Hum.. I thought that N61JQ had space for another HDD like N61Vn has, since they are so similar (N61Vn comes with two 250GB HDDs by default, in my opinion worse than just 1 of 500GB because of the weight)

The BIOS I update, USB 3.0 never gave me problems so I didn't update the firmware, I always get one step behind if things work well.
It's a shame that ASUS don't add a changelog with the drivers, that might give me motivation to update some drivers, I don't like to make updates blindly.

No space AFAIK. Speaking of USB 3.0, I have not experienced a random freeze since reverting my firmware to 3.0.2.5, but it could just be a fluke. If anyone experiences similar freezes (that require a hard reset), you might try reverting the firmware (download the DOS version of 3.0.2.5 here and run the fwupdate.bat file in an elevated command prompt).

Hello everyone. Hopefully someone here has experienced the same problem as me or might be able to help me fix it. I posted on another forum a while back that details my problem pretty well. Here is the link to that if anyone wants to read it but I will also briefly describe it here. N61JQ Video Problem - Screen goes black or freezes - XOTICPC Forums

Basically nowadays my computer freezes or locks up when I try and play MPEG movies, youtube videos, or flash videos. Probably more than that but those are the only ones I've really tried. AVI, WMV, MP4 all work fine. Sometimes when I try and view certain things the computer locks up and makes horrendous noises. It can also be noted that when trying to refresh the windows experience index it hangs on Tune Windows Media Decoding.

I've tried updating drivers and BIOS and this and that with no luck. I stumbled across this thread yesterday so I decided to wipe the computer, flash the BIOS at boot, and reinstall everything with drivers from this page. Everything worked great until I got to the video drivers.

I wanted to go with the Asus package so I downloaded ATI V8.760.0.0 and also ATI Catalyst 10.12 in case the Asus one didn't work. Mind you, when following the link to the asus download page, there are in fact two ATI V8.760.0.0 choices. One being a 2010/10/19 update and the other being a 2010/09/15 update.

I tried installing both of these and the same thing happened. It appeared to install the HDMI drivers but I got nothing for the display adapter. It still shows Standard VGA Graphics Adapter in the device manager. I tried right clicking and selecting update driver and picking the folder where the ATI files were extracted but it just comes back up with the Standard VGA graphics adapter. Before and after this installation I ran the windows experience index and it did not hang where it did prior to the fresh install of windows.

So on to try the Catalyst installation to see if I can get drivers. When I run the installation right away I notice it's actually installing drivers. I'm thinking it might actually work and be fine. After it installs with no errors or hiccups I look in the device manager and it says ATI Radeon 5700 series so I know it installed some drivers. So my first test is the windows experience index and right away it fails and hangs at the same spot it did before. As of writing this post I just reverted back to the standard VGA drivers because I am expecting everything else to fail in the same way and I'll be back to square one.

If anyone has any suggestions or knows why there isn't actually any display drivers in the ASUS ATI package please help me out.. I'm pulling my hair out! Thank you for taking the time to read this!

You didn't update your laptop (N61JA-A1) with the N61JQ BIOS linked in this thread, did you? The latest BIOS for your model is V211 here. I think the BIOS update also updates the vBIOS, so it could affect video. What vBIOS version do you get when you run GPU-Z ( download)? For reference, I have 012.020.000.023.034814 on my N61JQ running BIOS V210. You may try an earlier BIOS to see if it fixes your crashes (e.g. V209 here).

steve, I have BIOS 210 too, is there a reason why didn't you update to the most recent 212?
Oh and here is the BIOS changelog, I hopped that you could add it to the official topic with a SPOILER button (only shows information when clicked, to keep things organized) but I can't find something like it, only a CODE button. Wow I never even noticed that typo in my original thread from last year. I do infact have a N61J Q-A1 so yes, I did update it with the drivers from this page. I just ran GPU-Z and I get 012.020.000.023.034814 which after scrolling back up I'm seeing is the same thing you have. As far as going back to an earlier version, as far as I can remember I don't think I actually flashed the BIOS until after I was having an issue so therefor I would be flashing to a version previous to the one installed when I bought the laptop.

As far as the video drivers go that are posted on the page.. Any idea why when I try installing the Asus ones (anything after 8.692.1.0 which worked fine) I only get Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and not the 5730?

    Thanks for the replies!

Hmm it's possible that the ASUS-specific graphics driver I linked does not have the specific hardware ID of the 5730 in the N61JQ in the list (the hardware ID is what drivers use to identify your hardware, install the proper driver and settings, and sets the description in device manager). I'm not sure which is the last ASUS-specific driver I tested, but I think I posted about it in this thread (it was back when I was having BSOD issues related to flash videos). You might try another version from the VGA category of the ASUS site, e.g. V8.783.2.2000 here. The latest official driver is V8.692.1.0 here, which you say worked fine.

I have been using generic ATI drivers without problems. I have 10.12 and tried the WEI test and got no crash. I'm not sure what the problem is, especially since you've wiped the system and re-installed. When you re-installed, you didn't install any codec packs or anything like that did you?

Cool; added it. The reason I downgraded back to 210 was a fan speed issue with 8GB RAM. ASUS tech support acknowledged the problem and said a new BIOS was in the works, but that was months ago.

"fan speed issue with 8GB RAM", can you clarify this? what about 212, do you think it improves something? Changelog is a little cryptic about what 212 does. thanks ;)
EDIT: please copy my format of the changelog, it's more readable (you can quote my post, see the code and just copy it)
oh and no need to thank me in the topic, it doesn't matter to me, you can remove my "thank you's" if you want to keep the topic more clean.
I don't need any reward for updating the drivers, I just like your topic, it's very organized and I like to help you keeping it updated, because it is a little time-consumming for just 1 person ;)

Before I did the first wipe & re-install I had tried the V8.783.2.2000 and another one or two. One of them did give me a 5730 driver in device manager but failed to fix the problem and that's when I decided to wipe and re-install. The video drivers were about the third set of drivers installed and it didn't get fixed so I wiped and re-installed again with the V8.692.1.0 drivers being the second set of drivers to be installed (after the chipset). My first test was just to run the windows experience index test and it hung at the same spot (where it did not hang right before installing the video drivers). I haven't installed codecs during any install. I really think I just have some bad hardware.

I don't remember if the chipset drivers required a reboot but definitely after installing the video drivers when the computer would go to restart it would just sit at a black screen and wouldn't restart. This problem persisted after I installed each set of drivers. After running windows update and trying to actually shut the computer down for the night (I usually keep it on) I get this nice BSOD at shut-down "driver_power_state_failure". When I checked the dump file with an analyzer program it was for a windows\system32 exe. I don't remember the file name off the top of my head because I'm at work now.

Anyways I appreciate the responses. Like I said I'm thinking I just have some bad hardware and I'm gonna start the RMA process. If anyone has any miracle ideas or solutions though I'm all ears. Thanks!

Note1: There are two Azurewave Camera Driver V5.8.55133.208 on ASUS download site:
    Camera_Azurewave_AW2S005_Z5855133208.zip
    Camera_Azurewave_VS010_Win7_64_Z5855133208.zip
They have the same size (3,76MB) and although global CRC differs, individual files inside .zip have the same CRC, so the drivers are exactly the same.

Oh and stevedogg please read my previous post ;)

Hmm 208 seemed to work ok when I tested it quickly with Gmail video chat, but I'll test further at home. The fan speed issue is that the fan runs at 100% speed for a short time (30 seconds to a minute) after powering up from shutdown or resuming from hibernate.

No need for you to test, I've tested all of them and found the problem: there's nothing wrong with the drivers, but with virtualdub (the program I was using to test them): it defaulted the fps of the new drivers to 5fps... I changed to 30fps, runs perfect, so these drivers are OK! =D

stevedogg, please read the end of this post (the bold part) ;)

I'm wary of new webcam drivers, but if Marco says they're alright, I'll give'em a try.. :)

Edit: After the update (I'm running 208), the webcam seems to be running fine. I can't get virtual camera up and running, but with the resolution set to 320x240 in Skype, it runs fine. Clicking camera settings in Skype still crashes Skype though, which I think is a driver issue. Funny enough the date on the driver is 10/9/2010

I'm using elantech V7.0.5.12, I think it's the most recent one, at least by stevedogg. There's another driver Elantech V8.0.7.0 that should be more recent than the previous, but doesn't have smart area and it's buggy (again, by stevedogg)
Try it and say something, I will check it too now

    EDIT:
DriverVer=12/14/2010, 8.0.5.0 (-Smart Area, -edge scrolling)
DriverVer=08/09/2010, 8.0.7.0 (-magnify option, -Smart Area, +edge scrolling)
    DriverVer=07/21/2010, 7.0.5.12 (+Smart Area)

It seems that in 8.x.x.x, build numbers are inverted in relation to dates, the higher the build, the older the driver hahaha
EDIT2: Tried them (8.0.5.0), they work well, there's no Smart Area or edge scrolling but I don't use those features, so I'm gonna stay with these.

yes, I didn't try those versions, don't know about them :/
    There's also 7.0.6.x and 7.0.7.x in station-drivers, specifically:
    Version 7.0.7.0
    Version 7.0.6.4
    Version 7.0.6.2
That were never tested or commented here.

Feel free to download and try them and don't forget to post about, or if you just want to see the date of the driver, check the beginning of the file ETD.inf inside it ;)

can someone tell me if with Webcam V5.8.55133.208 there's a process named vsnp2uvc.exe running with the OS?
Or if you have that file in C:\Windows\

I have, in the properties it says it's "Camera Monitor" and from "Sonix Technology", but I'm a little paranoid because it starts with the system. Virustotal 0/0 but still...

Yes, I have that process also.

I tried Elan 8.0.5.0 and manually enabling SmartArea in the registry, but, like 8.0.7.0, it doesn't stick. Reverted back to the one on the front page; I think it is still the best.

don't worry, it's the intention that matters.
ASUS should be more descriptive about driver names and dates, ex. sometimes they release P4G v1.1.41 and then some days later, v1.1.40..
Realtek drivers never say what they bring inside..
    Changelogs would be useful too.

I'm also using elantech V7.0.5.12 seeing how the V8.x.x.x drivers have gone backwards by disabling features that the V7.x.x.x drivers use. I use magnify and edge scrolling a lot. So it would be pointless for me to go to the V8.x.x.x drivers seeing how those features are disabled.

I found the following features hidden in the Elantech 8.0.5.0 driver:
    Feature (Registry_key_name)
    • Cover Management (Cover_Display)
    • Edge Scroll (EdgeScroll_Display)
    • Iluminated TouchPad (Light_Display) - Unavailable on N61JQ
    • Momentum (Momentum_Display)
    • Rock Switch (RockSwitch1_Display/RockSwitch2_Display) - Unavailable on N61JQ
    • Smart Area (SmartArea_Display)
    • Smart Motion (SmartMotion_Display)
    • Sensitivity (STV_Display)

To have them show in ELAN application (Smart Pad), go to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPadDisplay\
and change from 0 (hide) to 1 (show) the respective key (ELAN application must NOT be oppened (it can stay in system tray though, it's the ELAN Smart Pad application that must be closed) ).
For actually enabling the feature, I still don't know, once it's shown in ELAN Smart Pad, I try to disable/enable it but without effect, maybe some key in the registry is blocking these new features. Hope u guys help finding how to enable this cool features =D

I am new to this thread and just got a n61jq-x1. The optical drive that is listed in my device manager is mata dvd-ram uj890as. I tried burning some data from windows explorer to a dvd and the system said I need to update to the latest firmware and would not burn the dvd. The firmware I saw listed at the beginning was not for this model drive. Anybody else have this drive in their machine?

Anybody know where to find a compatible firmware update for windows 7 ultimate 64 bit?

I found a problem with these drivers. Once I installed them I could no longer run the Windows Experience Index benchmark. It fails with the message "Could not measure video playback performance."

Is anyone else having this issue?

Just ran one without any problems (scores are still 6.7 though). The only video-related setting I changed after my clean install was turning of dynamic contrast.

Are you using any third party codecs? I'm worried this is another video card issue with this laptop. I tested some older DX9 games (Half Life, Guild Wars) and it locks up from time to time and then recovers. I'm in the process of trying various previous drivers. Some work rendering mpeg2 (which is why the WEI is failing) but they crash for other reasons.

Are there any good diag tools for video cards? I really don't want to have to send this laptop in for a 3rd time.

I don't use any third-party codecs. I haven't played games on this laptop really, so I'm not sure if I would have similar problems.

No it appears to be a hardware problem. I've tried just about every driver I can think of and I'm still having issues. I guess I haven't played any games since I got the laptop back from the last repair. I first noticed it with video, but when I play any game it freezes or blue screens within 5 minutes.

Hopefully I'll get a callback on Monday from a Supervisor. This would be the third time I've had video card issues with this laptop. I'll be honest I'm a little mad at the moment. In less than a year I have way to many issues with this laptop.

I bought this laptop so I'd have something reliable for school and that hasn't worked out like I'd hoped.

Well I sent it to the repair facility and the supervisor made it a high priority. Got it back in less than a week. However, nothing was done to it. They never even contacted me letting me know they couldn't find anything wrong. When I got it back games still crash or lock up. It couldn't even play MPEG2 or M4V video files with windows media player and it couldn't even successfully run the WEI. So basically nothing happened.

It looks like they just ran their standard tests and when it passed they returned it. Didn't even read what I wrote. If anyone is having similar issues you might have a bad video card.

I've left another message for a supervisor to get back to me, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to contact the Better Business Bureau to get this resolved.

Do you know if it went to the Indiana facility (with shoddy workmanship) or the California one? You might specifically ask for the California one if you didn't get it.

I don't know if I would buy ASUS again; my laptop has been ok other than some quirks with the LAN card magically reinstalling itself in device manager (and some annoying bluetooth issues that led me to buy a logitech nano mouse), but the service process just seems so cumbersome, and a lot of people are having hardware issues. I had one problem with my old Dell laptop before this, and it was solved over the phone and the part shipped to me so I had 0 downtime (I just had to ship the old one back in the packaging they provided). It cost me 0 to fix the problem.

I live in California so it's gone to the Fremont facility once (which seemed to fix it) But the last two times it's gone to the Milpitas.

Years ago I bought a dell before as well and I never had an issue with it for 7 years. In fact before I bought ASUS I had never had a computer die on me before.

Sorry for taking this thread off track. Based on the symptoms I originally thought it was a driver problem. But none of the drivers completely fix the problem.

Anyone know which drivers to download for the sound buttons (Mute, Decrease, and Increase) on top to work?

Odd thing is, when I click Fn+F10 (for mute), it doesn't work either. Is this faulty audio driver or hotkey button?

    Thanks for the help.

    Hello all,

About the last Intel Rapid Storage Technology V10.1.2.1004 drivers I have many system freeze when I use it with Momentus XT Hard Drive ...

The system stay cool but some errors occur when I working hard on network and system freeze

For me 10.1.0.1008 is more stable but the best stable drivers is the very old drivers

I.m not sure but I suspect my Hybrid Momentus Xt hard drive for this freezing... with this drivers it come unstable when some error occur.

I would like to know if you already experiencing something like that and if you have any solution..

    thanks

PS: I do not have any special event in system event excepted "system shutdown was not planned..." and "event audit was ignored..."

***************I did a firmware SD24 upgrade, the trouble is done. I hope... Its shame, this drive is shame.
