-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Its a utility which allows you to make phone calls through the modem or through a program such as skype.
-
So can anybody provide a direct link to the newer version of Turbogear? I found this http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
which states that its version 1.01.01, but the version on the drivers CD is telling me that it is version 1.00.01 and when I downlaoded the one from the ASUS website, I checked the version info and it still says 1.00.01. Also, I had to download through the global link since the USA one did not work for me. -

Try it again. Not sure what you meant but yeah the one on the driver cd should say 1.00.01 since thats the older version. -
what are the latest gpu drivers for xp that can be overclocked using rivatuner?
Also do you recommend flashing v502 bios or waiting for Asus to officially release new bios? -
-
with the 704 does everything work?
-
Actually youll have to try and find out some people report 502 working flawlessly but others (me included) can only work on 704 maybe next bios update will work for everybody?

Im staying with the stock bios when I get mine back I didnt notice any differences between all 3 bios and this time I shall follow the age old advice "if it aint broke, dont fix it"
I only did the bios changes last time for the sake of my review and to try to fix some problems. -
yes my stock bios everything works fine except the stock bios clocks ram at 333 and undervolt cpu and even overclock mode it doesnt run effectively at 2.9mhz for me, but cpu-z reports it at like 1.9mhz or something. At work so just going by what I remember.
Anyone know what latest gpu drivers for xp that allow overclocking? I am only averaging around 3k ish with 165.01 or 163.16
I would like to oc and have a 3dmark06 score around 3.5k constantly -

look in the "c90s review" thread for my hybrid drivers

I am now a proud owner of a C90S.
-
Hmm, I don't have that problem on mine. This is my first laptop, but it seems smooth. I have more of an issue with the pressure required to press the mouse buttons, it seems inconsistant. The scroll wheel to the right of the pad works flawless and the fingerprint reader requires quite a bit of pressure but works wonderfully.
I need to know, has anyone gotten Ubuntu up on their C90 yet? Also does anyone know how to access the bios/select boot device? Thanks!
Edit: congrats troy -
-
To access bios/boot device, usually you have to hit a key during startup, depends on the manufacturer. Not sure what ASUS uses but its usually either tab, delete, f11, or f8. -
i belive silenthero is on ubuntu too, thing is some people on vista report no issues at all...
-
On the ASUS splash screen, escape = choose boot device, figured that out. Delete is not the key, tested that, don't have my C90 in front of me. Will test more later. I hope it's not locked, but I will use hirens to force unlock the BIOS if it is. -
I have gusty installed, and everything works on it
-
Just thought I would add that Patriot brand RAM works flawlessly (I have 2+1GB from newegg).

I just thought I would add, that Gskill, Corsair, and OCZ all 3 did not work for me with a 2gb stick. I have the worst luck ever when it comes to the C90 and ram. So looks like I am forced to use 2gb with my system.

Hey guys! I'm a c90 owner!! WOOOOOOT!!! This laptop is freaking amazing.

Hi C90s Owners,
I am considering the C90s. I was looking at G1s but I'd like to get a system with Vista AND XP Pro dual boot (although maybe it makes more sense to have XP run virtual in Vista for times when I need XP - still reading up about that...) and I called a reseller and he pointed me to a couple of different Asus based notebooks he could build up.
Because I want an HDMI ouput he recommended the C90s. Learning that it uses a desktop CPU I asked him how is the power consumption and he said it is about the same as a G1s. He said that early C90s had a problem with heat and power consumption but they fixed it with a change to the BIOS.
So I came to the forums and started reading about the C90s. I read or browsed all 570 of the posts on this thread. At the beginning of this thread there is a lot of talk about very hot temps. I don't see where this was resolved but nobody near the end seems to be talking about how hot the thing is anymore. Is this the problem that the computer had and has it been fixed since the beginning of July, six or seven weeks ago? -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
bsically on standard mode and above it gets hot enough that you can't put it on your lap unless you are wearing jeans. Heat mostly everyones left palm rest gets hot because the hard drive is there but mine its comfortably hot it does not scorch me. There is no real issues besides that when its on a desk or whatver everything is fine.

1) When the system originally came out people were reviewing/benchmarking them and noted that they were warm, and that got constrewed by people who didn't have the systems as the systems being "hot". As more people got C90 systems it was reinforced that the systems were warm as opposed to hot.
2) People started expecting them to be warm after reading the reviews, so they knew what they were getting into owning the systems, so they just accept that it is going to be on the warm side.
3) When the system first came out it was being tested a lot in gaming and overclocked modes, which run warmer. Most of the time there isn't a reason to be running in gaming and overclock mode, so the system will not heat up as much.
4) Alex found out that his hard drive was hot because it was constantly being accessed by SuperFetch. If you disable SuperFetch, or let it run its course then hard drive access will decrease, and the hard drive will not heat up as much.
5) Finally the fans kick in pretty quickly to cool the system down and push the hot air out, so unless your taxing the system with something like heavy gaming it will not remain hot for long.
Thats my take on why you don't see as many posts about the system getting hot compared to when it was first released. -

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Wouldnt be able to tell you. All I know is that the gpu is cooler then the g1s. Mines peaks around 86 under intense load while the g1s gpu goes to the 90s. Though it is clocked higher but it is a gddr3. Regardless I can't compare it to the overall heat output.

I just wanted to quickly post that I got my email saying that my order has been shipped out!!! I'm so excited!!!

"bsically on standard mode and above it gets hot enough that you can't put it on your lap unless you are wearing jeans"
Dude, come on what are you doing, benchmarking it in your lap without any pants on? I spent over an hour on standard this morning alone, in shorts, and I didn't even notice the heat. You make it sound like it's going to sterilize you. The only part of the C90S that I've found to be unbearably hot is the little metal ASUS sticker under the screen.
The g1s should be a little cooler, but I really wouldn't put to much into heat between these two. The big thing you should be weighing is future upgradeability of the GPU (and the CPU w/ the 2.9ghz mark in mind) of the C90S vs the more mobile and graphically faster (is DDR3 really worth an extra $300?) and currently better gaming machine in the G1S. -
Anyone know the current wait times for GenTechPC on the C90S? I just want to grab the laptop with the processor and wireless card, and get the rest separately.

Do yourself a favor and atleast get the ram from gentech, the cpu is less of a risk and the hdd is no risk at all, but with the c90's ram compatability issues you really dont want to take the risk of buying your own. -

You have to get the CPU to get the warranty.

As I try to figure out which of the two to buy for my first notebook: It's still unclear to me whether the C90s runs hotter or cooler than the G1s. It sounds like about the same. I guess the next question is about the upgradeability of the C90s... If the components do run pretty hot what happens next year when new even faster CPUs and GPUs come out. Isn't there a good chance that they will be running even hotter to get the speeds? -- Maybe in five more years there will be different transistor technology that runs faster and cooler but I haven't heard anything about newer cooler faster technologies coming very soon.
So doesn't that sort of negate the upgrade benefits of the C90? If the notebook is already pretty warm wouldn't it be problematic to add even hotter stuff inside? I guess the fans are there to help but they will have to be running all the time, which must be mildly noisy - although some people think it's not too bad. Not arguing either way but just throwing this out there for discussion. Would you owners put a hotter CPU or GPU in your C90s? -
Nvidia's 9600, which is to be released later this year for desktops (around Thanksgiving/Christmas time I heard), uses this 45nm process and nvidia claims it to be twice as fast as the 8800. I'm assuming the notebook version of this card will be out shortly after. -
Hey guys, I've got a slight issue going on with my C90. It has to deal with the fingerprint reader program. It keeps using a rediculous amount of memory on my computer (currently 1,380,000k!!!!)!! That's more than half of my RAM (i have 2 gigs)!!! This cannot be normal, and I tried reinstalling everything (complete reformat) and it still does it. Anyone else have this problem? The process name is psq|tray.exe and in the description it says it's the Fingerprint Try Application.
Edit: Oh and yes I know I can just end it, but I'd like to know if there's a way to prevent it. -
Not sure Sam. I'll check it when I get home.
Couple things:
I know people are having problems with the Battery/unplugged modes. When I unplug the laptop, I have to shutdown and restart before I can log into the net. How do I get around this? Bios issue?
Has anyone found a good bag/sleeve to use with this beast? I've tried all the bags I have, and none of them are big enough. A sleeve would be amazing for th is. -
i know it sounds like a hassle but it works and my c90 is secured between sponges while i carry it around. -
is this what you mean? -
-
guess there is something wrong with yours. -
-
THe program does the same thing on mine. I jus close it since i never use the reader except for logging in
