Hello all, first post. I have been reading here for weeks though. Finally ordered my ASUS c90s last week. Hopefully I get it 7 or 8 days. Anyway...
Does anyone have any game benchmarks at 1280x1024. I really don't need the laptop to run at the c90s max res. I am not happy below 30 fps, and im not really happy AT 30 fps... so if I can't get this thing to run games above 30 fps I will be a tad annoyed. I dont know why everyone insists on maxing out their resolution, most games look great 1280x1024...but thats just me. -
-
I just cant believe that my 2 and a half year old computer, with a 4200 amd and bfg 7800 is still better... i mean, im about to buy a brand new desktop this christmas, i was hoping to make a laptop that could atleast play unreal 3, and hellgate london.

Hello everybody. I am going to purchase a C90 also. I asked OCZ about their new DDR2 800 sticks. I wanted to know if a 1gb and a 2gb set of sticks would run in Dual Channel, or would I have to stick with a 2x1gb set. Here is the link:
http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30258
The memory is available at Newegg at very reasonable prices! -
It only supports DDR2 667 so they won't run at 800 but at 667.
And to get dual channel I think all the sticks need to be same speed/same size
@MX_RVR: That's because it has a 128bit bus so it gets killed in higher than 1680x1050. In a a res such as 1280x1024 the 8600GTS is between the 7900GS and the 7950GT and the GT is about the 7800GT -
"The latest theory is that the 667 memory is automatically being overclocked to 800"
This would explain why a lot of memory won't work(even different sticks of the same brand and speed)-just like CPU's and GPU's, some will overclock better than others. Since the specs (5-5-5-15) are the same as the 667 sticks, you won't lose any performance but you will gain the extra "headroom" when you use the 20% overcloking, hopefully giving you better stability!
Normally going with a higher speed memory also unfortunately gives you higher latencies. So these (2x1gb dual channel kit) sticks look like they are going to be the hot setup and a win/win situation. -
mine showed up and vista is cool i wonder if there are greater administrator gui interfaces
-
how do you get the volume higher it is way low; do i need a sound card?
-
FN and F12 does it for me. These are loud speakers compared to a 12" powerbooks, which is great.
-
there must be another program or device i could use including a soundcardthat wil amplify the volume it is only good with headphones.
-
yah it is very low for me too, i think its just low sound, sadly

Mine is pretty loud, it must depend on your source and software alot.
I use half volume for listening to music, but if I que up some of my movies its loud at the 10% mark.
Maybe look into a software preamp? It will probably kill sound quality tho. -
i found a slight solution by adjusting a preference in the out put setting...
sounds a lil louder. -
HI Peoples...I'm new so please overlook any screwups ok lol. Have been looking at the c90s for sometime now and was wondering if this was good price: $1915

and of course I'll have to add on a intel wifi + Vista...
that should bring my GT up to around ~$1,600...
when I compare it to something comparable like the ASUS G1S-A1 that is ~$1,800
Pretty much the same thing but... a worse processor and this crazy thing called battery-life more than 1 hour...
Hopefully, I made the right choice... thoughts? -
Gentech has the Corsair Value select for $78 for 2x1GB. And every canadian website has them for $40/GB, newegg does not have the MIR in this case.

Well, I've been pretty happy so far with my new C90, despite it having some minor quirks (most of which have been reported already):
1) If removed from AC power, then plugged back in moments later, the laptop restarts. (Started happening recently)
2) If powered up from Battery, the system has a BSOD. (Sometimes...not always. Generally has this problem when I remove my external keyboard, mouse, soundcard, and monitor, then turn the computer on.) Strangely enough, plugging the AC power back in causes the computer to start normally.
Other than that, most everything has been smooth sailing. I wish the graphics card would perform a bit better in more intensive applications (WoW runs like a dream with everything cranked, but Tabula Rausa has to be set to "Low" to get any sort of playable performance), so here's to hoping for a better MXM card sometime soon. -
like 40 dollars for the audigy soundcard on another thread might be a good idea.
-
Sigh ... Me too first two bsod ... firts when - plug in an x360 controller then again when it restarted ( i was on abttery ) i have not ried the plug in plug out i ll do it later)
-
-
Heh, I know...I was just kinda shocked that the auto-detect wanted me to have the settings at "High". The game is good so far, but goddamn, the requirements are insane.
Either way, the BSOD crap is starting to get to me. I can't remotely use battery power at this point, as it gets to the windows login then BSODs right after I enter my password. Also, any sort of fluctuation from the power adapter shuts the system down. (Sucks because the power was all over the place following a storm we had up here in the Twin Cities.)
Also, a warning to those that use a X-Fi notebook card: if you want to remove the card at any point, you need to shut the computer down first. Any attempt I've made to unplug it results in the computer locking up. I don't know if this is happening to anyone else, but it's certainly been happening to me. -
Hello DarkAngel_ZERO. I just ordered my C90S from Eddie at BtoTech and haven't received it yet but I have a lot of power fluctuations in my area also. I took care of the problems(for my desktop system, but will use the same when my C90S arrives), by connecting a Tripp-Lite line conditioner. I can hear the power circuitry engage to raise or lower voltage frequently. Although they are not cheap, they work great, and do not have a battery as do battery backup units which need the battery replaced every 2 years or so.

Just checked the Asus website for BIOS updates (none found), but there was a whole slew of what appear to be new drivers, especially audio and a newer Turbogear version. Anyone tried these?
-
The requierement are about any games that are coming up now. It needs a FX 5700 /Radeon 9600PRO and many games now requiere a 6600 256MB -
My main power fluctuations happen at work, where I have only a surge protector as my means of protecting my computer. Over the last 24 hours or so, our power has been going in and out, which has been wreaking havoc on my machine to the point of where I'm just leaving it off for the time being.
Any idea if this might be BIOS related? -
Just posting I own a C90s.

I just purchased a C90S and am waiting for it. I want to purchase some DVD blank discs, but I can't find any info other than the basic "5.25 12.7 mm 8X / 24x24x10x(max.), support DVD Combo, DVD Super-Multi". Does anyone know what the "Super Multi" means, and does the drive have light scribe? Also has anyone found any media type or brand that works better or worse with this drive. I assume all the barebones come with the same drive, but just in case I purchased mine from Bto Tech. Thanks in advance.
-
Looking through the new driver downloads on the ASUS site and I find it a little strange that there are drivers for ATI graphics 8/8/07, but only generic(I assume those are the ones for Nvidia based GPU's)drivers dated 5-24-07.
All of the barebone C90S's come with Nvidia cards, one barebone is sold without GPU and you buy the 8600 GT separate, but yet ASUS releases ATI drivers and no current Nvidia drivers - wt_? What are they smokin on their breaks? -
Ordered mine today
-
The nvidia's 165.01 drivers have support for the 9800GTX if you check on the file with the name of all supported chips. (labelled as G9x) -
You're probably right-maybe only ATI could come up with an mxm2 solution that would beat the 8600gt with a heat load of 25 watts.
-
Oh, and if that's the case, they spent their time putting out a driver for a product that's not here yet and not putting out a driver for the gpu that is here probably means the weak performance of the 8600gt is not going to get better. I guess they want us to "fork over more dough"!
-
i think ati is actually testing their products, apparently a hd 2600 competes with a 8700gt from what i read in another thread, cannot find the link
-
The HP 20'' media center has a HD 2600XT but it's not a 128bit GDDR3 1600 if I remember well, it's on a 64bit bus or something like this.
It's scores halfway between the GT GDDR3 and the 8700 in 3Dmark06.
@Hansfragger, Asus does not make the drivers, ATI/Nvidia does, the 24/07 drivers are the lastest nvidia ones, that's all.
The GF8M uses the same driver pack as the desktop one -
Hello JCMS. That's what I thought also. I kept digging and found this on Nvidias faq -
"Question
Where are the notebook or laptop drivers?
Answer
NVIDIA provides driver updates to our Notebook and Laptop computer partners. The driver updates are then packaged and distributed by the partners, often with custom power management and other features and settings specific to that platform. NVIDIA does not control the schedule the various notebook and laptop providers use to release new drivers for their products.
NVIDIA is NOT allowed to directly distribute drivers for the vast majority of Notebook and Laptop computers.
The only way to get updates for NVIDIA laptop or notebook graphics cards is though the notebook provider.
also Nvidia says the desktop drivers won't work in most laptops - quote
" Question
Where can I download mobile drivers for GeForce Go or Quadro Go mobile GPUs?
Answer
Mobile GPU's like the GeForce Go and Quadro Go family of mobile GPU's use drivers that have been customized to support hot key functions, power management functions, lid close and suspend/resume behavior that are normally found in notebooks. The reference desktop graphic drivers that are provided by NVIDIA on our driver downloads page do not include these custom features. For this reason, the NVIDIA Forceware NVIDIA graphics display drivers will not install on most Geforce and Quadro family of mobile GPU's."
So this means ASUS is dogging us on the 8600GT drivers(for vista and dx10-which is part of the reason to choose the card and laptop we did. -
On the reviews/benchmarks, people have been using the 101.xx, 158.xx and 163.11 provided on laptopvideo2go and they are the same package as those directly on nvidia's page though, no?
-
Sigh .. Im really frsutrated by now im getting bsod left and right cnat work cant play can anything im not very knowledagbrle but i think we really need a troubleshooting guide with solutions that have popping out form user to user so that the buyers and new owners may try them before deciding that getting it was a bad move...
I have no idea if i have tried every sollution posted in the forums -

-
Yeah but this says Geforce Go, nothing about Geforce M -
Q [ Why is it necessary to modify the drivers to get them to work on any mobile GPU (ie, why can't I just download the driver straight from Nvidia's site)? ]
A [ Official NV site drivers (to be specific: only the INF) does not support any mobile GPUs, except some rare ones. All the dirty work has to be done by OEMs. But as you can see in the drivers section there is also a bunch of leaked drivers with mobile INFs in it. ] -
just ran 3dmarko6 and scored 2931

Well I have my c90s now, but I bumped into a problem with Vista.
During installation of VISTA, I keep freezing at the black loading screen (with the moving bar). I read that VISTA will not install when there is a piece of hardware that it does not like. Anybody else have/had trouble with this? -
so, is there any good video driver for windows xp for the c90s??? I got 3426 on the 3dmark06 (no overclocking) but I still could get a little more. I tried to do it overclocking the cpu but it freezes. Even I can not play with overclocking with games like DarkStar, X3, or Oblivion because my c90s restart every single time. On stardard mode, c90s runs fine everything I throw at it
