stevedogg i really need you assistance.

my computer freezes up every morning when i open the lid.

i have set the power plan so that it never sleeps if plugged in, but in the mornings when i open it up, the desktop is momentarily displayed the mouse moves a bit and then it freezes. generally it becomes functional again after 10 minutes. but i am worried.

    any thoughts ?

    thanks

one more thing, i installed MyDefrag v4.3.1
a few weeks ago, it consolidates all the data to the outer end of the hard drive, the freezing problem has only been with me for the the last 2 weeks.

not too sure if this is the problem, or maybe it is?

That definitely sounds suspicious, but, if it happens regularly, it's easy to check: uninstall the defrag software and see if the problem goes away. Windows 7 should be continuously defragging your drive, so I don't see a need for a 3rd party solution.

For each update, you can look up the release notes (e.g. this) to see what features are added and what bugs are fixed.

Unless you are using a solid-state drive or RAID setup or something, you probably won't really notice a difference with different drivers (at least I haven't).

The latest RST version on the ASUS support site is V9.6.4.1002.

New Elantech Touchpad drivers are out. They provide smoother zooming on Firefox, but require you to push the scrolling speed up in settings or it will be slow. It also fixes back / forward in firefox beta, zooming is still broken.

Ignore the version numbers, go for the larger 7.0.5.14 as it has more features.

Also new Alcor card reader drivers

Added the Power4Gear driver. The audio driver is still the latest one that includes SRS. The card reader driver Risco posted is actually older (I did try to install that one). The newest card reader on the ASUS site is a corrupt file.

Hey. I've been trying to update my chipset driver for the past hour. I'm currently on 6.1.7600.16385 trying to update to 9.2.0.1015. I downloaded the drivers from station drivers as you posted. I execute the setup.exe, the program opens normally. The problem is that after it says it has successfully updated, when i check the driver version via device manager, nothing has changed. I noticed as i click next on the setup program, it does not seem to install. It just kind of skips the whole installation process and gives me a installed successfully page. Please help.

    Anybody tried these? Any problems?

I tried to install ATI 10.10, the installation finished normally but my laptop is using ATI 10.8! I can see this in Ati Catalist Info Center,
and I noticed that nothing has changed in Device Manager->Display Adapters, there is still the 8.762.0.0. driver version!

I installed ATI 10.11 and everything is OK for now.
I deinstalled 10.08 and cleaned the registar first, and installation went without problem!

I was wondering, what is the difference between ATI's driver and ASUS default grafich driver? Can anybody explain?!

That's what I do as well. The normal Catalyst uninstaller doesn't get rid of everything, esp. in the registry.

I'm not sure there is any difference other than labeling the card as 5730 (official ASUS) vs "5700 series" (generic ATI).

Thanks for the update; added the USB driver and firmware to the first post. I'm holding off on Touchpad, because I think the Smart Area driver is by far the best so far. Not sure what the keyboard filter does, and the MEI driver has something to do with disk management I think.

    First post updated with P4G.

I have been recently experiencing random freezes that require a hard reset. The major updates I did recently were the new RST driver and Catalyst 10.12. I tried rolling back the RST driver and got freezes still. I am now trying Catalyst 10.11. If anyone experiences freezes with either of these drivers, please post it here.

Steve, do you ever think Asus will make a newer bios?
And the connector for the backlit keyboard that doesn't have any power is annoying, why would they put it there... Anyway that's my hope, that the new bios (if one is made) supports backlit keyboard etc. :)

I was told over a month ago by tech support that they were working on a new BIOS that fixes the fan problem with 8 GB RAM. I doubt they will ever support the keyboard.

yes except for the BIOS update, but once turbogear accidentally updated his N71 with the N61 BIOS,

he was lucky, the laptop still functioned.

everything in you laptop is identical to the N61, only difference is the DVD drive the larger screen and the different BIOS.

the camera and HDD might vary as the manufacturer might use different models, but you can check that out under device management.

go to the first page http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...250-asus-n61jq-driver-thread.html#post6388295 and download the most recent release "Realtek V6.0.1.6235" this comes with the SRS Premium sound.

I cant seem to get the real video drivers to work. Everytime I install it seems to work but then the screen flicks black for a second and comes back and the resolution is set really low and the refresh rate is awful, like something is terribly wrong. It also wont detect my other monitor anymore. I end up having to roll back to the REALLY OLD asus drivers that came with the laptop.

The drivers that work are the 8.692.1.0
Can't seem to get anything else to work.

    Anyone else have this problem?

Edit: So I tried installing the slightly newer "Asus" drivers for the ATI card and even those gave me the same problem. Like I'm completely lost when even the ASUS drivers won't work.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks

That's weird I'm running 10.12 here and don't have any issues. I run an external when I'm at home, and love the auto detect.

I don't think I've had any problem with the graphics drivers yet.

If you're running the ASUS drivers then you will need to uninstall and remove the drivers before installing the AMD/ATI drivers.

To do this go to the start menu, right click on "Computer" and select manage.
Select the Device Manager, and then double click Display adapters.
Right click on the ATI Mobility driver and select properties.
Go to the Driver tab and click uninstall.
Check the "Delete the driver software for this device. and click ok.

Now you can install the ATI drivers from AMD's website. This is only necessary if you're running the ASUS Video drivers.

Thanks that worked, it gave me a problem at first but after restarting twice (not sure why I had to do that...) it fixed itself.
Not sure why I didn't think of that myself.

Oh, I have one other question, kind of driver related. My smart card reader, the little slot on the side with the plastic like slider that you put the memory card in. It just doesn't work at all. I've installed, reinstalled drivers, restarted, started the "service" it just won't work. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I suppose it could just be plain broken, but who knows.
    Any advice?

    Thanks and Happy New Year.

The slot on the side which seems to be for memory cards is an ExpressCard port. If you're trying to read a SD card use the card reader in the front of the laptop near the left of the touch pad.

Added new chipset driver and camera driver. Note that the camera driver is inverted relative to the last one I posted, so you may have to change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0000\Settings\Flip from 0 to 1 depending on how yours is installed.

Is anyone else having issues with the 10.12 ATI drivers? I've been trying to use media center to watch Live TV and all I get is a black screen and a very slow computer. All my searches point to an ATI driver issue. Also I had to disable hardware acceleration for flash in Google Chrome. I thought that issue was solved a while ago.

    Yes, supposedly:

"Chipset drivers are responsible for controlling communication between various components in your system: the processor, the video card, the hard drives, PCI devices and system memory. Keeping these drivers up to date is important - especially if you are experiencing generally sluggish system performance."

I think the RST driver has the biggest effect on new solid state drives or hybrids. Plain old magnetic drives haven't changed too much over the years, so I doubt you'll notice a difference in performance, unless you are running multiple drives in a RAID setup, which isn't really possible on the N61JQ (without removing the optical drive for another hard drive).

I was told, when I built my first computer, that the first updates should be BIOS, chipset, and graphics, since these have the strongest effect on the performance and stability of the machine. I think wireless is also pretty important to update for a laptop. Other drivers are mainly optional unless you want new features (e.g. touchpad driver) or experience specific bugs that are fixed by an update (USB 3.0 driver).
