Yes, it is kind of fun to see what has been updated (even though I don't know what 99% of these updates actually do) :D. I have a bookmark folder that I open all at once so I can skim real quick to see what's new (many thanks to Station Drivers for a lot of these).

    BTW: new WLAN driver!

I just bugged them again about the fan issue late last month. I figured it would be more of the same: "Hi, we apologize for the delay response, we have just received your mail due to mail system errors. May I ask whether your problem has been solved?"

Could it be that they are actually fixing this problem?

Edit: Also, what's up with the date on that driver? 10/30/09 is the date for V204. I hope they aren't hacking together an old BIOS with a new vBIOS to quell the fan issue.

Turn the computer off, pull off the panel on the bottom, and blow into the exhaust vent to clear out the vent.

I fixed it, but in the future, click one of the 5 links directly above the "Software" section of the 1st post and find the update. Sometimes the links change, and those take you to the right Station Drivers pages to find the drivers.

anyone notice a change in USB3 performance/stability after updating? I'm hesitant to update if it's a crappy release.

I only have one USB 3.0 device (external HD), and I haven't noticed any changes with the updates. It may have been a coincidence, but I was getting system freezes (requiring hard reboot) after upgrading the firmware to 3.0.2.7, so I rolled it back and decided not to post the firmware upgrades unless there is a significant change in the changelog.

How did you roll back the firmware ?
as far as I know, it's not possible to downgrade NEC firmware

Has anyone on N61Jq removed their DVD drive and instead installed a caddy to isntall a hard disk in the caddy?

If yes, then is this the right caddy to install:

New SATA 2nd HDD caddy for 12.7mm Universal CD/DVD-ROM | eBay

The caddy has SATA to connect the hard disk and SATA to connect to the laptop.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Best regards,

stevedogg, i really need your advice. i plan to update my BIOS for the first time from 206 - 212

i read through your post on flashing through the BIOS. but you mentioned using a "(a very slow thumb drive/MP3 player)", what does that mean.

and i have read that one should avoid using the USB 3.0 port. but to be honest i dont trust any of my ports. my usb 3 port has a loose connection. i also dont trust my pendrive and i do not know what you mean when you say, use a very slow pen-drive?

i have a 4gb and an 8gb pendrive. the 8gb pendrive in my experience is more stable. but i hear its best to use a 4gb drive.

    in this post, http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...asus-n61jq-owners-lounge-462.html#post6336225

King of Rapture suggests flashing the bios through the operating system with the Windows BIOS Flash Utility

    i have a really stable windows 7
    in your post:
    8) When flashing completes, Easy Flash will tell you the laptop needs to shut down (I think you have to press enter when it says this)

i remember reading a few posts those who were attempting to flash were unsure if they were supposed to press enter or let it reboot. you are unclear in step 8.

i just replaced the stock 2x2 DDR3 with 2x 4DDR3, its strange that now the system fan runs at 100% just as the system boots. you said that it does this after flashing to 212 ? i haven't flashed yet, still at 206

Regarding the fan issue, all I know is that it happens with 212 and not 210.

    King of Rapture,

I installed a similar caddy on the DVD slot, and it works perfectly.
My caddy looks exactly the same, except with some stickers on it, like here :
    SATA 2nd HDD Caddy IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T60 T61 R60 R61 | eBay
The color looks like aluminium, but It's all plastic :)

My main hdd is now Seagate 750GB 7200rpm (9.5mm), and the original 320GB is now in the caddy. Been using for 6 months without a problem. The caddy for N61JQ is SATA & 12.7mm height. The one you showed should work for you for the regular 9.5mm 2.5 HDD , or the 12.5mm 2.5 HDD.

It has a strong blue Led and it will look a little depressed (3mm) than your standard DVD drive. Not a problem, barely noticeable though. I bought it for $12. Nothing beats that price compared to Newmodeus caddy who charge you $45.
