Can someone please confirm whether the Thunderbolt 3 on the Zephyrus M is 2 or 4 lanes?

I really hate the flimsy raised base vent.
When I get mine, I'm going to remove the mechanism that props up the panel when the lid opens so it stays permanently closed then laser cut vent holes where the fans are.
My only concern is the lid hinge may stick beyond the base when opened so I might also have to add some rubber feet on the back.
I just hope the red LEDs in the vents can be turned off

If that is the case, you have wasted your time pasting it.

I run OEM paste, just undervolted to -125mV and under full load CPU hits max. 94 while GPU hits max. 82C after around 1.5 hours of Witcher 3.

I also ran OEM paste before, but with worse results, especially on the core differential.
Not all CPU's are the same.

Can anyone confirm if the refresh gx501 using the original design with the shifted down keyboard has the improved keyboard like the M counterpart and if Optimus/g-sync switch is also available?
The only things I know is it also has the refreshed 8th gen CPU and updated the 144hz display. I not even sure it has g-sync.

There is basically no reviews for the updated gx501 with 8th gen and gtx1080mq.
Is there actually any advantage to having the keyboard shifted down mean in the centre like tradition laptops?
The old body actually thinner and shorter than the M Zephyrus.

I'm looking to get the revised gx501 with the gtx1080mq and the 8th gen chip.
Are both ram slot open or just the one like on the original?

I'm eyeing the refresh of the new model, ROG Zephyrus GX501GI-XS74, with the Core i7-8750H this time. Anybody know if it has the same exact battery? I've seen horror stories of the previous model (with the i7-7700HQ) inflating and pushing the keyboard upwards. Was wondering if the refresh fixed this issue or not? I don't expect stellar battery life nor do I really care about it as I have mine plugged in most of the time. But I want one that doesn't try to explode.

Just unpacked my Zephyrus M today and I have to say the quality control is pretty poor.
I immediate noticed the my unit had a loose bezel on the bottom right corner and on both sides further up plus the lid along the right side isn't straight.
There's also a bit of play when I lightly tap on the track pad.
It's a shame cos the built quality and material used is great.

Ugh, that is the worst when those types of things happen. Can really ruin the experience of a new system. Is everything performing ok so far?

Do you have these issues on yours?
I tried contacting the seller for an exchange unit but was denied. Said it was within factory tolerance and wasnt a defect.
Apparently the bezel is held on my clips not glued so it might be possible to pull it off and reattach it back properly.
I dont think I'm being fussy especially with a extensive machine.
I also think I'm experiencing ghosting when i move rhe mouse curser rapidly. The mouse curser trails a bit but i think it's just one of the animations features enabled within Windows.
Wifi also seems so be slow at times.
I've only played around for a few hours so three might be other issues.
However I'm very bothered by the built quality flsws on my particular unit.
Should i continue pushing the seller for a refund?

    Hi guys!

Anyone else suffering from speaker distortion?

My left speaker is quite noisy, just moving the windows volume dial and it hurts to hear. It's like something is rattling around it.
Putting pressure around the CAPS LOCK - LSHIFT and LCTRL area makes it go away.

    Here's a video of the issue -

I found this thread on Asus forums - https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?96896-ASUS-Zephyrus-GX501-speakers-distortion
A few people there with the same issue. No answer or solution from Asus.
I tried some of the suggested software tweaks but they have no effect, it looks more like a physical problem.

I have exactly the same issue with my Zephyrus. It seems to be a physical problem because when I lift up the front of the laptop it seems to be good. No solution from ASUS available and non of the driver updates worked for me.

I have to say that the ASUS support e.g. response in the offical ROG forum is just a joke...

Nevertheless I'm very happy with my device after heatsink change and repaste with liquid metal. Temps are just great (75C - 80C) under full load. Fan noise in ECO Mode is very quite. Haven noticed any lack of peformance in ECO mode. Only the fans are getting more quite.

It really sucks. I'm trying to get Asus to fix it or replace it before doing any sort of mods.

I'm dying to put some liquid-metal on it, it'll be awesome with it I bet.

Did you also replace any of the thermal pads or that thermal goo?

yes that does sound like a physical issue. Since you already opened up the system. I would suggest just checking the speaker to make sure all of the wires are in there securely and that it is seated properly.

Desperate for larger M.2 SSD storage on my Zephyrus GX501GI E1012T, as I can only fit a hand full of games.

It seems 2TB is the readily available maximum capacity for a single M.2 SSD. One frustrating thing with the Zephyrus is the single only M.2 SSD slot. Though I can forgive this because of the amazing small slim size of the Zephyrus GX501GI, I still long to have more internal storage. If there was a single 4TB M.2 SSD, then I'd be all over it like a hawk.

    But wait, what's this….

Hi there, I bought the 1st gen zephyrus 1080 max q with the i7 7700hq 3 months ago. So far, I'm vary happy, overall. What's the ideal temp under load for both CPU and GPU? Currently, I'm playing hunt showdown I'm getting 78 cpu 76 gpu on low of course, according to ROG center. I just want to know where to keep my temps when playing.

Hello all I just placed an order for the latest gx501 with intel's 8th gen 8750h gtx 1080max Q Ive been looking for teardown videos for awhile for it. is there only 1 memory card slot? so you are stuck with 16gb max? is there any performance difference between single channel and duel channel ram?

Only one RAM slot yes. It has 8GB internal RAM so the max is 24GB when you put a 16GB stick in it.
I think it runs dual-channel but I'm not 100% sure. Pretty sure though.

There is a performance difference yes.

Oh what! Sorry to hear that djcgeez2189. I bought my 8th gen gx501ig in April 2018 and I loooooooooooooooooooove it. I just upgraded the nvme with a samsung 970 (1TB) two days ago too. Installed a fresh copy of win10 and all drivers and updates and running flawlessly. I would highly recommend still returning your defective one and getting a new one. This laptop is a beast. I plan to do the ram next, but researching it right now.

Wow. I feel you man! My unit also came screwed from the factory. Left speaker was making all kinds of weird noises.
I sent it for a RMA and I’m still waiting on it... 3 weeks have gone by.
If it reaches 30 days I’ll just ask for my money back. Can’t be bothered to wait any more...

    How’s ur temps?

Temps as outside the laptop? I feel warm air blowing out from the left side of the laptop. I never put it on my lap, its usually always on a desk when using it. Temps internally, i'll have to check the temp monitors next time I game. I'll ss it.

I got the new one and it works good but the temps are pretty rough it gets very hot, my cpu sits around the 90s in gaming and the keyboard gets hot during gaming surprisingly since there is nothing under it im surprised considering there is nothing under it. Performance wise its pretty good im going to end up returning it because the battery life is abysmal aroud 2 hours or less even when on low brightness and just typing a word document on battery saver. For $2900 its only about 10-15% better than the razer blade 1070m I was planning to replace with this. The gsync is nice and makes some games look nice but doesn't work on everything. and not being able to turn off the LEDs on the bottom are kind of a turn off for work use. but if none of that bother you than its great. but you can get the same or better performance for cheaper

You can turn the red LEDs off. Look around the BIOS or Asus’s control center.

G-sync has to be correctly configured. You’ll have the same issues in every machine if you don’t limit fps to 2-5 under the screen’s refresh rate.

Temps and runtimes I agree with you. They’re abismal.
The system throttles under prolonged loads even with uV. However performance in games remains pretty stable

Hey guys, I'm sorry to hear that some of you are suffering issues. I'm coming from Aorus X7 DT and Aorus X9 gaming laptops and must say I've been nothing but impressed with my Zephyrus GX501GI 8th gen Hex core.

Regarding most pro level gaming laptops; I would never expect more than one and a half hours runtime on Batt and that's with GPU performance greatly reduce in battery mode (especially rocking a GTX 1080, even with Max-Q tech). Besides I always have gaming laptops plugged in when I go from room to room, or different buildings and have yet to see any gaming laptop run triple A games at max performance in Batt mode. However I would agree that it would have been nice, even essential if the GX501GI could have a power mode for doing basic internet task, watching videos and non-gaming applications that enable the unit to run for at least 5 to 6 hours or so, possibly by reverting to an Intel Iris Pro chip for graphics and switching to 2 CPU cores with a low power state. You would think that this would be possible.

So far I've been lucky and not had any issues with my GX501GI Intel 8Th Gen. The only thing I'm waiting for is a 4TB version M.2 SSD because just a few games fill the single internal M.2 SSD straight away and there's no 2nd M.2 slot (to keep unit incredibly slim).

The slimness-to-performance ratio of this gaming laptop is truly mind-bending in my opinion.

    Hi everyone,
I'm the proud new owner of this fantastic laptop. I bought it used and windows is clean and all reset. Therefore there are no eSupport folder. So the keyboard lights does not work - numpad don't work. So I guess I need the eSupport folder.

Drivers and links do not work from the asus.com website either.

I saw someone in here upload the eSupport folder for VSK version... I need it for the VIK version. Is there someone kind in here that can upload and link for the folder?

    Hope someone can help me...

From what reviews are stating, it seems the thermal solution used here is pretty much at its' limit, even on the redesigned GM501 with the 1070. A 1080 in there is a bit of a stretch.

What hotkey gets you into the BIOS on boot?

I just own this laptop for about 1 month now. I would like to say that I'm pretty happy with this laptop overall. The gaming is smooth with that 120+hz screen (never had a screen beyond 60fps before, and yes I'm activating GSync), keyboard is really comfortable to type on, temps are pretty good considering this is a 1070 + hexa core 8th i7 laptop (I only do uV, not yet repasting cause its gonna void my warranty here). It stays on 87-90 C on full load (gaming MHW on High settings or even doing stress test with fan overboost on).
1 thing I noticed tho. The CPU wattage is related to fan profile, so when I actually use silent profile, my max wattage is somewhere below 30W, in balance max wattage is 30W, and in overboost max wattage is 45W.
and I noticed that even in 45W (with 87-90 C) my zephyrus still managed to maintain the 3,8Ghz speed without any throttling (or maybe it throttle to 3,8?) But yeah it's still a really good performance.
The only thing I don't like is battery life, really, and the performance on battery (it's really limited, when I'm playing MHW normally it'll range about 70-100 fps but on battery it'll be 15-25 fps).
Overall I'm really happy with this laptop. I hope this one can last longer for me (consider I've changed 3 laptops in just 6 month). Hope this will help someone to make a purchase decision!.

PS : Seriously the screen is really good. and the Mic Mute button build in is really useful for when I'm doing Voice Chat.''
I just realized this is a GX thread one instead of GM that I'm using.. please ignore this posts.

(Lol srry wrong fix for different issue. Fixed post)

I dont have the laptop anymore due to battery expansion (explosive) issues with a GX501 and similar issues with the replacement.
Both units had the caps lock issue as well as track pad issues.

    Posted video below for reference...

I suggest watching battery wear very carefully in HWInfo.

I switched to a Triton 700 which is ok. Performs better than the gx501 with better thermals.

I would not recommend taking this laptop on an airplane... or as a main laptop in general.

Asus required video proof, took a week to "verify," then called me up and asked if it caused any dismemberment or property damage...

More like razer. Paying for form over function. If Asus used higher end parts, it would be less of an issue.

@HamzimusPrime -- maybe add these vids to first post in the thread as a warning?

Not sure honestly. I personally think its a quality issue. Could also be poor circuitry. Whenever I used it for any performance intensive tasks the battery would always jump a few tenths to even several % higher in wear, which generally stuck permanently, in HWInfo

dude, just go exchange it. you got a defective unit, it happens.

i bought a brand new dell inspiron 15 for my dad, as a basic computer for internet/accounting, it had a defective touchscreen right out of the box. since they were out of stock on the dell, i exchanged it for an Asus laptop w/o touchscreen. my dad says he really wants a touchscreen, so i returned the asus and bought another dell inspiron 15 from amazon with a 4 year squaretrade warranty for about the same price as the dell + warranty, i bought at MC.

did you ever get the drivers/software?

    i have the GX501VIK version (7700hq, gtx 1080 max-q)

i may be able to help

Had this laptop for about 6 months now (original 1080 maxq version)

Temps are getting crazy, 96C, while running cities skylines (CPU Heavy). I have cleaned the fans previously using a strong vacuum to suck out all the junk, but now I'm traveling and can't do that.

What's the easiest/most efficient way to clean the fans?

I also just undervolted the CPU 100 Mv to see if that helps.

Edit: The undervolting seems to have decreased the CPU temp by about 10C, which is awesome! As a result, GPU temp is lower as well.
