I have a VERY annoying issue with my laptop. The right side (side with kensington lock) fan whines/whistles at low rpms, so during desktop use and non intensive games. At high RPMs in intensive games the whine stops or is drowned out by regular fan wind noise. The left one seems to be operating fine at all RPMs.
Heres a video: (turn up the volume).

The whine is pretty loud irl, it's all I can hear during non gaming use and it's driving me mad.
I googled the model number for the fan, but couldn't get any results.
    It's a Delta ND75C19 dc brushless fan.

I don't want to send the laptop away to the local asus service center because they're pretty awful, they'd take forever to fix it and shops don't offer returns and replacements where I live. I'd much rather replace the fan myself.
Anyone else getting similar issues with one of their fans?

Your only other option is to try and disassemble the fan and grease the bearing. I would use sewing oil or white lithium grease.

hey everyone, i have a weird problem with mine.

since the windows update last night, the keyboard hasn't been working. doesn't light up anymore either.

the touchpad + touchpad buttons still work, it has full functionality.

i checked device manager and keyboard status many times, and it says everything is running and working properly.

ALL drivers are up to date. i tried uninstalling the keyboard device and restarting the laptop. this didn't fix it.

any suggestions? external keyboards plug in and function just fine. i've also received no error messages.

The update probably reloaded whatever app you use to control the keyboard, and reset everything to default values.

Hopefully you saved a profile (if it does that), so go into that app and re-select the profile, or re-set it up again and save a profile that will survive app updates.

It's also possible, and happens all the time, a Windows update broke a driver or set up app features and you should look for a new update from Asus to fix it - I'd report it to Asus via a support ticket as soon as you find the exact problem - what app / driver stopped working after the Windows Update.

ASUS does not seem to update drivers and bios on their site very often. I am forced to use newest nvidia standard drivers on the nvidia site now, because the asus maxq drivers are not up to date any more.

Which is fine, but sometimes there are customized settings from ASUS driver provided by Nvidia then in that case you may lose these settings. However, nobody really know the differences unless there's an actual issue.

It's been that way for a long time :)

Asus only updates previous laptops support area drivers a few times, then moves on to the next new laptop, which is where to find the latest drivers, apps, and tools.

I also go to Asus's new motherboard and GPU support sections for new drivers, apps, and tools :)

Asus is pretty good about updating older laptop / motherboard firmware with fixes, those will go in the exact model they support.

Hi, somone got the same issues? Are there any fixes out now? I got the 1080 model and BIOS 201.

    • Big Distortion noises of the left speaker from mid to high volume (ASUS is aware of this)
    • Sometimes when booting the laptop my screen keeps black
    • In the Asus Gaming Center I can't see any overclocking option which are discribed on the webpage (Turbo Gear?)

You are better off without ASUS Gaming Center. It is bloatware/addware

Use MSI afterburner or NVIDIA Inspector for overclocking. The Zephurus does not have overclocakable CPU.

Tbh I don't have black screen on boot but the bios is really screwy esp with the I/o mouse for both trackpad and wired the mouse skips all over the place sometimes and it often doesn't list the left USB ports. Trackpad has issues inside windows as well.
Bios sometimes refuses to launch when pressing f2 on boot, esp when restarting
Bios wont save custom boot order.

Also can't get nvidia control panel to launch on startup or stay open in taskbar.

Also was sent the wrong extra PSU... Paid full price for extra PSU from Europe and got an old PSU that costs around $10-$40 4 weeks after I out in the order...

Hi guys, I have a quick question that's quite a departure from the technical conversation going on in this thread.

I purchased a GX501VI from Adorama a couple of days ago, and the main asus tape on top of the external packaging wasn't applied properly, so I'm a bit worried I might have received a previously returned laptop, sold as brand new (like many other horror stories on the web).

What was reassuring was that the smaller box inside was still shrink wrapped. However there was a hole on the side of the shrink wrap, not the kind of hole where it was damaged, but the kind where it looks like a part of the shrink wrap process.

I just want to ask anyone who recently purchased the GX501VI or anyone who can remember unpacking theirs, whether or not you had the same kind of gap in your shrink wrap. Thanks in advance for the help!

Did you already unpack everything? Take some pictures for your records.

If unit is clean, I wouldn't stress about it (check screws for chipped paint and slight Philips deformation). Put it through testing, and if it doesn't perform up to expectations, return it (most places give 15 days return period, no questions asked). Should also still have 1 year manufacturer warranty

Didnt notice it on mine (too excited during the unboxing) but perhaps its there to let out air during the shrink wrapping process.

I was going to make one soon. However I still havent gotten the speaker (the headphone jack works), the trackpad, wifi, or the apple app store (because of lack of a built in Ethernet port) working yet.

One of the problems with running Linux on laptops is the cooling, fan control, and temperature monitoring.

I know your unit was over temp at load, like 100c on the CPU, have you gotten that under control?

Hows it doing under load on Linux? Gaming? Benchmarks? Is there good temperature monitoring, fan control, etc?

That's the problem with getting Linux to work 100% on a laptop, all the little details :)

It can take a lot of work to dig up the drivers, forward or backward port drivers from other kernels, and dig up the configuration details for OEM hardware to get it recognized and function like it does under Windows.

Sometimes the best Linux laptops are the previous generation models, with no fancy hardware to support.

You can learn a lot by setting up a kernel build environment, get the source code for everything, and dig in over a nice quiet weekend(s). :)

@hmscott unix not straight linux :p

I didnt partition my ssd instead i used a 128gb flash drive :p so i didn't install games. For a flashdrive a <1 second boot time is pretty freaking awesome considering its mac os x.

not really an apple fan. Just did it b/c all apple fans say the os is proprietary and works best on apple devices. Wanted to show them windows hardware can run apple software better and thus all software runs better on windows hardware at the same price point. :p

Don't forget this is an apple-based campus.....

anyone know any programs to help improve battery life? any OS tweaks?

Also, my laptop GETS REALLY HOT when rendering/running Premiere Pro for some reason...

Nvidia not launching with windows and when I launch GeForce Experience and close it it does not close to taskbar but instead exits the application completely... :(
I usually use it to show FPS overlays.

Also, Latest Nvidia drivers cause black screen so don't install them.

Well getting rid of GFarce experience would be a good first step to improving battery and performance. No need for their adware on your laptop.

If you haven't already; disable Windows search and Superfetch. Neither do anything for SSD users and both are system hogs.

In power plan settings, make sure you have your minimum power state set to 5%.

You can undervolt your GPU in MSI Afterburner. Create a profile for minimum/maximum state just for battery usage.

Undervolting does not make any sense in a maxq system as msi ab does not allow to go below 0.8 but maxq operates sometimes below 0.8.

Not really good to have software "tools" for this. Most are money grabs or adware that benefit very little.

Best advice is to make every program except for Antivirus and essentials not start on startup. Best to have things like steam, chrome, Adobe, Java, Itunes, Microsoft ONEdrive and a bunch of "help" software not start until you start it yourself. Go through your startup in task manager and disable most of those things (you would be surprised how many 3rd party apps have "help" programs that start on startup)

I'm trying to read all the pages as quickly as I can to catch up. What program are you guys using for the 200/200 is gpu overclock?

Is it just msi afterburner? Rog gaming center has nothing?

Edit : OK, after reading every page in record speed.... A better question would be..

Can I run afterburner and keep rog cc or will they conflict?

    Hello everyone,

could you help me with a backlight keybord?
I bought the version with GTX1080 Max-Q and i saw one picture with the nice backlight layout colour like on the attached picture.
But i can not find this setting in ROG Aura.
How i can to set this colour layout?

    Thank you a lot.

Why would a laptop with miniDP not able to handle 4K monitor?

Of course you get less performance due to the max-Q 1080, but you should know that before buying the device.

    Hello

Yesterday i did receive my Zephyrus GX501. I downloaded WoW, Sykrim and Diablo.

Every Game that i played showed extreme ghosting! Means the picture tends to get blurry when moving. The image quality is also not sharp enough. I have set the highest possible resolution (FHD), but everything seems sluggish and slowly. G Sync is also enabled. I dont know what the problem is but it seems to be the response time of this laptop. Its bad.

Is there a way to improve this and do you have the same exerpriences??

    thx

Some people can see the "smearing" due to slower than needed response time of the display, others can't unless they see it side by side, with the "fast response" display looking "sharper".

If you can see it, you're not going to be able to "fix it" @ 120 FPS, you'll need to drop refresh / FPS to the point where the response time of the display matches the frame rate.

Try setting to 60hz / 60 FPS and see if the smearing goes away, and gives you a sharper image.

IDK what the right transition point is, somewhere between 60hz and 120hz, if you do find it, please let us know. :)

Exactly, I wonder about that too, how many people don't notice the most obvious things... it's an ongoing mystery. :)

You might do best doing your own found settings, and posting them for others here to "see" ;)
