Have you guys update to BIOS 306. I've been running it for 4 days now. No issues.

    Hi guys,

Just got my Asus GM501 1070 version in yesterday.
I love it, I think the build is quite brilliant compared to my previous AORUS X3 Plus V3, the only flex I see is in the bottom plate where the laptop raises.

Just a question about undervolting, but how does one do such a thing, would you recommend it for my model and how would one go about doing this?
I'm currently ignorant to the idea of undervolting having never done it before.

    Cheers!

Yes, I would recommend undervolting. Download Intel XTU and install it. If you dig around, you'll see something like "core voltage offset." Start incrementing that number lower and lower into the negatives, each time clicking apply to save your changes. Eventually, you'll go too low and the computer will blue screen and crash. Start your computer up again and go into XTU. The voltage offset will have reset back to 0.

Set the voltage to as low as you can go without it blue screening. But just because it hasn't blue screened when setting a voltage doesn't mean that it's 100% stable yet. From there, start doing stress tests with prime 95 or by playing an intense game. It may still crash. If it does, start incrementing your way up until you no longer get blue screens while testing. Save that voltage as a profile and it will be your new default voltage when the computer starts.

For me, I was able to reach -160mV without blue screening. But when playing games I would blue screen. So I worked my way up to -120mV and I haven't had a blue screen since.

    Thanks for the detailed response.
What'll happen if I get rid of Intel XTU after undervolting?
EDIT: Probably not going to get rid of XTU, that s*** is freaking amazing.
Undervolted CPU by -100mV. Crashed instantly at -125, worked up from -200.
Might try -105 but not sure.

Anyone tried it with the GPU? Just curious.

I don't think you can undervolt the GPU, as I think it's locked. But you can set a custom curve in MSI afterburner. Check YouTube for tutorials.

Because a BIOS/EC update might contain critical bug/security fixes...And the EC manages the fans, the sensors etc. So yes it might be worth updating.

There's a GX501 with coffee lake planned but it does not have Optimus....In Europe it's already out I think.

I have an extra brand new power brick for the gx501 I'm willing to sell (~$200 plus shipping) makes it around $40 less than what Asus would charge for one.

PM me if you are interested. It has never been used and is in original/plastic wrapping.

Asus doesnt really sell these. It came with my replacement unit and I already have 2 of them...

    Hi everyone :D

    New user, and owner here.
If I have to introduce myself somewhere I will do it asap.

Back to business, I'm here because I need the help of another generous owner.
On my new GX501GI (the i7 8750H - GTX1080 model) I started experiencing frequent BSODs after Windows April 2018 update.
On tech support advice, I rolled back to the previous Windows 10 Build but, instead of using the built in function to do that, I made a fresh install from USB.
The issue is I forgot to make a copy of the eSupport folder located on the C: drive, and I lost all the OEM software.
I know there's a Driver and Software page on Asus website, but some things seem to be missing there.
For example, I can't find a versione of Aura Sync that works with the Zephyrus' keyboard.
Is there out there someone willing to send me a copy of their eSupport folder?
It should contain the Asus gaming software binary and all the certified drivers.

Please take me own of this mess, I need my RGB back :(

    Best regards, Federico.

    Hi

Joined a few days ago to the "West Wind" community.
    I own model GX501GI-EI018T.

So far so good this machine is surprisingly amazing.
Temps are good and i managed to undervolt it by -0.110v.
    Very happy with this purchase.

    Willing to help my friend.
But i think you need the setup file in order to install it properly.
If you think it will help just tell me witch folders to upload.

I need the folder called "esupport", it should be located in the root of the c: drive.
I would Zip it and upload it to google drive or mega, but what works best for you, also works for me.
You can PM me the link if you don't wanna post it directly.

Someone knows where I can get a new heatsink for the ASUS GX501VIK ? Can't find one on eBay or google.

Mine seems to be bent in a wrong direction so I can't ge enough pressure on the CPU. Got high core differentials after repaste (2 Cores are good and the other 2 are 5-7C higher). Tried it 4 times know but I guess the heatsink is uneven. I'm using liquid metal...and yes I have tried more liquied metal aswell ;)

EDIT: Found one on my own.

Any good tips to cover up the "Republic of Gamers" branding on the rear and below the display? Buying this as a desktop replacement. Will be using in a professional environment hence I do not want the words "republic of gamers" anywhere on the notebook. Torn between this and the Gigabyte Aero with 4k display.

Did it help? I repasted but still get an difference of at least 7°C up to 9°C. Curious if it is worth it. And if it helped, did every core changed to the min core temp?

About the "Rep of Gamers" below the screen, I would like that as well. It's just so ugly and I can't understand why anyone want such a thing. Maybe it is possible to scrub it away, or someonte tried nail polish?

I would suggest using a lower heat hair dryer and like a plastic scraper to try to get that removed. Just go slowly and don't blast it with tons and tons of high heat

Try Methanol or Acetone submerged (small amounts!) in a piece of fabric.
If you go for the heat&scrub route try not to melt anything or worst even damage your screen.

    Hi all,

Am now the proud owner of ROG Zephyrus GX501GI EI012T and its great!

I come from (in order of most recent) Aorus X9 CF1 (GTX 1070 SLI), Aorus X7 DT v6 CF1 (GTX 1080), Aorus X7 Pro v3 (GTX m970 SLI). They were great/epic machines and I still miss them, especially the X9, however I had a problem with random "frame rate nukes" on the X9 only when playing the most demanding triple A title games such as Wildlands, AC Syndicate, The Division, etc. I was considering getting the newer X9 DT with single GTX 1080, but somehow came across the Zephyrus GX501GI EI012T and was both very impressed and completely sold on it. It's a masterpiece like the Aorus X9, but ridiculously slimmer, lower priced and does no have the frame rate nuke issue I had experienced previously. The hinge-vent mechanism also sold me.

Anyway, back to the GX501GI and all I can say is that I'm so glad I came across it. I will no doubt have a few questions, any help is really appreciated so will post them at some point.

    Thanks. I thought so too.

Anybody here with a stealthy or skinned GX501? Im just a few clicks away from buying the GX501 with 8th gen but the "Republic of Gamers" logo is really putting me off. Will be using this on a professional environment. Looking for ideas how to properly stealth out the ROG logo.

Nope but I'm trying to remove it, since I can't stand this ugly logo. Guess I will try something without Acetone first, but didn't have the time yet.

About undervolting. I can really recommend Throttlestop. Thanks to Throttlestop it is possible to undervolt further, since you can undervolt the CPU Cache and Core separately. But be aware, the Cache must be undervoltet to a specific degree, otherwise the core Voltage can't be undervolted any further. I think the have a specific ratio.

Anyone know if its possible to remove the ROG splash screen from boot up?

Edit: Is the "republic of gamers" logo at the lower part of the lid flushed or raised? I plan for a stealthy look and will cover it with a sticker/vinyl

This is with what linux version? Ubuntu with 4.15..4.17 kernels still seem to have problem with non-working touchpad (elan 1404), even with the clock patch.

    Everything else works great though.

Do you guys think it is wise to downgrade to GM501 from the 1st Gen GX501 ? I dont mind the keyboard placement, but is it worth for the difference of CPU and panel?

In my opinion you won't notice the difference between 4 core or 6 core CPU in games. I would stay on the 4 core CPU because of cooling. What I have seen the 6 core CPU is getting a bit to hot. My GX501 runs at around 80°C on PUBG (repasted with LM). The panel is indeed something I want to have. But I will replace it in my GX501 if it is available somewhere. Well I like the IPS Panel on the GX501 but the response time is around 500% higher than in the GM501.

This machine under load can run very hot.
I get near 100C in machine learning use cases.
I think ASUS gone too thin for this hardware.

We will see how long this machine last raped 24\7 by AI algorithms.

Take a look at the temps:

Even the 4core gets quite hot at combined load. Undervolted to -160mv (max V ~1.08, most of the time around 0.98) and repasted with Mastergel Maker.
If GPU and CPU is under full load CPU hits 93°C while GPU hits 80°C after around 15mins. Roomtemp was around 25°C

Yeah but I don't want to spent another 100€ just for cooling (import, shipping,..). Also, liquid metal is a bit too risky for me, since I also travel a bit and I'm afraid that it might leak out.
And even with high temps I hope that this laptop will last for at least 4 years, after that I guess I need to upgrade due to the hardware limitations.

There are other thermal compounds you can use other than a LM. Then are not conductive so if it accidentally gets on the MOBO you will not be SOL. That is what I personally recommend on EVERY build.

Sadly there aren't. I used MasterGel maker and still got these results. Thermalpastes go up to 16wmk, while 16wmk doesnt show a much better temperature like 12wmk.
If you know some non conductive thermalpastes above 20wmk, please let me know, I will definitely try it.

edit/ When I repasted, I saw some white staining/discoloration on the heat pipe where the old thermal paste was. Could it be that it influences the the heat transfer?

The zephyrus m is the renewed design with slightly larger dimensions and centered keyboard with the new 8th gen chip and is available with either the gtx1060 or gtx1070.

Asus also refreshed the originally gt501 with the more powerful gtx1080 max q with 8th gen cpu using the same design.

My question is why on earth would Asus not refresh the flagship 1080 max q with the same new body design.

Obviously Asus knew the original design was flawed or else they wouldn't even bothered making a new design. So why reserve the original design for their flagship model? I dont get it. The m version is suppose to be the cheaper version is it not?

yes cheaper than the GX models. beside not using Qmax gpu, the centered keyboard, normal positions mouse track, new 8th gen cpu and a bit larger batteries. thats all i know. maybe the keyboard positions has complaint and maybe they will add more powerful gpu on the G501M models.

Yes i know that already that's way I'm confused. The gx501 max q had also been upgraded to 8th gen cpu but with same old body design, non centred keyboard and smallesr battery.

My guess is that they still have enough left overs of the parts in stock. That's why they're still using it.
Alternatively, the 1080Max-q needs a different layout (which I dont think).
