephyrus S (GX701) Gaming Laptop Review
    Jarrod'sTech
    Published on Apr 2, 2019
The ASUS GX701 is the 17 inch version of the Zephyrus S, so it’s quite thin with some powerful hardware inside. In this review we’ll take a look at performance, thermals, overclocking, battery life and basically everything else you’d want to know to help you decide if it’s a laptop you should consider buying.

Hello. I've recently purchased the GX701GX. I've been enjoying the laptop, however I ran into something that I cannot wrap my head around.

As with other laptop users I'm sure, I've needed to expand on ports and have been in need of a Docking station. Now 99% of the docking stations out there, at least the good ones, are Thunderbolt 3. For quite some time now, I had been under the impression that thunderbolt 3 and USB type C had become cross compatible so I went ahead and purchased a docking station.

I'm in need of many ports since I have alot of devices. I settled on the Caldigit TS3 Plus after reading many good things about it.
    https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3...s&qid=1554395186&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

However I cannot get it to work with my GX701GX connecting the power to the power brick, then to the dock and from the docks Thunderbolt 3 to my computer using the TB (computer) port. I've contacted Caldigit support through amazon and also through their website and they keep telling me that I need a thunderbolt connection on the laptop and not USB type C.

However I've read about others using thunderbolt on the GX500 series, which according to specs, also has USB type C and not thunderbolt.

I've been on the asus rog forum. That place is empty and nobody ever provides any service. Last time I tried to contact asus' online support, they also knew nothing about the product.

I feel so lost and would really appreciate any help.

    Help! :(

I may have misunderstood, but to me the video is showing that Thunderbolt is working correctly on Dell XPS as expected, but not with the Zephyrus as it doesn't have Thunderbolt. The GM501, GX531 and GX701 all have USB Type-C ports wired for DisplayPort, the functionality that seems to be working through the dock can be done without Thunderbolt (the only issue is the 2nd screen not working, right?)

I don't know the pin out differences between TB3/USB Type-C, I can only assume they have similarities though (eg same pins for data/display transfer) so that both can be used with the same Type-C port. My guess is that in that example, and for many other devices, limited functionality is possible over USB, but interested to see what other people with more TB3 experience have to say.

Hello, the connector for Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C is the same.

What I want, is a dock I can use that has multiple DP/HDMI, has power delivery has several usb-c fast transmit, gigabit ethernet and several usb 3.0 ports. I need more ports for the gx701gx, thats why i got the TS3 Plus dock

Anyone else got coil whine in their GX701?

Its really starting to frustrate me, and in NZ, its not a cause to return a product (god I wish we had Amazon)

I got some very soft coil whine sometimes, but it's far from noticeable when playing any sound whatsoever without pressing my ear to the laptop.
I did however, have significant fan noise on the CPU fan, and a tiny bit of fan noise on the GPU after some time. And I read that I'm not the only one.

Are you sure it's coil whine and not the fans spinning out of alignment?

Irregular clicking, only while gaming in intensive games, that doesn't happen when i manually max out the fans? I'd say so.

If it was quiet I'd be all good with it, but you can hear it over the internal speakers, AND the fans @ 100%.

    Sigh.

So, my laptop has been returned. Some slight hiccups but things mostly seem to be in working order again..

For the heck of it I tried to benchmark it again, and then this happened!
    https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/35653197?

My old scores hovered below 8000, but now I've gotten above 8000! Perhaps the RMA guys re-pasted everything? Both GPU and CPU went up so I doubt it's a driver thing, the closest score is still like 240 points difference.

I got 9106 time spy graphic score on the machine. The highest temp is around 83 after I re-pasted it with tf8. Stock thermal paste is too much imo.
Additional setups, including undervolt cpu -0.046, overclock GPU 130/200, and some other windows power setups I learn from this forum.

I placed an order for one of the new GX701s with HDR, however to achieve this Asus has removed g sync completely and only use optimus. Now this video pops up.

I will be gaming while plugged in for the most part, is there a way to completely disable optimus if needed or will it always add that extra overhead when using the laptop display?

Edit: not possible only solution is to plug into an external display or to get the previous generation with gsync Optimus switching (which is what I did I just canceled my preorder).

Never heard of any one disabling Optimus on big brand OEM BIOS. Maybe with PREMA it could be done?
A high end, 3k+ $ gaming laptop without G-Sync or Freesynch is a sin. Cancel the order.
You could salvage the situation if it had HDR and 4K screen, turning it in a decent portable home theater, but 1080p HDR is a joke when all HDR content these days is 4k.

are you guys having any issues with armoury crate? It just stopped working for me. it's now missing a bunch of aura preset effects (including the custom per key feature) and I can't change the fan speeds either and all the apply buttons are missing (except the one used for manual fan speed). I've uninstalled and re-installed. I've also tried the new armoury crate service core (v2.1.2) but when I do armoury crate will only have one menu icon (highlights).

the gx701gx laptop is amazing, but asus's hardware controlling software sucks very bad

Nah I didn't change anything. I currently don't have XTU and my laptop isn't undervolted and I haven't changed any of the settings for the overclocking. I just turned it on the other day and I noticed AURA wasn't working correctly.

at this point I'm wondering if a windows update could have screwed it.

I ended up canceling my order and going with the previous Gen that has manual switching. In the end it performs similarly as the new cpus barely provide any improvements and once you factor in forced Optimus the previous generation with gsync outperforms it.

yeah, the more I think about it the more it seems like a windows update may have caused it. I see there was a .NET update a day ago (as well as a bunch of others around the same time). I'm about to investigate this further.

ok so if I remember correctly there was an "apply" button for fan speeds in armoury crate, but I don't see one now. I do however see that the setting changes for the fan speeds do apply after exiting armoury crate, so the problem now is that AURA no longer works correctly.

Yeah I was shocked especially when the performance difference was that big just because it has to go through the Intel gpu. Using an external display fixes it obviously but I'm not buying a thin laptop to just leave it on a desk. Hopefully next generation they bring back the switching but right now if you want the most out of the 2080 max q on your laptops screen you can't get any of the ones with the new 9th series cpus as they are Optimus only.

Ok, so I turned my laptop off for awhile (had class) and when I came back and fired it up I now see my scenario profile option came back (it's the icon that looks like audio tuning sliders) and I see that under the Device menu there is a system icon that looks a little grayed out but is selectable. inside that there are 3 tabs and the lighting tab has all the other presets for lighting there were missing (the per lighting is now just called custom instead of custom1 and custom2).

the main armoury crate menu has a menu item called AURA but it is only for aura sync which is limited.
I thought it was an update to a new armoury crate but I see the version of AURA, armoury crate UWP, and armoury crate service is the same.

mobiousblack, can you tell me if you're seeing the same under the device menu?

The presets work such as pulsing color wave etc but they only work on the keyboard all other lights are off. As for custom the icons for them are no longer present.

so under the system menu in the "lighting" tab you should see a blue button to the top right called settings. click that and you should see a few settings for controlling the lighting on boot, wake, and sleep. in that same area there should be two checkboxes, one that says keyboard and one that says laptop light zones. make sure both are checked.

Took me a while but I found it. However the checkbox is greyed out can't select it for some reason. Thanks for taking the time to find this they really need to work on making this more user friendly lol.

Now to figure out why I can't select the checkbox for laptop light zones...

no worries. now, hopefully, Asus doesn't mess it up again. during my research, it appears that people have been having issues with this software and its many iterations over the years especially the AURA lighting

I just got the gx701 yesterday and i'm unable to get the ROG logo on the keyboard or the lid to work properly. The Armoury Crate is also missing the customize options or settings option under Aura. My only options are sync devices and aura effects. It only lists the basic effects, no customization or anything.

I've tried downloading an older version of the armoury crate service (1.4.1 and 1.4.3) and that doesn't change anything. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything but nothing works. I even called Asus yesterday and they couldn't figure it out and said it must be a hardware issue. I don't think it is though, i think it's an issue with the Armoury Crate software.

I looked everywhere for the location mentioned a few posts above in this thread about looking for the settings button under the "lighting" section, i don't have a lighting section. I have an Aura section but there's no settings button anywhere.

Anyone else? I'd really hate to send this laptop back because of this but i didn't spend 2k on a machine to have issues from the start.

Hi everyone, I was playing "Overwatch" on my ASUS Zephyrus S ROG GX701GX and noticed it crashing once in awhile....probably three times within the past several weeks and of course, saw Armoury Crate showing that it reached 94 degrees and the laptop was super hot.

I have mine set at Balance but curious, if others have had issues with crashing and shutting down during gameplay due to high heat?

Greetings Mine, also has Sync Devices and AuraEffects, I don't see anything about customization for keys. I see you can adjust the basic effects, such as "Rainbow" "Starry Night", etc.

Yup that's what i see. I just sent the laptop back. I know it's probably a software issue but i didn't pay 2k for a machine to not work fully out of the box. Plus, i just saw the new Alienware M17 that's coming in July so i'm probably going to go that route now.

It's there but annoying to find whoever thought this new software update was user friendly should be fired. If anyone is having trouble finding the lighting effects area and how to enable the logo and the vent slots let me know I'll make a video.

I've looked everywhere, i don't have the option. If you can show me a video or point me exactly to where it's at that'd be awesome.
