Hi, I got me a card reader driver with no apparent card reader - at least in device manager, and My Computer, unless I'm missing something . . . which is likely. ???

The card reader can be found in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers section.

Most probably you also have Alcor Micro USB 2.0 card reader like most of us.
The driver for the Alcor Card reader is on the first page of this thread.

Thanks, turbogear. I'll track it down.

Downloading video driver Catalyst 10.10 (latest on page one of this thread) didn't go well at all and I had to roll back. Probably my own fault for correcting a problem that didn't exist. But once you get started . . . I'm sure you guys know how it is!

It was a weird double-load of a driver; it sounds crazy, but I think another driver intercepted the installation, cause there were two installations and two Finish buttons. That was followed by descent into VGA mode. And the driver that showed up in device manager was in the 8s not the 10s. Nasty! Thank goodness for the rollback feature.

I'll probably give it another go when I have enough brain space to deal with potential bad behavior. Anyone know a way to erase the previous bad driver and ATI stuff, which was a 100 MB installation?

    Hey Guys,

I´m trying to make a "driver pack" with the essential stuff (no bloatware) and I need your opinion. This is what I got so far:

    http://img833.imageshack.us/i/drivers.png/
    [IMG]

    01 Chipset - Intel/Majorgeeks website
    02 VGA - ATI website
    03 Audio - Realtek website
    04 Wireless - laptopvideo2go website
    05 Lan - Atheros website
    06 - 17 - Asus website

Did I miss something? Is there anything that I should change? Thank you!

Does anyone know if the latest Atheros drivers support monitor mode (also known as promiscuous)? If not, where I might be able to find a driver that does?

Number 11 is also not essential! One process in the task manager less... ;)
The list is good, when I format and do a clean install (I got my laptop without OS, so I installed everything there is to install, just to try things out) I will install
only the drivers you have mentioned! Without number 11 as I said... :)

    P.S.
To all of you who are using ATI 10.10, is it good?
Does it boost graphic performance, is it stable?

This particular item is not exactly a driver that is need for the operation of the notebook, but it is the sidebar gadget that displays when the turbo boost is active.

Here is the link to it from intel website: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-031038.htm

The monitor is the sidebar gadget. The driver is actually a graphics driver for Intel processors with integrated GPUs (e.g. those present on notebooks with switchable graphics). The Core i7 720QM in the N61JQ does not have an integrated GPU, therefore the "turbo boost driver" is unnecessary and won't install even if you try. Don't ask why it is called "turbo boost driver", when actually it is graphics drivers .

Hey, I seem to be having an issue with CCC version 10 as well.

I can get to the screen where it says install and uninstall, but either option does nothing; it looks like its about to do something, but nothing shows up.

    Any help?

Are you trying to install the software suite from this page? Or the OpenCL version I posted in the thread (not the first post)? The OpenCL version may not install properly if you haven't installed the regular one first; I found that out after doing a complete driver cleaning and trying to re-install the OpenCL driver. Personally, I wouldn't bother with OpenCL since nothing really uses it.

I don't think so, but I tried your link anyway, and the same thing happened. No luck.

In fact, windows told me itself that it did not install correctly. It said that it applied compatibility settings, but that didn't do anything either.

Strange. I assume you have tried to manually uninstall the previous ATI driver first. You might try running a tool like this ("ATI - Display" option) to clean up the old files before running the new installer. That would be my guess as to why it's not installing (previous driver issue, probably the Catalyst Install Utility or something). I can't vouch for Driver Sweeper since I use DriverCleaner.NET (not free), but I'm sure it works just as well.

Hello again, stevedogg thanks again... ;)

Ok, I have to ask again about these drivers, I own N71jq and all these drivers are the same for N61 and N71 and can be used on both laptops, except for BIOS right?

I just discovered that my CPU is working with 1 core only, and that has happened after flashing my BIOS to v208 probably.
I thought that a newer version is available for N71, but I see now that v210&v212 are for N61 only. :(
I don't know what to do now, do I downgrade to a lower version or what...

All the drivers here can be used on N71JQ.

I doubt that the problem you are having is due to bios v208.
Me and many other users I know are using bios v208 and non of them reported any such problem, but you can downgrade the bios to v207 and see if this problem disappears.

Did you reset the bios to default factory setting after you flashed it to v208?

I descended into VGA mode too . . . I learned the hard way not to mess with perfectly working drivers. I also learned there are just too many drivers available for ATI 5730, confusing the issue in a big way.

After some finagling around, I've had good luck going back to the video driver from the ASUS list, dated 1/22/2010 version 8.692.1.0. I should say I'm not a gamer, so whatever gaming innovations ATI/AMD have added since then are meaningless to me - but that may not be the case for you.

However, if you want a driver that presents images real well and runs DVDs great, on both the laptop screen and on an added external monitor, that's been the best one for me.

I also personally have felt no loss from not running the latest CCC center. I'm running a version 2009, which I assume is a year old. Unfortunately, this thread has not explained the relationship between CCC Center and the driver; not that it necessarily "should have." The thread is about presenting the latest drivers. However, there is plenty of confusion between the control center and the drivers. I was particularly perplexed by a "double installation" which tried to install the latest CCC and driver, and wound up where you wound up, in VGA hell.

My process, which I'm not sure you can duplicate, was to 1) revert back to the old driver; however . . . 2) while it got out of VGA mode, it wasn't "right."
    3) Then I reinstalled the 1/22/2010 driver which worked in the beginning. It didn't look quite right either. But after a little while, a dialog popped up saying "reinstalling font cache" and all was well with the world. Like I said, hard to reproduce that methodology!

Also, another area of confusion for newbies to watch out for is that the dates of the driver listed before you download them are often not the same dates you see in device manager once they're loaded! This hasn't been mentioned either.

So I would reiterate, unless there's something very specific you're trying to accomplish with the latest driver, and your system looks fine and works fine, the video driver is one you may want to leave well enough alone.

I added the new link. The package contains drivers for XP, Vista, and 7. I'm not sure why it's labeled 46, but they're always like that (the driver version is 10 lower for some reason).

How to install new ATI Catalyst 10.10? Do I uninstall 10.08 or just run the 10.10 installer?
Also, how is 10.10 working and is there any difference in performance with 10.10? Good or bad, is there any difference...? ;)

My card reader is not showing up, either. It's physically there, but it is not detected. I DLed the driver, but still no sign of the device or my pictures. Looked in USB devices in device manager - just generic info, not the device or the driver.

If the flash drive is not defective, then it should be able to read sdhc cards.
In my N71JQ which uses the same card reader as N61JQ, I am able to read sdhc cards without problems.
I am using a Sandisk Ultra II SDHC 16GB card for my data backup and I never had any problems with it.

It won't show up in Device Manager unless something is plugged into the slot. Are you sure you're plugging into the right slot (just below the touchpad, slightly left)? With the driver in this thread, it should show up under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as "Alcor Micro USB 2.0 Card Reader".

I routinely read Micro SDHC cards (up to 8 GB). I use a Kingston Micro SD adapter like this.

Bingo - I was using the Express Card Slot - into which a card fits perfectly into the adapter . . . lol . . . ! Great catch, thanks.

So now I see my photos. What I don't see is an entry for Alcor Card Reader in Device Manager. I'm not sure how exotic a card reader can get. Is there a reason to worry about a newer driver?

Later . . . well, I went ahead and installed. All is good. Alcor shows up, at least with a card in the slot. Let's see what happens when I take it out . . . it disappears . . . and when I put it back in . . . uh oh - "device software was not installed properly." But now Alcor's back! Do we see pictures? Yes. OK.

Taking out card again. . . gone from device manager . . . card back in again . . . back in Device Manager . . . no error message.

I tried it today, the boot time is the same after second boot +- but the transfer rate is crazy and better than old driver. I think windows 7 is more efficient with this brand new driver and SSD or Hybrid drive - I have nothing negative to report for now.
