well higher numbers mean better performance, it just numbers we use to compare systems. if you have 2 identical system and one has a much lower score than you can determine that there is something wrong with that system. we just use them for a reference point to determine our system performance.

and rep is not really need, because me and you are bros, glad to help you out anyday.lol and my 5870 coming early next week.

Baw lol, setting up a backup so I'll be ready when my SSD will arrive... Just saw that I have 40gb of games already >.> A quarter of my SSD is already filled :p throw Win 7, drivers and essential programs, I will get up to 100Gb really fast. Then another 10 to 20Gb of media that I'll carry around with me.. there is not much space left!

Yo when you have an SSD, you gotta limit yourself to the basics. Hope you have an external HDD cuz thats where you'll have your progams/games/music/movies that you not using. Keep the OS(obviously) a couple of games..i'd say 2-3 max, all your basic programs (MS Office and all that) and you should be good :). 40gigs of games is a lil excessive lol...How many games you play at once? Anyways i think i'll be ordering a 256gb SSD sooner than i thought. the 5870m on the other hand.. mehh ...as much as i want it... i don't game all that much anyways, and the 260 hasn't let me down. So untill it does ( and newer games demand more) i'll just have to stick with my 260 :D. Maybe i'll even flash it to 1v to keep up with you Heavies using the 5870m :D :D . I know, i know... a OC'd 260 doesn't come near a 5870m :( :( :( lol

I'm anxious to see what kind of temps you guys will get and real-time FPS in games though :D Im excited for you guys man (Sleey0 and Inap) to get your 5870m's :D

Lol, 40 gb is about five games... Games are huge nowadays..
I sure have a 1 terabyte external HDD to hold on my roughly 200 gbs of medias on all kinds! Im still unsure if Im gonna keep it has another external HDD or if im gonna sell it...

I know nothing about scores :( But there is something here that i don't understand.

    CPU scores

    The fastest 980x>>> 53017

    your previous 720qm> 28671

    your present 620> > >>8726

I was hoping the 620 to be faster than the720, But even do how come there is such huge difference 28671- 8726 = 19945

You know, you can modify your 500Gb HDD, well actually just build a case for it (or buy one, they exist) and use it as an external HDD but with an ESATA connection, which is MUCH MUCH faster than usb 2.0 . This would also make it possible to have games installed on your 500gb HDD, and have them run right off of it no problem! So your external would really be like an "internal", just outside of yoru M15x. lol.. If i get an SSD, thats most prob what im doing.

EDIT: Unless your External HDD has an ESATA connection Already (they're like double the price). Converting an internal HDD to work outside is much cheaper.

EDIT#2: Check it out---> this thing is dirt cheap, and nice and compact. Watch the little video at the bottom. Awesome Product, comes with everything you'd ever need. HIGHLY recommend anyone upgrading their standard HDD to SSD to get this, as it will put your old HDD to VERY good use :) ENjoy

It was inflated on the 720 score due to physx.

They are almost identical in benchmarks with the 620 edging out the 720 in certain areas.

Yea what he said ^^^. Nvidia GPu's have PhysX which takes the strain of Physic calculations OFF your CPU by the GPU actually helping it out as well. One score you have physX Enabled, (28671), and the other (8726) it is disabled. Disabling actually give you a better idea of your CPU performance.

Also, 620 Wins in DualCore optimized Apps (most everyday apps), and 720 wins in quad-core optimized apps (very, very few). For cpu intensive games your 620 will out-perform a 720.

Can't wait till Apps will finally get optimized for quad-core cpus, since i7's and Quads are are becoming more and more popular. Its a real bummer that the majority isn't :(

Ok ive recently purchased this laptop,
please forgive me for posting in someone else's thread but i need help and no ones replying to mine..

    Alienware M15x - Cosmic Black, Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium,64bit

    Intel® Core™ i3-330M 2.13GHz (3M cache)

    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz

    15.6-inch WideHD+ 1600x900 (900p) WLE

    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 240M

and im sitting here thinking, (more like waiting for it to show up in the mail) and i cant help but wonder if the extra 2 gb 800MHz chip i have from my last laptop could be installed on my new one once it arrives. Also i have a Toshiba satellite L305D with a broken screen, so im thinking i might be able to part it out, the hhd im saving for a backup so when my 500 or my 320 ever crash on me ill be safe..

could u guys check and see if any of the parts from this POS laptop could be encorporated in my newest addition to my computing force, i mean.. its a dual core processor nd its kinda nice nd what not..

    thanks ahead of time.

keep in mind, the 4 gb's im already pushing is 1066MHz

possibility that trying to use (if it would even fit) 800MHz Ram would make all 6 gb's run at 800 MHz?
if so i think i should part out this laptop and start my 2 x 4gb ddr3 @1066 ram stick fund.

it's cool man this is the owners lounge. also the M15x only has 2 ram slots and since you have 4gb it will be 2 (2gb) sticks of ram so no room for 3rd stick. and also 800mhz is way slower then your 1066 and nothing will be gain only lost if you use it and probably won't fit. i would say there is pretty much nothing you can use from your old laptop, only the hdd you can use.

    awsome, thanks for the input.

is there such thing as 4gb 1066MHz ram sticks?
so in the future i could upgrade my two slots to 4 gb's instead of 2 x 2's?
if there is i know it aint cheap :\

Hi, congrats on your new baby.

Unfortunately, Is the ram you have ddr3 or ddr2? if it was ddr2 there is no dice its going to work. Moreover, you will get 2 sticks of 2GB so there is no room for expansion, unless you replace one of the 2GB sticks for a 4Gb stick. Finally, if your old ram would have worked, you would actually be slowing down your computer than upgrading. It is not really certain that you need more than 4 GB of ram, but going from 1066 -> 800 will

yeah, the current is ddr3, so ddr2/3 arnt compatible?
i read alot about it and nothing convinced me either way thus far.
also is it yall's oppinion that i should part out this laptop?
sell mother board nd chipset nd battery nd hhd nd all that seperatly?
or should i keep it all together and just try to sell it as a satalite L305D dual core w/broken screen?
i can give u specs for it and like hours used to determine approx. value

    Woohoo congratz!! :D :D Isn't it just awesome ?

Diffrent drivers work better for certain games. However, I installed the newest 197.16 drivers off the Nvidia website and they work great across the board. Here's the link :)

be careful though, as alot of the cheap ones have crappy build quality, and internal connections aren't as snug as they should be. Also alot of them tend to overheat, don't have esata and just USB, so are pretty pointless. I know this because my father bought one for 20$, and was complete garbage.

The one i linked is a lil more expensive, but has 5* reviews from almost everyone. 40$ isn't that bad, remember these drives weren't made to run outside your pc.

imo a cooler is not needed for the M15x, its a cooling beast. even when oc'ed the temps were way beyond acceptable. but that is a great cooler, alot of the M17x user bought those.

my gpu idles around 45-50 c and when gaming it around 60-65 c.

I've received a big assignment, so I won't be able to take my laptop anywhere for a couple of days. I bought 3DMark Vantage and am going to try the download at home (estimated download time = 68 hours).

I have a question though. Once I have downloaded this, do I need a working internet connection to run the test?

Don't worry, Inappropriate, it's just 8 bucks or something, Luckily I live somewhere near you and money grows on trees here! ;)

No, seriously, the website of Futuremark stated that a decent internet connection was needed in order to run the free benchmark. Now that would definitely steer all potential 240 buyers away with my internet connection!

So, every time I use my Mamba's sensitivity change buttons, I get a BINARY GFX message (same as in the R1 with switchable graphics).

It tells me to reboot to switch to integrated and I am like, holy crap! I am thinking the GPU on my 620 is going to kick in. lol

It doesn't, of course, but I think it is really strange that I am getting that message on a system that doesn't support it.

And this is the first core i7 laptop that doesn't have any kind of cpu throttling.

For fun, I ran Intel Burn Test and used realtemp / i7 turbo to monitor.

Started on battery and CPU was at 24x and 3GHz.

Plugged in the cord and the numbers didn't budge :)

Yeah, bit of a pain. A few of us have had problem with the Mamba sensitivity buttons. Never did find a decent solution sorry. My solution was the Logitech Performance ;)
